Problems using Lacie drive as scratch disk
I'm trying to capture footage into FCE and saving the project to the external Lacie drive and i keep getting this timecode error and the recording stops. It seems like it's putting timecode breaks where there aren't even cuts in the footage. I've searched around and found other people with the same problem but can't find an answer. I'm using this professionally and am under a deadline! Please help!
Thank you for this suggestion...I recently purchased a new system and upgraded to FCE 4; never had this problem with version 2.
In my case, I was trying to capture to an external Maxtor drive from a Canon GL 2. Simply capturing to the internal drive (something which Apple, curiously, advises against) solved the problem, and I didn't have to remove the external drive. It's a kludge, since I'll have to manually move the footage over to the Maxtor, but it's an effective kludge.

Photoshop 7 will not recognize my fire wire drives as scratch disks
Photoshop 7 will not recognize my fire wire drives as scratch disks.
Using Photosop 7.0.1 & Mac OS X Tiger on G4 Tower with AGP Graphics.
Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance,
TomThe drives need to be formatted as Macintosh HFS+ Extended (not Windows or FAT32, for instance), and you must have full read/write permissions to them.
Otherwise, Photoshop will not let you select them as scratch disk drives. Of course, formatting will completely erase the entire drive, so if you have anything on them you need to keep, you'll need to back it up first.
If necessary, do a Get Info (Command I) on the icon of the drive in the Finder and check "Ignore Ownership on this drive"; but first the drive needs to be formatted as Macintosh Extended. -
External USB 3 Hard Drive as Scratch Disk
Hi All
Just wondering is it OK to use a External USB 3 500 GB Hard Drive as Scratch Disk. I have USB 3 ports on my PC and have internal hard drive also, but would it be OK to use the external drive as a scratch disk
Thanks in Advance
GedPerhaps you could do some benchmarking.
There are programs that can measure your drive's capability, or you can just copy a few big files to it and see how long it takes.
I suggest that if it can't reach a majority of 100 megabytes / second throughput for a sequential read / write, then it is probably not a good candidate.

Hardware: SSD drives and scratch disks
Hi,
I am building a new system for Photoshop. Two quick questions:
1. I note in Adobe's system reqs it says Photoshop cannot be installed on flash-based storage devices. Does this include SSDs? Is there a genuine problem here (i.e. if my application drive is an SSD the PS won't work)?
2. I have not previously had a so-called "scratch" disk so I don't really know what it is or whether I need one, or more than one. What's the general advice here? - separate drive to the PS application drive? also separate to the Windows drive? How big? Will an SSD be a good choice for a scratch drive?
Thanks in advance,
AlastairG'day,
In answer to your query SSDs work fine to install cs4 on bar the following I'm having.
I've built a new system using ssds.and is working fine bar one problem
Specs of the system is
I7 920 cpu, Asus P6t se mb, 12gb ram, 128gb ssd, 64gb ssd, 4gb raid 1+0 array onboard, nvidia geforcegtx260. I use the 128gb ssd as the os and programs drive. The raid is the data drive. All works brilliantly except when I set the 64gb ssd as the scratch disk the following happens
"Could not open a scratch file because the file is locked. Use the 'Properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file."
I hit OK and get this error -
"Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked. Use the 'Properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file."
Pressing ok then shuts the program and I need to reset cs4 prefernces and then it all works fine. OS is Win7 64 bit.
Now I have just got to try and fix this problem Anyone got suggestions?
Cheers
Onslow
Hmm, seems to have stopped doing this now after resetting the scratch to the ssd and then rebooting. All is now fine and wonderfully quick. -
External solid state drive for scratch disk?
After doing everything i can find to optimize my hardware/software for doing 3D animation in Ps Ext CS6. I still cannot render an animation to video using the Ray Traced Final setting. (Ray Traced Draft, no problem.) The last time I tried (after repairing disk permissions), at least Ps did not crash and give me the same old crash report (Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x00000007a0020000). This time I just got an error msg that my request could not be completed. (Progress?) Checking Activity Monitor, I could see that my available RAM, which was 13 GB when I started the render was now less than 1 GB (761 MB).
So, I have come to the conclusion that my 16 GB of RAM and 300 GB available for virtual memory on my HD is not enough for rendering the type of 3D animation I am trying to do. Would you agree? Also, I have read it is not good to use the same HD your program is installed on for a scratch disk, so I am considering getting an external solid state drive to use as a scratch disk.
Whaddaya think? Does this sound like a good solution for me?
Thanks!

