Problems trying to erase and reinstall iBook G4 to factory settings

I am trying to reinstall the factory settings on my iBook G4 so that I can pass the computer on to my parents. I tried installing from my two install disks, using the "erase and install" option. Disk 1 worked fine, everything proceeded normally, and then the computer asked me to insert Disk 2. From that point on, the thing seems to be caught in some loop. I get the "preparing installation" message, and then it starts to install, but then suddenly the screen goes to blue, and then it comes back on as the beginning of the "preparing installation" progress bar again. It does this on a continues loop. When I opened the Installer log, the errors I see say "can't instantiate package" for keynote 2, iWork Font, iWork Extras, and GarageBand.
At some point after it goes through this loop, it gives up, tells me there were errors and to reinstall OS X. It ejects the disk, and then prompts me to reinsert the Disk 2 again. When I do, the whole thing starts all over again. Please help! I don't know what else to do.

You may have to use the Disk Utility (on booted installer disc) to see
if it can 'repair disk' and also consider checking the optional tools it
has, to use the one that over-writes the hard disk drive with random
zeros; and then reformat it to HFS+ since it could have a problem.
When you do get a system installed, be sure to run 'repair disk
permissions' from the new system's Disk Utility.
In fact, to start up in SafeBoot and then run DU's repair disk permis-
sions can be helpful; prior to any updates or upgrades.
{Another way to remove user files could have been to use a different
plan and remove the user account, replacing the admin/owner one
with another new admin user account. There is a way, and it likely is
in the Apple Support knowledgebase. The topic gets revisited here.}
If Disk Utility - on OS X installer - finds a problem it can't fix, before
trying a reinstall from the booted installer disc, you may have to see
about getting a third party disk utility compatible with the OS X you
are trying to install and use that to repair the computer's hard drive.
DiskWarrior is among the popular; but note this isn't a one does all,
it may be enough to fix the hard disk drive's issue or see if it is OK;
though there are other third party disk utilities which fix other stuff.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Trying to Erase and Reinstall Yosemite from install drive

I am trying to prepare my 2009 Mac Pro for selling. I erased the startup disk from disk utility, and now I'm trying to reinstall Yosemite using an install file on an external hard drive. Every time I boot to the external hard drive, choose "Install OS X" from the utilities menu, and then wait for the "Preparing to install" screen. After preparing to install, however, I get the error message:
"An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again."
I had a working Yosemite install on this machine before erasing the disk, so I know it can handle it. The external hard drive is a LaCie Rugged connected via Firewire 800 (I also tried via USB). My Mac Pro also has two additional 1TB drives in bays 2 and 3 (both erased and empty).

  • Trying to erase and reinstall Lion without Apple ID

A while back I bought a MacBook Pro from a friend. It came with a Lion Installation Disk.
I've tried erasing the harddrive, and reinstalling Lion, but now im being prompted to enter the Apple ID that purchased Lion.
Since my friend bought the computer along with Lion using his Apple ID, how do I reset and install Lion without having to enter his Apple ID?
    Any help is appreciated.

The important question is, did this machine come with lion preinstalled or was it purchased from the app store?
If it came preinstalled, your friend needs to call apple to transfer the license for the OS to you. If he purchased Lion, the license is not transferable and you will need the original install disks, wipe the drive, install the original OS, and then purchase Lion with your own Apple ID.
FWIW, Lion did not come on a disk.

  • Imac problems, need to erase and reinstall I think??

I have been having problems with my Imac. it is a 24" with I believe a 2.8ghz drive and so on. Anyways when I turn it on it goes to the white screen with the apple and the little moving circle thing. It does this for a while then shuts off. I have my time machine backups on an external drive so no worries there. I had this trouble before and we did a software update and it worked for about 3 weeks then doing it again. I was told if it did it again I need to erase the HD and reinstall OSX from the start but not sure exactly how to do it where i cant get to the main screen or even login screen. Please help.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'd first try booting into "Safe Boot Mode":
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
If that doesn't help, try "single user mode":
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
If neither of these things improves the condition of your Mac, check back for more information.

  • Problems trying to erase and install osx mavericks

    Hi all,
so ive just bought an imac off my parents and have tried to do erase system, I have erased the macintosh hd as i am supposed but when it comes to re-installing the os x and I sign into the app store to start downloading i get an error saying this request is temporarily unavailable please try again later? but it has been 3 days now and still the same message, I have contacted apple but they want to charge me £25 to walk me through the process, Can anyone please hwlp shed some light on what I am doing wrong? thankyou very much in advance.

Unless you purchased Mavericks before it's no longer available. If your iMac is a 2011 model with installer discs:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If your iMac did not come with installer discs (I don't mean you lost them:)
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Trying to erase and reinstall, but I can't. Help!

The last time I installed an OS upgrade, it asked if I wanted to transfer files from an older computer. I did and it pulled everything over perfectly.
I'd like to do that again. I purchased a new imac and went to install Snow Leopard with the expectation that it would ask me if I wanted to transfer over files from another computer, however it never asked me that. I was able to upgrade my OS on the new imac, but I'm trying to figure out how to seamlessly transfer all my files over from the older imac.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry, but that's like buying an auto without its jack and spare tire, and something no one should ever accept, especially from an Apple retailer. Go back to Best Buy and see if they can rectify the issue. Otherwise, call AppleCare and order replacement disks: requires the serial number and a token S&H charge (should be in the neighborhood of $20-30) and also get the manuals, if they weren't included. Yes, you need the restore disks because they include the Apple Hardware Test suite and the other Apple apps that came with the machine, most likely the iLife ones. Check your machine at the Apple Store at http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/imac?mco=Nzk2MDUyNw to see what software came with it.

