Problems swapping external displays

I use my MacBookPro with two external displays (not simultaneously), with the MBP lid shut. I have an Apple 20" cinema dispay in the office and an Acer (can't remember the model) at home. When I take my MBP home and plug it into the Acer the MBP does not properly recognise the external monitor and it just stays black showing the spinning "busy" wheel. The same thing happens when I plug in my Apple display after using the Acer. Sometimes, after about one or two minutes, the display finally appears as it should. Otherwise I have to switch the power supply off and on again to put the MBP to sleep and then wake it again to refresh the screen.
For two years, I was using the same two monitors with my G4 Powerbook without any problem whatsoever. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution to it?

Are you sure that the external power supply is properly connected to your MBP? I have occasionaly wondered why my external monitor was not working when connected to laptop with lid shut. Then discovered that it will not work unless the laptop is connected to the external power supply.
A phone call to a very helpful Apple support technician solved my problem. Apparently the memory needed to be refreshed (or something like that). This was done by rebooting the computer and holding down the following four keys together: AppleAlt+pr.
You hold down these four keys while the computer boots and release them after the second chime.
However, as I am not an expert, I have no idea if this is relevant to your issue.

  • Update to 10.6.8 colour problems with external display

I have a mid-2010 13" macbook pro. I use a mini DVI to HDMI adaptor to connect to my Philips LCD TV. It has always worked perfectly including audio. Since update to 10.6.8 (yesterday) there is a colour-cast on the external display that makes it unusable. I have tried a hard reset of the mac with no effect except that the colour cast changed from green to red (strange!).
Anyone had a similar problem or have any ideas how I could solve it? (no time machine so I can't downgrade unfortunately)

Though I am using and iMac 27 and not a macbook, I have the similar issues since the 10.6.8 update.
I too am using the adapter to connect to a Philips 42' LCD.
You can see my post here: (has a pic of what my TV image now looks like since update.)
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15488605#15488605
I ended up going back to 10.6.7, not a fix, but no other alternative..
I used to have this problem a year ago on a PC that happened to have the same ATi Graphics card. I just used the ATI control center and changed a setting to YBR component or something like that in some color settings. But unfortunately we don't have the ATI control panel for mac, least I don't think we have any kind of alternative, but would prolly fix it..

  • Dock Problem with External Display

I have a macbook hooked up to an external monitor. I made the external display the primary display so it has the menubar and main desktop, but for some reason the dock wont move from the macbook's display, which is the secondary one. I tried restarting the dock, using killall in terminal and restarting, unplugging and replugging, switching to mirroring and back again, and all sorts of other things. My friend has the exact same setup and his works fine; what's going on here? Thanks so much

I was able to fix this problem on my iMac using your suggestion. It appears that if the external display is arranged to touch either the left or right side of the Mac display, then the two displays are handled as a single desktop. "Left" places the dock on the left side of the combined desktop, "right" places it on the right.
When I changed the arrangement so that the external display was touching only the top or the bottom of the Mac display, "left" and "right" became the left and right of the Mac display, and my dock is back where I like it.

  • Mouse skipping problem when external display connnected

I recently purchased a Macbook, and I connect it to a Dell 3008 display using the mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adaptor. My issue is that when the Dell is connected and in use, the mouse pointer skips across the screen when I move it, like something is interrupting the input for a very brief period, and it's being interpolated wrongly when the input comes back.
The problem doesn't occur when the external display is disconnected, and it happens with wired USB, wireless USB and wireless Bluetooth mice.
No adjustment of mouse sensitivity options seems to fix it, and the interruption in the pointer movement seems to happen at semi regular intervals of between 5 and 10 seconds apart, although I can't be 100% sure.
Interestingly, it doesn't happen when I connect a lower resolution external display using the same adaptor. So it only happens at 2560x1600. I'm wondering if it's a problem with a hardware accelerated mouse cursor and the NVIDIA graphics driver.
Anyway, it's a real barrier to me using the Macbook, so hopefully someone has a solution.
    Thanks!

Same problem here: wireless MS Laser Mouse 6000, either a samsung or LG external display connected via mini adaptor. Have the MS intellipoint drivers installed. It began to happen about a fortnight ago, and seemed to coincide with the Java update 4/Bluetooth Firmware/ Safari update applied on 24/6. This may have been around the time I changed display preference to 'best performance', so could well be a graphics driver issue?
In my case, it tends to happen in certain spots on the screen, and the likelihood of a skip seems to depends on the speed I'm moving the pointer. Faster = more likely.
It's messing up my tanking in warcraft something terrible.

