Problems upgrading to Lion with 2010-vintage MacBook Pro?

I'm seeinhg horror stories. I would like to upgrade so I can use iCloud from my computer, but I'm nervous.
What's up?

You can easily eliminate practically all risk just by making a bootable clone of your drive on an external drive before upgrading. If you do that, the worst that can happen is that if you decide you don't like Lion, you'll have to start up from the external drive, erase the internal drive, and clone the external drive's contents back onto it. Even if you have to do that, it's very simple, and it shouldn't take more than a couple of hours of unattended operation to make the clone in each direction.

  • Can I upgrade to Mountain Lion with my 2008 MAcbook Pro?

I have a 2008 MAcbook pro 10.6.8 , 2,5 GHz Intel duel core, 4 GB MHz 17 Inch.    It works fine but I am about to receive a new iPhone 5 and want to use iCloud. Is my computer compatible with doing this? ANd what will be different if I do? Will my computer be faster or slower or stay the same?? I also have a older version of Word for MAc (2008 or 2009) , I dont think it will work anymore if I upgrade. Thanks for your help!

You are using 10.6.8, so you can sync the iPhone 5 with your computer in this version. However, if you want to use iCloud, you have to upgrade. In this case, you can upgrade to Lion and Mountain Lion. OS X Mountain Lion needs a Mid/Late 2007 or newer MacBook Pro. Read > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs
First, open the App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion. While it's been downloaded, make a backup of your data with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner, and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
When the download finishes, the OS X Mountain Lion installer will show up, so follow the steps to upgrade to Mountain Lion. After upgrading, open System Preferences > iCloud, and follow its steps to set up iCloud on your MacBook Pro.
Microsoft Office 2008 and 2011 works in Mountain Lion, but if you have 2008, you should update it to the most recent version before upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion

Will my macbook benefit from upgrading to Mountain Lion or should I just keep my Snow Leopard? Thanks for your suggestions. : )

I selected this on price alone - the local Tigert Direct had a 50% off promotion.

  • Plethora of problems on brand new mid 2010 13" MacBook Pro

This computer is about a month old and has been behaving very strangely since just a few days into its life.
    Symptoms:
    1. Computer would freeze or otherwise become unresponsive after being woken from sleep.
    2. Music would keep playing long after iTunes has been shut down. Repeatedly starting up iTunes again and shutting it down only produced an additional layer of sound. Only remedy was to reboot.
    3. Freeze (I gave up waiting after half an hour) on the boot HD choice screen for Bootcamp with Windows 7. It would keep displaying the 2 hard drives on a grey background, fans would spin up, northbridge felt incredibly hot. After about 5 attempts with booting directly into Windows 7 from Mac OS X from the System Preferences > Startup Disk pane, the choice screen started working properly.
    4. Safari 5 sometimes slows down and/or beachballs, plus often crashes while browsing casually. I have not been able to find the source of this problem. It's not Flash, not embedded Quicktime video, I don't know what it is.
    5. Computer would randomly adjust keyboard backlighting and screen brightness without any change in light conditions, in the middle of the night for example. Manually adjusting screen brightness right after waking the laptop from sleep recently froze it indefinitely.
    6. Mouse cursor sometimes lags for a second or so, only to recover in performance.
*I tried to fix the problem:*
    1. Running all the latest software possible, on every front, down to plug-ins and 3rd party apps. Never attempted any system modifications, themes, or other mods.
    2. Checked HD with Disk Utility, repaired permissions. Same again, but with Drive Genius 3. No problems were detected.
    3. I have reset my PRAM and the SMC/PMU.
    Results:
    1. Fan now speeds up uncontrollably and randomly almost up to the maximum 6200 rpm. I have never, ever, witnessed such speeds before under any amount of load. This can occur while browsing the Finder, while watching HD video off Youtube with ClickToFlash, or while looking at simple text webpages. The fan would never spin up this much before, not even while attempting to watch 4K video in Flash which I suppose is quite taxing.
    2. None of the other problems have gone away.
    3. In Windows 7, I still got solid gaming performance, although I have obviously never let it fall asleep under Windows in sheer fear of what might occur. I have not tried running Windows after the PRAM and SMC/PMU reset yet.
    Questions:
    1. Is this normal to occur on a brand new laptop? If it isn't, what can I do to fix it?
    2. If there is nothing else I can do, how can/will Apple help me? I am tired of not being sure whether or not my computer will perform or not, and I need it for things like rushed coursework and presentations.
Thank you all for your advice in advance. I am truly frustrated and will appreciate all the help I can get.

Since waking it up 2 hours ago, I can no longer use the MacBook Pro in OS X. It unavoidably freezes right after connecting to the internet.

  • Why is the 2010 i7 MacBook Pro so laggy on Lion?

