Problems Viewing and Printing PDFs Created from FrameMaker

I got no responses to this issue in the Acrobat forums (I posted 6 days ago), so since at least some of the PDFs were created through FrameMaker, I am posting here to see if anyone in this forum has seen the problem.
At our company, we regularly create PDFs, usually from FrameMaker version 9. In most cases, we have no problems with the PDFs, but once in a while, we are notified that customers get the following problems:
If they try to print the PDF, they see a series of messages which consistently include "The document could not be printed" and "There were no pages selected to print." If they choose a page or range to print, this often works, but certain pages will not print. In one case, I saw a message saying there was a problem with the PDF with the number 14, but this does not always appear.
Often, the pages that will not print, when viewed at a normal magnification, appear as very small thumbnails that look like the dotted line down a black highway. The rest of the pages are at a normal magnification and can be read.
Often, these same PDFs crash when certain bookmarks are clicked.
This always seems to happen when the PDFs are viewed within a browser on our website or in our web-based software. I've been told by our tech group that it happens in other browsers, not just Internet Explorer, and it still happens if they save the PDF out of the browser down to the desktop and try printing from there.
In the cases I've seen, when I go back and look at the original generated PDF file in Adobe Reader or Acrobat (not within a browser), none of these problems occur. Redelivering the file to the web location often fixes the problem.
I've read many posts about this in various locations on the Internet and one in the Adobe Forums, but none seem to come up with the cause to this problem - they just come up with workarounds for printing the file.
One other note - one of our engineers and tech writers found that one PDF with this problem appeared to have Fast Web Viewing turned off, even though nothing was done differently when the PDFs were generated.
Does anyone have any information on what causes this problem and how we can avoid it?
Tammy

I'm not sure why, but my original post came through blank. Here is a
second attempt:

I almost didn't reply to your post because I'm not sure that I am making
anything but a wild guess. But I seem to recall many years ago that
there were some reports on the frameusers.com listserv of some PDF pages
showing up as tiny pages-- similar to what you describe. I'm not sure if
I can trust my recollection, but I THINK the fix was to go into the PDF
printer properties, and reduce the dpi setting from 1200 to 600 or even
300. I don't remember the exact reason, but I think it had something to
do with a problem in the way Windows GDI interacts with documents
containing large-size type (such as 72-point glyphs). Anyway, I may be
remembering it wrong, or may be off on the wrong track altogether, but
it won't hurt to make the change and try. You can always change the
setting back.
And if it doesn't work, consider posting your operating system, Acrobat
version number, and whether or not FrameMaker 9 is fully patched. It
might help someone else chime in with help.

  • Problem viewing and printing PDF files in Preview

    I have a document that was created in Adobe InDesign (CS4) with a photo that was converted to Grayscale from a CMYK image in Photoshop (CS4).
    That document was then Exported from InDesign as a high print quality PDF.
    Now when I open the file in Preview the photo appears on the screen as a "Negative" or "Reversed" image. And if I print the document, it too prints as a "Negative/Reversed" image.
    I don't know if this matters but if I send this document in Apple Mail it too previews as a "Negative/Reversed" image.
    Other that this photo everything else in the document (text and color logos) displays and prints fine.
    Any ideas?

    I have exactly the same problem with PDFs containing bitmaps created by Illustrator CS3 (and CS4) -- the bitmap appears as negative.
    It has to do with the compression method used for the bitmaps in the Adobe PDF creation. If it is JPEG or JPEG2000 the problem occurs, if it's ZIP or no compression, the image is fine.
    If have reported this to Apple as a bug already.
    10.6.2 has NOT fixed this behaviour.

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro XI problems printing PDFs created from AutoCAD.

    Just installed Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and am having problems printing PDFs created from AutoCAD.  Printing other PDF created by MS Word works well.  Had a similar problem in an earlier version of Pro.  The fix I figure out then was to print the PDF file as another PDF.  Using the second PDF to print to a plotter typically worked.  It does not work for Adoabe Acrobat Pro XI.

  • Printing .pdfs created from InDesign CS6

    Hi, I am in charge of creating and distributing my company's interoffice quarterly newsletter. Currently, I am designing the newsletter in InDesign as an 8-page document and am importing our corporate mailing list along with the Data Merge function to personalize the cover of each copy of the newsletter.  When I go the export the document, I only know how to either create a large .pdf containing the 8-page newsletter multipled by the 241 employees equalling approximately 2,000 pages, and I know how to export each individual newsletter into it's own .pdf for a total of 241 documents that need to be indidvually printed.  My question is: how can I streamline this process so I don't have to sit in front of my computer and print out 241 individual .pdfs or change the print range from pages 1-8, 9-16,17-24, etc. for all 241 newsletters? I am interested in creating a process that will print out 241 individual newsletters each with the cover page set to include the name, title and department of each employee.  Thank you

