Problems: undoes sleep, and won't give up

Folks:
A few days ago, I connected a new Seagate 1.5TB drive (USB2), accepted an offer to format the drive, and enabled TM. (Or was it vice-versa? I don't recall.)
First Problem: Something undoes sleep
Since then, when I use Apple Menu "Sleep" the system goes to sleep, and that wakes up a few seconds later. Always. This cannot be good for the system, and it isn't good for my electricity bill.
Is this waking due to enabling TM and/or attaching the Seagate drive? It seems likely, as it started happen just after I enabled TM, and I am certain I have done nothing else to the system that should affect sleep. About "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver Control Panel: I routinely leave this ENABLED. I've tried both settings since I enabled TM. No difference.
I routinely leave the Energy Saver "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for" setting to 15 or so minutes. Since the computer was not been asleep any morning when I start work since I enabled TM, I assume this route to sleep also fails.
Q1: How to restore sound sleep on my system?
Second issue: Won't give up.
At the moment, the TM monitor icon at the upper right of my screen is circling. It's been circling for at least 15 minutes. Before that I noticed that TM had started a backup. I checked: it was going to back up only 552 KB, which seemed reasonable -- I haven't been doing very much so far this morning. I checked minutes later. No sign of progress. I checked a few minutes later, no progress, so I clicked on the 'x' to abort the backup. Now the top entry on the TM monitor pulldown has been reading "Stopping Backup" for at least 5 minutes.
What to do? TM won't be able to do the next hourly backup if it's still trying to abort the previous one. I tried disabling TM in its Control Panel. It's now off, and yet both the Control Panel and monitor say it's back to trying to backup 552KB ... again.
I'll try dismounting and remounting the external drive. If that fails, I'll restart the system. But, of course, neither of these should be necessary.
BTW, strangely, the full TM menu says the last backup was at 3:10 AM, almost 7 hours ago. Since I didn't try to put the system to sleep last night at about 10pm, and it wasn't asleep when I arrived ... why 3:10? Maybe that's when the Unix cron-timed daily maintenance was done?
By the way, the USB drive IS alive and working. I opened it, found a random file from one of the backed-up folders, and copied it to my internal drive, no problem.
Q2: How to definitively abort a backup?
Q3: How to avoid hung backups in the future?
TIA,
Henry

Pondini:
Thanks for your response!
1. Exclude your TM disk from any anti-virus scanning.
None running.
2. Exclude it from Spotlight (System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy)
Done! The next hourly scan was running so I aborted it by unmounting and remounting the external disk. When I remounted, TM appeared to be in a consistent, "happy" state. So I chose "Back Up Now" and the backup ran without apparent problem.
So far, so good, Excluding seems to have helped. I'll post back if anything different happens at the next hourly backup, or overnight.
3. Until you resolve this, leave the Put the hard drive(s) to sleep . . .
option OFF.
I did that before my original post, and left it disabled.
My system still won't stay asleep for more than a few seconds.
How is your USB disk attached to your Mac (direct or via USB hub;
port on back or keyboard)?
Directly to the back of the machine. My Mac did not seem to like for it to be connected though my external hub -- it complained about not enough power and shut down the hub. That seems strange, because both the drive and the hub are powered separately by wall-warts. But that's not an issue now.
There may be some clues in your logs. Download the Time Machine Buddy widget
from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html.
I'll just use the standard log interface... It shows some nice messages for successful TM backups. Two messages seem to correlate with TM hangs. Here they are:
Indexing a file failed. Returned -1120 for: /private/tmp, /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Espresso/2009-04-28-041015.inProgress/02A5D71D-2086-47 E0-A006-3C8030F2CAD8/Espresso's HD/private/tmp
Indexing a file failed. Returned -1120 for: /Library/Caches, /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Espresso/2009-04-28-041015.inProgress/0B66D534-640A-4F 08-9ED4-CBB0F3872450/Espresso's HD/Library/Caches
I googled around about "Indexing a file failed" in connection with TM, but I didn't find anything that useful.
You did this via the Finder? For experimenting, that's ok, but normally to
restore a file/folder from your backups, use the TM interface Enter Time
Machine. Using the Finder can result in permissions problems with the copied
files. Also be very careful not to use the Finder to change, move, or delete
anything in those backups...
Thanks for the warning. I figured as much. I just located a small file on the TM disk and made a copy of it on my internal drive. Simply copying a file from the TM backup directories should not be a problem. If it is, that would indicate TM is a lot less stable than it should be.
By the way, my profile is wrong. I'm running 10.5.6, fully updated.
Thanks,
Henry

My Macbook pro, (late 2010) sometimes will sleep and won't wake up. then the sleep light flashes. What's the problem

