Problems video chatting outside of Bonjour!

So, I've seen a lot of topics on this forum with similar problems to my own but I'm having trouble understanding the responses considering I'm only 15. My knowledge about this kind of stuff is limited!
Basically, when my friends try to start video chats with me, the request comes through and I accept. After a couple of seconds an error message appears saying that there was a problem with the connection, whilst on my friend's screen it says that I haven't responded to the invitation. The same happens if I initiate the chat.
Are there any suggestions on how I could fix this?? I would really like to resolve it because both my sisters are heading off to uni abroad and it would be nice to have this form of communication with them. (it's not like the bonjour network stretches overseas. =P)
That being said, video chat works perfectly on Bonjour.
Again, please be simple in your responses! I don't understand half the computer jargon. Though I'll try my hardest to. Thank you for all your help in advance.
Max.

The answer to that could be Yes,
Not likely,
and No.
Most likely it points to a NAT issue.
The Apple test accounts have Public IPs and therefore exclude the use of NAT at their End.
One end without NAT will normally almost always work.
Most domestic devices (modems and routers) can not have NAT turned Off.
NAT is a collective term and not a standard and is done different ways on different manufacturers devices.
Sometimes there is a conflict in the method used.
Of course it could be your Buddy is not set up properly.
So No being able to Contact the Apple test accounts is not proof your end is OK.
But Yes it could be your Buddies.
But also is is not likely the setting at either end but the way they interact.
Now setting both ends to open the ports certainly helps.
Using UPnP to open the ports or rather allow them to be controlled by the app does seem to get around most NAT issues.
More recent devices are getting more and more features as well and these can get in the way on certain connections.

At this stage it would take me several pages to cover all the options.
It is easier if you post what devices you use to connect to the Internet and what you have done to set them up.
If you are past Table 1 try people in Table 2

  • Continuing Problems Video Chatting

So a couple months ago I posted this question: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1129503&tstart=255
Unfortunately, nothing was solved and I still can't video chat.
Yesterday, a friend of mine came over with her MacBook Pro and I decided I would try testing to see if it worked. I videochatted one of the test AppleTest names, and sure enough it worked. I then tried mine, and sure enough it didn't work.
    What could be the problem???

    Through the same Ambit ?

This pic shows no trusted computers.
There are other types of filters on other pages you posted.
I am not sure the Time Zone is right for instance an iChat is Time Stamped.

  • Problems video chatting with Windows users

It seems like everytime I try and video chat with a Windows AIM user there is a problem. Ralph and other are very techy and know how to resolve these issues. Problem is that 99.9999999% of te people I chat with are not so the advice to resolve these issues proves to be worthless. However me and this individual were able to successfully do audio chat instead. Often when there is a problem like this do I switch people over to Skype which works far better going from Windows to Mac and vice versa and is easier to use. Generally I think iChat has better video quality over Skype, but only with Mac users.
I know there are others here that also have this problem and for you do I encourage the same resolution as bad as it is, but it seems to be the only way to chat with a non techy person who is on a PC.
    John

    Hi,
Any non Microsoft app on a PC has to allowed through the Firewall as a Exception  (Or at least since Service Pack 2 for XP when Windows got a firewall).
In XP it goes like this
Open the Control Panels (I prefer the classic view)
    Open the Firewall
    Click the Exceptions tab
In the new window click the Add Button
Navigate through Program Files to the AIM Folder and the relevant AIM#.exe to allow the app itself. (#  is the Version Master number)
Back in the Exceptions window also Allow UPnP
    Enable UPnP in their Router.
I am not sure it is that different in Vista or Window 7
If there router does not have UPnP then open port 5190 and 1024-5000  (AIM video does not use all of these they are there to spread the load)
They would have to do similar things for Skype (although like AIM it has Fall Back ports below 1024 for logging in and Text Chatting that get around the firewall issue) other IM apps and On-line Games.
Of course if they are using some third party Firewall they would have to do the work there.
    Audio Chats V VIdeo Chats
Both apps use the same ports when it comes to Audio and Video Chats  (Tend to be the iChat ones)
I believe AIM still uses 4 ports (from the 1024-5000 range) for VId In, Vid Out, Audio In, Audio out, much the same way iChat 2 and 3 did.
It may pay for you to go to iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth limit and try either 500kbps or 200kbps as the setting.
In earlier version of AIM (5.5 anbd 5.9) it was possible to reduce the Video quality at the AIM end (less frames per second) which allowed "Space" for the Audio part.
AIM 6.x onwards does not have this and the Video feed can be particularly Processor hungry.  Your lower setting will be fed back to them and their end will make an adjustment of what can be sent.
Some of this knowledge has taken me since 2004 to acquire.
I can see that applying it might be considered "techy"
I can appreciate that it can be very difficult to persuade a Windows user to change any setting once they have their machine "working" (at least as they want).
I realise this was not so much of a Question as being more of a discussion statement.
I am not sure that there is a real answer other than the one you suggest.

