Problems using printer via NetCenter drive

Hi!
I recently purchased a MacBook and a Mac Pro, and would like to use my networked printer with them, but it is not working.
I have an Epson Stylus Photo R300, and it is connected to a Western Digital NetCenter WDXE5000KS via USB, which is hooked to a NetGear GigaSwitch, which is hooked to a LinkSys wired/wirless router (has cable modem hooked to it). I know, wow...alot of fun. There are 3 XP systems on the NetGear, one Mac Pro, and then the MacBook via Airport on the LinkSys via wireless.
I used the Printers Utility, and clicked "add" to add a printer. I then clicked the "more printers" option at the bottom of the resulting screen, and chose "Windows Printing" from there. The menu/box below that then showed the networks, and I chose the WORKGROUPS choice, which the Epson is on. I clicked "choose" and bingo! the netdrive name came up, as I named it, and then when I chose it, the printer showed. I selected the printer, and then used the bottom menu on the dialogue to select my actual printer model.
I was also prompted for the network's user name and password, which I entered, and saved in the keychain. When I try to print though, I get either a "NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY" or "NTSTATUS_BAD_NETWORKNAME" error. I thought the "..network name" one might be due to a misname by the printer setup, so I checked htigs out, and sure enough, it was (sort of) misnamed. Instead of "STYLUS-PHOTO-R300", it was simply "Stylus-Photo-" I fixed that and tried again, and still get both errors.
I have restarted the netcenter drive, the printer, and the computers. I can print from any of the XP computers.
Anyone have any ideas? I am (was?) planning to buy a MBP once the Merom chips get in there, want to get rid of the rest of the XP 'puters (except one for gaming), but I will require the use of the printer, and it would not be fun to have to fire up the XP machine every time just to print stuff.
Thx in advance!
nikki
mac pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I used it because that is what the NetCenter sintructions said to do...since it did not work, I am assuming I did something wrong.
I am (mostly) new to OS X, and knowing what procedures to follow to do this any other way is something I am unfamiliar with. I tried following instructions form Apple help, and it said same thing.
If you wouldn't mind explaining how I would use the Mac Drivers, IP Printing or Cups, I would love to try it, and would report back here as to what worked, so if any other unlucky, uninformed person finds themselve sin the same boat, at least there will be something for them.
Thx!!!

Do you get this window when you hold down the Command+Option keys and launch iPhoto?
If not then you're not holding down both keys long enough.

