Problems syncing and saving metadata

I realized the time on my D40 had crept 72 minutes off from what's right, so I wanted to go back and adjust the time in the NEF files. Early on with Lightroom, I learned not to do this inside Lightroom (posts like: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?224@@[email protected]/7), so I used exiftool. (Is this still true in Lightroom 1.3.1, or is "Edit Capture Time" safe to use now?)
Adjusting the dates inside the NEF files using exiftool works great, but now I have to get Lightroom to notice the changed dates. I hoped "Library->Synchronize Folder" with the "Scan for metadata updates" would do this, but it seems to have no effect. (Should or shouldn't it?)
If I do "Metadata->Read Metadata From File", it does notice the new dates, but also (after warning me) loses all the metadata and develop settings I've applied inside Lr. The develop settings reset actually shows up in the history, and it's easy to go back to the prior ones, but I have to do this for each photo. It seems the Synchronize feature would be a better way, if it worked.
I also still have problems with Lr refusing to actually create XMP sidecars for many of my files, even when I explicitly tell it "Metadata->Save Metadata To File". As far as I can tell, Lr doesn't actually write XMP when you do Save Metadata unless it thinks something's changed. Problem is, it doesn't always know when something's changed. A trivial example is: tell it to write the XMP data, then go delete the .xmp file, then go back to Lightroom and tell it to write the XMP file again; it won't. A less trivial example is what actually got my files into this state -- I copied the NEF files onto both my laptop and desktop computers, then added them to the Lightroom library on the laptop, did some stuff including writing the XMP files, exported a catalog with the new photos, and imported this catalog on the desktop. Now Lr on the desktop seems to think the XMP files exist there, even though they don't.
The reason I'm complaining about this in the same context as inability to sync metadata changes is it prevents me from doing a manual sync with no data loss: if Save Metadata always worked, then I could invoke that (putting Lr's current metadata in the XMP files), then tell exiftool to operate on both the NEF and XMP files, then tell Lr to read metadata, and a lot less metadata would be lost. But I can't convince it to write the XMP files in the first place.

Also, for a test image where I checked whether Lr still has the easy-to-demonstrate form of the won't-write-XMP problem, and I told it to write the XMP file, then deleted the XMP file from the Finder, then went back to LR, it's doing something new -- the metadata panel shows "sidecar files: .xmp", but the thumbnail in grid view has a question mark badge in the upper right which I don't remember seeing before. If I hover over the question mark, I get a tooltip which says "Sidecar file missing."
And still, if I tell Lr "Save metadata to file", it doesn't recreate the XMP file. Or complain more vociferously about the file which it knows is missing. Weird, huh?
If I click on that question mark icon, I get a dialog that says: "The following files (related to this photo) were present before, but are now missing", with the name of the .xmp file, and "The photo negative file is still present. Do you want to forget about the sidecar files, or continue to track them? [Continue to track] [Forget]".
If I choose "Continue to track", things stay exactly as they are (no .xmp file, but the question mark badge remains). If I choose "Forget", the question mark badge goes away, and "Sidecar files: .xmp" disappears from the metadata panel. But there's still no .xmp file, and the "Save metadata to file" command still doesn't create one.
Anybody know how I can force Lr to think it's worth its time to write the .xmp file?

  • Problems syncing and lots of "Other" data

I have a 32gb iPod Touch 5th gen running iOS 7. I have 2 major issues, as stated in the title.
The first is with syncing. As iTunes goes through the steps it gets stuck on "Waiting for items to copy" or "Waiting for changes to be applied;" whichever happens to be the last step. I've managed to get around this by stopping the automatic sync and clicking "Back Up Now" and "Sync" seperately. Frustraiting, but it worked. But lately I've been having to restore from a backup just to put a few new songs on it. And sometimes that doesn't even work.
On top of that there's been a growing mass of "Other" data. It's pretty firm at sitting around 7.27 gigs. I've gotten it to completely dissapear once (save for a few megabytes), but then discovered that half of the music that should be on my iPod wasn't (I have just under 15 gigs of music on it), and when I got it back on, the other data was back exactly the same size as before. inversely, it's jumped to as much as almost 10 gigs, but after a similar problem and fix, it shrank to 4.26.
I've heard the only way to get rid of either of these problems is to restore to factory settings, but I really don't want to do that since I have a lot of irriplacable data (game records, worlds in Minecraft, notes, etc.), but I'm afraid that may be my only option.
I can assure you I have my data under control, I understand how to delete unwanted data to free up space, so going through settings and deleting unused apps and data wont help. All in all I have precisely 14.97gb of music, 920.4mb of photos, 1.66gb of apps, 44mb of doccuments & data, now there's 8.17gb of other data, and only 2.24gb free.
Is there any way to fix this besides resetting? Any help is appreciated, I hope this makes sense, and thank you for reading.