Now, here's my issue: my 2009 iMac works with lion perfectly with all applications. My MacBook Air, which I'll admit, I don't use much, appears to work fine under Lion; however, my 2010 i7 MacBook Pro is just pathetic at times. Now, it's most apparent in Safari, maybe that's just because I use Safari most often, where scrolling and zooming is very laggy. Sometimes I'll expand my fingers and have to wait a good 2 seconds or more to see the zoom animation cut through where it's supposed to be, relative to how far apart my fingers are. This does not happen on my 2009 iMac with the Magic mouse hooked up, but it is quad-core i7 vs the MacBook Pro's dual-core i7. It just doesn't make sense though. I know the Sandybridge i5's in the lowend MacBook Pros are more powerful than my i7 MacBook Pro, but they can't be so much more powerful that they lack all of these animation defects, while I feel them full force, right? Maybe it's the GPU? I honestly haven't tried keeping my Pro set to it's GT 330m because I thought it to be more of a CPU issue because the animation sems so simple even for the Intel Graphics 2000. I also see a huge issue when entering text in a text field, though this also happens in pages. I'll type words and they wont appear until seconds after. I'm rather perplexed at this issue, is the problem Lion? Should I report this under Apple Care, or what? Thanx for the help, guys!

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
Kaspersky cannot possibly convey any benefit and its presence will only complicate troubleshooting. Uninstall it according to its instructions. This document may help, though it appears woefully outdated: http://support.kaspersky.com/8366. Unfortunately I can't help any more than that. I attempted to install Kaspersky to evaluate it, but the installer repeatedly failed for reasons I was unable to determine.
Determine if the problems also exist in Safe Mode:
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.
Corsair RAM is known to be deficient on Macs, and Google products are notorious for causing Macs to perform poorly.

  • Can Aperture V. 3.4.5 read Panasonic GH4 Raw Photo Files? Is problem using Vintaged MacBook Pro 8  years old?

Have vintaged MacBook Pro 15" running Mac OSX 10.7.5 but can't view downloaded GH4 Photos and all available software upgrades loaded?
My GH4 photos show in aperture running on my iMac 27 at home (2-3 years old)?
Anyway to get the Vintage Macbook Pro and Aperture 3.4.5 to view the GH4 photos/

That camera is not yet supported, see the list of currently available RAW support:
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
It usually takes a few month after the release of a new camera for the RAW support to be available.
But even, when the RAW support will  finally be released, it will probably require the latest version of MacOS X Mt. Lion or Mavericks - all recent RAW support has been released only for the newer versions of Aperture or iPhoto.
As a work-around, use the software that comes with the camera (SILKYPIX) to convert your RAW to a different lossless format (e.g. TIFF)
(Download SILKYPIX Developer Studio for Mac - RAW photo ...)

  • HT1237 Searching for an EFI Firmware update to enable Lion Internet Recovery on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

    Hi All,
My Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch started having random kernel panics lately (more than 1 month of random kernel panics now), usually associated with request such as "open new tab in Safari" etc.
Since I installed 2x4GB RAM modules from Crucial when I bought my MBP (they are +- 2 years old now) and also exchanged my DVD-drive for an extra SSD that now runs the system (fully updated 10.7.4) I have a feeling that those kernel panics might be HW related.
I wanted to run Apple Hardware Test but found out that it is no longer supported on Lion. Since I don't have any optical drive to install AHT from (also I don't have the CDs with me atm), I found out that I can install an EFI Firmware update that enables internet-based (?) AHT.
At http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904# , the link from MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) links to MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.6 which is for Early 2010 models only and doesn't allow me to run the installation process. I'm looking for an EFI update to enable Apple Hardware Test on my Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch.
Is there an update that can do this? Is there a wrong hyperlink on Apple page or am I searching for a wrong update?
Also, even though this should probably be in a separate topic, can anyone please point me to the right direction for a good Apple Kernel Panic how-to-read-those topic?
Thank you very much in advance.

    Hey Cris from London,
I would try out the recommended steps in the following link:

  • New problem with display on Macbook Pro retina (Samsung panel)

    Hello All,
I am a very new people on your forum but a few weeks ago i bought a new macbook pro retina with samsung panel.
I haven't ghosting effect on my macbook but i have a new and really bad problem.
I try to found a some information on Russians forums but nobody can help me with it.
I can see an artifacts in the form of flashing pixels on all display.
It occurs in 20-30 minutes after the start of work.
Today i try to test it on game Dirt 2 and i can see defects after 2 minutes after start. So i think it can be reason with Geforce 650 but when i back to desktop and use HD 4000 i still see a problem.
This is best seen on a black screen with high backlight.
When i try to connect TV via HDMI i can't see any problem in my TV.
So i really don't know what could be the reason.
I attached the video with issue to video hosting
    http://vimple.ru/579f880e8b7045e09f8fc5bc097c5e2b
Also i have a many software problem like Crashing safari and iTunes. It can be a few times per day.
I really disappointed with my new Macbook.
I haven't any problem with old 2009 Macbook pro with Snow Leopard but Mountain Lion is not working well.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