  • Problem consistently printing via new (summer 2011) AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION and Brother wireless printer (model HL5370DW). What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help you folks can offer. I'm a newb here and will try to offer as much detail as I can about the dilemma at hand.
Scenario: Home network has been recently set up for wireless internet access via NEW Airport Extreme Base Station (purchased September 2011). Units accessing the network include: 2011 Macbook Pro, 2011 Macbook Air, 2007 Macbook, 2009 Macbook Pro, 2 iPhone 3GSs, and a 1st-gen iPad (and a partridge in a pear tree AEBS is configured to run WPA2 encrypted network, as well as a WPA2 guest network. I am attempting to yoke a BROTHER HL5370DW wireless B or G/ ethernet / usb-capable printer to the main network such that any and all units can print wirelessly or its equivalent (i.e., via printer hooked to AEBS through USB hub)
Problem: Despite configuring the Brother printer to recognize the main WPA2 network I created, I am unable to get wireless printing to work. My workaround was to physically connect Brother printer to AEBS via USB, specifically using a Belkin USB hub (after all, I wanted access to usb drives, as well as the printer). This workaround works ONLY SOME OF THE TIME. Generally, after a fresh boot of any computer or after a restart of the AEBS, any given computer will be able to print (i.e., any computer wirelessly connected to the main WPA2 network recognizes the printer). HOWEVER, at random times, printer access is gone (as is access to USB drives connected to AEBS's usb hub). Wireless networks are still up and running when that happens. IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE USB HUB's devices (i.e., printer and usb drives) to ALWAYS REMAIN AVAILABLE AS LONG AS THEY STAY CONNECTED TO THE AEBS? In other words, what accounts for the intermittent loss of the usb peripherals?
Sometimes, I just shut the airport off on whatever computer is having this problem, and the problem goes away. Sometimes, the problem is present across all computers in the house, sometimes only a few are affected. I can ALWAYS see the AEBS in the Airport Utility if the AEBS is connected to the particular computer via ETHERNET CABLE.
    My theories:
    - true wireless printing (i.e., without usb hub workaround) doesn't work because the N network somehow isn't backwards compatible with the Brother printer, which, i believe, is B/G. Although...isn't Wireless N networking supposed to work with BG devices? I did find a thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2570774?start=0&tstart=0 ) that explains some of the particulars of WPA2 encryption and Wireless B/G issues, but it was beyond my level of comprehension (I'm a psychologist, but not an Apple Genius
    - The usb workaround is only intermittently viable because of some flaw in the Airport or Airport Utility that causes dropouts to happen when a Macbook Pro or Air's lid gets closed or one gets opened after having been at a different network (e.g., at my office).
    QUESTIONS:
    - Should I try to use my old router (7 year old Linksys WRT54G) as an access point and connect the Brother printer to that G-router? How do I do that?
    - I wouldn't mind just relying on the usb hub method if I could just insure more consistency (i.e., no random dropouts of peripherals). How could I do this?
    Rule out:
    - wireless printing works on my printer - it was being recognized back before the AEBS. I had the Linksys router running a WEP network and had the wireless printer talking with no cables to the router and the computers. (I just don't want to revert to using WEP encryption given its lack of security and my trying to protect HiPAA related health information on behalf of patients)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

    13 ASCII characters = 104 (aka 128)-bit WEP
    encryption
If turning off WEP works, then you just need to
provide the cameras with the "Equivalent Network Password".
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual
standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit
WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain
algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords
(or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use
of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than
lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different
vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX
key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be
hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice
    versa.
You may find the following article helpful:
    - Apple article, especially the part about
    "Third-party client to Airport".
Brilliant idea about trying the system with No encryption on... that DID solve the problem... almost.. once I turned off the encryption option, and restarted the Airport, I got a dialog box showing that the "Base station needs attention" but it didn't indicate WHAT kind of "assistance" it needed. Nonetheless, I closed out of the Airport program only to find that the indicator light, which had been Green, was now, flashing Yellow and I could not connect anything, including my computer. I opened the Airport program again and found the ONLY way I could get the Green light on was to select some sort of encryption option... then the light would go Green again but my cameras would not hook up again, and when I went back in and ONLY changed the option to NO encryption, I got the yellow flashing light and the "this base unit needs attention" warning...
I think your suggestions are almost on the mark... is there any way of reconciling the WEP coding between the cameras and the Airport??? Or turning off the encryption option and STILL have Airport work?
Thanks again for your help and suggestions... I really appreciate it.

  • Using Printer via Time Capsule for Windows

    Hi,
Could you please guide me how can I use printer connect to my time capsule from windows based PC. I can do it from my mac but unable to print it from Windows PC.
I have also downloaded Bonjour, it detects my HP printer 1018 but when it comes to driver it is not able to locate also tried so many different option for the driver but unfortuntely no luck so somebody please guide me to print (HP Laserjet 1018 printer) from windows connected via Time Capsule 2TB.

When you setup the printer choose a local printer.. then change the port to TCP/IP and type in the IP of the TC.
Complete the setup.. and choose the 1018 HP printer drivers.
That should be all there is to it.
Download the airport utility for windows and see if the printer is there.
Ensure you have the TC setup in WORKGROUP for file sharing.
Make sure the computer is in home.. not work or public.
Make sure you do not have homegroup activated.
If that doesn't work turn off the firewall and try again.