Gunn GraphicsChris, here is the most recent one from right after I added the additional scratch drive. Thanks for taking a look at it!

External Drive Space, Scratch Disk and other things...
Hello,
I've been editing my first feature on FCP 5.1.4, I have an Intel Mac Pro.
All the footage (shot with a Panasonnic HVX200 using P2 Cards) is about 500GB and it's stored in two different T-Bites for safety, one of which I'm using for editing.
Since I started editing, I've made the mistake of changing the Scratc Disk a few times with the result that some of my Media Files are now stored in one T-Byte, and some in the other T-Byte.
I've tried to transfer all existing media files to both the terabytes so that, when my editor starts to really cut together the assembly I've been working on, he won't need both my external drives (like I do now) and, at the same time, I can continue to work on one of the drives.
The problem is that, although I haven't used any complicated effects or other things that would require a long rendering process- only some color correction here and there (to see how things look like) - right now, both my terabytes are practically full and I cannot transfer any media file anywhere because there is no space available.
I'm not sure if I've done something wrong but how much space do you need to edit 500GB of footage into a feature? And, most importantly, how would you organize the editing so that I can have my external drive to work on and my editor can do the same on another external drive and still have the safety of a back up? Are three or four terabytes necessary?
Have I made mistakes in the way I've been saving/storing the project?
I also have a second question:
How do I open a project made in FCP on an Intel-base MAC from a Power PC-based MAC? Is it possible?
I'll greatly apppreciate some hep with these issues.
Paula
Dual Core intel Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)Paula Paula Paula...Man, you have edited yourself into a corner. I am not sure how to tell you to get out of it.
Are you saying that you have the original MXF files on one of these drives? or BOTH? and you are ALSO using them as Scratch Drives? What is going on here?
Here is what you NEED to do. And you might have to get another hard drive to manage this.
-Use one drive for the original CONTENTS and LASTCLIP stuff...the original camera masters. Have them in nice separate folders and on a shelf...in storage.
-Now...you want TWO sets of drives with the same media? So that you and your editor can have the same footage? OK...then you need to have a drive to copy and consolidate all the footage to. So that all of the captured media and render files are on one drive.
-Copy all of this stuff to another drive for the editor. JUST THE CAPTURED FOOTAGE. Keep the original MXF files on the shelf. The render files will differ after time, as he or you will render and those will be on that local drive only, but if you share projects then when you get a cut from the editor, all you have to do is render and you are fine.
HOW TO DO ALL OF THIS? Manage the media and copying and all that stuff...I can't help you there. I don't know how your drives are structured or what is where. This is something you'll have to figure out on your own. Thus the reason for the third drive...to be an intermediate place to work.
I'm not sure if I've done something wrong but how much space do you need to edit 500GB of footage into a feature?
What do you mean by that? How much space does 500GB take? 500GB. Like asking how long is an hour...an hour. 60 min. 500GB is 5000MB. What do you mean here?
If you want you to have footage, your editor to have footage and then there to be a back up, then you need 3 sets of drives...and another set for the MXF files.
Have I made mistakes in the way I've been saving/storing the project?
So far? Yes. Fixable? Yes. Take time? Yes.
How do I open a project made in FCP on an Intel-base MAC from a Power PC-based MAC? Is it possible?
Yes...as long as you both have EXACTLY the same version of FCP. 5.1.4...what have you.