Hi I've been following this thread (along with a different one on the same topic). I've been having the same problem with my ibook. I can add that I have no problem with startup. It's just that the screen "goes to sleep" unexpectedly and may operate normally for a few minutes or a few hours at most. Opening and closing the lid or restarting seems to cause it to awaken but then usually for just a few seconds or minutes. If it is connected to another video display that display continues functioning fine even though the computer screen is blank. In addition the desktop is there and visible faintly or if totally blank can be backlit through the apple logo and can be read. I've had my logic board replaced twice under the extended warranty and assumed it was that but now I'm thinking of the reed switch. Apple refuses to consider any further work under warranty as the last repair was in Jan, 06 and they claim only a 90 parts warranty and the machine is from 03. Any thoughts before I cut the wires? I have reset the pmu, run cocktail and disk utility. Other than the sleep issue the machine works fine. thanks Ronda or anyone else who has any ideas... Dave

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router

  • Screen goes to sleep and won't come back on - how to fix?

My 2009 MacBook screen goes to sleep and won't come back on. It just stays black while the computer is still running. This just started happening one day for no apparent reason. Anyway to reconcile?

  • IMac doesn't go to sleep AND pmset -g gives almost no output - frustrating!

It happens once in a while that my Mac doesn't go to sleep. All of a sudden.
Also suddenly, usually after system upgrades (e.g. 10.6.3 to 10.6.4) it starts to sleep with no issues.
Anyway I really need it to sleep automatically. So I started to search.
I found Please Sleep software that forces sleep when system sends a suitable command and logs all events related to power management system.
But guess what, it looks like my Mac doesn't even try to sleep as Please Sleep log (nor system log) shows no such entries, this is all I have:
    +10-11-12 20:52:01 PleaseSleep[1135] Application started+
    +10-11-12 20:52:01 PleaseSleep[1135] Application is enabled+
As you can see NO entries related to power management!
As soon as I change default system language from Polish to English, bingo, Mac sleeps and this is the log:
    +10-11-12 20:52:01 PleaseSleep[1135] Application started+
    +10-11-12 20:52:01 PleaseSleep[1135] Application is enabled+
    +10-11-12 21:02:04 PleaseSleep[1135] Checking sleep conditions...+
    +10-11-12 21:02:04 PleaseSleep[1135] Going to sleep...+
    +10-11-12 21:02:04 PleaseSleep[1135] Sleep notification received from the system+
    +10-11-12 21:19:09 PleaseSleep[1135] Wake notification received from the system+
So what the heck is going on with Polish (maybe other non-English, too) language?
I went a step farther and played with pmset command.
And +pmset -g+ when Mac OS X is set to Polish gives almost no output:
    +Active Profiles:+
    +AC Power -1*+
    +Currently in use:+
When I switch to English I get full report similar to this:
    +Active Profiles:+
    +Battery Power 1+
    +AC Power 2*+
    +Currently in use:+
    +sleep 10+
    +sms 1+
    +displaysleep 10+
    +hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage+
    +gpuswitch 2+
    +halfdim 1+
    +lidwake 1+
    +ttyskeepawake 1+
    +acwake 0+
    +autorestart 0+
    +hibernatemode 3+
    +womp 1+
    +disksleep 10+
Can anyone advise please what's wrong?
After 10.6.5 was made public I installed combo update hoping it will reset the power management and all will be back to normal. Not this time
And again: the problem is ONLY when OS language is set to Polish. When set to English, with the same programs and services in the background the Mac has no issues with sleeping whatsoever!
I created a new account and it didn't help.
I can call Apple Care but I highly doubt they will help.
    Thanks,

    Rod,
You can try clearing some of the caches by doing restarting in Safe Mode. You can also reset the SMC and PRAM.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Screen goes to sleep and won't wakeup

13" macbook screen goes to sleep but won't wakeup reliably. I can see a faint dark screen and I hear the computer working but can't see anything. If I press the screen light keys it will flash a view and almost seems to fix the problem. Closing / opening clamshell a number of times eventually causes it to work. The sleep light on the front sometimes stays solid instead of throbbing. I can even plug a remote monitor in and it will display on the remote.  Using 10.6.8

I've had this issue twice with my 2009 white MacBook.  Fortunately I still had the apple care support which expires in June!  The most recent occurrence was last week.  The inverter board had to be replaced and they actually ended up replacing my LCD this time.  Evidently its a faulty design with this model.  The repair was free to me, but I noted the cost on the invoice when I picked up my computer.  The inverter board and another part were a total of $75, and the LCD was about $300.   But like I said, the first time they did not replace the LCD screen, so it could be a minor repair.

  • My New iPad (16gb   4g) went to sleep, and won't wake up! What should I do?

What should I do? Pls Help!

Assuming that the battery isn't empty (and it can take up to 15 minutes of charging before it will respond), then have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • When I hit the minimize button on Firefox to use the side by side view with Excel in Windows 7, my Firefox window gets larger and won't give me an arrow in the corner to reduce the frame size.

