Problems since Quicktime 7.6 updater install

Have been unable to open and use my Sims2 games since the most recent Quicktime 7.6 installation via the software update last week. According to Aspyr, the distributor of Sims2 for Mac, this problem was reported last week.
Any news here as to when we can expect a fix/patch/updated download that will correct the problem? It seems to have something to do with being created on a Rosetta program (whatever that is!
Any info that anyone might have would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, I have the fix!! After several frustrating days it finally just works.
The process:
Upgrade your Macs to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Powercycle your modem AND time capsule / airport TWICE
Reset your time capsule with a pin or paperclip on the back
Follow the prompts to setup your time capsule / airport access
-- On your Macs
Go to System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced > TCP/IP
Click "Renew DHCP Lease" then click "Ok"
Click Apply
Turn off Airport
Turn Airport on
IT WORKS!!!
One of the magical people at tech support walked me through it earlier today. The whole process took about 1.5 hrs because Show Leopard takes about an hour to install on one machine.

MacSpeech Dictate Crashes on startup every time since Quicktime 7.6 update

I had my MacBook Pro 17" working perfectly. I allowed it to install QuickTime update and since then MacSpeech Dictate is failing to start up. This is the error I am getting.

Please copy the information in the crash log that will appear when you click "OK" into an email message, along with the the files named:
"2009-01-22 22-26-24 Interface.txt" and
"2009-01-22 22-26-24 Log.txt"
from the "Troubleshooting" folder that has just been opened in the Finder.

The reason for the reply is there isn't any guarantee the problem is with QuickTime 7.6. For example, I've had no problems with it on my machine (but I don't have Dictate installed, so I haven't tested it.) Not all problems arising from a new update are caused by the update. Could be with Dictate or some other dysfunction on your system or other incompatibility. Hence, it's always best to report third-party software problems to the developer first, then find out if the problem is not their software before reporting here. Otherwise we may end up chasing our tails (and tales) only to find the problem isn't with OS X or an update to OS X.

Battery problems since 10.4.3 update?

I know that there a quite a few threads about battery problems, but has anybody experienced significant decreases in battery life after installing the 10.4.3 update? I installed it a few days ago and I'm noticing now that my battery life is much worse than it used to be.
For example, I was just watching a movie on my iBook. Before I started, my battery was FULLY charged, and Energy Saver was set for "Better Battery Life". I had airport turned off and left the screen brightness at default.
My battery died within 40 MINUTES! I had the sound turned up a little bit but I don't think that would drain enough power to reduce my batter life to 40 minutes when set for "better battery life"....
My battery's less than 2 years old.
Anyone else had similar problems since last OS update?

The battery according to this app shows that at max charge it only has 18% of its orginial capacity.

Problems since 10.4.4 update...

I've got a problem since i've updated Tiger to 10.4.4. Usually I leave the computer with the screen sleeping. When I try to awake it, the computer only shows the screen into a black shadow.
The first time I've seen that I restarted the computer and all has runned OK, but the last time (this monrning) it didn't respond to the restarts and I did have to reset the PRAM.
Is anybody having the same problems?
iMac G4 700 Mac OS X (10.4.4) Airport, DBT-120, Wireless Mouse, 1 gb RAM, 160 gbs HDD, Superdrive.

I've repaired permissions and the hard disk with the Tiger install DVD. If this happens again I will try reinstalling Tiger. The trouble seems to be done from software, not a hardware failure.

Main problem after 10.5.8 update install

The problem I have is after updating with 10.5.8 combo I now have to unplug my Mac and wait about 10 minuets before I can reinsert the mains plug then restart as normal. If I use restart under the apple or any other way that uses restart the Mac will not restart. Any ideas?

Try Resetting the PRAM
Is that doesn't make a difference, try Resetting the SMC
I see you had problems before this on a previous post?

Resetting either the PRAM or SMC might help this.