Hello, this is my first post.
I just upgraded from the original 2006 17" Macbook Pro to a refurbished 13" Macbook Pro 2.53GHZ 4GB Ram (2009 model).
I bought the MCE Tech Optibay and installed it (if you dont know anything about it, ask me, its amazing.) So now I have 2x 500GB 7200RPM Seagate hard drives installed.
I am running Snow Leopard, CS3, Lightroom 1.4.
I have the main hard drive set up with Snow Leopard and all the Applications. I keep all my files on external firewire 800 drives, except files I am currently working on.
The second hard drive is set up as a scratch disk for Photoshop CS3 and that is it.
I am looking to upgrade to CS5 and Lightroom 3 here within this month or so. Or if I get anxious, tomorrow, haha.
I want to know the best setup I can do with my current set up with CS3 and for my future setup with CS5.
Any info will appreciated.
-Would some kind of raid set up with my internal drives be better? How does raid work with scratch disks?
-If I upgrade to 8GB memory in my macbook pro, would I even see a difference in performance if I didn't have a scratch disk? Since CS5 and Snow Leopard can use more memory in 64bit.
I think thats all I have on my brain right now. I may have more questions, or I can guarantee I will have more later.
Thanks alot.First the scratch. Like you said, most everyone has a different take on scratch discs but I'd guess you're wasting one heck of a lot of hard drive space using all 500 GB for Scratch, did I read that right? If I did read it correctly YES, partition it and get some use out of it!!
I've got a unibody MBP 2.93GHz, OS 10.5.8, CS3 & PS 5 (running in 32bit mode), and 8 gigs of ram. I've partitioned the one 300 GB drive so 50GB is scratch, the other partition is for OS, & Apps, and documents (images).
I use LR 2 first than export to PS 5 to finish up. My photos get to be 300MB to 500MB in size and both versions of PS work on this setup just fine. Using PS 5 in 64 bit mode is faster opening files but NON of my plugin's are 64 bit yet, that's why I'm still stuck in 32 bit mode.
Not knowing what size or kind of files you work on makes giving advice a bit tough but try setting the status indicator (don't know the right name for it) in the bottom left corner of any PS open file to "Efficiency" and watch what happens when you process your files. I rarely see mine drop below 90%, I've got the usable RAM in PS Prefs set to it's max suggested, cut way back on History and Cache.
Can't wait for NIK and others to offer their plugin in 64 bit, later this year is what I was told.
There used to be an old "rule of thumb" with old version of PS about Scratch disc size. I don't remember exactly but it may have been 3 to 5 times the size of your biggest file??
Good luck, Alan -
Newbie here...do I need to add external drive as scratch disk
With only one firewire port, how would I connect (if necessary) an external drive plus my HDV deck?
Bingo. There are other benefits, too. Freeing up space on your main hard drive ought to keep your computer free of clutter, therefore helping it run faster. OUGHT TO... sometimes with a Mac, it doesn't really matter. Depends on what you're running, really.
But I use two external SETA hard drives all the time. One 250G and one 150G. One is my scratch disk, and one is my Time Machine. There's a little extra bonus to using an external, too. An external allows you to transfer quicktime files and other PC-compatible movies files to a PC!! That means that you can then store any extra stuff on a PC, too, as a further backup. I do that as well.
Hope I didn't confuse you too much!