  • Pdf created from FrameMaker book using FDK is of bigger size

    Hi,
    I am new to FrameMaker, when trying to generate a pdf document from a FrameMaker book using FDK, the size of the pdf file created is big when compared to the pdf created using “Save As PDF” from FrameMaker. I have tried setting Named Destinations to false and also “PDF Job Options” to “Smallest File Size”.
    Below is the code we use to create a pdf file using FDK
    //Open the frame book to process document by document
    bookId = OpenFile(strFile);
    /* Get docId in order to set Acrobat Bookmark levels */
    docId = F_ApiGetId(FV_SessionId, FV_SessionId, FP_FirstOpenDoc);
    F_ApiSetInt(FV_SessionId,bookId,FP_PDFBookmark,True);
    F_ApiSetInt(FV_SessionId,bookId,FP_PDFJobOption,6);
    /* Sets "Body" to the highest Acrobat Bookmark level. */
    pgfId = F_ApiGetNamedObject(docId, FO_PgfFmt, StringT("Body"));
    F_ApiSetInt(docId, pgfId, FP_AcrobatLevel, 1);
    F_ApiSimpleSave(docId, name, False);
    /* Sets the save parameters so as to save as PDF and allow user to name file.*/
    params = F_ApiGetSaveDefaultParams();
    i = F_ApiGetPropIndex(&params, FS_FileType);
    params.val[i].propVal.u.ival = FV_SaveFmtPdf;
    i = F_ApiGetPropIndex(&params, FP_PDFAllNamedDestinations);
    params.val[i].propVal.u.ival = (IntT)False;
    i = F_ApiGetPropIndex(&params, FP_PDFJobOption);
    params.val[i].propVal.u.sval = F_StrCopyString ((StringT)"Smallest File Size");
    /* Saves the book and all its components to one PDF file */
    int_SaveID = F_ApiSave(bookId, StringT(strTargetFile), &params, &returnParams);
    /* Close the open files.*/
    F_ApiDeallocatePropVals(&params);
    F_ApiDeallocatePropVals(returnParams);
    CloseFile(bookId);
    Can anyone suggest a way to reduce the size of the pdf file
    Thanks,
    Neeraja

    Are these duplicates side-by-side (e.g. A and then A again) or one after another (A, B, C... and then A, B, C...)?
    If they're one set after another, FM picks up the list of paratags to include in the bookmarks list from the first file in the book, so if this doesn' contain everything, it might help to import the additional formats into that one. Then clear/remove the exisiting bookmarks and only add back the Titles and Heading1 bookmarks (check that the TOC ones remain in the Don't include list).

  • Problems loading and saving pdf files from sites with latest version.

    On my utilities I wish to download and save pdf files of my e-bill.
    Lately when I click on getting bill, Firefox opens new tab and stops.
    with a light message in url place saying "Type a web address".
    To get around this I must do a right click on the save bill and
    select open in new window, then it opens a new copy of Firefox,
    and two tabs, with the second one asking me to use Adobe to see
    pdf file. I tell it to open and then save it and print it from the tab
    that opens with the pdf file in it. This never happened before was
    always able to just click on link and it would open new tab with
    pdf file there.

    Thanks for the replies. I don't think I was clear enough with my question.
    What I want to be able to do is to click on a PDF file in my Firefox browser and be able to save it as an Adobe PDF file, not a Preview PDF file, in any folder on my computer, rather than just the specified default location for downloads. This way I can save, for example, phone bills in the phone bills folder and bank statements in the bank statements folder without having to save them to the desktop, "Get Info" on each, and change the "Open with:" box from Preview to Adobe Reader.
    Fortunately, thanks to Michael's post, I found an add-on from Firefox that allows me to do just that: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636
    Thanks for your help. Now, within my Firefox browser, I can choose whether to view or download PDF files, always in Adobe rather than Preview, and when I save them I get the option to choose the location each and every time.

  • Problems viewing and printing fillable PDFs

    I had made some fillable pdf application forms using Acrobat 9 for Windows (sorry not sure which version).  We sent the forms to some people, they filled them out and sent them back.  When I opened some of the forms (not all), all of the fillable text boxes still looked blue like they were empty, but when i clicked on the text box the information which had been entered appeared.  However, as soon as I clicked on another box, the new box's information would appear and the old box's information would dissappear again.  If I printed this, the printout would look like an empty form.  I tried on a few colleagues' computers and the result was the same.
    I remade the forms in Acrobat X and it seemed to have fixed the probelm, but I recently recieved a form back (on the Acrobat X made form) and it had the same problem.  I have had to manually copy and paste the information into another blank pdf and then save that when this problem occurs.
    I'm confused because it is not happening every time and every application.
    Any ideas?  Did I create the form wrong?  Does it depend on which program they used to fill it out?  (I don't know what program the applicants are using to fill
    them out).
    OS: Windows XP
    Acrobat X - 10.0.01
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Hard to say whether you created it right or wrong without seeing an example but yes, it does matter what they use to fill it out. Some (dare I say most?) third party PDF viewing applications do not handle Adobe forms well if at all.

