Problems verifying external HDD in Disk Utility
I initially had a problem with iPhoto suddenly unable to open due to problems with permissions. The original thread can be found here.
After several posters helping me isolate my problem, it seems that my new 4TB Seagate external HDD is not playing nice (cannot create a new iPhoto Library on the external HDD, but I am able to create a new iPhoto Library in my Pictures folder).
Thus I was asked to "Verify" my external HDD via Disk Utility. I managed to, but apparently it was pointed out that it was missing the verification process usually appears in green: "The volume *** appears to be ok."
What could be the problem with my external HDD that is playing havoc with my iPhoto Library?
As you can see that the external HDD have been properly formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in 8 February 2015. It has been working fine as my iPhoto Library destination until recently.
SPECS
Mac Mini (Mid 2011)
OSX 10.10.2
Wait, scratch that, it suddenly started working again.
For some reason, I had to partition it, with one partition a Mac OS partition and the other an MS-DOS FAT... hey ho, no idea.

Problem with External HDD and Disk Utility
I'm having issues with my external hdd, I keep all of my media on it, and randomly it is no longer readable, and doesn't show up on the desktop, it only gives me the options to initialize, ignore or eject, when I try to initialize it and run first aid, all of the options are greyed-out and I cannot click on them. The only option in Disk Utility that I can do is erase. Is there anyway to fix the hdd so I can continue to read and write to the device, I really don't want to lose over 600 gigs of photo's, videos and music.
Since it sounds like the disk is on the way out, I would suggest that you back it up preferably twice.
Once you have your data backed up then and only then you can start troubleshooting the problem.
What model Mac do you have?
How is the disk connect to your Mac?
Does the disk have another type of connector?

Finder crashes when opening external HDD. Disk Utility does not have a problem with it. Any solutions? All my backed up work is in it

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
sudo rm -i /V*/*/.DS_Store
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning. Problems formatting external drive with Disk Utility
Hi all
I'm having some odd troubles with using Disk Utility to format an external hard drive. For some reason, it is giving me all sorts of errors and problems.
Currently, it will let me format the drive in MS-FAT, but won't let me copy certain files to it (it gives an error code). I'm currently trying to re-format the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but the status bar give me the following error and continues to do its 'pondering' instead of giving me a progress bar:
It is currently sitting like that, not doing anything (not even going unresponsive).
What am I doing wrong here?
Cheers.Wait, scratch that, it suddenly started working again.
For some reason, I had to partition it, with one partition a Mac OS partition and the other an MS-DOS FAT... hey ho, no idea. -
Problem with External HD and Disk Utility
Hi. I'm using OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 on a 15 inch MBP Retina. I've been using my 2TB WD My Passport Ultra hard drive since around February of this year. Earlier today when I plugged it in, the hard drive didn't show up in my devices in finder. So, i unplugged and tried again. Still nothing. Then, I went to Disk Utility and found that the drive was there but the partition wasn't mounted and is greyed out. So i tried to verify / repair the disk but have gotten a couple different messages. One being "The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system. The other being "Some information was unavailable during an internal lookup". This message has showed up more than any other. I've been able to get in and look at my files once to try to copy the files from the drive after a message popped up and said it "couldn't repair the disk" but i "could still open or copy files on the disk but can't save changes to files on the disk." But I encountered an error that was something along the lines of "Operation couldn't be completed because the item "..." is in use". But the file i was trying to copy wasn't open or in use by any program. SO, I'm in pretty desperate need of some help with this. I have some very important files on this drive that I can't afford to lose. A lot of it irreplaceable. Any help at all would be very much appreciated! Thanks a lot!
I recall that the old imacs could not use a HD over 130G or so unless they are partitioned. So you may need to make three partitions first with your disk utilities. It should format it at the same time.

Problem Erasing external drive with Disk Utility
I've just purchased some Western Digital My Book Pro 1Tb firewire drives. They come pre-formatted for Windows. When I try to initialize them, Disk Utility returns a failed message & the drive then disappears from the desktop. It is still visible in Disk Utility. I can reformat as a FAT partition but not as a Mac partition. I tried connecting the drive to machine running Tiger and was able to format as a Mac partition. Is there a problem with Disk Utility in Leopard?
I have seen some behavior like this a few times before. When this happens I go to my Linux box and dd a bunch of zeros to the beginning of the drive, this will blow away any partition tables and such.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=100k
This writes 50MB of zeros to the raw device "sdb" (this may be different depending on your system)
I've tried to dd from MacOSX, but for whatever reason it's painfully slow. -
Problem with external harddrive and disk utility
I have just about ran out of room on my iMac G3 so I went to walmart and bought a FreeAgent 320 GB external hard drive. On the bottom it says its compatible with my iMac G3 you just have to format it using disk utility.
So I open up disk utility and I see my hard drive. I click on it and then go to erase so I can format it to work on my mac. However everything on the erase page of disk utility is greyed out and and I can't click on anything.
What do I do? Thanks.I recall that the old imacs could not use a HD over 130G or so unless they are partitioned. So you may need to make three partitions first with your disk utilities. It should format it at the same time.