  • How can I perform a clean erase and reinstall on my iBook G4?

    Hi everyone,
I have misplaced a help article that I successfully used to perform a clean erase and reinstall on my iBook G4.
I've been trying to get the erase and reinstall started by inserting the software restore cd (disk 1 of 8) that came with my computer, but the cd doesn't give the option to erase and restore.
When I try holding down "c" after restarting (right before I hear the dong sound), it just boots like it normally does and I still don't get the option to erase and install.
    Can someone help?
    Thanks so much,
    Allison

I don't know fiberoptix. The above poster mentioning 8 disks would be talking about Panther, whereas in your case I am not sure what the second tiger DVD has on it.
I suggest you post a new topic in the Tiger forum here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=752
as you will get a better response if it is a new topic, and the Tiger forum has a big audience and your question will get more attention.
    Good luck.

  • Having problems erasing and reinstalling Mac os x on 2007 MBP 15in

    Hello
I am having some problems here and was hoping for some help.
Just recently here, I decided to erase and reinstall Mac Os X on my sister's 2007 MBP. She just recently got a new 15in MBP and wanted most of her content on the 2007 to be erased. Well... I did some reading around and found that the easiest way to do so was with the os X DVD that came with the thing. Problem is....I can't seem to find it for the 2007 MBP. So I decided to try the 2010 version. Went into the disk, ran disk utility, wiping the hard drive, did all the right steps according to Apple, and then rebooted to try get a clean version of OS X on. Well, problem is, it would come to the language select screen, but after that selection, it would come up with this error:
"Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer
If you want to restore your system from a Time Machine backup, click "Restore from Backup"
I've tried reformatting the HD several times and even tried restoring, but it wouldn't display my system restores...
So my quesiton is, is it becuase I have the wrong DVD that its not working or is there something else I"m missing?
Any help would be vastly appreacited (especially since its not my computer!)
    Thanks!
    Jordon Spronk

The install disks that come with a model of a Mac have certain hardware drivers for the computer and video card, you can't use another Mac's install disk.
However you can use the $29 Snow Leopard install disk, but it doesn't come with iLife, that's extra.

Does the regular Firefox 8 release version work or does the version crash as well?
    *Firefox 8.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

I updated to 8.1.3 and my rear camera will not focus.   I erased and reinstalled and still have the problem.  Any advice?

    Hello jonesrob,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I see that your photos and video taken with the rear camera on your iPhone are not in focus after updating to iOS 8.1.3.  When you restored your iPhone, did you restore from a backup?  If so then I would like you to please restore to the factory settings by following the directions in the article below.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
If you had already restored to the factory settings and the issue persists, then it's time to seek service for your iPhone.

You can disable autoupdate by following these steps:
Go to main menu > Tools > Options > click on Advanced tab > click on Update tab and then click on the round radio button that says ''Never check for updates (not recommended: security risk)''

  • Erase and Reinstall - Could not unmount disk?

    Hi there....
I'm running an iBook G4 with Tiger 10.4.11
After a freeze and manual power off, I powered up and got stuck at the grey Apple. Tried to start in safe mode - no luck. Started up off the install disk and ran Disk Utility - tells me Disk Could Not Unmount.
Spoke with Apple rep. - ran fsck in Single User Mode - got "Invalid Node STructure"
I've accepted that my files are lost - I have a good backup so that's that.
STarted up and got to Disk Utility again - want to do an Erase and Reinstall. Go to erase HD and am told "Could Not Unmount Disk"
    ....do I have any options??

Well, take into account I'm at a distance here & just guessing it's the HD, but yes, if it is that & you get it replaced, you should be able to install OSX just fine... and likely be much faster with a new HD in it.
    Here's some hard drives...

    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Powerbook-iBook-Macbook-Hard-Drive-Upgrades-Pro-Po werbook--iBook-Hard-Drives-p-1-c-517.html
Ultimately - should I be purchasing a new HD and putting it into this G4 - or look in to buying a new one altogether? ...I'd really rather not right now.
Depends what you do with it & such, but if it meets your needs it may pay to have it fixed, but checkout the prices at the Apple Store on refurb MacBooks & MacBook Pros to better gauge for yourself.

  • How do I reinstall backed up user folder after erase and reinstall of 10.4?

I had to erase and reinstall 10.4 on my g4 ibook. Prior to this I backed up my user folder on an external drive. Is there and easy way to get my machine the same as it was before the OS reinstall - library settings, files etc?

Is it assumed that apple users should have another apple machine and or a spare unused firewire hard-drive for system maintenance?!? Sure, if I were running it for buisness use, I'd have a mirrored drive, break the mirror, and upgrade one half of it, but this is the machine in my bedroom! I've got to say, I've rapidly going back of apple over these update QA issues. The fixes offered by people (and I appreciate the time and effort they put in to help others) so far all seem to involve creating other systems on spare drives, or using target mode from another mac. Come on Apple! You can't seriously expect your home users to have two machines, or a spare drive (personally, any drive I have, I use in something or other! I'd consider it a waste having a drive spare just for system upgrades to my Mac). It's about time Apple posted on this subject. It's unfair to expect your userbase to support your COMERCIAL OS for free so heavily.
I bought a mini because it was cheap, and I wanted to play with OSX. I bought the next OSX release because I had grown to like OSX. Now I'm rapidly going off it. I don't want to have to buy another device just to make it safe to upgrade.
Sorry for the Rant. Simon, this isn't meant as a criticism of your response. I just feel that apple should be more proactive here, having another disk is of course a good way to go, however, it takes the old TCO a bit to high for a home/play machine imho.
Anyone from Apple care to comment? (or will you simply edit out my post... afterall that would be easier than addressing the problem).