These 8GB is mostly corrupted data I suppose.
Since you do sync and backup manually, when you look in iTunes now, goto preferences then the devices tab, you see two backups. is there one that has a date before this 8GB mess happened?
If yes, it is easy: connect, do the "RESTORE iPOD", then after that "restore from backup" and choose the older backup. Done.
If not, there is a problem, you cannot, as it is, restore from the backup, because that has all corrupted data in it.
Tell me and we will find a another way to get back your data, maybe not all. wait with restoring the ipod.

  • Problem syncing and greyed out songs on iTunes

I just recently switched from an iPhone 3gs to an iPhone 5. Before switching phones, I went on iTunes and clicked "back up" in case I wanted to transfer music, photos, etc. After switching, I decided to add new music onto my new iPhone. I don't use iTunes very much, so while trying to figure out how to put music onto my phone, I clicked "restore from backup." I was afraid some of my new apps would disappear, so I clicked cancel. I checked my phone and the only difference I saw was that I got my old bookmarks back from my old iPhone.
I went back to syncing my new music and figured it out, however, I noticed that every time I clicked "sync", it would sync for a little while, stop at "step 2: backing up" and then cancel. I think cancelling the "restore from backup" interrupted the syncing process for my music because now, some of the songs are greyed out on iTunes, but they still show up on my iPhone. I'm happy the music still plays on my iPhone, but it bothers me that I can't get rid of the greyed out songs on iTunes.
Can someone please tell me how to fix the greyed out songs and how to stop my phone from syncing and canceling?
    P.S.
My iPhone would sync and then cancel every time I plug in my iPhone into my computer, but I stopped that by going on iTunes to "Edit", "Preferences", "Devices", and then checkmarking the box that says "Prevent iPods, iPhones, iPads from syncing automatically."
I hope all of this makes sense >.< I feel like I should be jumping up and down in joy for getting an upgrade, but I'm bummed out now that this has to happen :/

I'm sorry I don't have a solution to post, but just want to say that I too (and I'm sure, among millions of others)  have experienced nothing but frustration and anger at all the ridiculous bugs that have happened seemingly without any interference from the user's end.
I can't even begin to list all the problems I've had since being forced to upgrade to iOS 7 on my iPhone(s) and iPad(s) being a family of Apple users. The OS "Music" app is completely useless now (half of my 1,200 songs are "greyed out" and unplayable), iTunes doesn't sync properly (it absonlutely refuses to transfer songs no matter how many options and selections in the various panes are checked off) and everything is INCREDIBLY slow.
I've read SO many possible solutions and fixes and, really, I don't have the TIME to be reading endless posts and screwing around "experimenting" trying to get it fixed. And Apple, as usual, is mum and nowhere to be found.
My advice to tech companies is to LEAVE THINGS BE -- especially if there is no real improvement. Unless the change significantly improves the functionality—changing the interface, buttons, or even the icons JUST BECAUSE is stupid policy and infuriates those of us whose lives don't live and breathe Apple...and just want a functioning phone.

  • Problems opening and saving PNG over network with CS2 and CS3

    using os10.4.11
    photoshop CS2 or CS3
I've recently tried to save images in PNG format,  small (no more than a couple hundred kilobytes) and found that whenever I tried to save to the server it would hang photoshop and require a force-quit. Saving the same file to the desktop works fine. Copying said file to the network and then trying to open that PNG from the server results in a photoshop hang, while opening that same file from the desktop works fine. I know all about the fact that Adobe doesn't support working over a server, but that's never been an issue at my workplace in all the years I've worked with (never had problems saving/opening any format, no corrupted files ever). If I try to open that same PNG from the server with CS2, same result. If I try to open it over the server using Photoshop CS, or version 7, however, it opens just fine. If I copy the Photoshop CS version of the PNG plugin and replace the PNG plugin installed with CS3 by default, then it seems to work and I can now open and save PNGs anywhere with no problems. Has anyone else had this problem? I can see that the file size of the PNG plugin has changed version to version, so something about it has changed. It seems as though there is something defective about the ones installed with CS2/3, and just copying the CS version into my CS3 folder clears up the problem.
Also, the problem is not limited to my computer. Other macs that try to open PNG files from the server using CS3 or 2 also hang.

