Problems using iPhoto via Screen Sharing

To deal with our family's ever-growing photo library, I bought a new Mac Mini with a jumbo hard drive. For now, I want to run this as a headless server so that whoever wants to can work with the photo library from whichever of our other Macs is handy, so I've set it up with Screen Sharing.
So far so good, I've copied the iPhoto library there and things seem to work well except for one important detail: When I try to see/edit the detail of any photo, I just get a black screen! Or rather, the iPhoto window contains a big black rectangle where the photo should be. If I touch the zoom control, the navigation mini-view shows up correctly, but I still can't see the picture itself. Oddly enough, if I look at the detail of a video, I can see the first frame (but no more than that, the "play" button doesn't do anything).
I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.7 on both machines, iPhoto '11 (9.1.3) on the server.
I realize that I can access the photo library directly from iPhoto on the "client" using iPhoto's built-in sharing mechanism, but that won't give me full control of the remote photo library.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Do you see the same if you're working directly on the Mini?  Do you see anything in the middle of the black screen?  Maybe something like this:
If so then that's an indication that the file path to the original file has been broken.
So make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE: You do know that you can connect an external HD to the Mini and let the other computer log into it and access the library on the EHD for full access to the photos, right? However, doing so wirelessly is dangerous due to dropouts that can occur and if they do while the library's database file is being written to the database can be damaged.  So if you're wirelessly connected between the two Macs screen sharing would be the safest way to go. If you're wired then the other method would be optimal.

  • Problem using iPhoto via NAS from 2 computers

I have an iPhoto library stored on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive on my home wireless LAN. My wife and I each have a MacBook that we use to open the library from the NAS. I recently added some photos to the library using my MacBook. When I open the same library from my wife's MacBook, I cannot see all of the photos. In fact, the list of Events that you see when I open the library from my MacBook is very different from what we see when we open the same library from her MacBook. When I open it I can see 497 photos, but when she opens it we can only see 70 photos.
Can anyone help with this issue? Thank you!!

would I be able to use the photos across the network?
What do you mean by “use”? Certainly wireless is perfectly good for viewing another Library via iPhoto Sharing.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and move to the other machine. There, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both machines for this to work.
If, however, you want the other two machines to have full access - i.e. Ownership - of the Library, then bluntly, I would not trust my iPhoto Library on a wireless connection.

  • Why can't I connect to my Mac Mini via Finder (but I CAN via screen sharing)?

My problem concerns a quad-core 2.0 GHz Mac Mini Server (mid 2011, I think) with SSD and 3 external hard drives. It's (a) my desktop workstation (b) our Time Machine backup repository (c) iTunes server and (d) Printopia server for our iDevices. That's it. The only thing I use the server app for, really, is Time Machine.
So recently we lost power a couple of times. As always, I ran Disk Utility, repaired permissions and verified the main disk. All appeared well.
But all is assuredly not well. Now, none of my other Macs can (a) find the Time Machine backup volume or (b) connect to the server at all. Whenever I try either thing, I receive the message below:
The network is in flawless shape otherwise. My router is the latest generation Airport Extreme Base Station. The server has a static IP, and I CAN connect to it from my other Macs by clicking Finder, then Go, then entering the IP address -- but ONLY if I use an smb:// prefix!
Moreover, even when I'm connected in this way, I STILL get the message whenever I try to connect by merely clicking the name on the finder sidebar -- or whenever I try to access the machine using Time Machine preferences. Weirder still, I CANNOT connect to the ip address via afp.
Final piece of weirdness: I can also connect to this machine from any other Mac via screen sharing. So please....
WHAT'S MY PROBLEM AND HOW CAN I FIX IT? I've wracked my brains, combed through forums and can find nobody else with this problem, let alone a solution. The problem persists when I shut down the server app.
I'm assuming that either something is corrupted or some setting is afoul, but can't figure out what it might me,
I'm just about at the point of reformatting my main drive and reinstalling Mountain Lion, but am hoping someone can spare me that pain.
    THANK YOU so much!
    Arthur P. Johnson
P.S. I have no problem at all with outbound connections from this bewitched Mini. Just inbound.
P.P.S I will, of course, be happy to provide shots of any other settings you may desire,

For some reason, the error box photo didn't appear in my post. Here it is:

  • Transferring Mail from one Mac to another via Screen Sharing

    Hi,
I live in California. My Mother lives in Montreal. She has to computers. A Mac Mini and new MacBook.
What I want to do is transfer her Mail from the Mac Mini to the MacBook via Screen Sharing or Remote Management. In other words, I want to do this from my computer.
How does one go about this? What somewhere is needed to make it all work?
    Thanks in advance.