  • Syncing problems-- using an external hard drive

    Running Windows XP.
I recently transferred all of my music to my external harddrive. Then, when I first tried to sync my iPod touch with it, it wont work. Itunes always comes up with an error saying that it can't be synced and the device has timed out. It also says something like "can't find the drive." I started by trying to sync 6 gigs, and when that didn't work, I moved down to 1.25 gigs and it still wont work. However, I can successfully sync 1 song. I tried that as a test.
Could the problem be from running an external through the USB?
Any other ideas? Thanks for helping

It's possible that running both the ipod, and external usb drive off of the same bus on the computer is causing problems. Is the external drive a usb 2 drive? Do you have any other options for connecting the external drive? Are you using a usb hub or connecting either of the devices through a monitor or keyboard? Have you tried adding more songs to see what happens, at what point the problem occurs? • HP Officejet 5610: Problem Adding Printer via USB

Hello. I am trying to print via USB on a HP Officejet 5610. My Mac has detected it via USB. I tried to add it by "Default Printer." I got the model "HP" but could not find the model "Officejet 5610" for the gimp-print. I tried a few random models to print but none of them work. Could someone help me please? I do not have the installation CD. This is not my house. The person who owns the printer is usually not home and his computer locked.
    Thank you.

Disconnect the printer.  Remove references to it from  print and scan in system preferences.  Remove the HP folder from /Library/Printers.  Reconnect it.  Try again.  It should dowwnload drivers.

  • Using Lightroom Via External Drive

My computer's hard-drive is small and would soon get overwhelmed if I stored my master-images there. My plan is to store my master-images on an external drive.
Here is my planned set-up/workflow: I work with previews in Lightroom, back up my LR catalogue regularly as I exit, and only access my master-images when I wish to export/print/copy an image.
Along with this I would keep a regular back-up of those master-images on another drive.
Will this work? Is there anything I've missed here? I'd appreciate some comment keeping in mind the aim is saving hard-drive space on my computer along with ease and convenience of work-flow. If there is a better way of doing it, let me know.