Yes, we're a prepress company moving around probably a few dozen gb of data per day, saving PSD, TIFF, EPS, JPEG, all kinds of formats. It's the first time I've had a client requesting PNG files, and so the issue has come to light. This is the first time I've ever seen any kind of issue opening/saving across our network in 8 years. (the only time I've ever seen a corrupt file was a 1.6gb image that didn't copy correctly, and that wasn't a photoshop-related corruption, but an OS drag/copy of the file)
I'm not sure if I'll be able to find someone with OS 10.5 or some other version to see if they cause problems. If anyone else reading this who works over a network can test a PNG open/save over their network and list their OS and Photoshop version it may help. I'm going to see if I can find some other computers to try it out on in the meantime and mention it to IT.

  • Aperture and Canon 5D mark II import problem: copyright and author metadata

After importing RAW images to Aperture, I missing my name and copyright info in metadata, everything els is there; lens, focal length, shutter sped... I try several methods from camera direct, from memory card, using EOS software to HD and to Aperture. Nothing works. Did anybody have same problem?

    Ah. I didn't know that.
This type of information is defined typically in IPTC, not EXIF. Aperture probably ignores those EXIF fields; in general if it gets EXIF data it doesn't understand, I think it ignores it.
As to your other comment about making this data unmodifiable -- it's not really possible to make it immutable. EXIF in general is a lot harder to modify than IPTC, but unless the file is encrypted and self-checksumming, a person with a sector editor (or an application designed to change EXIF) will get around this.
I don't think there's yet a standard way to really "protect" full-sized image files, at least for JPEG or TIFF files.

  • A few minor, but irritating AppleTV problems - syncing and streaming

Unlike most of the people who've posted in this formum, I really, really like my AppleTV and use it everyday - for playing music as well as for video. I've synced my music, but I stream video, which works as advertised. I do have two small, annoying problems though.
    (1) Last week, due to an issue between the Garageband 4.1.1 update and iTunes, I needed to trash both the iTunes cache and the preferences files. Unfortunately, I needed to then resync my AppleTV. No big deal except that some TV series that I had encoded via Handbrake now only show up under the heading "various," rather than the name of the show itself. Additionally, a few episodes do not display updated artwork on the AppleTV list. No matter how I edit the tag information in iTunes, these shows still do not display properly in my AppleTV.
    (2) The second problem predates the issue above. I only want to sync certain photo albums from iPhoto, but these (and other newly created albums) do no show up in the list of iPhoto albums in iTunes. I've restarted both programs, rebooted my Mac, etc., but I can't seem to get the new iPhoto albums to appear in the Photos pane in iTunes>>AppleTV.
Help with both these issues will be appreciated.

I've had similar issues although it was a long time ago and my content is streamed as opposed to sync.
I'm struggling to remember the causes of my issues and how they were resolved. It occurs to me that perhaps if it isn't a result of a field somewhere being empty that it might be as a result of a field containing an illegal character or even a field somewhere that should be blank having something in it.
Another thing I noticed which might not apply to you since you are syncing but if I add content from a new show (ie a show that I haven't added before - not a new episode) it will show up in shows by date but not in shows by show until I have logged out of the library and back in again. Once I have a show added and listed on the tv I can add a second or subsequent episode and it will show up straight away. It's almost as though the tv only reads the 'show' field when it first connects. As I say this might be nothing to do with your situation, but might be worth closing itunes and re-opening it.

  • How can I return my Curve, too many problems syncing and died on me with the last updates. no more patience, Canada Bell

By the way your link for warranty do not work on your website....???
Should I return it to Bell for General Failure ?

Unfortunately, I'm in the same club, and also seeking a solution to the problem. I have approx 8000 songs and my ipod is a 3 mo. old 80 GB. I think I'm stuck working this out with Apple directly, which I'm dreading..and I'll be damned if I'm paying shipping charges for an IPOD that BEST BUY can't exchange beyond the 30 days post purchase, and can't do any more due to Apple's mandated service process. If a prompt resoluiotion with no further cost me is unavailable, I'd sooner throw the Ipod in the garbage, cancel my plans to by the Iphone, and live my life Apple free. Steven Jobs may know innovation and technology, but his knowledge of customer service could be his undoing one day.

