Problems starting up my intel macbook

hi im having problems with my intel macbook and was looking for ideas. To cut a long story short the laptop kept cutting out on me for no apparent reason. Now there is a firmware update to fix this which i now know. But the last time it cut out was in the middle of a rather large systems update (with about 1% left). Now every time i turn on my laptop it says.
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x009bddf): unable to find drive for this platform: "ACPI".
debugger called: <panic>
backtrace, format - frame : return address (4 potential args on stack)... a whole load of numbers and letters...
kernel version: darwin kernel version 8.6.2: date and a root file.
"you need to restart your computer. hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button".
Its doing this every time i turn it on. So i thought i would reinstall the system. It booted from disc fine but when it came to restart after the reinstalling the system same thing. Any ideas? I really dont want to have to send it back and wait weeks and weeks for it to get fixed.

Hope you get it to work ...make sure you inserting the disc at the right time as well...
7. Turn on the computer and continue holding down the power button until the LED blinks rapidly followed immediately by a successive series of blinks (3 quick blinks, 3 slow blinks, 3 quick blinks). Insert the Firmware Restoration CD while the lights are blinking, then release the Power button.
8. Insert the Firmware Restoration CD. You will hear a long tone once the recovery process has begun.

  • Problem starting up a black Macbook

    Hi all,
I'm having a few problems with a black Macbook (Intel Core Duo 2GHz) I've been given (I was warned of the faults) and I hope someone will be able to point me in the right direction. The warranty on the machine has long since expired. The hard drive was broken, but I've swapped in one from another Macbook, which works fine.
    1. When I hit the power button on the machine, there's a momentary flash from the LCD, then the machine goes dead. This happens every time. To get the machine to start up, I now have to hold down the power button for 10 seconds until the light on the front starts flashing and the Macbook emits a loud beep. Then the machine starts as normal.
    2. Once in the OS (Leopard), the fan goes nuts and hovers around 6000RPM all the time. I've followed various bits of advice regarding this, including using Activity Monitor to track down rogue processes (nothing above 3% CPU usage), print jobs (none), etc. The fan is sitting at a healthy 41 degrees Celcius (105 Fahrenheit). I've downloaded smcFanControl, but for some reason I can't get this to run. I double-click the icon, but nothing happens -- weird. I don't really think manually controlling the fan speed addresses the root cause anyway.
Edit: I've also tried an SMC reset for the fan problem, but this did not solve the problem.
Edit 2: Just discovered another problem, which is more than likely related to point 1. The machine was in sleep mode with the lid shut. I lifted the lid and the LCD came on so I could see my desktop then the machine abruptly went dead.
Do I have a borked logic board?

    Hi Lyssa,
Thanks for your response. Yes, I have the original discs for the machine.
I've just booted the machine into safe mode (still had to do the same trick of holding down the power button for 10 seconds or so), but it made no difference. The fan's still spinning at 6200RPM.
Just noticed one thing. Right before I get the Apple logo when the machine boots, I get a flashing folder icon with a question mark in it. This lasts for only 1 second. I can confirm that the hard drive is perfectly functional as it boots just fine in my other Macbook.

  • Westinghouse 32w3 LCD HDTV + Intel MacBook 1G Problem

I just bought the DVI cables for my macbook, so I can watch dvd's 'n stuff on ye olde tv. Unfortunately, when I set the TV to it's highest progressive resolution (1360x768) the image on the tv is shifted to the left AND there is a weird vertical bar on the left portion of the screen where everything is cut off. If necessary, I can take a picture to show this.
Does anybody know how to fix this problem?
Note: I've read the other forum posts, there are no overscan options on my tv, and I played with the ones on the laptop.
Correction: the display isn't working properly on 1280x1024 either. The right side drags out (don't know how to explain it) and the left side is still cut off a bit.
    Thanks.

That's the whole thing? Usually there is a lot more information in EDID about timings the TV/monitor expects. Here is a typical EDID:

  • IDvd 5 problem on Intel Macbook!

I am having problems running iDVD 5 on Intel Macbooks. iDVD 5 loads up, the themes show up in the side tray and the music plays. However, the themed "images and drop zones" are not visible in the main window.... in its place, only a black background with the word "Travel cards" on the Travel theme, "Memories" on the Memories theme, etc, etc.
I've deleted every reference to iDVD (packages, plists, aliases, etc.) Emptied trash, rebooted, reinstalled and repaired permissions.

    Good suggestions.
All updates in OS, DVD and QT done.
Oddly, if I dig down and open any theme's "package contents" the background image (tif) and other components can be opened and viewed. So strange.

  • I am using a Macbook Air mid 2012 and an apple application "Mail". With only one email account (Yahoo), everything works perfectly. But the problem started when I added GMAIL account. Now it keeps on asking for my password for gmail and keychain.