  • Problem Video Chat with AIM

I am having problems trying to video chat with someone on AIM (windows)
When I select video call they receive the accept message and accept.
I get that they accepted and starting video chat but then says the remove user declined.
The remote user says they get a timeout error.
Any ideas what might be the issue?

    Hi,
AIM since they went above version AIM 5.9 has become more difficult.
The AIM on PC person needs to have allowed it as an Exception in the Windows Firewall.
If they are using a version with "Real Time" it seems to do better to iChat if this is turned Off.

  • Video chat UPnP problem

    Hi there,
Since upgrading to Leopard, my wife and I have had no end of problems video chatting to others via iChat. Everything used to work fine in our older 10.4 installation.
When we connect in the morning, the first person to open up iChat is fine. They can video chat with others outside our local network no problem. However, the second person that connects can only text chat, video will not work.
Having read through the threads in here I think I can see the problem, but I don't know how to fix it. That's where I am hoping someone here can help.
When the first iChat client connects, the router automatically allocates a route through the NAT firewall on port 16402, the debug log says:
Mapped via UPnP, port 16402 to port 16402
This is fine, iChat works perfectly on that port configuration.
However, when the next person opens up iChat on the next computer, we get the following entry:
    UPnP: TCPProc begin loop
UPnP eport 16402 already mapped: retry next
Mapped via UPnP, port 16406 to port 16402
    UPnP: TCPProc end
    UPnP shutdown
In this instance the port the UPnP process allocates is above the range that iChat can use, ie 16406. Hence when we try to video chat it won't work.
In a previous posting (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1212655&tstart=0) Ralph Johns mentioned that:
    +You will see iChat 4 uses only 10 Ports.+
+They are similar numbers but start from top Down (16402 being first choice)+
    +(iChat 3 uses 4 from 20 ports bottom up with 16384 being first).+
My belief is that if my router worked the same in the older version of iChat, then the first port allocated would have been 16384, and then next would be 16388 - a port within the allowable iChat range. Hence everything worked fine with two clients.
Does anyone have any idea how I can change iChat to use to allocate ports for the bottom of the range, or adjust my router (a Netopia 3346N-VGx) to allocate UPnP ports in a downward direction?
    Thanks in advance,
    Simon

    Hi,
    That is odd.
I have yet to have failure myself that lists anything other than port 16402.
I use UPnP in my Netgear DG834G
I have one computer in Leopard and the other is in Tiger so although I can view the ports UPnP allocates in my Netgear I can not get two to use port 16402 potentially at the same time.
The next issue is that the Apple Doc says the ports will move down one port at a time.
Now iChat 3 moves up 4 ports at a time if the lower ones are busy.
So we have to ask is iChat 4 using some left over remains of iChat 3 ??
This is because it mat be presuming that 4 ports can not be used (16402-16405) and 16406 would be the next port.
I could do with knowing where you are getting those readouts from ?
The router or on the Mac in Console or Terminal ?
What make is the device ?
UPnP should allow the same ports to be used from different computers
However some devices may allocate a temporary Mapping and do what this looks like.
    It looks like two issues.
    1) UPnP is not working as expected.
    2) Maybe the Upgrade has left part of iChat 3 there and is confusing the issue.
For this go to System/Library/ and show it in Coverflow mode.
Then check the Date Modified dates of Frameworks
    Look inside and check InstantMessage.framework
Then inside that check iChatAgent's date
These should show the date that you installed Leopard.
USe the Back button until you are back at the System/Library
Now check the PrivateFramework folder and then the VideoConference.framework inside that.
Again it should be the install date.
    Edit.
Go to Applications and click once on iChat
Use Apple key and I together to do a Get info.
    Which version is it ?

