Problems using avis in final cut

hi there -has any1 else had trouble editing avi files in FCpro?
Its a wierd 1 - when I click on the actual file it opens the video in the browser window and plays fine, but when I drop it into a squence to edit it I either get the unrendered message and beeps or a stuttering image and no sound - whats up with that?
I've got some soft ware to conrert the avi into a mov but it takes about 2-3 hours and the files size multiplies by around 10x - not ideal!
also once I've finished editing a file what do I have to save it as in oredr for it to work independently to the original source file (so as I can delete some of these massive .mov conversions)
any help would be massivly appreciated

sorry to be a pain but this one has got me proper stumped - I've managed to get round the sound problem by converting it to a .mov in divx doctor, but the picture is still playing up - it works fine when previewing from the browser win dow, and shows still images from the film when paused in the canvas window but when I try to play it all I get is the unrendered message.
It seems to be doing this with files that I'm pretty sure were working last week so it maybe some thing that I've done (cant think what though)
Any ideas guys - this is sending me round the bend man - surely it shouldn't be this hard to do something simple like splice an avi - I thought final cut was sposed to be the industry standard???

P.s. - looked for the pixel demensions ect but dont really know what to do with them - the compressor is 3ivx mpeg-4 5.0
and the frame size is 608 x 336 ???????

Problems opening avi into Final Cut

Hi I'm having a real problem importing some raw avi files into final cut 6 and even watching them with quicktime. The problem is, when I open them on my macbook (QT v 7.4.0) i see them fine but on my PowerPC G5 they say 'codec not supported'. I had QT 7.4.1 on the powerPC machine and assumed that was the problem so i followed the advice on these forums and downgraded to v 7.3.1 The problem is i still can't see anything! I then tried installing perian which hasn't helped. The funny thing is that in quicktime it says the format is 'dvsd' with a frame rate of 24.88 where as my macbook claims the format is 'dv' with a framerate of 25 which sounds a lot more likely to me. The installation on the macbook is pretty vanilla with standard leopard and final cut 6 so there is no fancy codecs on there opening the files. I have 34 50min episodes of this stuff and couldn't bare to sit watching my macbook spend the next month encoding it for DVD (i only need to use final cut to add a titles sequence). Any help would be much appreciated!

I know, you are correct about using a PC but i don't have one with any decent editing/DVD software on. All i need to do is delete the title sequences on the video and add one I have created using motion. Plus, i have already created all the DVD menus using DVD studio and the idea of going to and from a PC to a MAC so much makes my head start to hurt.
I think it's the fact that my macbook will open the files happily in final cut (with a little warning that 'the files are not optimised for final cut') but that my big mac won't is what i find really frustrating!

Installing used copy of Final Cut Studio 2

I've been reading around the net and haven't been able to find a very clear answer as to what happens when you buy and install a used copy of Final Cut Studio. I understand that the program can be sold as soon as it is completely uninstalled from the seller's machine, but it's what happens after that on the buyer's machine that I am dealing with.
It is important to note that I am dealing with full versions of the program, not upgrades (nor do I have to option to consider them in my situation).
These are my questions;
1. When the buyer (me) installs the seller's used copy of Final Cut Studio 2 will I be able to install the program on both a desktop & laptop like when the suite is new (this is vital because I am getting a new laptop and need studio on both machines)?
2. If (for some unknown reason) the seller's used copy of FCS2 doesn't install, can I install FCS HD without any problems?
3. If for some reason FCS2 isn't completely uninstalled from the seller's machine will it impede my installation process of FCS2?
Any info you can give me in regard to any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. It is a bit time sensitive (not that I have a deadline but I need to do this asap) so immediate responses would be amazing.

2. When I say FCS 2 I mean the suite that came with Final Cut Pro 6, DVD Studio Pro 4, Motion 3, LiveType 2, Soundtrack Pro 2, Color, Compressor 3. I'm pretty sure it will play nicely with a new intel machine.
When I say FCS HD I mean the suite that came with Final Cut Pro (5.1.4), DVD Studio Pro, Motion 2, and Soundtrack Pro, and Compressor 2. This version (5.1) was made to work with intel machines.

Using music in Final Cut Express

I loaded music into iTunes. It's music written and performed by my friend. I'm editing a video for him.
In the old iTunes you could convert any song to an MP3 version. They you could import and use the song in Final Cut Express with no problem. Now I don't see that option. It's either not there on one of my iMacs or it's grayed out in another.
How can convert my songs to that I can edit and use music.

Ideally, you should use should use the original file instead of MP3/AAC.
And you don't use MP3 in Final Cut Express.