  • Problem with external displays

I've an issue with my MBP 15'' Early 2013. Recently I'd the GPU problem and my logic board was replaced. Everything worked fine as usual but I never tried to connect it to an external display.
When I first connected a projector after the logic board change via a VGA adapter I wan unable to make it work, the computer had one of this two problems:
Screen goes black and nothing works
Computer gets too slow and I can't do anything but move the cursor
Then I tried with a TV via HDMI and everything worked fine. I tried then with an external monitor, another projector and a TV with VGA and nothing worked.
I searched in internet and most of the people has this problem with both VGA and HDMI. But I didn't found anyone with only the VGA problem.
I tried resetting the PRAM, changing resolution to all the available ones and nothing worked.
Before the logic board was replaced the external displays worked great.
    Any idea?
    Thank you!

Hey, I had something similar happening with my i5 going to a Dell U2410, but my connection was via HDMI. When I got that distortion however I could not recover from it and had to reboot my laptop. I switched to an analog connector & noticed the occasional flicker to black, almost like my cable was loose and got bumped, but it recovered fine each time. I'm testing now with a dvi cable, and so far no issues *knock on wood*. Sorry, no fix, but maybe try a different connection and see if it improves things for you.
    Cheers!

  • Mouse cursor problem when external display connected

When my external Apple display is connected to my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012, 10.10.2) the cursor jumps to a spot on the external display and will not release from it. I move the cursor anywhere and it jumps back to that original spot. Cursor operates normally when the external monitor is not attached. I've used the monitor for a few years with no problem, but this started just recently. I do not use the external monitor daily and I cannot recall doing anything that might have triggered this problem. Any ideas on a fix? Thanks.
    Bill

Just an update to close this. Call Apple Support. An advanced support tech walked me through several procedures. Eventually, the problem disappeared after deleting a bunch of plist files and startup items. Which particular file caused the problem we don't know. But problem gone and I will monitor going forward. Hopefully it was a one-time corruption of one of the preference files.

  • Problem Connecting external display

    I Have a MacBook Pro 13" from early 2011, 2.3ghz Core i5, 4Gb RAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000 384mb with OSx 10.7.4 (11E53)
I'm having some trouble connecting external displays via the ThunderBolt port using a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter.
I have to go the settings -> Screens -> Detect Screens to connect or disconnect any kind of display.

    Not sure.
All I did was plug my dell monitor's cable into the mini display adapter and boom, it worked.
Is there any way you can validate that the monitor is working, and/or try this out on another display. Sounds like its either not compatible, or something is defective. (monitor, mini-display adapter, MPB)

  • Keyboard shortcut for swapping external display settings?

I have Summer '07 Macbook and it has a dedicated F-key for switching between the various settings when an external monitor is attached. I'm considering one of the newer Macbooks (and giving mine to my wife) but have noticed that key is missing. I also had a recent experience with a friend who was trying to plug his Macbook into an external monitor. We could not find a quick way to switch between a "mirror" and "dual" display. (Actually, we couldn't even find a slow way, but I think that's just because we're kinda dumb )

Not that I'm aware of- I searched the keyboard shortcuts in CC for "swap" and "swap color" and it's not even listed as an option. I wouldn't mind Adobe adding more keyboard shortcuts for UI buttons for those who want to spend less time using the mouse.
Here's a workaround that might help: if you already have some artwork on the stage with the color you want, use the eyedropper tool (I) to pick either the line or fill color. Holding shift sets both the line and fill to the color you pick.

  • Resolution problem on external display on Macbook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

Hi there guys. I recently bought a 23inch Dell Ultrasharp display for my 15inch Macbook pro.
Max resolution I can get from the screen is 1080p. Althought, I've noticed a weird thing.
After using my screen for like 2 and a half weeks, when I started my Macbook today the external monitor had a fixed 600x800 resolution which I couldn't change from the display menu on system prefs. Actually, I don't even get any resolution options when I choose the scaled radio button. So I can't do anything.
I can't reset pram cause obviously command+option+p+r don't work regardless the way I press them (i just get the recovery screen).
And its the same thing on windows as well (using bootcamp), fixed resolution and no option to change it.
Thing is that I updated my Macbook's ram from 4 to 8gigs from crucial. At first everything was fine but again after a restart this occured again.
I opened the case and used one 4gig from crucial and the default 2gig from apple. It worked for the screen and I got back to max resolution.
Then put the 8gigs again, worked fine for 2.5 weeks and now this again.
Do you think that this has anything to do with ram or its just Mountain Lion?
    Looking forward for your help!!!
    Many Thanks, Thanos.
(forgot to mention, I'm using a minidisplay to display port cable)

    Give this a shot.

  • Late 2008 MBP problems with external display (kernel panic)

I have an intermittently recurring kernel panic with a similar signature in the backtrace. In my case it only happens while playing World of Warcraft with an external monitor attached (and even then, only while doing particular things -- not necessarily high load activities, either). I ran a full set of diagnostics (Apple Hardware Test in full mode, and also Tech Tool Deluxe from the Applecare CD) and neither found any problems.
Anyway, here's my panic log, hoping that somebody will be able to help out. I'll be taking this in for service when I have a couple of days I can spare without my laptop.