  • Can't Video Chat or Screen Share with iMessages to iChat?

So I just recently got a new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion to replace my white MacBook running Snow Leopard. I noticed iChat has been replaced by iMessages. All of my other Mac friends still use iChat. I didn't think this would be a huge difference, but I can no longer video chat or screen share with them.
I send them an invite, and they get an IM saying "[account] has sent you a video chat request". I'm registered under my AIM account, and so are they, so that's not the problem. When they send me invites, nothing happens. I get no notification, and it just shows "Waiting for response from [account]."
    So I thought "okay, I'll just re-download iChat from a third-party site".
The download link just takes me directly to Apple's page about Mountain Lion. So that's out.
There's no option in my security on iMessages to override this issue and allow unknown developers. I have "Allow AOL's servers to relay video chats" option selected under Privacy, and that does nothing, either.
What's the deal? Can I no longer video chat (or screen share) with "third party" chat clients via iMessages anymore?

    Hi,
I have tested my Messages (Ver 7.0.1 in OS X 10.8.2) to various versions of iChat (3, 4 and 5)
iChat 3 can send invites and open Video (Or Audio Only) chats to Messages.
The iChat 4 and 5 can Video Chat To and From Messages. (I was using AIM as I have more accounts I can play with)
I have even done 3 way Video chats in both Bonjour and AIM login using Messages and iChat 4 and 5.
I have just double checked between Messages and iChat 4 Offering the Messages Screen to the G4 (iChat 4) and I was successful.
Screen Sharing requires a Random port for the VNC connection that does the "picture" bit.
However if you had it working in iChat then this should still be working in the Messages set up.  (Basically your router is doing UPnP or is an Apple Base Station doing Port Mapping Protocol)
Also iChat will not work in Mountain Lion (even if you grab the iChat 6 version)
Each version is very specific to the OS version it is with.
For instance during OS X 10.4 it got to OS X 10.4.11 but during those same increases iChat got to  version 3.1.9
There was no update to Messages until OS X 10.8.2 making Messages version 7.0.1
Those small changes tend to mean that version 7.0 will not work with OS X 10.8.2  ( or the other way round)
It is all to do with the support apps and frameworks that help the app to work.

  • IChat multiperson video chat

So here's the issue. My brother and my dad both have brand new macbooks both are running the newest release of Leopard and have the newest version of ichat. I can establish individual video chats with either of them. However, when they try to establish a video chat with each other it proceeds as follows, One of them invites the other to a video chat the other hears the invite tone and tries to accept the invite, once they click on accept they both receive a message something like: “that they failed to respond". They can, however, text chat through iChat no problem. Again I have no problem video chatting with either of them individually. And they can initiate chats with me.

Tell us more about the devices (modems and routers) they use to connect to the Internet and how they are set up for iChat ?

