Problems turning Filevault off

Hi all,
I've been having problems to turn filevault off. It keeps asking me for 4060 Gb of disk space!!! I've never heard of a Powerbook with a 4Tb+ hard disk...
Any solutions?
Thanks,
Leonardo

Leonardo,
The bogus message is a bug, but the fact is that you do not have enough space on your Hard Drive to turn off Filevault is valid. Mac Help says: Before you begin, make sure you have enough empty space on the disk that contains your home folder. You need as least as much space as your home folder takes up. For example, if your home folder is 20 MB, make sure you have at least 20 MB of free space available. This space is needed temporarily during this process.Read Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk, by Dr. Smoke for some hints to increase the available disk space.

  • I need to turn fileVault off, and don't have the space

    I am so
    upset now,
I freeed up a ton of space on my hard drive,
before installing/ turning on the FileVault,
and I asking an senior advisor,
would turning on File Vault take up an of my GB space, and she said no,
and I turned it on, it took 2.5 hours to do,
    and when it got done,
I Can't it turned off becasue it's now telling me that I don't have enough GB space to turn it off,
    and I don't enough space,
I need 134 GB of space do this task,
I have taken it to the Apple Store at the Mall here in Atlanta,
and no one were able to get it.
    I'm so frustrated,
how can I force this thing off, and give me back my space,
and I don't have an external hard drive,
why did this happend aftern being told one thing by the senior advisor.
    OMG.
    I HATe this File Vault.

    Yes yes indeed,
    OMG,
    I finally got it off,
    I called IT Support
and this guy saw where it had doubled the size during the encryption, and showed me how to go in and delete,
and I was able to finally turn it off,
although it took 3 hours to do so.
    but worth it.
so never will I again listen to anyone about that,
I'm done with the encryption of my machine.
I wasted a trip going to the Apple Store,
    thank you.

  • Filevault problems turning it off?

I am about to switch to ML, and need to rethink my security setup.
I heard that if you turn FV on and later of again that it would create  problems (I heard this about 10.5).
    Anybody any experience with it?

I was emailing with someone in Chile who said it might not be solved, that is why I asked here.  anybody heard anything?

  • Re: Why can't I turn Filevault off ?

I had major problems trying to remove 'Vilefault', getting the same error. After much work I traced it back to a corrupt file.
The file could not be deleted, copied or opened and no amount of hacking made any difference (command line rm/cp/mv as root made no impact, the file would reappear instantly). It was a damaged settings file for Parallels Desktop that was probably the reason my XP instance completely melted.
I also tried the vfcrack process at http://crypto.nsa.org/vilefault/23C3-VileFault.pdf but it looked like the corrupt file stopped that too.
Apple Support were useless inasmuch as this was off-script for them and could only suggest a total wipe & re-install. As far as they are concerned, if you've tried a root-user delete then you no further options.
My final resort was to move as much as possible out of my (filevaulted) home directory and into an open file structure at the top level of the hard drive. Even a move to a new user account would still leave me with the blocked out filevault area on the disk so, eventually, I will need to hose & rebuild if it bugs me too much.

Backup your user folder to another HD or computer. Your profile indicates that you have a few options, then Erase & Install, using the same username/password combo as the one you backed up, go through the setup, and copy the backed up data to your desktop folder and replace the new items with the saved ones. Once you're up and running, review the results you get from searching these forums for filevault and file vault and rethink how you're using it.

  • "There was a problem enabling FileVault." Error Message.

After several attempt trying to enable the filevault on the newly fresh nstalled Mac OS X Mountain Lion, the same error messages appears:
There was a problem enabling FileVault.
Problems were encountered with the disk “Mac HD”. Please turn off FileVault, verify and (if necessary) repair the disk with Disk Utility, and try enabling FileVault again.
Each time I've done the followings:
    1. I've turned FileVault off.
    2. I've erased all partitioned on my hard disk drive, using the USB disk containing the installation files of Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
    3. I've created a single Mac OS X Journaled, non-Encrypted partition using the disk utility and instaled the OS on it.
    4. I've followed the initial proccess of the newly installed OS by entering the WiFi credentials, AppleID and password and ...
    5. I've restarted the system after first boot.
    6. I've just enabled the FileVault after logging in without running any application or plugging any device or even using the system for about 6 hours!
But every time the same error occoured.