  • Duplicate bookmarks in PDF created from Framemaker 8

    Hello,
    I'm working on some legacy content using Framemaker 8 p266. Every time I create a PDF, I get duplicate bookmarks. The first set is wrong, and the second set is formatted correctly and contains the right content.
    For example, it basically looks like the PDF is grabbing all of the content from the Table of Contents page, and then listing the correct bookmarks (Section title, heading 1) after that.
    I'm creating my PDF using the Save As PDF option. In the PDF Setup for Selected Files dialog, I do have the Generate PDF Booksmarks option enabled, "Bookmarks Expanded Through Level" is set to None, and in the Include Paragraphs field I have Appendix Title, Head 1, and Section Title.
    I'm using Adobe Distiller XI, maybe that's my problem.
    Any ideas? I would appreciate it.
    Susan

  • Randomly Missing Text in PDF Created from FrameMaker

    This problem relates to a structured FM document, but I suspect it might be a general issue and have posted it here in the general forum for that reason.
    I am generating PDFs that are missing text somewhat randomly throughout. I tried searching the forum for solutions, but none of the suggested fixes worked and none of the posts specifically addressed the issue I am experiencing.
    I am working in structured FM. The templates we use were originally created for FM8. We use both FM8 and FM10 in our work group. We are able to duplicate the same problem in both versions and on multiple computers.
    I thought I had narrowed the problem down to certain paragraph formatting, since it only ocurs in three or four paragraph formats (a bullet list, table text, etc.) Garden variety formatting. But in most places in the document, these formats appear perfectly. The strangest occurence is a single intance where the page number is missing from the footer.
    I thought it might be a font issue, as I've had similar issues in the past. I had a missing font warning in the console, but I am pretty sure that this has nothing to do with it, since they are fonts we are not using and all the other text from the same formats appears.
    I tried turning off "Remember Missing Font Names" in preferences. No help.
    I checked that the fonts are in the local directory and appear as embedded subsets in the PDF.
    I also tried checking and unchecking the "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts" option in the PDF output settings. Also no help.
    The randomness of the missing fonts bewilders me and I've exhausted my own troubleshooting abilities. I would be happy to share a source file if anyone thinks they could help me that way.
    Thanks in advance,
    Douglas

  • View and print PDF differently?

    Hello all,
    I'm wondering if there is a way to create a PDF booklet so that when viewing it, you would see page 1 first, then page 2+3, 4+5, 5+6, etc. as 2-page spreads - BUT, that when printing it, the file would print each page on 8.5 X 11 so you could staple them together to create the booklet.
    I can create the booklet as 2-page spreads, which is what I want, but then when printing it, I can only print the spreads together as I view them, with both pages of the 2-page spread on one 8.5 X 11.
    If this makes sense, my question is whether you can set Acrobat Pro to display the booklet one way, but print another?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

  • Special Problem- Washed out light PDFs created from Revit-  any ideas why?

    This may be a very specialty type question…  I have posted it for my Revit discussion folks… but it is to do with Adobe’s software… so I thought I would try here as well.
    The issue is occurring when creating PDFs from Revit 2010.
    The issue is that when we print to PDF the pen weights that we see when the PDF is created do not match the look of the Revit Pen weights and shades are worse… they are lighter… in both cases they lighten up…  which gives us a washed out drawing…
    Hope that someone has seen this and may have a quick fix…  This is really been a big issue…  and it would be great to have it fixed…
    Hope there are some Revit users on your form… or perhaps someone who may have an idea why Adobe may act so oddly with Revit…
    Thanks…

  • Artifacts when printing .pdf created from publisher

    I have some documents in microsoft Publisher 2007, i need them to be converted to pdf to send to people and for them to be able to print them. but when i convert them to pdf i loose a lot of quality all the sharp edges become blockey and fuzzy and then when i go to print one of these documents i get artifacts around the graphics and the back ground on some pictures that should be coming up white comes out a light blue.
    i have set the conversion to the highest level quality and this helps the fuzzyness alittle but i still get the artifacts
    any one know why this is happening?

    This is what happened to me:
    We are doing a job for someone that uses Publisher.  They gave us some PDF files saved out of Publisher with a Microsoft addin that lets you publish as PDF and has a preset for a 'commercial press'.  I had a look at the files, checked all elements were CMYK, checked resolution of images, checked that text was black only, printed off a digital proof, and before we printed the job did a high end ripped proof.  All looked fine.
    We printed the job and all looked OK, some of the blacks weren't that great though, but still acceptable.
    The next day the ink had dried and all areas in images that were supposed to be black were an insipid grey colour, compared to the bits around them that were for example 100C 100M.  What had happened is that Publisher had performed some extreme under-colour removal, so that anything black was 100K only and appeared weak, but the gradients leading up to it were multi colour and so appeared much stronger.  Of course now when we look at a separation proof we can see what was happening, but unless you check that, you just have to 'know' that you can't use that method of printing from Publisher.  Proofs and Press-pass looks fine, but once dry....  It's an expensive experience for us, as we're reprinting the job for no extra, because it hasn't come out like the proofs we supplied.