  • Gah! Another Mac -- PC Video Chat question

    Diagnosing the following:
    A = AIM 6.8, Windows XP
    B = iChat 4.0.5 (608)
    C = iChat 4.0.7
    A <--> B no problems video chat
    B <--> C " "
    A <--> C argh!
No connection can be established between A & C. As a quick work-around, C downloaded AIM 6.8 for PC onto a virtual PC (is that what it's called when a Mac runs Windows?). Then, A --> C video & audio, and A <-- C audio only, no video.
A downloaded AIM 5.9. Still no connection established with C.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    HI,
EZ Jim (Another Level 4) once ran a Blog on iSight of which I now have a copy and keep somewhat updated.
The Page on this topic is Here
It contains the Quote that is linked to Above (In the "Welcome to Apple Discussions" post)
The whole page dates back to iChat 2 and using AIM 5.5 and AIM 5.9 in some cases.
At one time EZ Jim and I were answering a lot of Posts with "What If your Girlfriend Lives a Long Way Away" sorts of Questions.
This page contains two posts that have been somewhat edited to show Updates.
The first is from EZ Jim and covers all the things that should be done (although somewhat from an iChat 3ish starting point to AIM 5.9(ish) on XP)
The Second post is by another former Regular Poster, James A.Weston who posted on how to allow non Microsoft apps through the then new XP Service Pack 2 Firewall.
It now contains updates to refer to AIM 6.x
I run XP in Boot Camp.
I have a version of AIM for PCs at version 6.1
    For me this works.
For my view point the AIM site then brought out AIM 6.5 next.
In the first link the EZ Jim page contains link to a site that you can download older versions of AIM for the PC from.
I have not tried some of these others.
Some I have not even seen posts here about either so I am not sure all were on General Release.
    The Summary so far is.
Vista can only install an Version of AIM that uses the Real Time Codecs (AIM 6.5 and AIM 6.8 as far as we can tell)
The Real Time Codecs will not allow these versions of AIM to Video chat with Older versions of AIM (5.5 and 5.9 for certain) - or iChat on a Mac or Trillian (An AIM client for PCs) that all use the same or compatible codecs from the AIM 5.5 to AIM 5.9 (iChat 2,3 and 4)
    Other Options.
This pages state a list of apps subdivided into various groups based on function.
    Other Applictaions
The Panel on the left lists the items/apps
The Panel on the right give a bit more info
For Example 1-3 are text based only Third Party IM apps that in some case have Multiple service capabilities
4 Is AIM for Mac on its Own
5 through 8 are other apps that can video and need both ends to get their own Versions (Cross Platform Apps)
9 through 12 are Web browser base sites that do Video Chat by Allowing Flash access to the Camera (It is effectively a Cross Platform Solution)
13 Specifically mentions Trillian as an Alternative to PC users.
I have not heard whether this can be installed on Vista.
Triilian does for PC users what AdiumX and ProteusX do for Macs but does Video chats with the various services as well. (although not cross service chats (MSN to Jabber say) )
14 and 15 are the closest anyone has got to doing Video (No Audio) to an MSN Buddy.
    Summary of Other Options.
It is a question of Cross Platform Apps or Web browser based options.
    (Unfortunately NOT iChat)
In some areas of this I do not yet have complete info about things like Trillian on Vista for example.
    Notes.
My G4/1Ghz Dual processor was bought in 2001 an came with Jaguar and OS 9 Installed.
It is currently running Leopard at 10.5.6
It will and does run PhotoShop CS.
This length of life it not likely to be found on PCs and therefore AIM may not have any real plans to get AIM 6.8+ to work with the Older versions of AIM, despite what the "What do I need for Real Time" message says.
So, Yes, I have some Info on this.
I hope this summary of what it contains helps

  • Why can I video chat with everyone on my list- Except for one person?

Recently, my friend and I have been having problems video chatting with each other. A couple of months ago, we were able to screen share, voice chat, and video chat just fine. I can, and she can too, do all those things with all of our other iChat contacts. Except when we try to do anything with each other, it says "A problem has occurred with iChat". We've tried it multiple times on different computers, internet connections, etc., but it never seems to work. Is there a way that my friend and I can start to video chat and screen share again? This problem has just come out of the blue, and it is really bugging us.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Have either of you changed a Router at all ?
I have some info dating back to iChat 3 listed here
As time and iChat has progressed so has our understanding of NAT (Network Address Translation)
In some cases the way the Device that does the routing at each end does NAT means you cannot get a video connection.
If it was working and now doesn't it suggests something changed.
As changing setting would more likely effect every Buddy at one end it looks more like a hardware issue (at least in terms of the devices functionality)
Make, model and version numbers of any routers may help identify something specific.

