Problems syncing 64GB iPad 2 to MacBook Air 1st Generation

Before I had an iPad, I used a MacBook Air for portable applications and travel. I never kept much on my MacBook Air (just word files, and the occasional song or photo). I had an old iMac for home use, and to sync with my little mini-iPod for the gym. (The iMac has a huge photo archive and gym music; the MacBook Air has some old precious family photos, some recent trip photos, and a more car-friendly, thoughtful collection of music. It also now has back-up from all my iPad 2 applications, books, movies, iTunes classes, and music)
Since May, I have been backing up my iPad 2 64GB to my 1st Gen MacBook Air, and loading more photos and songs on my iPad and my Air. Silly me...I clearly wasn't planning ahead...since there are only 72GB of memory on the 1st Generation Airs. So, of course, now the iPad 2 has 36GB or so of data on it, and the MacBook Air has run out of room. I can no longer sync, and all the apps on the Air are running slow!
I tried moving all media files off the Air to a 1TB external storage device, but that's unruly. When I try to sync, I get difficult questions about whether I want to "replace all files on the iPad 2"? And even if I were brave enough to say "yes", with so many files on an external device, the MacBook Air no longer feels portable.
I'm open to buying new hardware (say, a MacMini, or--after taking some months for saving money, a new laptop or desktop). Or combining iTunes profiles and photos somehow between my iMac and Air, and then syncing to the iMac instead of the Air, and letting the Air become once again a relatively empty portable laptop. Or will the iCloud solve all my problems?
I'm looking for suggestions and solutions....

I had the same beeping problem, using an apple cable plugged directly into one of my iMac's USB ports.  Worse, at one point in trying to eliminate my iPad Air beeping, iTunes would not recognize my iPad as a device.  After trying various remidies I saw posted, I elimited the beeping and was able to sync with my iMac by doing the folowing:
1.  Restart both my iMac and iPad, with them disconnected, and an apple connection cable in one of the iMac's USB ports (not in a USB hub).
2.  Open iTunes on the iMac
3.  Eject every device that iTunes identifies, even though they are not connected (for me, two iphones and my wife's iPad).  After uyou eject the last device, the "x devices" button will disappear.
4.  Connect the iPad Air to the iMac via the Apple cable.  I heard a single beep, and iTunes found my iPad in about 5 seconds.
5.  I was then able to sync/backup my iPad to the iMac.
Hope this works for others.

After I sync my ipad with my macbook air, the apps show up in my itunes on my computer,  but when I click on them nothing happens.

    Kristyn,
Those Apps listed in the iTunes Apps library will only work with iOS devices. They are not designed to work on your Macbook Air system.

  • Macbook Air (1st Generation) is crazy slow - running on 10.6.8

A friend just gave me his old macbook air (1st generation) to see if I can get it into working condition. It currently works and is running on 10.6.8, however it is EXTREMELY slow.. I am wondering if it is possible/recommended to revert to 10.5.6 - something I saw in another forum - but I'm not even sure how to do that. Anyways any simple tips (for a novice computer guy) would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

You can also free up some RAM and make the performance better by deactivating the Dashboard. Open terminal, and do the following command:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
    then do:
    killall Dock
I'm not sure yet how to activate it. This command doesn't erase the dashboard but it deactivates it. Or, you can just instead of deactivating it, remove all open things on the dashboard, such as the calculator, the note thingie, the clock, etc.

  • I synced my ipad with my macbook air but the contacts on the ipad were all deleted. Can't seem to find a way to restore them. Contacts on macbook unaffected

I tried syncing my ipad with my macbook and checked the box to replace the contacts on the ipad with the contacts on the macbook. Now the contacts on the ipad have been deleted (address book now empty). The macbook contacts have been unaffected. I'm not syncing with icloud. Any solution?

James Ward4  Thanks for your suggestion.  I have tried the video app and it appears to have some, but not all of the downloads which are viewable without wifi, so I will now review the download process and see if I can capture the missing episodes.  Thanks again.

  • Can I use a T-shaped connector with my MacBook Air 1st generation?

My charger recently stopped working and I was able to get a quick replacement. However, it's one of the old models of chargers with the T-shaped connector. WIll it still work with my MacBook Air. I know it's slanted downwards so that might pose a problem. Any answers or advice?

The Magsafe 1 connectors can be used both the T and the L.
The new Magsafe 2 connectors can't because they don't fit.

  • How do I get PDF's off my iPad to my Macbook Air

Hello!  I'm trying to sync my IPad with a Macbook air I just bought.  For some reason not all of my books and none of my PDF's are syncing.   How do I fix that?  Thank you

Basically, you don't sync from your device to your computer, rather vice-versa. The easiest way is if you have a PDF reader like GoodReader that will let you transfer PDFs using iTunes. Otherwise, you can email them to yourself, then recover the attachments from Mail on the computer.

If you mean using iCloud, go to Settings>iCloud on your iPad (requires iOS 5 or higher), sign in with your Apple ID to create your iCloud account, then turn on the data you want to sync with iCloud.  Then go to System Preferences>iCloud on your MacBook Air (requires OS X 10.7.5 or higher), sign in with the same ID and check the data you want to sync with iCloud.

  • Can some-one please tell me how to transfer photos from my ipad to my macbook air ? thanks

Can some-one please tell me how to transfer photos from my ipad to my macbook air ? thanks

To copy photos to your Mac that were taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites then see this page - on a Mac you can use Image Capture, iPhoto and Aperture.
To copy photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.

Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).

  • I am having problems syncing my iPad 2 with iTunes. Whenever I click "sync" or "apply," the sync begins. As soon as it gets to step 3 (in this particular case "determining apps to sync") it immediately stops syncing. What's the deal here?

You haven't purchased apps with multiple Apple ID's have you? If you have, you can only sync with one Apple ID in the iTunes library at a time. Whichever ID you are signed into on the computer and the iPad would determine which apps would sync.
Have all of your apps been transferred into iTunes for your iPad?

    Hey joshuafromisr,
If you resintall iTunes, it should fix the issue. The following document will go over how to remove iTunes fully and then reinstall. Depending on what version of Windows you're running you'll either follow the directions here:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP

    or here:

The application ITunes presumes that the information, data, music, etc in its database is the correct master. In doing so, it will overwrite and replace any information previously on the phone. You probably will want to transfer the iTunes data directory from it's original location (presumably the system yoiu used to sync with your iPhone previously), the the new system.
If your iPhone has data from a different Apple ID, than the ID you will use on the new notebook, then be prepared to lose the data on the phone if you sync. It's meant to work that way.