I am going to assume you are working with RAW images and that these originally were stored on your local HDD and that you would prefer to work with these files on an external HDD instead. You have moved the files to the external drive and now you are trying to clean up your local HDD by deleting the old image files after copying them from the local drive to the external drive but you don't seem to be getting back any of the space on your local drive. Is that a decent summation?
Based on that, the post from 99Jon is the correct approach. Copy the local files to an external drive and then tell Lightroom where to find the images by pointing Lightroom to the directory structure on the external drive using the Find Missing Folder option by right-clicking on the top level folder. This will allow Lightroom to rebuild the links between each image in the catalog and the storage location of the image. If a folder in the left hand Folders panel is dimmed however, you still have a disconnect between Lightroom and the physical file.
If the folder is NOT dimmed in the Folders panel that Lightroom does have a link to the physical file and if you tell Lightroom to delete the image, it will be deleted. Kind of. If you select an image and delete it in Lightroom, the default is to delete the image from the catalog only. You have to specifically select the option to remove the image from both the catalog and the HDD. If you go this route, make sure the folder you are referencing is not pointing to your external drive or that is where you will delete the image from. You can check that by first right-clicking on the folder in the Folders panel and selecting Show In Finder.
Lightroom does not like it when you manipulate files using the Finder but sometimes, it is the best way to do what you want to do. Once you have completed the copy from the internal HDD to the external HDD (you can actually do this from within Lightroom), linked the Lightroom catalog to the new folders on the external drive and confirmed you have all your images linked up then the easiest way to remove your images from the internal HDD is to use the Finder to move them to the trash can. You will later have to empty the trash to regain all of the disk space however. This will clean up the space used by your images but there is also the Lightroom catalog and the preview files that will also be taking space.
The catalog does not actually contain any image data. It only contains references to the locations where the original image and the previews are to be found. There two files of interest here. One is the xxx.lrcat file which is your catalog and the other is the xxx.lrdata file. The lrcat file is your actual catalog while the lrdata file contains your previews. If you have generated smart previews, they will be stored in a file named smart previews.lrdata along with the two other files already mentioned. Finally, there is also a folder where Lightroom stores all of your catalog backups called Backups (my backups folder is actually located in a folder called Catalog templates). Every time you close Lightroom, it will create a new copy of your catalog unless you tell it not to. All of these folders are contained in a Lightroom folder in your Pictures directory (again, unless you set things up differently). You can save some space by removing some of the older backups since Lightroom will not clean that up for you. You may also have some old catalogs out there if you have been upgrading from one release to the next. With each new version, Lightroom makes a copy of your current catalog and then updates it for the new version so you may see some from Version-3, Version-4 as well as the Version-5 catalogs. Old catalogs and their associated backups can be deleted.
I have a small working catalog on my Macbook Pro with about 2000 images. My catalog is pretty small (about 20MB) but the previews file is nearly 5GB in size. This is where your 1:1 previews data is stored and Lightroom will manage it for you. You can change your preferences to automatically delete them in a few days, thirty days or never. The default is to delete them after seven days (I think) but, if you open an image for which Lightroom does not have a preview, a new one will be generated using the original image data and then applying all of the changes that have been made to the image which are stored in the catalog. If the original image is offline, a new preview can't be made which can cause a problem if you plan was to be able to update your images offline.
This is where the smart previews come in. This must be generated either during import or by selecting the image/images and then using the Previews/Build Smart Previews menu option. These will be stored in the other lrdata file and are actually smaller size than the 1:1 previews you would normally generate. These need to be maintained always as this is really the only way Lightroom will allow you to make changes in the editor to image files that are offline but, this will require HDD space on your internal drive as will the lrdata file containing the 1:1 previews. The one caution I would offer is not to remove anything from the trash until AFTER you have restarted Lightroom and verified all your images are still intact and none of the folders are dimmed in the Folders panel. Only then will emptying the trash by safe to do.
Not knowing how big your image files are, I can't advise how much space you can get back. My RAW images average about 30MB each. If I shoot using JPEGS, the file sizes are closer to about 9GB each. While I convert my images to DNG files which can save some space over the RAW sizes, I also save my original RAW image in the DNG so I end up with images files that are often 55MB each in size. If I delete ten images I clear more than 0.5GB of space. so it really depends how big the files that you delete are. Also, the savings does not show up until I remove the deleted images from the trash can.
I know this a whole lot of stuff to wade through but there were a lot of questions being asked so I hope this all helps...

  • Problem using a WD hard Drive with Time Machine

A couple weeks ago I bought a 1TB Western Digital "Elements" Hard Drive and configured it with Time Machine on my MacBook Pro (running Mountain Lion OSX version 10.8.3). The drive was working fine until last night, when it was in the process of backing up and it got the following error:
    Time Machine Error
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.
Now whenever I try to unlock the drive, it freezes up like this:
I've tried restarting the computer and reconnecting the drive several times, and it always gets stuck in the same place. I know my password is correct, because I've tried incorrect ones, and it shakes and rejects them like it should. It's only when I enter the correct password that it freezes.
I went into the disk utility to try to verify the disk, but it gave me these two popups:
I notice it says the drive is almost full, though last night it was somewhere around a third full. I don't know what to make of that.
I had to eject the disk and reconnect it before I could try to repair it. When I did try to repair it, it worked for several minutes, then gave me this:
I notice here that the disk utility looks to have ejected the disk when it couldn't repair it. After that, I don't know what to try.
The one thing I did differently last night that may have contributed to the problem was that before I got the initial Time Machine error, I added a couple of folders to the WD drive and backed up some pictures and music manually. Does Time Machine not work if you have other things on the external drive you're using?
At any rate, I'd rather not erase the drive and start over. Is there anything else I can do at this point? Thanks.

Sounds like your drive may be failing.  Test it on another system first, but if the problem persists, get it replaced under warranty.