I can't find a menu to resize my minimized window as it is actually larger than the normal window. The frame of firefox goes right off the screen and will not give me a corner arrow to drag it down to size. Normal window view is just fine. How do I correct this?

It is possible that the screen is too wide or too high and that the scroll bars fall off.<br />
Open the system menu via Alt+Space and see if you can resize that window.<br />
If that works then close Firefox to save that setting.<br />
    See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Resizing_oversize_window
Window sizes and positions are stored in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/localstore.rdf localstore.rdf] in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder].
Delete localstore.rdf or rename the file to localstore.rdf.sav in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder] to test if the file is corrupted.<br />
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf<br />
(caution: do not delete the localstore.rdf file in the Firefox program installation folder)
    Note:<br />
Deleting the file [http://kb.mozillazine.org/localstore.rdf localstore.rdf] will reset the customizations of the toolbars to the defaults.<br />
You can rename "localstore.rdf" to "localstore.rdf.sav" to test if that solves it.<br />
Then you can restore the customization by copying "localstore.rdf.sav" to "localstore.rdf" if it didn't work.

  • Repeated kernel panic and won't give power to keyboard

My iMac G5 resently sort of died on me. It was set in sleep-mode one day when its fans started to go as fast as they could. Wierdly a message appeard on the srceen, it was a kernel panic. No big deal I thought but when I restared it the same kernel panic message appeard again. I called apple support and he told me to reset the SMU, so I did and nothing changed. The same kernel panic message over and over again. Mysteriosly my computer went longer into the starting-up process once, it took awfully long time but OS X started and I came to the screen where you choose acounts, but this time I couldn't get any power to my keyboard or mouse so I had to shut down. After further research I came to a acward conclusion: My iMac will give power to my mouse only if I plug it directly into my computer but not via the keyboard. Then I tested with another keyboard and the same error uccured. Why won't my iMac give power to the keyboard. And as I can't get any power to my keyboard I can't start from the start-DVD since I can't press the C-button or any other button for that matter either. My iMac is just over a year and the warranty is just overstepped. Please help this helpless swede.

  • Adobe has my money and won't give me my serial number!

For those of you who have successfully downloaded an upgrade to Lightroom 3 with serial numbers, congratulations!  If you haven't, you might beware that you might not get a serial number and neither customer nor technical support has ANY answer for you.
When I downloaded, in the serial number field on the download page, I had a message to "Contact Customer Support" where the serial number should be.  When I ran the install on my mac, the readme file said if I had a licensed version installed on my computer, the upgrade would see that and install.  Well, of course it didn't. So, I went back to my order screen on Adobe.com, retrieved my serial number for version 1, and plugged it into the install screen -- still wouldn't take it.
OK, I'll call customer support like it says to do.  After explaining the situation to the service representative, he immediately says I'll have to talk to a "higher authority" and transfers me to someone else.  I explain the problem to her, she immediately says "that's a technical issue, you'll have to talk to Technical Support", and transfers me there.  The tech support guy says it's a customer service issue and says he going to transfer me to them, at which point I tell him he's already the 3rd person I've talked to, but he transfers me there anyway.  Back at customer service, the  rep then says, "you may have to wait 24 hours for your serial number to be sent to you."  But the email I already received,  headed "Your serial numbers", clearly says it back in my order screen/download page, which all of them looked at while I was talking to them!  It didn't help that the accents/understandability of each person worsened with each transfer.
Right now, I'll run it in trial mode, but its a cautionary tale for those of use who are early adopters of the upgrade.  They may not be ready for us. This is inexcusable for a company the size of Adobe. Jeez.
Thanks, just venting makes me feel better...
    Dave

The good news is that anyone who can download the product can use it and all of its features for 30 days w/o the serial number.
I am fine with mistakes happening.  I can forgive that as long as it is acknowledged.  But what I cannot forgive is an attitude that the customer is doing something wrong when they are not.  I also have no sympathy for trying to cover up a problem and just trying to brush it off as if there is no issue at all.  This has been my personal experience today with Adobe.  So no, I am not give them some slack here.
A few years back when I upgraded a master collection, I had an issue.  The installer included a beta version for Photoshop.  I was not too happy about this.  But Adobe quickly admitted that they made a mistake (and they did it publicly on this forum if I am not mistaken) and apologized.  I even got a call from someone senior at Adobe to apologize.  Within hours, they figured out exactly who was affected and sent them all e-mails.  I think that almost everyone was fine with the problem after they admitted it.  But Adobe did not learn from this mistake as is issue here today.  Either they were willfully covering up this mistake or they have no organizational structure that can quickly identify problems like this when they arise to properly communicate the problem to their customers.  Either way, it says a lot about the organization.  The fact that my rep didn't even know that Lightroom 3 had been released when I first talked to her says everything to me.  They ought to be prepared whenever there is a new release of any of their products.  And they should be on the lookout for systemic issues.