Boot Drive(s), Scratch Disks, eSATA chipsets
It was explained I shouldn't have posted this where a question had already been answered. Let me try again...
REPOST (thanks Hatter, but have further questions):
Setup:
Mac Pro
16GB RAM
Apple RAID card
Sonnet E4P PCIe eSATA card (dedicated channel for each of the 4 ports)
INTERNAL 2-150GB Velociraptors RAID 0 Boot array.
INTERNAL 2-750GB in RAID 0. (7200RPM Hitachi's)
EXTERNAL 5-750GB (7200RPM) RAID 0 in Sonnet Fusion D500P case
Backup drives:
Time Machine:
EXTERNAL 1TB Barracuda in OWC eSATA enclosure with Oxford chipset
Personal data/media:
EXTERNAL 2nd 1TB Barracuda in identical OWC enclosure (Mercury Elite-AL Pro)
Personal data/media (2nd backup)
Seagate 1TB FreeAgent Pro (using Firewire because Sonnet states eSATA can be untrustworthy due to chipset utilized)
Boot drive clones using SuperDuper:
250GB WD SE (1st)
400GB Simpletech (2nd)
Other drives:
500GB WD MyBook (firwire)
400GB Maxtor (USB 2.0)
Questions:
1) Am I getting the best use of my Velociraptors being used in RAID 0 (I have two clones of this array; want speed-quick boot-rapid program response)
2) I'm using the 3.75TB Fusion D500P for RAID 0 video capture via firewire from camera (SD and HD video). Is it correct the firewire MyBook and USB 2.0 Maxtor are no optimal for scratch disks? I should use a RAID array and if the drives are big, partition them? I'm having trouble finding info on this, but I suppose the place to look is the Adobe and Studio Pro forums. I have Premiere CS3, but think I'm going to rely more on Final Cut Studio 2...it's 64-bit. Still learning how to get optimal performance out of Photoshop.
3) Hatter, you mentioned "would be 'concerned' about even Oxford 934 and eSATA off 2-channel Sonnet Tempo. Same with Seagate. And MyBook, FW and USB2. I have some older FW drives, for backup and archive and rarely connected except to make a backup."
Why would you be concerned about the OWC eSATA drives with the Oxford chipset? The Barracuda drives are enterprise drives. BTW, the Sonnet E4P has a dedicated channel for each of the four ports. Are you saying there are reliability issues with the OWC drives and I suppose the concern for your (and mine) MyBook, Seagate, etc drives is that they are not enterprise grade and thus less reliable.
Also Hatter (this is a whole different story), regarding the NewerTech kit, it's my understanding the two SATA ports on the motherboard are not supported by Apple. While they do work for some applications, they do not work with Toast and Blue-Ray drives for burning Blu-Ray discs. You have to use finder for that I think. Apple should release a firmware update and support these connections!
Thanks!I meant to reiterate the 3.75TB Fusion D500P is connected via eSATA, the video camera is connected via firewire.
Thanks. -
Greetings all!
I am AGAIN having problems with my Lacie Big Disk. This thing has caused all sorts of problems on three separate occasions. This morning when I went to do some work in FCP, I noticed that I kept getting the "beachball" everytine I did anything. I went to the finder, and accessed the Big Disk from there, and got the same problem.
In the past Lacie had me do some things like repair permissions, etc. I did those things with no change. I then tried connecting through a FireWire 400 port. I did not have any free ports, so I connected to the port on another external drive. This seemed to work. However, when I did this, I suddenly got some REALLY strange results. All the files on the other drive kept failing! If I tried to open a photoshop file, I got errors. If I opened a DVD SP file, I got errors.
I turned off the Lacie drive, and suddenly the files on the other drive opened fine again!
Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?One suggestion is to get a PCI firewire card, and create another bus.
I did not have any free ports, so I connected to the port on another external drive.
Some drives don't play well with other firewire devices, and you seem to have every port involved with one or more devices -
Flash Drive as Scratch Disk - Expresscard
I have an internal expresscard 16 GB flash drive and Photoshop doesn't see it. So I can't select it as a scratch disk. Is there a workaround to get PSCS3 to see this drive? or did I just waste my money?
I don't know that hardware, so will GUESS it is a USB device
I think there is a device identifier code in the hardware to tell Windoze the type of device... and a "memory stick" type of device has a different code than a hard drive
You might enter some likely search terms here http://search.microsoft.com/search.aspx?mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US to see if there is some way to make Windoze think a memory drive is a hard drive
Or, if there is an article that explains how to use what you have as a scratch disk -
Has anyone tried this and if so, was there a noticable difference in photoshop doing its various tasks? Again, its a imac early 2008, and I looking to use a firewire to attach a Solid State Drive to use as the scratch disk. I am maxed out a 6gb ram.
ThanksCanadianBear
KiltedTim's right of course. You seem to have adequate RAM.
I would ask you if this sluggishness is NEW? If so, what has changed that you can identify? Updates or upgrades? New software etc?
What kind of tasks? Any operation on a big image is processor heavy, but you have the RAM so scratch disk is the right direction. What is your 'History' preference in PShop? Keep that as small as you can afford to. Save often. Keep as few images open as possible - each image has its own History. Save often.
For scratch info on an image, choose that from the 'triangle' pop menu at the bottom of the document window. That seems a good way to tell if scratch disks are even at fault.

