Problems viewing exported .mov file from Mac for viewing on PC

I am working with a reporter who has a PC at home while I am editing a video for her using FCE 4.1 on a MacBook Pro, using HD footage from a Canon Vixia HF20 AVCHD camera. I burned a draft of the video we are working on for her to look at on her home PC, exporting the FCE project as a straight .mov file. But she could not view it on her PC even though she has viewed .mov files on her computer in the past (but this is the first time she has tried to look at .mov file exported from FCE on a Mac). What might the issue here be? Do I need to export the file in a different way? Might she have an older version of Windows Media Player or be unable to view certain versions of .mov files on her computer? Should I hand it off to her instead as an .mp4 file? Any help much appreciated.
Douglas

You'll need to copy the Apple HDV Codec to your MacBook. Since it won't be Intel native (unless you get FCP 5.1) you'll have to force QuickTime Player to run in Rosetta; it should be a setting in the Get Info window for QT Player. You should then be able to view the video (though I haven't tested this myself).
Hope this helps.

Hi, I have problem with importing MOV files from SJCAM 4000. MOV files are in supported formats for Adobe Premiere Elements 11. But if I'm importing MOV file, only audio part is imported, video part is not imported. How can I solve this problem?

    haben
From looking at the specifications of your camera (SJCam 4000), we know already what video compression your camera is using. It is H.264.
A H.264.mov file should be supported by Premiere Elements 11. On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 11 running?
Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer? And, are you running QuickTime and Premiere Elements 11 from a
User Account with administrative privileges? Please go to Premiere Elements 11 Publish+Share/Computer/QuickTime to confirm that you find
presets there for the QuickTime choice there.
What are the properties of these H.264.mov files - is it 1080p30 (1920 x 1080p30)  or something else? Do you know if this camera is recording with a variable or
    a constant frame rate?
Please review and consider and then we will decide what next.
    Thank you.

  • Exporting .Mov files at 24fps for Final Cut Pro 5

I work at an animation production house and we're trying to export .mov files from QT 7.1.2 at 24fps so they won't have to be rendered in a FCP project which is a 720p project with a frame size of 1280x720, we're experimenting with two codecs. We're using Motion Jpeg A and Photo Jpeg, selecting 24fps but for some reason they import into FCP 5 at 10fps. It's as though QT isn't outputting accurate 24fps .mov files. When I export .mov files from FCP they import back into FCP without having to be rendered. What's the difference between the ones exported from QT vs. the .mov files exported from FCP. We're using the exact same settings and files....? The reason we need to use QT to do this is because it needs to be a somewhat automated process (lots of stills to work with) and our PA's are working on Windows with QT only.

You should post your inquiry at Final Cut Pro section for better support. Anyway, Final Cut Pro does not always recognize the frame rate correctly, depending on which application (and possibly which codec) you used to compress video. For example, Snapz Pro X and Adobe After Effects don't get along with Final Cut Pro in this respect. Furthermore, compressing video in H.264 will be a bad idea. So simply adjust the size of Canvas so that it won't cover the whole screen. In this way, you can even replay video on Canvas and even send it for final production.

  • How do i move files from mac mini to external hard drive

how do i move files from mac mini to external hard drive

The simplest method would be to drag & drop the files you want to move to the external drive using the Finder. Just open both the source and destination locations in separate Finder windows.

  • Exported MOV file from Express - what do I compress it as for media???

I exported a MOV file from Final Cut Express. Looks great. Now I need to send it to broadcast - CNN, NBC, etc.
What format should I compress it with Sorenson Squeeze 6? I've tried different presets but want to know what's the best one to use. Please help. Need responses ASAP.

I'm sorry, I meant to write you have to ask the broadcasters what they want. They can have a lot of very different demands.
This is also very dependent of what your material is. Fine, you exported to QuickTime Movie, but what did you export. HD? SD? What specification? If you don't know, open the file in the QT player and report exactly what it says in the movie inspector.
You can put anything on a big enough FTP server provided you have the time and a wide enough pipe. It's probably going to be a really big file or files so you'd better have a really fast connection and/or a lot of time. Sometimes FedExing a drive is faster.

  • I cannot open a .mov file from MAC on a PC

    I have a Mac Dual G5 with Mac Os X 10.4.8 and I was making a short HDV movie(only 4Giga) in FCExpress.
I export the movie in H264 1920 X1080 in the QT Conversion window and save them in a .mov file (with blue QT label).
After saving I can open and view the movie with the Mac, no problem.
I make a copy on a DVD for mine friend.
I will open the movie on his PC but it don't work.
He had a Pentium Dual 840 3.2 Ghz Window XP Pro service pack 1 and 2, 2wDirectx9 2 giga Ram 256 nVidia Ge Force 6800
On the PC we install also Quick Time Pro 7.1 for Windows with register number.
When we activate the .mov file on the PC(.mov file from the Mac) we see the Quick Time window in black or white without image.
We try many times but we cannot find a solution..
To day we buy by the Apple Store QT MPEG 2-Playback Component for PC.