I am having a problem with playback in Final Cut 6.0.6

I am having a problem with playback in Final Cut 6.0.6 of 1920x1080 60p footage.
I transcoded MTS files shot on a Sony NEX FS100 into Apple Pro Res mov files but the
playback stutters in Final Cut and QTime making it impossible to edit. Is this because the files
are just so big the computer is having a problem processing them? If so what should I edit in to preserve the
best quality?
I am Running Mac OSX 10.6.8
2x2.4 Ghz Quad Core Intel
32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
Admittedly my FCUT is out of date, I intend to up to X when I finish off an ongoing project.

You might consider running diskwarrior on your drive (alsoft.com). And run diskutility, repair disk. A corruption of the drive could cause problems. Also, drive speed starts to fall sharply as the drive gets full. Make sure you have a minimum of 10% free space on the drive. You might also get a utility to check the speed of the drive. I think Aja has one.
Also, do you have anything else connected to the firewire bus? If so, try disconnecting it. You might also try disconnecting ethernet and turning off your airport. Resetting your fcp preferences couldn't hurt.

The only Programms I worked with are DVD Studio Pro and iDVD. You can burn a Video-DVD with Toast but there is no real option to design your Menu. Just a few themes as far as I discovered.
Do you have a Blue Ray Device to burn* the HD-DVD? Are the Bride and Groom able to watch the Blue Ray?
* which is only possible with DVD Studio Pro and not iMovie as far as I know.

For better quality I would go the Compressor & DVD Studio Pro workflow I just learned.
Export the Movie as is from Final Cut Pro and then use Compressor to encode the File.
Consider delivering the Movie in a different way like a private video on vimeo, a Website or on an SD card which is not really romantic...

if bandwidth is an issue, because you're hosting on your own servers, consider the free codec xh264, you can install as a free QT-plug-in.. with low or super-low bitrates, it offers a superior quality compared to h264 ...

Problem with Capturing in FInal Cut Pro

Hey guys...im trying to capture from my TV to my macbook using Final Cut Pro and my external capture card. I have an ADS Pyro Tech DV Link capture card for informational purposes. The problem is, when i capture, my video is EXTREMELY dark...does anybody have any suggestions on what to do, or other programs that may work in capturing video from my capture card?

Major Problem with audio from Final Cut to DVd Studio Pro

I am posting this problem again because no further responses have been received regarding my first post. I purchased an MR-HD100 Firestore device from Focus Enhancements. When I use clips from it alone or with other clips created by digitizing from min DV tape on a sequence or timeline the audio works fine in Final Cut. When I import any type of file and believe me I have been trying all kinds of suggestions and wasting almost a dozen DVDs. Whether it be a Final Cut QT file, going straight to compressor and producing an MPEG-2 file and a dolby audio file .ac3 importing them into DVD SP and making the adjustments that MR. Harbsmeier suggested DIAL NORM at -31dbfs and COMPRESSION MODE to NONE, as well as the suggestion to make an aif file with the audio and importing it into DVD SP as well as the video. I get the same result with every try, the clips made with the firestore are so low you cannot hear them. NOTHING WORKS!!!!. And yes I have tried making a DVD with just digitized footage and yes it turned out fine. I called Apple support today and that gentlemen basically told me I am out of warranty so phone help was not available. However, he made a suggestion of changing sequence presets in Final Cut which has now developed into another problem. I have messed up my settings so bad I don't know where I am I can't LOG & CAPTURE in the manner I used to ???? Could someone please advise as to why this problem exists and the correction to resolve it. I do not understand why the audio works fine playing the sequence on the timeline in Final Cut. It plays fine after making a Final Cut QT file. AND it plays fine in simulation mode in DVD Studio Pro. However after you burn a DVD the audio from the firestore clips are not to be heard unless you crank up the speakers or TV to it's maximum level and you can barely make it out. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME Projects are stacking up and was really hoping to go tapeless

Try building the project to your desktop and then open the Video_TS in the Mac DVD player application.
How does it play/sound? This application is the best way to see and hear how your burned DVD should play vs. just using simulator and burning.
Just to clarify- are you taking your FC QT file into Compressor and creating a MPG-2 and AC3 file or are you bringing your FC QT directly into DSP?
What codec are you exporting from FC? ProRes422, DV, H264?
Open the FC QT in QT and apple+I to see this.

Problem when HD movie (Final Cut Pro edited) viewed at smaller sizes on youtube

Does anyone else get occasional lines during motion (not interlacing) and motion jerks with their HD video when it is viewed in anything other than Full Size HD?
I am having this problem and it's driving me crazy trying to figure out where the problem is. Original footage was shot on an HD JVC Camera 1920 x 1080/50p AVCHD. Final Cut Pro converts it to 29.97 Apple ProRes 422 with Field Dominance: Upper (Odd).
Please refer to the attached file to see the compression settings I used in MPEG Streamclip. I found that I saw a lot of jumpyness before seting the data rate at 15000 kbps. There is still slight "lag" on panning shots, but watching the converted file on my computer and in Full HD on youtube (at full size) it is acceptable.
Is this a problem with youtube or with my conversion process? I have heard that AVCHD cameras have caused similar problems for others. Has anyone found a solution?

