Problems starting up from panther discs

Hello! My Mother recently purchased a printer that only works with Mac OS X, but her iMac was only OS 9.2. I thought it'd be easy to upgrade, and purchased a retail version of OS X Panther discs from macresue.com. Well, everytime I try to start up from the first disc it flashes a white screen and then the "?"/mac face. It does that a few seconds and then does a normal start up. It's a iMac G3, Power PC, 400 mhz, 128 RAM (bought from an apple store a year after we purchased the computer.) It has a DVD Rom drive, but not a CD burner or anything like that. I'm pretty sure it should be able to start up the disc. I have the required firmwire update (4.1.9), and the only thing I can think of think of that might cause a problem is the keyboard. It's not an Apple product (kensingston) but the Apple keyboard we have is broken (water spilled on it!) I'm not about to go running to buy a new keyboard, because I'm not sure if that'll even help. I hope someone here can help me figure out what this computer's problem is with the OS X Panther discs?
Thanks,
Belle
iMac G3   Mac OS 9.2.x

Hi Belle, and welcome to the discussions.
First off, 128 MB is the minimum required for Panther; it will run, but it'll be slow. I just finished installing on a 350MHz iMac with 128MB of RAM (I'll be adding more RAM before putting the iMac to use). What you're doing will work - we just have to figure out what's wrong.
1. You say you have the required firmware update. Does that mean it's been installed?
2. From everything I've heard, macrescue.com is pretty reliable, but I just want to verify that you did indeed receive the retail disks. There should be four in the set, three black install disks, each with a large silver X in the middle, and one white XCode Tools disk with a picture of a hammer and blueprint in the middle.
3. Is your RAM a single 128MB module, or two 64MB modules? If you still have the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the computer, boot from the CD and run a thorough test.
4. Even if your RAM passes the Hardware test, it's possible that something is wrong with it. Panther requires stricter adherence to RAM specifications than earlier operating systems, so the iMac might run perfectly under OS 9, but won't run at all under OSX. If the RAM was purchased from Apple, it should have a lifetime warranty. Take it back to the store and have them test the RAM, or better yet, see if they'll give you a discount on 256MB in exchange.
5. Assuming the firmware has been installed, and the disks are the retail version, check the first install disk for any scratches, fingerprints, or imperfections. Polish the CD with a soft cloth to get it as clean as possible, then try again.
Good luck, and post back with any questions/results.

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple

      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • G3 wont start up from Panther CD!

My parents iMac is a G3 with 9.2.2. and the latest Firmware update. (I just updated that.) No matter what I do, the iMac will not start up from the Panther installation disc. I put it in while computer is running, says I need to restart to use begin installation process. I check Start Up to make sure the disc is sellected as the start up hard drive. It will blink a question mark and a folder for a minute, then start up 9.2 again. Do I need more memory? Am I missing another update? What is the problem do you think? I would appreciate any advice or info. Thanks.

I've never tried to install Panther on anything with less than 128MB of RAM, so I can't say for sure that the reason it won't install is the lack of RAM.
The only physical reason why the Panther CDs wouldn't install the OS (if you had enough RAM) would be if they are damaged in some way.
You can purchase RAM from any computer retailer. You need PC133 SDRAM (PC100 SDRAM would work, but would probably be more expensive). Panther is finicky about the quality of the RAM it requires, so I'd recommend Kingston. I don't know how much 1GB would be, but 256MB should be around US$50.
Installing RAM on an iMac is simple: unplug the ethernet and usb cables (you can leave the power cord plugged in to keep it grounded), turn it upside down, and open the door on the bottom. The RAM slots are right under the door; touch the steel mesh with one hand, and reach in with the other to release the clips holding the old RAM in. Remove the old RAM, and insert the new RAM. SDRAM has two notches where the contacts are, so there's only one way for it to go in. It will require a bit of force to make it sit snuggly in the slot, but the clips will spring up when it is in place.
The manual also has instructions, with pictures. Download it from:
    http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/imac/
Select iMac G3 User's Manual (2000) near the bottom of the page.
    Good luck!

  • Won't start up from 'Install Disc'

I ran Disk Utilities because my iMac's fan kept running. Disk Utilities said I had HD problems and needed to start up from the Install Disc. I have tried holding down 'D' and tried changing the start up disk settings, even starting up pressing C and as a final go... Command-Option-P-R..... still not starting up on the install dvd. All I get is a white screen and the DVD clicks for a bit and then gives up.
I just can't seem to get past that white screen!
    Please give me a hint!
P.S. I have even tried different install DVD's!

