Problems to open folder after backup
Dears,
One of my old macbook A1181 OS (10.6) crashed and I desided to backup a document files from HDD by plug-in to the External HDD device and coping into iMac (OS 10.9). After transfer of files I can not see a content of main folder. The amount of folder is the same as it was in Macbook.
Is it possible that after transfer of folder they became a "hidden" files?

I presume that you didn't use the Time Machine, right? The method you used was a direct copy to an external HDD, there are some issues you may encounter which will mainly depends on the format of your HDD (suggest that the best format if it's a direct copy is MacOS Journaled).

Can't open folder after failed copy
Hello,
I have a WD MyBookLive NAS drive which, up until Mavericks, I had been succesfully using as a Time Machine backup over WiFi. However after Mavericks it became unusable (This is well documented throughout this site and in other places - however there is no fix in sight).
Having given up on Time Machine for backup (and deleting it's backup archives in a failed attempt at troubleshooting) I went about manually copying my files to a share I had created specifically for this purpose on the NAS drive.
I did a test of about 5 Gb worth of files and all went OK, copying in about 5 minutes.
I then started to copy the rest of my data - about 750 Gb in all, mostly raw video and iMovie files. The copy began and proceeded as expected so I left it alone, However when I looked at it a few hours later it said that a copy had failed because the file "clip-135-02-05 05;27;15.dv" couldn't be read or written, with no option to either try again or skip over the offending file - it simply stopped the copy dead... Grrrr
When I checked the destination folder (after having to re-log in to it) with a Get Info it was 134Gb - so a lot of progress had been made in the copy.
HOWEVER, although I could do a "Get Info" on the destination folder, its icon is greyed out and I cannot open it. Worse yet I cannot delete it. When I tried to do so it deleted about 2/3rds of the content but stopped saying "The operation can’t be completed because the item “clip-135-02-05 05;27;15.dv” is in use."
I tried using "GraveYard" to delete it but it couldn't do it.
I'm now left with a 45Gb greyed out folder that I cannot open or delete...
Any Ideas??
Also, when I searched for "clip-135-02-05 05;27;15.dv" in the source folder, it came back with about 12 files - all seemingly legit, but in different folders - so I've no easy way of knowing which one of these may be the problem file (maybe none of them are, maybe the WiFi failed at a critical point while copying that file and corrupted the destination).
Either way it seems odd that a failure of ONE file during a copy could cause so much trouble...

I was running 10.9.2 - in fact the reason I ended up with this manual copy problem was because I was hoping that 10.9.2 may have fixed the Time Machine problem I mentioned above, but it didn't!
Continuing from where I left off after the failure above...
I thought I'd skip WiFi and use a direct ethernet cable to my router for a more reliable connection. I hooked it up, disabled WiFi and began the copy again from the start. (Copy speed was pretty much the same as with WiFi - I guess this is as fast as my NAS can handle things). The time estimation got to 17 hrs so I left it overnight. The next day it was still going with no apparent problems.
It got to about 620Gb out of the roughly 750Gb BUT then stopped again. This time the error was different:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
...and again, frustratingly, no other option but to click "OK". Further, it gave no indication of the problematic file.
However, at least this time I could open and examine the contents of the destination folder to see what was and wasn't copied. By doing a few "Get Info"s on the various folders and comparing sizes and file counts I was eventually able to identify which files and folders didn't make it. (Oddly it was a selection from roughly the middle of the original folder list - sorted alphabetically, I thought it would have been at the end).
I started to copy the missing items, fully expecting to come across a permissions error at some point. However I didn't and was able to complete my "backup". When I compared "Get Info"s on the source and destination folders they showed the same number of items and roughly the same no of bytes - Good enough for me.
So, for now, my immeadiate problem of not being able to make a backup has gone away.
Nonetheless, my experience with this (and the well documented Time Machine problems) leaves me doubting OSx reliability (how can there be problems with permissions during one copy attempt but not the next?) and user friendliness. I'm not a Windows fan by any stretch, but at least when Windows has a problem copying it tells you which file it had the problem with and offers you to skip over it and continue with the copy. With OSx, it's all or nothing with no remedies and often no meaningful fault indication... Very frustrating...
One last thing: I had mentioned in my first post that I had been left with a Greyed out image of a 45Gb folder that wouldn't delete. I tried again today and, although it was still grey, it did actually delete - so at least that somehow fixed itself...