  • HT1338 when updating OS X on brand new mac book pro 13 Retina, all it does is wait for several hours and I can not turn it off

Brand new and update showed up for the OS X.  sected update and all it does is say wait for hours.  It will not let me turn off the mac because the application loader keeps cancelling the request to either turn off or restart.  Help

    Hi again,
I have lost count of the number of posts here, in addition to my direct experience with my clients, where FileVault is discovered to be the main cause of whatever symptoms are being experienced. I refuse to turn it on on any of my systems and will always, always advise against turning it on to anyone who asks me.
I would recommend that you initially back up all your data to external media (either external hd or DVD-R) and then attempt to turn off FileVault. I purposely used the word attempt because, more often than not, even this can cause issues. If you are unable to turn FileVault off, indeed even if successful, I would recommend that you carry out an Erase and Install using your MacBook Pro's system disks.
In short, my message is ---- stay away from FileVault.
If you require to protect your files then the best way to achieve this is via Disk Utility and creating an encryted image. More details here:

  • Can´t turn it off !! 60GB 5G

    Hi!
I cannot turn the iPod off after disconnecting it from the Apple HiFi equipment. No problems turning it off (with the remote control) while connected to the HiFi.
    Any suggestions?

Are you making sure that the hold is off and that you are holding down the play/pause button for at least 3 seconds?

  • Problem turning off legacy filevault.

    Hey everyone,
I began the process of switching over to the new filevault, but have encountered a problem turning off the legacy vault. Everything seemed to be goin well, at first. It took about 30 minutes for copying to complete during decryption. However, it has been hung up at "copying is complete..." for nearly 12 hours now and is showing no signs of moving on. I have received no errors. What can I do to maybe kick start the process again or should I just do a forced shutdown. Any help here would be greatly appreciated because at this point I honestly don't know if I have any other option than a forced shutdown.
    Thanks

Ok, so I'm answering my own question here but it worked. I ended up doing a forced shutdown (holding down the power button until shut down initializes) from the screen indicating that "copying is complete..." When I restarted (manual restart using the power button again) the legacy vault was off and the new file vault was on and working properly. No data or settings were lost and everything was working properly.
Thank you to all of you who took the time to look at my initial question even if you didn't have an answer for it.

  • Problems with FileVault, wont turn off:/

Some time ago I turnd FileVault on to see what it was. But as I now know I dont need it, its youst a pain. And also, its very hard to turn off. If I say "Turn of filevault", I get the message that it needs 4.8 tb to turn it off. And, suprise!! I dont have 4tb:P
Is it any way for me to turn it off? Or do I have to take backup of my stuff and reformat? When I install leopard, can I youst take a clean install, and the harddrive will be reformated in the instalation process?
    Thank You

    Hi HunterK,
Do you have the administrative password? How big is your home folder? Whatever the size of your home folder is, you need to have to have the same amount of free space on your hard drive. Lets say your home folder is 1Gb, then you need at least 1Gb of free space on your hard drive. Try going to System Preferences > Security > Turn off FileVault > Enter the login password > click Continue > You should see a message come up, click Turn off FileVault. Do you have the "master password"?

I Have a MacBook Pro i7 2011 it stays on for about 4 hours then the screen go's all fuzzy and I have to turn it off by the power button has any body else had this problem thanks mike

My guess would also be a failling connection between your logicboard and your GPU. See 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card
For most users it starts with some random crashes and freezes like you describe it. And then it just gets worse and worse. There are still no "good" solutions, sadly. This is a hardware problem from the production.

I am experiencing some major problems with my MacBook Pro. I have had some issues with it turning on/off at random times, but today, when starting, I get the grey start-up screen and a recovery bar. After filling in approx 1/4 of the way, the machine dies. After starting it in recovery mode, it will not allow me to download OS X Mavericks- it says the disk is locked. Any ideas? I do not have a back-up and do not want to erase everything before I have explored my options. Help?

try forcing internet recover, hold 3 keys - command, option, r - you should see a spinning globe
most people will tell you to do both pram and smc resets (google) and if you still have issues, either clean install (easy) or troubleshoot (hard)