  • 10.6.5 Problems with external Display

Hi, I'm getting crazy... Yesterday Night I update my MBP to the Os 10.6.5 and this morning i try to connect my MBP to the LCD and nothing just for a few second the display change to blue trying to recognize the lcd and then nothing, can anyone tell me how to fix the problem? tks a lot

I'll throw a few things out for you to consider or try (in no particular order):
    1. Reset SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964)
    2. Reset PRAM (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html).
    3. In the Displays Preferences play around with resolutions and Detect Displays.
    Good luck.

  • Late 2010 Unibody MacBook -- Resolution problems with external display...

    Hi Apple Community,
I have a late 2010 white unibody which I've been using with my 30" LCD TV, both as a secondary monitor and in clamshell mode. I connect with an apple display to hdmi cable. I've been using this setup for a few months and it has always looked FANTASTIC. Never any issues. Then out of the blue, just the other day, the resolution on my 30" had become all screwed up. Now it is very pixelated, color and resolution are all off, and everything lags.
What I've tried so far: I've checked all the display settings in system prefs. Res set to 1080i, color calibration is set to factory settings, etc. I restarted multiple times, with the monitor connected and without. I rebooted in safe mode to reset all display settings to factory. I've checked my cords, used the secondary hdmi port on my TV, messed with display settings on the television and still NOTHING.
I cannot for the life of me figure out why this suddenly started happening. Any suggestions would be greatly greatly GREATLY appreciated! (I had to watch Game of Thrones on my computer screen! My 13" computer screen! Oh! The indignity!)
    Thank you all in advance!
PS - I run Lion and all software is up to date!

  • Very frustrating problem with external display-works but doesn't

I just set up my new LED Viewsonic monitor with my new MBA and it works flawlessly...except when I first want to hook it up. When I first want to use it I plug everything (laptop is closed) and then proceed to turn on the monitor. When the monitor turns on it shows white noise UNTIL I open my laptop and go to the general settings. Why the heck is this happening?! I have it from HDMI out to a HDMI>DVI converter into the back of the monitor. It's just annoying and seems very peculiar. This also happens when everything is already working and the computer goes to sleep and I try to wake it up=white noise, until I open it up and go to the display tab under general settings.
I appreciate any help that anyone can offer!!
    Thank you!

I feel kind of stupid, but I guess I all I had to do was wait about 5-10 seconds and then it worked. Nevermind

  • External display problems with snow leopard

I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my Macbook and it's created lots of problems with my LCD external display:
    - The display won't work at its native resolution (1680x1050) - it will flash up an image for 1/10 of second and then go black. I can only get it to work at a lower resolution, which looks AWFUL.
    - If I try to start up my Macbook with the lid closed and the display connected, the display won't work at all (it jams on the start up screen). It only works if I keep both of them running
I never had these problems when using Leopard. I've searched lots of forums and found that many people are having similar problems with external displays. Apple still haven't fixed the bug after repeated efforts from people to get if fixed.
Here are some threads (now closed) on this if you're looking for solutions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2132912&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2136455&tstart=1

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10084332
    Common suggested fixes are:
    - Force OS X to use LCD font smoothing (does not work for me)
    - Clear the PRAM on start-up (does not work for me)
    - Delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist (does not work)
    - Change energy management setting to high performance (only works on graphics cards in Macbook 15" and 17").
From reading these forums it appears that this is a well-know bug. Has anyone else got any suggestions to fix this? And why hasn't Apple fixed this yet after so many people bringing it to their attention? It's clearly a bug that wasn't in Leopard.

I'M FED UP WITH APPLE! They've always been a little shady, but the last half of 2010 took the cake!
First it was the iPhone 3g "upgrade" to IOS4 which was garbage and killed my ability to use the 3g until I figured out how to crack the software, wipe the thing clear then reinstall the original software. Next up was purchasing the iphone 4 as a Christmas gift for someone running tiger on their mac, only to find out that the iphone 4 doesn't work on tiger when they tried to sync their contacts - and then having to rush out and purchase snow leopard so that they could enjoy my gift. Then I install Snow Leopard (note - I purchased the family pack) onto my own leopard-running(10.5.+) powerbook only to have the external LCD display I've been using for years suddenly stop working.
Oh, okay, to be fair, it works IF I RESIGN MYSELF TO SET it to "mirror image" (which defeats the purpose of having multiple displays) and drop the resolution down to a pathetic, unsharp, nearly distored setting that is almost painful to look at knowing that this monitor was just A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO showing me crystal clear images.
Then I exhaust myself trying to find a fix only to discover that APPLE in their infinite brilliance (AKA - their torture of loyal customers) knows of the issue - worked it out - then created an update that created the issue all over again. I'm so done! No more macs. I'm going back to the evil land of PCs. At least there, you know you're getting crap, it doesn't sneak up on you after getting you to trust it time and time again.