    Hi,
I purchased Huawei Dongle and trying to connect with my new MacBook Pro (OS- Mountain Lion) USB port 3.0 but unfortunately it does not support.
When I plugged in my macbook the power is flowing in dongle due green light blinking twice in every 3 sec but no connection found or diver shown.
Please let me know how I have to use it. I got some suggestion for USB hub 2.0 but It does not make any sense and driver installation.
So please suggest proper direction to use it and provide link to install any driver.
    Thanks
    Tauheed Ahmad

Yes Clinton I did same, but they were (Huawei customer support) surprised about this problem, They behave like they have no idea about USB 2.0 and  3.0 knowledge. They handsUp that reason I posted my problem in this forum.
So is there any better solution to use any mediator between these USB version handling, Please let me know.
    Thanks

  • I just upgraded to lion on my intel macbook.  I would like to change my facetime alert to something different than a phone ring and, I would like to be able to have full screen.  How do I do this?

I just upgraded to lion on my intel macbook.  I would like to change my facetime alert to something different than a phone ring and, I would like to be able to have full screen.  How do I do this?

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • No Lion Operating System Disk(s) with my new MacBook Pro?

Hi, Just bought my wife a new MacBook Pro yesterday.  We are probably old school but we were both surprised to NOT find Lion OS disks in the box.
We called the Apple Store where we made the purchase and they told us they were not currently shipping Lion OS disks with new systems???
How can obtain OS disk(s) for Lion and her new MacBook Pro?
Optional purchase?  A website for a download?  Anyone else run into this situation?
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Jim

Hi luke: Yes I know how you feel. I felt thesame way when those forst imacs came out with no floppy disk drives and with a read-only optical one. But now you can't find floppies anywhere xo life goes on.
In any case you can, at least, make your own recovery disk. I did it and it works just fine. Here's a set of directions that I followed that I copied from some poster (sorry but I lost the originator so can't give him credit).
•.          Purchase and download Lion from the Mac App Store on any Lion compatible Mac running Snow Leopard.
•.          Right click on “Mac OS X Lion” installer and choose the option to “Show Package Contents.”
•.          Inside the Contents folder that appears you will find a SharedSupport folder and inside the SharedSupport folder you will find the “InstallESD.dmg.” This is the Lion boot disc image we have all been waiting for.
•.          Copy “InstallESD.dmg” to another folder like the Desktop.
•.          Launch Disk Utility and click the burn button.
•.          Select the copied “InstallESD.dmg” as the image to burn, insert a standard sized 4.7 GB DVD, and wait for your new Lion Boot Disc to come out toasty hot.
It is important that you burn your Lion boot disc or backup the Lion installer prior to installing Lion itself. If left in the Applications folder the installer will be removed after the Lion installation is completed. If you are reading this article after upgrading to Lion all is not lost. A fresh copy of the Lion installer can always be redownloaded from the Mac App Store by clicking on the Purchased tab with the Option key held down.
With the Lion boot disc you can boot any Lion compatible Mac, and install 10.7 just like you installed previous versions of Mac OS X. You can even use Disk Utility's Restore function to image your Lion boot disc image onto a external drive suitable for performing a clean install on a optical-drive-less MacBook Air, or Mac mini. Clean installs with Lion are easy once you find where Apple has hidden the boot disk.
Hope this is useful to you.
    Rick

  • I am having a problem with my 2009 Macbook Pro

    Hello Everyone,
I am having a problem with my 2009 Macbook Pro .  A few weeks ago I plugged it into the charger after running it down to reserve battery power. It appeared to be charging, but then all of a sudden my clock and calender reset to year 2000 and then my computer blacked out and went dead. I tried to boot it up but nothing happened (literally nothing).   I have tried 3 different chargers on it, but all I get is a faint green light and even after hours it still won't boot up.   I have tried replacing the battery, but still nothing happens.
Any Ideas?  I am pretty desperate to get my computer back up and running before school finals.

You may have to see if an authorized Apple service specialist can check over
the charging system (magsafe dc-in board, power adapter, and MacBook/Pro)
and test or run a diagnostic on it, to be sure there is no damage or failed parts.
When you attached the adapter to charge the computer, after it said it was going
to reserve power, did you shut down open applications and stop using the MB/Pro?
That would've been the thing to do, since the margin of run-time near the bottom
of the power cycle can be wrong by the gauge estimate, it can just quit.
While I have not researched your year/model/series in detail, I do know some
models of Apple portable computers have a small battery or capacitor on the
logic board, separate from the main power battery; it may need replacement.
A service provider w/ Apple training & parts would be a likely resource to fix it.
    Good luck & happy computing!