Problem with Time Capsule after backup session
I have a problem with Time Capsule after a backup session. Our two Macs (on Maverick) loose connection with the station and the only thing that seems to help is unplugging the Time Capsule and starting it again! After the next backup session the same thing happens again. The Macs seem not to be able to hold on to the connection and continually loose it. The iPhones and iPads that we have (4 units) are not affected - it is the Mac Mini and Mac Powerbook that experiences this problem!
I would be grateful for your help!
ThorThis is standard Mac issues and has been a bug floating around since Lion.. it hits some people worse than others.. but once it starts it is awful hard to get rid of.
Just to confirm the connection to internet is not a problem?? Just the hard disk drops out?
I recommend you
1. Reset the TC to factory.. and start over with all new names.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.
TC name and wireless name/s should conform. By default the disk share name is data which is fine.
2. Mavericks has changed over from using AFP to SMB for network filesharing.. why Apple why??
This is unhelpful to say the least. Many many people are struggling with TC and being unable to mount the network drive.
So do it manually and force it back to AFP.
In Finder use top menu, Go, Connect to Server.
Type AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress (it must be the network name of actual TC.. or its IP address)
When the computer locates the resource it will ask for a password.. it is public by default.. supply your password or public and save it in the keychain.
3. Delete the existing TM setup and start over.. See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
I cannot promise this will fix it but should reduce the problem to now and then.. rather than every time TM needs to backup. -
Problem with opening mail after nstalling OS 10.6.6
On the application directory I only see "mail.app (original)". Clicking here will give the same error message. On spotlight I don't see any other mail.app. Thanks

Hmm, you're right... wonder when that changed. It's probably a good idea to prevent you from renaming apps, except that your Mail app has the wrong name.
Try this... open the Terminal (in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder) and paste in the following command:
sudo mv /Applications/"Mail (original).app" /Applications/Mail.app
Then press return. You will be prompted for your password, and when you type it nothing will show up. Press return again after typing it.
If that doesn't work, you can use [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com> to reinstall the original Mail application from your Mac OS X install disk.
Either way, after getting some version of Mail with a correct name installed, run the combo updater again to bring that copy of Mail up to the current version. -
Windows 8.1 desktop hangs after opening folder after boot
Having read all the articles on fixing context menus I cannot find a solution for the exact issue I am seeing.
When I boot my PC I can right click and select 'open' on my PC. I can then quite happily bring up the context menu on any folder on my drive.
However for a period of around 10-15 seconds I an unable to select anything displayed on my desktop. After which period everything works fine until the next reboot.
My PC is a Lenovo T440s that was shipped with windows 8 and has been upgraded to windows 8.1.
I have tried disabling all non-Microsoft extensions using shexview and has tried safe mode but the problem still exAlso check 'Windows Event Viewer'.
To do this, right-click the start orb and select 'Windows Event Viewer'. Check the 'Application' and 'System' logs for anything out of the ordinary around the time you right-clicked your desktop.
Have you installed the Windows 8.1 drivers for your T440s after the upgrade was done?
Did it work correctly in Windows 8? Perhaps you might want to rollback or reset to factory and perform the update again. And then install your favorite software afterwards when the upgrade has successfully completed.
Some third-party software may stop working correctly when upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, and may be causing this issue.

How did you install the update - via website? If so, you can always uncheck any optional software
Either way, Chrome behaves very badly - especially when uninstalled. Try setting your usual browser as the default browser, and Outlook, Word, etc. should open links normally after that.
P.S. I do not endorse Adobe's policy to push optional software with their free products, but there is nothing we can do about that. However, Adobe would not go as far as pushing spyware (Ask toolbar); most likely it was the harmless Google toolbar. -
after backup, TM cannot eject itself automatically, and then both my mac and TM get high temperature. why is that, I had the same problem twice. I re-start my mac, it doesn't work at tall, still the same problem.
Are you saying, right now that the TM refuses to work even after a re-boot?

I posted on here about this a few weeks back and someone suggested force-closing Pages -- and that does indeed enable me to open things -- but I have had to force-close many times in the last 24 hours, which is worrying. Are there any other suggestions?
I am sometimes also finding that, when I have been writing something and then click on "documents" the screen goes blank, there is a wait of around a minute and then the same document is re-displayed, before clicking "documents" again lets me look at other documents -- which is a pain if I am trying to move between documents repeatedly. Again, words of wisdom on this would be great.
Pages under iOS6 opened quickly, and there was an immediate loss of performance when I upgraded. I am finding this very frustrating because I don't feel that the new Pages has added to the facilities I was using, but a slowness to open documents is frustrating.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Can't open iphoto after complete reboot.

My computer stoped working a while back and I had the harddrive replaced, now I can't open iphoto after importing it from time mashine. I still have the same OS X (10.6.8) on a Mac Book pro from 2009. I can't buy the new one, or update it, because my OS X is too old and after seeing all the problems with the new system I don't really want to install it. How do I make iphoto work again? When I try to open it, it just says it can't open because of a problem (no, really?).Is there a crash report? Have you tried reinstalling it?
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