you can't screen share between 3 computers. but you can between two. the easiest way is via ichat. users need to log into ichat on both computers and then you can send a request to share screen via ichat. it's also possible to do it without ichat but that might be more difficult that your mother can manage if she is not too computer savvy which I suspect is the case here. first she has to enable screen sharing in her system preferences->sharing. that's easy. but if she has a router (does she) then she need to port forward port public port 5900 on the router to the port 5900 on her computer so that you can get through the router when trying to screen share from outside. particular instructions on port forwarding depend on the router model. once the port is forwarded you can vnc to here computer from where you are by going to go menu-.connect to server in finder. then in the popup enter
    vnc://ip.address
where the ip.address is the ip address of her router. she can find it out by going to this website for example
    http://www.whatismyip.com/
but all in all, it's much easier with ichat as no port forwarding is required.

  • Someone was watching me via Screen Sharing

I just noticed someone was watching me via Screen Sharing. I clicked the little button in the top right of my screen and momentarily caught the IP address before they jumped off.
Is there any log for this info that I can get so I can find out who this jerk is?
    Please HELP!

As for Back to My Mac (BtMM), I had only clicked "start" to set up that particular sharing option. Occasionally I wish to access my powermac from other locations, but I never was able to get it to work for myself. I tried connecting from my in-law's place (a few miles away), but never got it figured out. I did leave BtMM on though.
As for Sharing options, I did have File Sharing, Printer Sharing and Screen Sharing turned on. Wherever there was an option for selected users only, I did select that. I know specifically that on Screen Sharing I DID have "Allow access for:" turned on for my wife and myself. That was all.

  • Launch MC via screen sharing

Controlling a Mac running Lion from another Mac running Lion via screen sharing, I can't lauch Mission Control on the remote Mac via gestures or keyboard shortcuts. They always launch MC on the local Mac instead.
On Snow Leopard, when Screen Sharing was the active app, every action (mouse/keyboard) happened on the remote Mac.
    Any ideas?

This is of interest to me as well. Has anyone found a solution? Thanks.

  • Upgrading 10.8 to 10.9 via Screen Sharing

Has anyone done such an upgrade on the Server? I reckon the Server part doesn't change the matter much given that it's a completely separate add-on nowadays, but still. Screen Sharing and ssh all function properly at the moment and I want to use the usual App Store upgrade method to go from 10.8 to Mavericks. Compatibility/etc problems aside, I'm only worried about not being able to regain access to the box either via ssh or Screen Sharing.

I've done some OS X upgrades that way.  (Most recently from 10.6 to 10.9.)   It can work.  But if anything should go wrong with the upgrade, you're basically stuck and will need on-site help and/or a way to remotely access the keyboard and display hardware path; a network-accessible KVM.
You're also flying blind for some parts of the upgrade, and waiting for the server to reappear can become... concerning.
    Have good, complete backups, etc.

    Hi,
This page should show you the default info for accessing the Belkin
    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Belkin/F5D8231-4/iChat.ht m
It should not need the Port Forwarding (I Believe UPnP is in System Settings at the bottom of the menu on the left)
Also check the settings in the various menus for Blocking responses to Internet Pings.
If it has it you want to disable this.
Error 7 is also caused by DOS or SPI filters.
If this device has these it should be turned off.
I tested with someone only yesterday that had one of these and it worked out of the box (well he only turned UPnP on)

  • Unable to use clipboard during screen sharing

I was wondering how to use the clipboard function on the screen sharing toolbar. I have all Macs, running leopard. I've tried copying a file on my iMac, then remoting into my son's Macbook with screen sharing. On the screen sharing toolbar, there is a button labeled "send contents to remote clipboard" I click that and can see the file in the remote clipboard. But, when I right click "Paste item" on the remote desktop, I get an error "The items on the clipboard cannot be pasted to this location. One or more of the items may have been deleted or are no longer available"
I got a feeling I'm doing something wrong, but not sure what it is. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have that problem in making bookmarks. I try again, the error pops up and the bookmark is created.
There are a number of problems with Reader/Acrobat and MS Office working together. Each company points fingers at each other and refuse to work together to solve the problem. So we the users pay the price.
Reader and Acrobat are not the only programs having problems working with Microsoft.

  • Long connection times to Leopard server using ssh and screen sharing

I'm experiencing long connection times when using ssh (30 seconds, or so, before password prompt appears), and screen sharing (upwards of 5 minutes before display opens). Both the server and the macbook pro I'm connecting with are on the same LAN, with the sever connected by wire directly to an Airport Extreme, and the MBP connecting via wireless.
Anybody have any thoughts as to what's causing the long delays in connecting?