Startup problem since 5/07 security update

I've been having serious problems with startup since the last security update. Startup hangs at the first gray screen or the while screen with the Apple logo. Sometimes multiple restarts get me to the login screen. Safe mode gets me there as well, but the next time I log in the same problem occurs. I have cleaned caches, deleted extensions, deleted fonts, used several shareware programs to clean up my startup files.
Yesterday, when I booted up, a small camera appeared mid-screen with a face alternating with a question mark. The camera blinks back and forth for a long time. Once startup made it to the login screen, but I didn't want to login, since I didn't know what it was. Today I tried to login again. The camera is still there--no surprise--but this time startup is stalled at the gray screen and the fans starts up and runs with no progress.
Any ideas? My iMac has worked perfectly until I did the last security update. I am pretty careful about downloads or opening any unknown files, so I'd be surprised if I have a virus. Others in my family use the iMac, but they're pretty saavy about viruses.
I'm about to reinstall OSX, but want to see if anyone has run into this and found a way around.

Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior

Quicktime won't update, install, or delete??????

Hi,
My PC is running XP and refuses to update Quicktime. When I try to install Quicktime 7, it gets almost all the way done, and then says, "The wizard was interrupted before Quicktime could be completely installed". I have deleted the registry keys for Quicktime, but when I restart, the Quicktime icon pops up in the system tray. How can this be?
So, what do I do? It appears that I cannot run it, or delete it, or update it????????

so i tried to download the windows installer update from the link you gave me but now i'm getting a different error and it won't let me download the installer. The error reads:

Big Problems since 10.6.5 update!

Updated the other night on my imac 24" since then it has been freezing. I restarted my mac and I can move my mouse but not one application I click on
opens..I mean nothing. I have tried rebooting with the start up disc still the same problem. I hope someone can help me I searched and searched this website and didn't see anything close to my problem.

Open Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities), highlight your internal drive, and click on "repair permissions". You should do this after every software update. You may see some cryptic messages; as long as it says "permissions repair complete" at the end, no need to worry about them (everyone has been getting some after a Java update).
Also, if it should ever become necessary, you can also verify your disk. If that results in a "needs repair" message, you can't do that while booted up from the internal. You can do it while booted up from your install disk.

A bit of a problem since the 4.0 update...

I updated my iPhone with the new 4.0 version of the software yesterday and since then, I can't play any music in my car. I have a USB port on my car radio and I've always used it to play music from my phone in my car, but since I got the new software version, when I plug it, it's like if I was always taking the cable in and out and makes the sound of an iPhone charging every 4 or 5 seconds.
I know for sure that my radio is not the problem, because I tried it with my mother's iPod Touch and my own cable, and it worked fine. I also tried my iPhone in my mother's car, and it doesn't work either. So I know for sure the phone has a problem and I'm pretty sure it's related to the new software update.
I tried restoring the iPhone completely but as soon as I plug it on the computer, I don't even have to touch anything and it already comes with the 4.0 installed on it. Like automatically. Is there any way to come back to the 3.1.3, which I had before?
I'm really disappointed by Apple now. I thought updates were made for upgrading something, not making **** of it.

Problems since 10.4.11 update

Hi,
I have installed the latest software update..OSX10.4.11
Since then big problems:
Everytime I try to remove / eject a usb key /memory card, (I'm a photographer so need to do this daily) etc the finder chrashes.
I can not install any new applications as suddenly I do not have access privileges..although I am only user and have not changed any of these details.
Some other applications tending to stall also..photomechanic etc.
I have reinstalled update but still the same.
When I installed th update I did not archive /install.
Anyone else having problems with this software update?
Any solutions?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

Safari problems since 10.6.7 update

Since the latest update (at least, that's what I think is to blame), I keep coming across the following problems:
1. "Safari can't find the server" error message - even discussions.apple.com
2. Web pages not displaying properly, i.e. elements all over the place or displaying as mostly text only
Both of these problems are random but quite frequent. I've tried using another user account, uninstalling the one extension I had, resetting Safari, reinstalling Safari, clearing caches, deleting all cookies, deleting preference files... What else is there?

Problems with an app in more then one account can mean there's a problem with the startup disk.
From your admin account, launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the FirstAid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions). If the disk needs repairing, follow these instructions.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.

Problems since downloading panther sec updates

since downloading a panther security update, my email account won't open, safari only works with the mouse (as soon as I touch the keyboard, it quits) and many of my soft ware applications give the error message: the pllication could not be opened because of a shared library error: <CarbonLib><CFMPriv_CarbonCore>. I am not sur that my troubles coincide with the panther update download. I would post the crash reports, but I can't log onto the discussion groups with the computer with troubles because safari crashes whenever I touch the keyboard.

boot from the Panther install CD 1 by holding down the c-key during boot. Once the installer has started select "Disk Utility" from the MENU and repair the disk and permissions. Restart. Now re-apply the Mac OS X Update 10.3.9 (Combo) and check if the problem persists.