    Dear Sir
I find a solution for the problem.
What you say is correct, it is a codex problem.
    I download a other program Cineform Aspect HD.199 U$.
Now I can open easy everyone .mov file on the PC(.mov files from the MAC).
Mine conclusion: QuickTime Pro for Windows don’t support H264 codex,
and don’t support any .mov file from the MAC !
Apple make big publicity on their website for QT Pro 7 for Windowns.
They say “QT Pro 7 for Windows support H264 codex”.
I try many days with Apple Support team, they don’t find a solution.
Good evening and thank you for assistance,

  • Exporting movie file from iPhoto

I have a Panasonic Lumix that takes both still photos and movies. The movies and still photos are transferred from the memory card to iPhoto. I would like to use some of the movie clips (.mov format) in an iMovie project. I transferred the movie files from iPhoto to an external hard drive by using the File > Export function. All appeared to go well. When opening the transferred file on the external hard drive, the file size is much smaller than one would expect and the cursor goes right from the beginning to the end as if it was a still photo. In the export function box, the "kind" options include original, current, JPEG, TIFF. I chose current. It does not give an option for file size. The movie file opens and works fine in iPhoto but not the same file transferred to the external hard drive. To make matters worse, I deleted many of the iPhoto movie files after transferring them to the external hard drive and so they are lost forever. Is iPhoto not designed to export movie files ? Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance

Is there any way to export an entire album of both movies and photos at once? I want to set the movies to export as original and the photos as JPEG, HIGH, with Metadata. Possible?
No. The export window will only take one set of criteria at a time.

  • Exporting .mov file from CS5.5 Premier Pro for playing through QuickTime Player

    Dear All,
I would most appreciate any assistance on a problem that I am experiencing with a current project.
I have a HD1080i50 project which I have completed editing. The work consists of two video tracks on top of a black video track that presents two identically sized images side by side that run con-currently. To achieve this presentation I have solely reduced the scale of the clips to 44% and then positioned them side by side. After rendering, within Premier, the playback is exactly as I want it and the imagery is sharp and clear. The problems occur when I either try to export the project as a mov. file (to play using Quicktime), or when I export to Encore and produce a DVD. In both cases, the audio is fine but the imagery is slightly blurred.
In the first instance, would someone be kind enough to recommend the optimum export codecs to creat a .mov file for playing through QuickTime?
To date, with earlier projects, I have not experienced this problem. I am obviously doing something wrong in the export settings process and would appreciate it greatly if anyone can advise. Should more info on the project be required to respond, I am happy to provide it.
    With thanks in advance.

In the first instance, would someone be kind enough to recommend the optimum export codecs to creat a .mov file for playing through QuickTime?
Sure, but we need to know what you intend to do with the file. Is it for distribution? Archiving? Watching on a computer, or watching on the web? Do you absolutely need to have a QuickTime MOV? There are many variables, not the least of which concerns the exact specifications of your sequence and the footage you're using in the sequence.
To make a better recommendation, some more information is needed.

  • Exporting .mov files from iPhoto...

My iPhone barely has free memory so I wanted to transfer my pictures and videos from my Camera Roll to iPhoto. Then, I tried exporting all those files to my external hard drive. After waiting for an hour, exporting was finished but I observed something weird: the size of the folder containing all of the photos and videos that were just exported was 16GB, while it is said in iTunes that those files should take up 21GB of memory. I tried to investigate why. Scrolling down, I noticed that nothing seemed to be wrong with all of the photos (.jpg). But, when I tried to play the videos (.mov), the QuickTime Player only displayed a black screen with no accompanying audio. I tried using VLC, but it wouldn't play anything as well. The duration of the videos were the same, though. So, my speculation is that the reason why the folder had a smaller size was that the videos imported from iPhoto weren't properly copied. Afterwards, I checked the file properties of one .mov file. To my surprise, the videos were working in the preview found in the lower portion of the properties tab. The size of one video was: 70,255 bytes (131 KB on disk). That kinda confused me because (even though I'm not a tech buff), I know that 70,255 bytes is not equal to 131 kb (unless you can prove otherwise). I also do not know what "on disk" exactly means --- maybe this is the reason why the folder says it has a size of 16 gb instead of 21 gb? I really do not know...
OK, so I tried to give what I thought was helpful info so that I may receive a solution to my problem. If ever you need to ask for more information that may be necessary for you to answer my case, please do state what they are. I'll check on this question from time to time and I'll try to respond as immediately as possible. Thank you!