  • Video Chat Communication Error - Assistance Needed

I posted this problem yesterday evening and unfortunately I did not receive and replies, I am reposting in the hope that someone on the discussion board might assist me.
I am having problems video chatting with family members ( three seperate locations) ...all of whom are on 10.5 Macs. I have read through the iChat discussions that have been previously posted and have attempted to solve the problem with the suggested fixes...such as setting bandwidth preferences with iChat and Quicktime, turning off file sharing and adding iChat with the firewall option in the Security Prefs. I have a solid 3MB dsl bandwidth. So I am at a loss. I have pasted the communication error if this is of any assistance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Brian,
This Page http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Aolynk/DR814Q/iChat.htm will tell you how to access the device.
Before rushing into the Port Forwarding - check all the menus.
In the Security section that is actually shown on route tot Port "Mapping" in this case it does show "Intrusion Detection" and the basic "Security" although what is shown of the page does not show any help or explanation for these. It might be that these are of pic to the right as the screen shots used are different widths.

  • Buddy won't stick - Audio and Video chat problems

Grateful for advice on a group of problems - possibly related...
    My setup -
    iMac, OS X 10.5.6, iChat 4.0.7
    AIM account
Testing iChat between my iMac and daughter's MacBook.
    Problem 1)
I log in on AIM account - can see status of my daughter who I have added as a buddy.
Daughter cannot add me as a buddy - tried when off and on line. She tries to add my buddy name and it flashes then disappears.
    Problem 2)
Both logged in, I can invite her to join a text chat with daughter and she can respond.
If I invite her to join an audio or a video chat, my screen says it is waiting for a response from <her screenname>, she receives a message saying "<my screenname> cancelled the invitation".
    Other information
I have created a second account in iChat using my wife's screenname and password. Neither of these problems occur. I have compared settings in the Preferences -> Accounts window between the two accounts and they are the same.
All works OK over bonjour, but I need to get this sorted before daughter moves away in a weeks time.
    Grateful for your help,
    Mike

    Hi,
Methods b) and c) should prevent any mispelling of the (Screen) name.
She will now have to check her Block and Allow lists
These are in iChat menu > Preferences > Accounts > Security tab.
    There are several options.
The Allow Certain People options is only active when chosen but will block anyone not in the list (Makes them appear off line but she will need to see if the Off Line Buddies (Show Menu) to see those).
If the Block Certain People is selected then those names are permanently blocked even if they are not in the Buddy List But she would not be able to chat with you and you would not see her as being Online.
If you are set to Invisible then she will get the same symptoms but you will appear in the Off Line List.
It may pay for her to delete her com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist
It is in the Home Folder/Library/Preferences
Drag it to the Trash and restart iChat.
    ON the Modem front.
You have a Router/Modem combined device that is also Wireless.
    There is no other router.
By default most Netgears do UPnP. This means Port Forwarding or Port Triggering that is offered by some is not active (And does not need to be)
On the WAN Page of the set up pages they tend to need to be "Allowed to Respond to Pings on the WAN Port" (this is the Wide Area or Internet side port/socket/jack to the outside world)
On the same Page I would also suggest Stopping the DOS or SPI Filter that is mentioned.
Effectively the Macs should show in System Preferences > Network the IP something like 192.168.0.2 for you and 192.168.0.3 for her and the "Router IP" as being 192.168.0.1 from both. (I say "Router IP" like that as it is in fact the Modem's IP on your LAN)

  • Can't get video chat to work outside of LAN...

    Hello,
I can't get video chat to work.
All computers, LAN and WAN are running the latest iChat under 10.4 (including latest updates).
Within our LAN, via Bonjour, everything is fine.
I'm now trying to set up an offsite Intel iMac (10.4) and I can't connect via video chat with them.
I've had this problem in the past and eventually gave up (so much for "it just works" - I've spent the last 10+ years dealing with Macs and Mac-based networking, I can't imagine "my dad" figuring this all out). Trying again with fingers crossed...?
If someone could help, it'd be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kristin.
The studio router/firewall is a SonicWall TZ 170 Standard.
This router has a static IP.
All suggested ports on the SonicWall are set up correctly to allow in/out from our LAN.
All computers on the LAN have static IP addresses.
Quicktime streaming settings set as suggested.
OS X Firewall on all computers = OFF.
No iChat add-ons on any computers.
    Internet connection speed = 7404 kb/s
    The offside router/firewall is a LinkSys WRT54G
This router does not have a static IP.
DMZ is ON and set to the only computer connected to it.
Computer has a static IP address.
Quicktime streaming settings set as suggested.
OS X Firewall on all computers = OFF.
    No iChat add-ons on computer.
    Internet connection speed = 5116 kb/s
If any more information is required to help you help me, just let me know!