At around 0.51m, 1.20m and 2.08m motion lines/ glitches are most noticeable. Seems to happen mostly during panning/ movement shots.

Input problem w/ USB to Final Cut Pro?

I have a Canon Vixia HF S30 which uses flash memory. The only outputs I have on the camera are HDMI and USB 2.0. My computer recognizes the camera as a flash drive but Final Cut Pro 7 will not. I have tried tinkering with a number of settings in the Log and Transfer window with no success. I am guessing that there must be an issue of Final Cut Pro not located the camera because it is connected to the USB drive and not the firewire. I have tried to find a setting under Audio/Video for a non-firewire connection, but have found none. I am confident that it can work with Final Cut Pro because it had in the past before I had to reformat and reinstall Final Cut Pro. I just can't remember the correct settings to import the video. Please help!

Log and Transfer works with both USB and FireWire -the majority of tapeless cameras connect via USB but you could jst as easily use a Disk Image of that cameras card located on a FW drive.
There are two things that cause problems -the directory structure of a card not being intact is one.
There are also multiple video file types, not all of which are compatible because various manufacturers add their own tweaks to the AVCHD format.
Some manufacturers provide a plug in for their camera so that it works in FCP.
If Canon don't provide one for that camera you can use MPEG Streamclip (free) to transcode the files to ProRes LT or ClipWrap ($50).

Problems in creating new final cut title in motion 5.0.5, not read from fcx

i am trying to create title in motion 5.0.5, but after saved them in new category i open them in final cut x (10.0.5) and just see a red icon, same thing happen if i just open a title in fcx and try to "open a copy in motion", without doing anything, just opening and saving but cannot use in final cut.
any help?.

Even if I just open a copy in motion of an existing title in fc, and save it again I obtain the same result.

Sync problem w/ DVD from Final Cut Pro X

My project is a 2-hour play. I improved the audio in ProTools then dragged it back into FCP. I was able to get the improved audio to sync perfectly with the video (both are 48K), then mute the original audio. I checked the whole 2-hour play for sync. I burned a DVD, played it on my DVD player, and the audio gets ahead of the video around the 30 minute mark and keeps drifting. Several DVD burns yield the same problem. Any advice?

Thanks Russ. OK, I am now rendering again via Compressor 4, this time I have 2 files in one tab - 1) a MPEG-2 and 2) an AC3 file. Seems to make sense.
To burn the DVD immediately after, I added a 'Job Action' to 'Create DVD' after the render, and the dialog confuses me. No problems with the 'Job Action' tab, but the "A/V Attributes" tab indicates the follwing:
Type: Final Cut Pro.app (shouldn't this be a reference to the rendered file/s?)
Video - showing the same dimensions of my FCPx Project file (NTSC ..640 x 480) instead of the MPEG-2 (Pal ...720 x 576).
Audio - Properties show Linear PCM... 6 channels, etc... not the AC3 file.
My question is, how do I create a DVD from the newly rendered files output from Compressor - is the Job Action the way to do it, and if so, how do I get it to reference the new files?

Problem sending timeline from Final Cut to a Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project

Hello,
Thank you in advance for reading. I am having trouble sending a timeline from Final Cut to a Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project. Final Cut makes a new Soundtrack Pro project file just fine and opens Soundtrack Pro as it's supposed to, but the project in Soundtrack Pro only has a portion of my audio tracks. I've tried sending by control clicking the sequence in the browser and selecting 'Send to Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project' as well as highlighting my entire timeline and doing the same. Both result in the same Soundtrack Pro proejct with about 1/3 of my total 48 audio tracks (lots of sound FX).
I'm using Final Cut 7.0.2 and Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1 My computer is a Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8, 2.26 ghz intel core 2 duo, 4 gb ram.
Any suggestions (or workarounds, if it comes to that) anyone has will be greatly appreciated.

Problems opening project in Final Cut Studio 2 after installing FCP X

After installing Final Cut Pro X, a friend is having problems opening his older FCS 2 Projekts ind FCS 2.
Projekt starts loading and around 35 % crashes.
Ist there a prossibility to fix this ? Any experience ?

yes, the funny thing is, I have FCS 6 and FCP X on one Disk running Snowleopard.
NO problems. Uprade to Lion... No Problems.
And also I could not find information on the web of somebody else having this problem.