Format External Drive with Disk Utility, Make it Windows Compatible
I have formatted my external drive using disk utility, and it works great on my Mac. But no Windows PC can read it, and I need to use it on Windows PCs. I tried formatting as MS-DOS FAT but that didn't work either. What can I do?
Thanks so much in advance.I've run into the problem fairly regularly were I format a drive as FAT32 on the Mac, but Windows won't read it. I just reformat it from the Windows machine as FAT32. My Mac always reads and writes to it just fine, so it has never been a problem, just a minor mystery.

Burn ISO to USB or external HD with Disk Utility
I am desperately trying to burn a ISO file to a USB and external HD but Disk Utility does not want to. Instead I get the error message "Could not validate source - error 254". So there must be a problem with the source which is the ISO file.
I already tried setting the Partition Map Scheme to both Master Boot Record and GUID Partition Table. I also formatted the drive to FAT and HFS+. I cannot find the cause of this error. It clearly looks like Disk Utility does not like burning ISOs to USBs or HDs.
However, I really really need to this since I cannot burn ISOs with my SuperDrive which is also a common problem ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1918925&start=0&tstart=0 ) with my MacBook Pro.
I am 100% sure the ISO file is fine. Also checked the SHA-1 and everything else is fine. I should also mention that the ISO file is the Windows 7 RC. So yeah..this time it's not Windows' fault.
I just need a way to install Windows without using the optical drive. I don't even want to think about what I will do when Snow Leopard comes out...Start with the google hits for a search of *error 254 disk utility.*

I have an iMac mid 2010. After Disk utilities said the drive was corrupt, I ran the hardware test (extended) 3 times. No problems. I than ran Disk utility again and got 2 messages in red…keys out of order, and ……Volume corrupt, can't be repaired.
I tried to do a system install, but message said…disk can't be changed. Will a complete erase and install fix this ?
Everything is backed-up.There's hardware and software.
Your drive could physically be in good condition but something has caused the file structure to be messed up (it just happens sometimes). The directory that keep track of files is corrupt. Disk Utility can help determine if that is the issue. In some cases it can repair the problem but it cannot do it to a drive that is being used to boot the system while you are doing that. You have to boot from another drive. Some things DU cannot repair and you need to try a stronger utility such as Diskwarrior.
A failing hard drive (one with mechanical issues) can be a cause of file structure issues but this is by no means always the case. Apart from looking at the SMART diagnosis feature of Disk Utility (and smart isn't totally reliable) there often isn't a way to tell if a drive is failing until it suddenly happens, which is why you need to maintain backups.
In your situation it does sound serious and not just minor directory corruption. You can try erasing (formatting) the drive, You may need to do this if it is really corrupt, in which case there could be underlying physical issues. I use old technology but if you have the patience you can try erasing the drive with the security option of writing zeros once (don't do more unless you are going on a 3 week vacation). This makes the drive not simply assume everything is okay by forcing it try every part of the drive by writing data. If something is gong wrong you may find it marks a lot of bad sectors, or flat out refuses to format. Then you know you need a new drive. -
Checking number of reallocated sectors of HDD through Disk Utility
My macbook was purchased in 2008. Yesterday I checked number of reallocated sectors of HDD through Disk Utility. It showed there were no any reallocated sector. That seems strange, I didn`t renew my HDD since 2008. As for reallocated sectors, can I rely on Disk Utility or I need to download additional software?
Disk Utility doesn't keep track of reallocated sectors (bad sectors) since they are handled by the harddisk (the firmware of it).
You have to use a third-party SMART tool like this one http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/14825/smartreporter

The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer problem with External HDD
Hey Folks!
My 500 GB LG External Disk was working until today in the morning than I have went to University and came back this problem appears when I plug my HDD in. It is formatted in MacOS Journalled and when I plug it in it spins up and gets power, than gives me the error. I have tried with another Macbook gives me the same problem. The data in there is extermely precious for me since all of my pictures are in there. I dont care about the HDD it self but the data. Is there any way to rescue my data, I am freaking out right now. Here is the info of the hardisk from disk utility:

The hard drive is damaged; or,
the USB interface is damaged; or,
the cable connecting the drive to the interface is damaged; or,
the USB cable connecting the drive to the Mac is damaged (not very likely).
Connect a known-good device with the same USB cable to the Mac; if it works, eliminate 4. Connect the drive with a different USB cable. Same problem? 4 is out for good.
Open external enclosure. Extract drive and try it in a different enclosure, with a different cable. If it works, eliminate 1. Same problem? Drive is damaged.
If the drive is damaged, you can try to recover data from it using various tools, such as
TestDisk/PhotoRec
<http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk>
or ddrescue or dd_rescue. These are CLI tools; they require a bit of experience to use. There are some GUI tools, such as ProSoft's Data Rescue or Seagate File Recovery (and others), but none are free. If you choose one of the latter, try the demo first, to see if they can recover anything at all.
My bet is that the drive is damaged. But maybe you're lucky and it's only the SATA cable. -
Problems transferring Backups to new External HD using Disk Utility restore
I'm having issues using Disk Utility to transfer my backups to a new disk.
I am transferring data from a 250GB external harddrive to a new completely zero'ed 1TB Iomega external harddrive. Both Harddrives are connected via USB. On my old 250GB HD i have a few folders containing about 100GB of data (raw video footage) that are not in the "Backups.backupdb" folder.
I follow the tutorial in item 18 of the FAQS on this forum exactly (except i didnt check erase destination) but i get an error message each time after about 3 minutes:
"Could not restore - Operation not permitted"
This is what my log says:

I can see from this that it is having issues with a file in the destination:
/Volumes/Untitled/Backups.backupdb/Mac/2009-04-15-054708/Macintosh HD/Applications/Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional/Acrobat Distiller 7.0.app/Contents/Frameworks/AdobeACE.framework/AdobeACE
This file is in the first Backup i ever made and all subsequent backups. So i went and looked at this backup through the time machine application and deleted this file from the backup and all subsequent backups. However when i then did the restore again i got the same error message and when i looked at the log it was identical except it had issues with a different "AdobeACE.framework" file from another Adobe CS3 program. I dont want to go through and delete all these types of CS3 files from my backups for obvious reasons, i would much rather understand what the issue is and know whether there is a way round it.
It may well be simply because i have not checked the "erase destination" box before restoring but somehow i doubt this is the issue as the new 1TB HD has already been "zero'ed" as explained earlier.
Any help would be appreciated guys.check the box to erase destination. the fact that you zeroed it out makes no difference. this is a known issue and checking that box was recommended for a reason.

Error -50 problems on external HDD
I am having intermittent problems backing up to a USB external HDD (via ChronoSync). After a couple of days of successful backups they start failing with error -50. When this happens I am unable to write anything to the HDD. Restarting the computer fixes the problem for a day or so, but then it happens again. I do not think that there are any physical problems with the drive or cable because the drive is partitioned (3 partitions) and another partition is used by SuperDuper to make bootable backups and has not failed.
I see messages like this in Console which may be related:

Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.
And check here: What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device

Weird Error When Verifying External HDDs
Hello
I'm getting a weird error when verifying my 2 external HDDs. Both give me an "invalid leaf record count" error. But only when I check them with the OSX install cd. If I check them in my user account, they come up OK. Both drives also gave me a "reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect data" error. Disk Utility was able to fix that error, but not the invalid leaf error. I have tried multiple repairs, but DU says the volume cannot be repaired. The other weird thing is when I ran the first repair, it said 1 HFS Volume Repaired and 1 Volume could not be repaired. I have also tried using Disk Warrior, but it gives a "this volume appears to be formatted with a newer version of the OS" error.
Both these drives I had plugged into my mom's iMac (running 10.5--my eMac is running 10.3.9) because I had firewire problems back in June. Did 10.5 modify something that has 10.3 mixed up?
Is there something I can do to fix this or do I need to do another re-install?
Music Luver
"+I hear her playing music+..." ~ Barry ManilowOS X 10.5 does add additional attributes bits to the file descriptors, so using the drive under 10.5 would be expected to add those additional bits to at least the disk directory plus any modified files.
When you then check the drives using utilities created prior to OS X 10.5, those older utilities don't understand the additional bits and report then as errors (DU), of the utilities check first and refuse to run if the disk is tagged as from a latter OS version (DW).
There's a generic warning about mixing older utilities with newer OS versions in Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes.
I'd be ready to shrug the error reports off as spurious; however, that DU "corrected" the reserved bits suggests the drive directories will be rewritten again should you again move the drives to a 10.5 computer. Are you seeing any actual problems wiuth reading or writing to the external drives? If not, write it off to 10.5 settings bits that earlier versions ignore; it shouldn't affect your data.