Does the TZ170 have UPnP or Port Triggering then ?
I can not see that it does here
Opening the ports in the manner listed on that link will only allow one computer (IP) to use the open ports.
The Linksys is router and you have not mentioned what the modem is doing at that end.
Why not use UPnP here ? The Linksys does it (on the Administration page)
Most likely this needs the Respond to Anonymous Pings checked on the Security page.

  • Solution to "Error 8" and "Cancelled Invitation" Problems with video chats

We spent nearly five hours trying to video chat two Macs, one a 15" MacBook Pro using 10.5.6 across an Airport Extreme and cable modem. The other a 15" DualCore using 10.4.11 across an Airport Extreme and DSL. One runs iChat 4.0.7, the other iChat 3.x. After an invitation to video chat, we'd get three flashes of the other persons avatar, then a slow fade. The invitation would change to "canceled," and the originating party would see an Error -8 in the Connection Doctor.
I was unable to enter my Buddy in my Buddy List. His name would flash three times and then fade away.
At all times we could text chat, but no audio and no video.
We checked firewalls, ports (we changed to 443), privacy blocks; did restarts and resets. Nothing worked.
…until I deleted my AIM account (actually a .Mac account, but no difference)and then re-entered it. Upon re-entering, all of my information returned and we established the connection on the first try.
    Perfect.

    Hi,
    Also
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2901979#2901979
    And http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page16a.html
In fact Error 8 is anything do do with your ports in the Mac firewall if On, modem, Router, interactions between the two if both devices do DHCP and NAT based thing like Port Forwarding and possibly the ISP blocking port 5060 for SIP/VoIP phone services.
Certain modems like the Thomson-Alcatel Speedtouch range have SIP bound to port 5060. If it has Version 4 firmware it can be Unbound fully, using Terminal, but later Version 5 an 6 firmware can not be fully Unbound.
Effectively error 8 has to be fixed on a Set up basis once you have pinned down where the problem is.
I have hesitated trying to write a FAQ for this as it is so wide in the possibles.

  • Messages problem- no buddies, can't video chat, no status.

    Hi !
I have a problem with messages on mountain lion.
I can't see buddies, can't invite to video chat, can't set up status, show information, show adress book I use my icloud auccount j****@me.com

If you're not signed in, sign in. If you are signed in, sign out and sign back in. If there's no change, continue as follows.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    Back up all data.
    Quit Messages if it’s running.
    Step 1
Hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash (either may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.Messages
    Caches/com.apple.imfoundation.IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent
Leave the Library folder open. Log out and log back in. Try Messages again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder.
    Step 2
If you still have problems, quit Messages again. Go back to the Finder and move the following item from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
    Messages
Note: you are not moving the Messages application. You’re moving a folder named “Messages.”
Test. If Messages now works, delete the Messages folder on the Desktop. Otherwise, quit Messages again. Put back the folder you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place, and continue.
    Step 3
In the Preferences subfolder, there may be several files having names that begin with any of the following strings:
    com.apple.iChat
    com.apple.imdsmsrecordstore
    com.apple.imessage
    com.apple.imservice
Move them all to the Desktop. There may also be a file with the name "com.apple.imagent.plist". Move that to the Trash.
Also in the Preferences folder, there's a subfolder named "ByHost". Open it and do the same thing.
Log out and log back in. Test again. This time Messages should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. You may be able to put back some of the files you moved to the Desktop in this step. Relaunch and test after each one. Eventually you should find one or more that causes Messages to malfunction. Delete those files and recreate whatever settings they contained.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit Messages again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash. Stop here and post again.
If you later decide that you don’t like the results of steps 2 and 3, you can undo them completely by quitting Messages and restoring the items you deleted in those steps from your backup.