  • Problem using image via URL

    Hi everybody
I have a problem with loading images via URL into my PDFs.
    I am using LCD ES2 Version 9.0.1....
I want to create a PDF which loads images from the internet but it does not work.
So far I have tried to add an image or image field to my PDF in the LCD and populate that image using the Object-->Field-->URL: palett. I put the URL in there like this http://www.adobe.com/imageshome/pdfgift_home.gif , tick the "embed image Data" checkbox (also tried with without that just to be sure) and save as Dynamic PDF (I also tried static) but when I open the PDF in adobe reader 9 or 10 or acrobat  9 there is no image showing. I also put the image in a subform and made that subform flowed, as well as the page itself and made the binding global.
I have the form properties - default set to "Acrobat and Adobe Reader version 9.0 or higher", Default Language to JavaScript, PDF Render format to Dynamic PDF.
I also tried using JavaScript events like "form:ready ImageField2.value.#image.href = "http://www.adobe.com/imageshome/pdfgift_home.gif" as discribed here http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/tips/lc_dynamic_images.pdf but that also does not work.
    What am I missing?
Any help would be great and greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks and best regards
    Norbert

As far as I can tell, this use case is not allowed because of cross site references related security concerns. The form can refer to the images stored on the same server from where the PDF is served, but the images cannot come from external servers.

  • Problem with Printing via Wireless Router - Samsung scx4300

    Hi! I need your help:
I'm trying to install a new printer (samsung SCX 4300), via a wireless router (IP:192.168.0.1) but when adding it, it looks inactive and I'm nit able to print. Like if IP address is occupied. I use lpd + Ip address but Print and Fax system doesn't find it. I've already installed the most recent drivers. Any solutions?
    Many thanks for your time!

    HI,
Try here: Mac OS X v10.6: Printer and scanner software
    Repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Problems using iPhoto via Screen Sharing

To deal with our family's ever-growing photo library, I bought a new Mac Mini with a jumbo hard drive. For now, I want to run this as a headless server so that whoever wants to can work with the photo library from whichever of our other Macs is handy, so I've set it up with Screen Sharing.
So far so good, I've copied the iPhoto library there and things seem to work well except for one important detail: When I try to see/edit the detail of any photo, I just get a black screen! Or rather, the iPhoto window contains a big black rectangle where the photo should be. If I touch the zoom control, the navigation mini-view shows up correctly, but I still can't see the picture itself. Oddly enough, if I look at the detail of a video, I can see the first frame (but no more than that, the "play" button doesn't do anything).
I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.7 on both machines, iPhoto '11 (9.1.3) on the server.
I realize that I can access the photo library directly from iPhoto on the "client" using iPhoto's built-in sharing mechanism, but that won't give me full control of the remote photo library.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

Do you see the same if you're working directly on the Mini?  Do you see anything in the middle of the black screen?  Maybe something like this:
If so then that's an indication that the file path to the original file has been broken.
So make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE: You do know that you can connect an external HD to the Mini and let the other computer log into it and access the library on the EHD for full access to the photos, right? However, doing so wirelessly is dangerous due to dropouts that can occur and if they do while the library's database file is being written to the database can be damaged.  So if you're wirelessly connected between the two Macs screen sharing would be the safest way to go. If you're wired then the other method would be optimal.

  • New Imac, has problem using previous portable hard drive

Been using a Seagate portable hard drive on various apple computers for 3 years. had a new one for school this year, and went to use it on our new computer. it does not recognize the hard drive, when you plug it in. did I forget something here?
    Scott

Illaass, yes I have used this drive on MANY apple compuers from Imac, to mac pro's and my laptop at home. it has worked flawlessly on all of them. It is formatted to Mac. appears to be in working order, and works fine when I transfer it back to my laptop. "problem" laptop does not hold Photoshop, and I have work to do.
It appears to be spinning, and cable apears functional.
noyt sure about the last question though? I do not find the drive ANYWHERE on the new computer.