hello!
(sorry if my english is bad, I am a russian guy)
some time ago I faced a problem using my cd drive (I have an oldie iMac and mac os 9.2.2).
every time I was feeding a cd to the drive, this computer was telling me something like "cannot intialize the disk"
then I looked through "mac help" and found out, that I have no "high sierra access " file from "extensions" folder.
And there was no help for me from russian service centers. tht guys told me something like: "chill out punk and install os x, because os 9 is a bag of crap"
Ill be very glad if some of you wil send me that file at {post edited by moderator}

Problem with Lacie Drive.
I go into time machine and it is not being recognized.
It comes up in the Mac HD folder under shared but it says it is not connected. I followed the steps Lacie gave for installation and it still doesn't work.
Someone please help. I contacted Lacie weeks ago and have still yet to hear back.I had the same problem after the security update. Did all the usual things: repaired permissions & verified hard drive from the start up cd, did the fsck -y repair all for nothing. Then I read somewhere on this forum about another type of check, short of zapping the pram, or what ever it is called in Intel Mac's. I powered down everything and then removed all peripherals from the computer, including the keyboard and mouse. I also unplugged the external lacie drive from the wall. Then I waited 30 minutes. I plugged all but the external drive back in and re-did the permission / drive repairs. Then I repowered the external drive and reattached it. Rebooted the computer and everything loaded and worked just fine. In fact, all applications and anything I do on the computer is now much quicker.

Problem using JDBC driver with JSP
Hi, I am trying to connecto to my mysql server via a JSP page, but it seems that there is a problem with the driver call or something in my configuration that unables me to connect. I have the mysql-connector-java-3.0.7-stable driver.
This is how my classpath looks like:
CLASSPATH=/home/hooper/Sources/mysql-connector-java-4.0.7-stable/lib:/home/hooper/Sources/mysql-connector-java-3.0.7-stable/com:/home/hooper/Sources/mysql-connector-java-3.0.7-stable/mysql-connector-java-3.0.7-stable-bin.jar:/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_02:.:/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_02/lib/tools.jar:/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_02
And this is my JSP page code:
<%@ page language="java" import= "java.sql.*"%>
<%
Connection con = null;
String userName = "hooper";
String password = ""; //No password
String url = "jdbc:mysql://localhost/test";
//Load the Driver class file
Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
//Make a connection to the MySQL database
con = DriverManager.getConnection (url, userName, password);
out.println ("Database connection established");
if (con != null){
//Close the connection
con.close();
%>
And this is the error I get from Tomcat4.1.18:
HTTP Status 500 -
type Exception report
message
description The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request.
exception
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
root cause
javax.servlet.ServletException: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
I hope someone can help me with this.
Thanks,
LuisHi..
Try using this way
String userName = "hooper";
String password = ""; //No password
String url = "jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test";
Class.forName("org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver");
try to download the driver for mysql and add it to your classpath
Hope this works