  • Problems acquiring and saving multiple camera images using a switch with GigE cameras

    Hi Folks,
We are having an issue with connecting 6 GigE cameras via an Ethernet switch. We can acquire and store individual cameras but once we increase the number of cameras we end up with jumpy avi files.
Each camera has been physically labelled and attached to the switch, so camera 1 is attached to port 1, which then corresponds to Cam1 in MAX. When recording multiple files what appears to happen is that the avi file from cam1 actually has images from multiple cameras, as if cam1 is being renamed/allocated on each frmae and each time a different camera is allocated. How can we fix this?
We are new to this so any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Cathy

I think your problem is caused by using the same image name on each instance of Imaq create. "Grab and Save to AVI Acq" being the string you are using. I am pretty sure If you make each image name unique you wont get image referance problems.

  • Problem opening and saving files, new eps default

I expect that these two issues are related, but in a way that I don't understand.
    (1) When I go to open files, raw or jpeg, I now need to enter a value for 'enable' on the open dialog.  That never was necessary before.
    (2) When I go to save as jpeg, the file type defaults to eps.  And even when I change to jpg, I get a dialog about eps options.
I don't understand this at all!  I've never used eps, don't even know why I would.
The only way I found to get around this was to convert my files to 16 bit.  That certainly shouldn't be necessary.
(I'm using Photoshop CS6 on a Mac running Mountain Lion)

    (1) When I go to open files, raw or jpeg, I now need to enter a value for 'enable' on the open dialog.  That never was necessary before.
Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels/Dialogs visible?
    (2) When I go to save as jpeg, the file type defaults to eps.
So you select jpg from the dropdown list and it switches to eps?

  • Problems loading and saving pdf files from sites with latest version.

On my utilities I wish to download and save pdf files of my e-bill.
Lately when I click on getting bill, Firefox opens new tab and stops.
with a light message in url place saying "Type a web address".
To get around this I must do a right click on the save bill and
select open in new window, then it opens a new copy of Firefox,
and two tabs, with the second one asking me to use Adobe to see
pdf file. I tell it to open and then save it and print it from the tab
that opens with the pdf file in it. This never happened before was
always able to just click on link and it would open new tab with
    pdf file there.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I was clear enough with my question.
What I want to be able to do is to click on a PDF file in my Firefox browser and be able to save it as an Adobe PDF file, not a Preview PDF file, in any folder on my computer, rather than just the specified default location for downloads. This way I can save, for example, phone bills in the phone bills folder and bank statements in the bank statements folder without having to save them to the desktop, "Get Info" on each, and change the "Open with:" box from Preview to Adobe Reader.
Fortunately, thanks to Michael's post, I found an add-on from Firefox that allows me to do just that: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636
Thanks for your help. Now, within my Firefox browser, I can choose whether to view or download PDF files, always in Adobe rather than Preview, and when I save them I get the option to choose the location each and every time.

I have a problem! I was using my iPhone without sync. Then I format my pc again and I was syncing with it and I got distracted and clicked on something and after even if a click sync, change anything and applying and erasing the historical syncronization under preferences it doesn't work... On sync it keeps deleting my apps from my iPhone instead saving it! If I change anything and click applying show a message ask if I want to delete those apps which I have on my iPhone then if I click continue it will be deleted it and if a press cancel do not do nothing neither sync.
I tried to unistall and install more than 2 times and repeat the steps for sync and don't change!

    Thank you!
My itunes it's the last 10.2.2 and my iPhone 4 is bb 02.10.04 and running at 4.1 which I don't want to update to don't suffer more errors like people said they do.

    Hi,
This should only occur if this is a NEW computer or your first sync and you have information from another computer.
Has this iPhone been synced with another computer before?
    Transferring Purchases; http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
If you follow that link your Apps WILL be on your computer and any music you have brought......
Now, do not worry, even if you do accidentally delete your apps, you can download them again for free with your itunes store account, just keep in mind you will lose any saved data!
Follow this and hit continue, the only information that could get lost is any content (music, videos etc) synced from ANOTHER computer that WAS NOT brought from your account.
Hope this helps and makes sense....