Audio drifts out of sync since Quicktime 7.6 update!

Help!
Seems like ever since i updated the Quicktime to 7.6 my uncompressed 8 or 10 bit sequences for playout to digital betacam drifts out of sync over time!
But when i just go to the end of the sequence and hit play, everything seems fine.
I just restarted to my old Tiger system and there the problem doesn't seem to be there.
Any ideas??
I use the blackmagic Multibridge Extreme.
Another strange thing is that when i playout to HD, there is also no problem!

I have had my audio drift out of sync also, not with Betacam, but DV. I basically send the audio from FCP to STP and tweek the audio, and then on export back to FCP it adds about 10 frames worth of audio. It starts in sync and then drifts by the end of the sequence. I have had no problems with shorter sequences - ie. 30 sec. The one I am working on now is just over 6 minutes. What is weird is that the sequence length in both FCP and STP are the exact same, but when I export back it drifts and adds in the extra frames.
I tried fiddling with all the framerate settings in STP and it still does it.
I posted last night in FCP and STP forums and haven't had any luck.

Screen problems since last s/w update -- suggestions please

Folks:
I think the most software update I got and installed was iTunes and QuickTime. I think --I'm not 100% sure-- that after the obligatory restart after that update was when I started seeing problems: Font "distortion" in some applications, not consistent, but now characters run together sometimes and characters look, well, lo-rez -- not consistently at all, though.
Here's a somewhat more clear symptom. Adobe Illustrator (CS3, the latest) displays a rectangle around the central drawing area, a 1 pt black line. Operating in AI the rectangle looks fine until I move the cursor toward it. In some cases --right now on the right side only-- as the cursor approaches the line the a segment of the rectangle displaces away from the cursor about one or two pixels. It doesn't matter which drawing tool I have selected.
Here's another symptom: As I type this (in fully updated FireFox) the first non-blank line above is distorted, as if there is a kind of smudge over the lower half of all the characters. This horizontal smudge seems to follow my progress as I type, two lines above the current cursor. As I continue to type, the distortion moves down, and affects only one line. Characters outside this "smudge zone" are fine.
Another symptom: As I move the cursor around over this text, above and blow, some characters appear bolded. Right now, the "t" in symptom in the line above looks more or less bolded. If I move the cursor to the top of this window, the "t" changes to normal ... and then back again when I continued typing here.
As you can see I'm having difficulty even describing what's going on. It isn't at all consistent, it appears to be system-linked and not application-specific, and it isn't serious -- just quite annoying. Shouldn't be happening!
Oh, no, I checked: It isn't a problem with my glasses <grin>.
Suggestions about how to describe this and where to look for solutions?

Here is some more evidence:
1. I thought about the issue, and the distortion seems to follow the cursor in all cases, though sometimes the effect remains after the cursor has been moved away. So, maybe it's related to (drum roll) the cursor? What can I change about the cursor? Its size, in the Universal Access preference. Unfortunately, adjusting the cursor size to maximum and back to minimum has no effect. Oh, well, it was a good idea.
2. Why don't I post a screen-shot of the distortion somewhere? So I put Grab on timer and fooled with the cursor in this very window until the text above "...Universal Access..." appeared with its lower pixels missing, waited until the timer expired. But.... The screen shot DOES NOT SHOW THE PROBLEM. In three completely different trials, the text in the screen shot was flawless. Hmmm, that should be a very good clue for someone who understands how the screen is maintained in MacOS.
3. Right now I have two windows side-by-side mostly filling my screen. On the left, a large photo in Preview. On the right, the Main window of Entourage 2004. I bring Preview to the front and I move the cursor to the approximate horizontal center of Preview's toolbar, which is very near the top of the screen, and I move the cursor vertically towards the bottom of the screen. About half-way, I observe, well, a ripple running across the photo, no --wait-- across the entire screen. Where the ripple meets text (in the Entourage window at the right), it distorts more or less as I've already described. I think it is important that the problem occurs in all windows, not the frontmost. Oh, yes, I've moved this window down near the bottom of the screen and, so far, I've seen no problems. So the problem appears to only occur at mid-screen, vertically. That's where one usually works...
Ideas, anyone?