I am having very similar problems.
iMac has worked fine for 3 years. Today, it suddenly froze while I was on the web. I had to force it down by holding down the button on the back. When I tried to start, it would just sit on the Apple icon + progress icon. Or it would get to the blue screen and then just freeze at the blue screen. No system at all.
I was able to restart in safe mode once. Things seemed to be working fine. But the second I started Safari, the progress icon came up (the one for my mouse), would never go away, and I couldn't do anything. Had to once again shut down by holding down the button on the back.
After that, it will not restart in safe mode (hangs at the apple icon or never even gets to the apple icon). It will not restart from the Install disc. Same thing, just hangs at the apple icon.
We don't use this machine for anything except browsing the web. No big programs. No games. No movies. Nada. It's so frustrating to have this problem.

  • Can't start up from install disc

When Onyx checked my start up volume it said there was a problem and I should start from my installation disc and run disc utility. I tried restarting and holding down C and it would not start from the disc. In researching support I tried resetting PRAM with no luck. I saw that with a wireless keyboard I should wait till I hear the chime before pressing C, no luck. I next tried restarting pressing option instead. It only gave me the choice of Macintosh HD not install disc.
I assume I am using the correct disc (imac Applications install DVD) as it is the only one I can find. Am I doing something wrong or is there any other suggestions?
    Thanks for any help.

    Greetings,
#1 If your getting that kind of message from Onyx make sure you have your data backed up before you do any kind of repairs. If you have an issue with the formatting of the drive (which is one of the triggers in Onyx that gives you that message) then you need to backup your data ASAP. Repairs can actually make things worse with certain kinds of drive issues. So backup now.
Are you using the install disk that came with your computer?
I assume when you put the disk in the drive, it shows up on the desktop and gives you all the contents of the disk?
If so this sounds like a keyboard issue. I would try a USB keyboard or put some REALLY fresh batteries in the your current one. Like just bought from a store that doesn't keep batteries sitting in the back for 3 months kinda fresh.
    Alternatives:
    _Put the disk in.
_Go to Apple > System Preferences > Start Up Disk
_Choose the disk here and then say restart
Once you've completed the repairs using Disk Utility from the install disk, quit the installer and you will get the option for Start Up disk. You can then choose the internal hard drive so the system boots normally (Or use the option key to use startup manager at boot to choose the internal HD).
    Hope that helps!

  • Extracting DVD Player 4 installer from Panther discs

Bugger me, I can't seem to remember the name of the programme that is used to extract the specific installation programmes from the Panther discs. I'm trying to get DVD Player 4 off of the installer (Interactual Player freezes too much.)
Apple's Support site does not list a download of DVD Player that is compatible with Panther, but oddly enough lists a player compatible with Jaguar and Tiger.

Justin:I wonder why I can't download it from the site...I have no idea why not. However, you can pick it off the install CD, thanks to Pacifist.
    Good luck.

  • Problems burning DVD from iDVD disc image

I'm burning a disc image onto a DVD using Toast and can't seem to get the disc to automatically start or be read by either my home DVD player or my Powerbook G4 (through DVD player). I'm a little unclear if I burn the .img folder onto the DVD, the mounted drive containing the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS files, or the AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS files themselves. I've tried all of these and none have worked, which made me think that it was something wrong with my DVDproj file from whence the disc image was made.
Do I have to have something in the box labeled "Drag content here to automatically play when disc is inserted" in teh MapView? I'd prefer it to just bring up the DVD menu.
    Thanks!

    Pre edit:
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • My 27" aluminum imac no longer recognizes its own hard drive.  i start up from the disc, but get no destination to install.  whatever am i to do???

it shows up in disc utility as "media" unable for verify or repair.  as a target disc all that appears is the install disc.  anyone else have this problem??

Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Is your hard drive at least listed in the DU sidebar? If so, select the topmost entry (drive mfgr.'s name) and not what is displayed for the SMART status in the DU status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive itself has died.
I would also suggest you shut down the computer for a full minute then restart doing the above in order to see if the drive "comes to life."

  • Problems starting server from within CFBuilder

I recently installed CFBuilder and setup a localhost server.  I did not check the box to Use Windows Service to start/stop in the server setting.   I currently have the CF Server set to manually startup in the Windows Services.  When I finished the setup, I see the server starting up in the CFBuilder console.  Everything seems to work fine until I restart my machine.  Once I restart my machine and run CFBuilder, I cannot start the server from the Servers panel.  A messages in the console comes back stating that the server is unresponsive.  I thought it was my java version, so I updated the java to the latest 6_19.  Still the problem exists.  I uninstalled CFBuilder and reinstalled it, and it works fine (CF Server starts up in the console) until again I restart my machine.
I do have Windows Vista 32-bit.  I downgraded back to Java version 6_06.  I thought the problem was just my machine, but I have another Vista machine that is having the exact problem, and it has the same JAVA and Vista.
I looked through the Coldfusion Logs to see if I can find any errors.  I have tried to find logs in CFBuilder, but I have not been able to locate any.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Sam,
Unfortunately, this feature does not exist in Workshop 9.2
Regarding your question about redirecting the output, the logs are saved under the domain directory.
You could also refer to the following section for additional info on redirecting the output to multiple destinations.