A ping goes rather quickly, and the TNSNAMES.ORA file already contains the IP address. I have other software that connects to the Oracle server just fine without a long delay. I am not sure if this other software uses ODBC, it is a package software. I was begining to think I might have miscoded the connection in the VB program?

  • Problems connecting video and screen sharing

see the leopard iChat forum, I moved it to there. thanks, its called Another Video and screen sharing connection problem

    Hi,
    Welcome to the  Discussions
IS this Linksys doing UPnP ?
This is set in the Administration page of the set up pages.
Also in the Security Page disable the Anonymous Ping Blocking.
If you set UPnP then make sure any Port Forwarding, Port Triggering and DMZ is disabled.
These last three use NAT more strongly than UPnP and NAT can be an Issue.
The Appleu3test accounts are effectively on Public IP address so Lees/no NAT

  • Problems using iPhoto on an iBook G3

I have an iBook G3 with OSX 10.4.2. Frequently (two times!) it start erasing all the icons of my library of photographs, then, if I recharge the pictures in the library, I can see the icons again but near of it there is an "empty" icon with the same name. What happens? Maybe the G3 doesn't support the OSX or iPhoto 5? Thank you.

    Valerio:
Did you rename or move any files/folder within the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder?
If the library rebuilding by iPhoto doesn't help try rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager. It creates a new library by copying the files and necessary data from the old library. This will create a new database file which may be damaged in you current library and causing the problem. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
Good luck. Post back if this doesn't help and we can work out a workflow to create a new library from the original files in your current one.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Problems Using iPhoto 11 9.4.2 OSX 10.8.2

    1.     Why do photos emailed from iPhoto turn up in my 'inbox' instead of in my 'sent' box in mail?
    2.     If you misstype your password/username when sending images from iPhoto, it will not allow you to try again.
    3.     If you select a photo in iPhoto and click on Edit, nothing happens - no tools.   If you go to iPhoto in top bar and to Edit, again there is nothing you can use to edit with.
    4.     Will Apple fix iPhoto so that you can save images directly to iPhoto from emails?
We will start with the above 4 problems.

    1.     Why do photos emailed from iPhoto turn up in my 'inbox' instead of in my 'sent' box in mail?
because you are not using mail as your e-mail client - you are using iPhoto - if yo want mail (thich I personally recommend) set it as the email client in the iPhoto preferences
    2.     If you misstype your password/username when sending images from iPhoto, it will not allow you to try again.
when using iPhoto as the email client iPhoto preferences ==> accounts
    3.     If you select a photo in iPhoto and click on Edit, nothing happens - no tools.   If you go to iPhoto in top bar and to Edit, again there is nothing you can use to edit with.
if you open an event, double click a photo to enlaege it and click on edit in the menu bar at the bottom exactly what happens?
    4.     Will Apple fix iPhoto so that you can save images directly to iPhoto from emails?
no one here has any idea what Apple will do and under the TOU for this forum fobid speculation on Apple policies

  • Accessing Muse via Screen Sharing has bizarre mouse behavior

When accessing another Mac using Screen Share... built in to the Finder, I can see Muse, but any attempt to edit a page displays strange mouse behaviour. Specifically, clicks down and up seem to be mis-interpreted as clicks held down by Muse, and only by Muse. Other apps don't show this behaviour. 100% repeatable, and easy to reproduce -- just click on an object and try to move it and you'll see how it's tough to unclick and stop dragging things around. Seems to be specific to Muse.
Using Lion on local machine, Snow Leopard on remote computer running Muse. Licensed on both locations, just sharing to give design advice.

    See this at MacFixIt.
...and 'Google' for, say, "screen sharing black window" and you'll have some suggestions.

  • How to use Mac *encrypted* screen sharing from iOS

    Hello,
I have a Mac Mini running Yosemite Server that I can access from a remote Mac, using Screen Sharing app. I have selected "Encrypt all network data" and this works very well.
Now I'd like to do the same thing from my iPhone or iPad (both are running iOS 8): access my Mini in the same way I already do from the remote Mac. But I want my connection to be as secure. All data must be encrypted between the Mini and my iOS device.
What is the best way to achieve that? What are the best iOS apps? I've tried some VNC apps but they don't seem to manage encrypted sessions. Did I miss a subtle setting, either on my Mini or on the iOS apps?
    Any help is truly appreciated.

    Hello,
I have a Mac Mini running Yosemite Server that I can access from a remote Mac, using Screen Sharing app.