With only Yahoo account in my Macbook Air "Mail", everything works perfectly. Problem started when I added my Gmail account. It keeps on asking my account and keychain passwords. And all my accounts always works offline.

It sounds like you may need to go into Mail>Preferences>Accounts and Complete setting up you Gmail account.  It may not be finished being setup.  For instance, note the line below to be selected from the drop down list in "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP", then  "Edit SMTP Server List":

  • Problems viewing HDV .mov file with Intel MacBook

I have a HD QuickTime file exported from FCP HD on G5 PowerPC. I cannot play this file on my intel macbook, I get a white screen.
    Any idea why?
    Thanks
    Brian

You'll need to copy the Apple HDV Codec to your MacBook. Since it won't be Intel native (unless you get FCP 5.1) you'll have to force QuickTime Player to run in Rosetta; it should be a setting in the Get Info window for QT Player. You should then be able to view the video (though I haven't tested this myself).
    Hope this helps.

  • 2007 Intel MacBook Pro Pinwheels and Loss of Sound

    Hello all,
So, about three weeks my 15" 2007-model Intel MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard began acting very strangely. All at once, after my computer had been on for most of the day, the toolbar item processes like Airport, Sound, Time Machine, etc. all began to display rainbow pinwheels of doom, with about a 10-second return to normality every ten minutes or so. This caused computer actions like playing sound, connecting to internet, opening force-quit, changing volume, etc. to only occur (and all at once) within that 10-second window. Other processes like Safari ran smoothly but very slowly--tabs would reset themselves, Flash refused to load, pages did not change for tens of seconds.  Looking at my activity monitor, I could see that my CPUs were mostly idle, so I think that rules out some kind of malware coming in and gumming up the system. I tried restarting Finder, and then restarting the computer, but neither had any effect, and I also noticed that while shutting down, my computer would display the gray startup screen and a gray loading pinwheel for several minutes between leaving the desktop and powering off.
However, this behavior went away after that night, and so I dismissed it as a minor problem and thought no more of it. In the intervening three weeks (about a week-and-a-half ago), I upgraded my machine to Lion so that I could start an iOS coding project for work--as I upgraded, I also got rid of a Boot Camp Windows partition I'd been carrying around and didn't need anymore.
For the first two weeks, everything went fine, and there were no problems with Lion. However, this pinwheeling/slowdown problem has returned with a vengeance! The same symptoms have appeared, except they are becoming less and less intermittent/more persistent.
I have also been able to verify that my software is completely up to date, and that restarts have no effect on this new appearance of my issue. It seems to come and go as it pleases.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on or how to fix it?

the toolbar item processes like Airport, Sound, Time Machine, etc. all began to display rainbow pinwheels of doom,
For the toolbar issue... it's actually referreed to as the menu bar.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    Clicik Go
Move the  com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
If that didn't help, use Lion Recovery  to repair the startup disk if necessary, or reinstall the Mac OS X.

  • Problems starting up

Hello all. ive recently begun to have problems with my macbook and i dont know whats up.
My problem started when I had to reset my macbook one day and found that it would not boot up again. After trying everything i could, such as starting in safe mode and using single user mode, resetting the PRAM and SMC and such. I found i could now start up my macbook after it resets itself several times in about 5-10 mins.
Once im able to do things within the OS I tried repairing my disk permissions and the disk but apparently nothing was wrong, even after doing an archive and install.
There are no programs in my users startup options or in the start up folder.
I am also the only user of this macbook as i use it for Logic/Pro-tools/Reason and such.
I got new RAM and hard drive for the machine about a month ago (2x 2GB) and its been working smoothly since then. But just in case i put the old RAM back in and old hard drive. but alas the results are the same.
I also used the tool that comes with the apple care pack and apparently everything is working fine, much to my confusion. I am now running the AHT by holding the "D" key on startup and so far it has froze once on a long test (after being stuck on 45mins for about half an hour. Im doing another one right now but its being very slow. Im currently on 1h 15min... and the progress bar does not seem to be budging from about 60%. It also says pass number 2, if that helps)
Im fed up now because i start uni again soon and I NEED this to be working. Will they replace it for me? I live in Coventry and the nearest apple store on the website is in Solihul. Although there is a premium apple reseller or something called KRCS)
To let you know the macbook is a 2.1GHz intel core 2 duo with 4GB RAM (Originally 1) 7200.4 RPM 250GB SATA hard drive (previously 120GB, unsure of the speed...probably 5200 or something) 13.3 inch screen with a Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor

    HI,
If you have AppleCare then take the Mac in for service at an Apple store or Apple certified repair provider.
We can't say if Apple will replace the MacBook. This is a user to user forum. We are volunteers. All we can do is make suggestions.
If you haven't tried booting from the install disk and verifying the startup disk for errors, then try that. This is not the same as repairing disk permissions or the AHT.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
    *Check available disk space.*
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.*

  • Strange wifi problem on a brand-new MacBook Pro

Hey there, I'm new here. Desperation has got the better of me, and I hope I can get some advice.
So, last sunday I bought a brand new 13" MacBookPro with 2.8g i7 processor and 10.7.2 OS (I can't update to 10.7.4 because System Update tells me the download has been tampered with or corrupted after I waited 2 hours for it to finish, but I'm trying a direct download from the website). Here's the exact product: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MD314LL-13-3-Inch-VERSION/dp/B005CWIZ4O/ref= sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1340301247&sr=8-5&keywords=macbook+pro+13
Everything is all perfect except for a strange wifi problem. Note that the wifi does not turn-on or off, it doesn't disconnect after 'sleep', it doesn't get less speed, it doesn't constantly leave a preferred connection (once I chose my home wifi it always connects to it no problem). The wifi bar is always full. What is wrong is that the internet is kinda 'glitchy'. The best metaphor I can think of is that it's like a car that has to be pushed down the road before the engine can start. Please, bear with me because this is kinda hard to explain and I'm not good at tech lingos.
One of the symptoms is browsing can get really slow and inconsistent, almost as if the wifi gets turned off in the middle of browsing. For example: if I look something up on Google and then open 5 new tabs, probably only 2 or 3 of those tabs will eventually load while the other two will not get past the long 'http:.......google.....etc etc' address and will eventually show one of those 'error loading page because there's no Internet connection' notice. This happens a lot. Sometimes I have to refresh/retry loading a page a couple of times before it finally loads, then usually everything will get back to normal and I will be able to open multiple tabs with no problem, but in a couple of minutes I would try to open another site and the problem will start again.
So I tried to see how it does with downloading using iGetter. Fortunately I also have a Macbook (white-plastic casing one) and my brother has an old 2006 MacbookPro so I can compare. With those two older Apples iGetter starts receiving data in less than 8 seconds after I click Start, while my brand-new Macbook Pro can take up to 15-20 seconds, sometimes it doesn't even start at all and I have to re-click the start button. But once the download actually starts (on my new MacBook Pro), it downloads like normal, it doesn't stop and the speed is also as good as I can get. Strange huh? Hence, like a car that has to be pushed before the engine starts.
I also tried 'speed testing' from a website with all 3 laptops. On my old MacBook and my brother's MacBook pro, once I click 'begin test' it takes only a couple of seconds of 'ping' before the download/upload speed measurements start, but with my new MacBook Pro (just like with iGetter) it takes up to almost a minute before the measurements start, sometimes it won't start at all and I have to re-start the test.
Well, thanks for reading. And hope you can help me shed some light into this. Because it is really preventing me from really enjoying my new MacBook Pro. And if this is most likely a hardware problem, I'd better get back to the store and try to get it replace or something while it's only been 5 days. *cheers*

Hey guys.. Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I bought the MacBook in Indonesia where there are no such thing as an AppleCare. The only option is to leave the Apple product to one of the 'Authorized Apple care centre' and have whoever do whatever to it without guarantee of success. As for returning it and getting a brand new one, I also don't know if there is such a deal here, but that's actually a good idea, will try to go to the store tomorrow. Although, I'm worried that the problem might be with OSX Lion or something and getting a new one won't help.
mark75090, I've tried resetting the router when I first noticed te problem, didn't work though. I've checked my new MacBook's wi-fi (option+click wifi bar) and it says 'PHY Mode: 802.11g', so does my MacBook and the old MacBook Pro. I don't know what those mean though, and I don't know whether or not my router is an N., can you tell me more please.. I have tried with the other two turned off, and only the new MacBook using the wi-fi but the problem persists. I have also tried connecting directly to the router, but as I described, the problem is too subtle for me to notice the difference.
Also, if I create a brand new Wi-Fi connection in network preferences and connect to my router through the new Wi-Fi profile, the problem seems to be gone for an hour or so, then it always comes back though. I have also just finally installed 10.7.4, but it doesn't help either.