    Hope this helps.

  • Start up from install disc

    Hello there,
I need to start my Macbook from the install disc in order to do a minor repair using disc utilities.
Can anyone tell me how to do this?
    Many thanks.
    PG Logo

OK, I've tried doing the above about a dozen times but on each and every occassion I get the option to reinstall my software.
There is an option to choose the installation disc when I choose Quit Installer but it keeps bouncing me back to installing the software from scratch.
I don't want to do this.  I just want to run a repair disc from the utilities menu.
Any ideas to how I can accomplish this?
    Many thanks

  • Can't reinstall from panther disc

    Hi
Safari was trashed on our computer by accident. I was going to reinstall it from our panther install discs but the installer says that the system on the computer is too new. The install disc is version 10.3 the computer is version 10.3.9. I am assuming it is newer because of the automatic updates. Does anyone know how I get the installer to allow me to reinstall safari?
    Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    You're Welcome Mike!
Are these the updates that you downloaded?
    Safari Update 1.3.2,
Safari Update 1.3.1, which, if you currently have version 1.3, must be installed first.
But I'm surprised that Software Update is not reporting them.

  • Three beeps when starting up from a disc

three beeps when starting from a disc

If your MBP came with lion or mountain lion.  You will need to reboot the computer with a bootable Lion DVD. Unlike previous versions of Mac OS X, Lion (OS X 10.7) doesn’t ship with a bootable disc—it’s available only as an installer app downloadable from the Mac App Store.  Once you have attained one of these disks. Boot and enter utilities and reformat the hard disk. Ensure that "Guid" is selected under options and that you also select "Mac OS Extended - Journaled. Hopefully before you do any of this you have a very recent time machine backup.
Once reformatted the computer should startup from the Lion Boot DVD without the beeps and you can reinstall the OS and restore your backup.
    Good luck

  • Problems starting tcode from swo1-object via gos (so_sendobj)

    Hi,
working with gos around some swo1-object, i got the problem to start a transaction which is called from an object method: the transaction starts but the wished details of that item do not appear as expected.
When I start the test environment within tcode SWO1, and at first, I create an instance from this object giving it the right key (for the wished item) then i succeed in starting the bespoken transaction from within that method showing me the details for that item.
In the last days, I have read and learned a lot about the possibilities and interdependences of the gos mechanism using many of the hints and advices which were given here in the forum in the past. But I'am not able to achieve the wished effect via gos (send object with note) from within our application.
My guess, we need to start an instance of the object before we can show details for the wished item. In the normal case, the application shows at the left windows with containers/trees for search filters and items and within the main window on the right the details for that item. Starting this transaction a popup-window appears (showing the standard filter) where you can give the wished item no.
As I remarked, starting all these things from within the swo1 environment everything is functioning as expected...
Is there anybody who has made a similar experience and can give me some advice what we have to do to succeed in?? Is there any function module of kind SWU..., SWE... SWO... or something else which is to be called in front of that task???
I forgot to mention that within our application, there is the correct? built up of the gos-object via class cl_gos_manager constructing the needed object and the needed key, so when calling the gos-action, the bypassed sap user finds the link in the inbound position and will be directed to the correct transaction with the side effects described before.
Wish you all together a happy new year.
    Kind regards
    Christian

    My freind  ,
in the   Bussiness Objects  migatration there is  no select-options  like
sending  range of data  or the multiple selections.
for this we need separate   loop structure   where in we can send the multiple   data  and everytime it calls the  BAPI Obect  evertime  individaully ,
if you want the  you have to  define  one  new   BOR  object  (Custom bapi)...then  rignt  one  function module for   select-options and  attach it to  you method  in the BAPI   .
So that   your  BAPI calls  in the SAP  function Module   for  range of data .
Reward  points if it is  usefull ....

  • Themes from panther discs?

I have Tiger installed now, but can't find my idvd themes after a repair done recently. I have been combing this forum and can't find how to put the themes back on.
I found the packages, but there is no idvd package. I downloaded some of the free themes that are listed in the forum, but I liked my old themes better.
    I am a real novice at this...help?
    Thank you.

You can extract the older iDVD from the installation discs that came with your computer with Pacifist and then open that application and drag out the theme packages from the Resources folder. You might not need Pacifist. Open the installation disks, maybe the Software Restoration one, and select the install package icon. It's usually an alias so Control-click on it and select Show Original. Then can open some of the other packages you'll find with the Control-Click, Show package contents, and locate the iDVD package. I believe there may also be an iDVD theme package.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.