  • Unable to load Flash 9 on my Intel MacBook Pro

Unable to load Flash 9 on my Intel MacBook Pro but can on my
Intel iMac. I spoke with a Tech from the Mac Store service area and
was told that there in a thread on this issue but I can't find it.
The basic issue is that I am able to load Adobe Flash Player
9 on my Intel iMac but not on my Intel MacBook Pro and I'm unable
to determain why. I tryed uninstalling and reinstalling three times
    and found no difference.
If someone could help me I'd be thankful.
    Dave

I bought the $29 version of Snow Leopard (not the kosher way of doing things, i know.
If you read the license agreement, there's actually no difference between what's allowed with the $29 copy and the $169 boxed set. The only difference is that the boxed set also includes iLife and iWork. There is also, despite what some will have you believe, nothing in the license agreement that requires Leopard to be pre-installed except in the case of the $10 disk purchased as part of the Up-to-Date program (for folks who bought a machine shortly before SL was released). So, you're not being bitten by some technical requirement for Leopard to be present.
I get a flashing folder with a question mark. My disk drive makes some crazy noises as well, and it seems to start running fast, then slowing down. I think it may have caused a minor scratch on the disk as well.
Sounds like it's possible the drive could be failing, though that's impossible to say for sure remotely. One man's crazy noises are another man's normal state of operations. Do other DVDs work in your drive?
I'll also need to do an "Archive & Install" since there are tons of important files on this machine.
*DO NOT* attempt to install a system update on this machine unless you have good backups! If something goes wrong, you're screwed if you didn't have a backup. Hopefully, you have not reached that point already... I'm unclear on whether your machine is no longer able to boot, or if it's only having trouble when you try to boot from the SL disk.
If your machine is still functional, your first priority before doing *+anything else+* should be to make at least two backups. See my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> for assistance with this.
If your machine can't boot anymore, let us know and we'll offer some troubleshooting tips. And don't try to do anything else with it until you've consulted with some expert, whether here or at an Apple Store or somewhere else.

  • [SOLVED]Asus UX32VD, problems with ACPI and Intel video driver

    1. The bigger problem seems to be Intel video driver:
When xf86-video-intel is installed, screen stays black after booting. By adding "nomodeset" to grub doesn't help. If I don't start gdm while booting, I can boot to command line with "nomodeset".  From command line I tried "startx", but X doesn't start, probably because "nomodeset" has disabled KMS and I've understood that Intel driver needs KMS for GNOME.
When xf86-video-vesa is installed instead of intel driver, screen is still black. By adding "nomodeset" to grub, I can see only mouse at gdm. If rebooting computer without gdm, I can start gnome from command line with startx and it works nice.
In both setups I can connect to laptop with ssh when screen is black. With ssh I checked screen brightness, but it was maximum.
    Intel driver version: xf86-video-intel 2.20.1-3
    2. The problem with ACPI is found from dmesg, I don't think this effects to graphics problem, because with vesa driver and "acpi=off" set to grub I can start Gnome with startx. I don't even know if it effects at all on my system, dmesg shows error which effects to displayport( intel_dp_i2c_aux_ch error) these maybe related to each others:

There is log files while booting with Intel driver and gdm set to start at boot in rc.conf, the screen is black, but got logs with ssh:

I tried to boot with Intel driver with "drm.debug=14" and "log_buf_len=16M"  as boot parameters. There is debug log from gdm, it seems to have some errors, I have not yet looked deeble on it:

My wireless keyboard no longer connects with my iMac since changing the batteries. It now shows as not connected, not paired and not configured. A friend recently connected his iPad to the iMac and since then the problem started. Any ideas to resolve this?

a friend told me that he wants my os x cd for my macbook pro to upgrade his imac.
The discs that come with your Mac are "machine specfic" and cannot be used on another Mac.

Can not start up on my Macbook pro. All I get is a grey spinning wheel. Tried all the Startup key combinations and nothing works. I reset the NVRAM and nothing. I booted with start up disk , ran disk repair and all is ok. Tried to re-install OS but when I get to designating drive its blank. When I go to startup disk there is a "?" mark. When I restart under startup disk search for a drive it still comes up with nothing.  Before I got the grey spinning wheel I had a locked screen. Could not move curser or click on anything. Finally just shut down. Thank you in advance for any help!

Shouldn't still have a 'beachballing'... if the drive is being found and the system is trying to boot from it but is having problems, I would suggest looking over ds store's user tip - Step by step to fix your Mac.
It's likely either something corrupt in your system files or a failing hard drive. But follow ds's steps until you find the cause of the problem.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • After start Windows 8 on Macbook Air (late 2011) all freeze.

When I start Windows 8 on Macbook Air (late 2011) all freeze. If I switch off Wi-Fi adapter or power unit problem does not exist. Do you have same problem?

Here's how to fix the problem.
    Macbook air 2011 freeze fix
    1. Install Windows using Boot camp on battery power (AC adapter unplugged).
    2. After the installation, right click on the power icon.
    3. Click More power options
    4. Click change plan settings for the balanced plan
    5. Click change Advanced power settings
    6. Select "PCI Express"
    7. Selct Link state power management
    8. Change Plugged in from Moderate to OFF.
Done! No more crashing. Now you can plug in your AC adapter.