    Thanks for the questions TD!
    Mac Pro OS X 10.9.2
Ipad is 7.0.6 and the videos are still on my Ipad and I can play them on the Ipad.  This is where they were originally created, on my Ipad, March 2013.
    Iphoto '09, version 8.1.2
No, the videos do not play in Iphoto.  They have the camera icon on the lower left identifying them as a video and the seconds or minutes, as the as the case may be on the lower right, ex. 0:23, and also identified as a Quicktime movie with size information, ex. 480x640, 12.2 MB.
Some of the videos were taken in portrait and some in landscape, same problem regardless of orientation.
I have videos created before this date and after which play fine and also which exported with no problem.  Haven't tried all of them because I have a lot of videos but just a few to test.
I'm now wondering if I can simply delete the videos from Iphoto and reupload them from the Ipad since they are still on there and playing no problem.  Or has the software changed and is no longer directly responsive.
I appreciate your time and any suggestions you may have for this particular problem.

  • Prroblems Exporting .MOV files from Flash CS5

I am having trouble exporting my animations created in Flash CS5 (or Macromedia flash 5, or CS3) to .MOV files. I'm having these issues on different  platforms  (mac and pc) and different operating systems (XP and win 7) - I only get error messages and out of memory errors, even on the fastest computer I have with 4gig of RAM working on a 2mg Flash file.
I just want to convert my Flash files to a format that can play on Youtube and standard DVD players. Also I've tried many converters (flash to video) - not all free (Moyea, Roxio, iWisoft, Winfx Video Converter, Amor, E.M. Magic, etc, etc) - nothing works. The main problems are either the sound is not synched, the playback is choppy, and the quality is awful.
I think my only hope of getting a good video is starting with a good .MOV file exported from Flash. I know the program is supposed to do this.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flash/cs/using/WSBC0687D4-42A6-445d-B5FF-8032C7D3A8FF.html#WS6 A15AAE2-C176-4161-BAB6-FB082F63B65Ba

Exporting the video at a slower FPS with all the settings maxed and then speeding it up later may not be the most practical and adding a few extra steps can increase the chances of error...I wasn't willing to maniuplate the frame rate, so I tried with the highest video settings and my file ended up being 10GB in size for a video with 1689 frames, and there were STILL artifacts.
There's also the option of exporting your sequence as individual frames and recombinging them using Quicktime Pro (I found that on another forum), and Quicktime Pro is a pretty cheap program ($20?). Just remember to hide your motion guides and activate your masks (right click on your masks in the timeline and select Show Masks), or they'll show up in your frames and you'll have to start again. Also, when inputting your individual frames, remember to select the correct frame speed to it matches the one that you're working with. From there, you have a complete video clip that you can input into any editing suite (heck, Windows Movie Maker is adequate if you're just putting it on YouTube).
Either way, Flash Professional doesn't appear to be capable of generating a .MOV that works outside of the box on its own, at least not without the addition of a 3rd party plugin. Given the proliferation of animation projects on TV that are animated using Flash, I was thinking that Flash SHOULD have a way to render a .MOV file properly (ie: without dropping frames and leaving behind artifacts because it's taking too long to read the frame), but then, it's best to use the right tools for the job. You can use most of the tools in Creative Suite/Cloud to generate the same layered image, but every single application has a specific purpose:
Photoshop can handle text layouts, vector imagery, and animation, but it's best at manipulation of raster images.
Illustrator can handle text layouts and some manipulation of raster images, but it's best at creating and editing vector images.
InDesign can do some manipulation of raster images (or at least it imports them) and creating/drawing of vector images, but it's best at text layouts for multi-page documents and arranging images.
Flash allows you to layout text, draw image vectors, and manipulate rasters, but its best for animation and interactive content (I draw my characters in Illustrator first then import then in Flash...Flash drawing tools just drive me buggy).
Your video editing suite (and probably Premiere...haven't used Premiere in a long time, so I can't say for sure) can handle some text inputs, does some animation, but it's best for taking existing video and audio clips (from whatever sources) and editing them non-linearly.
I'll need someone in the biz to confirm this, but I do suspect that for studio based Flash animation projects that end up on TV (eg: Teen Titans Go!, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), they wouldn't be generating the show entirely using Flash (laying down soundtrack and dialogue as well) and then exporting to .MOV. It's more likely that they'd be exporting individual clips without audio (either using the slow frame rate method or by exporting individual frames and importing to Quicktime) and using a non-linear video editor to edit the clips and lay down audio tracks accordingly.

  • Cannot export movie files from iPhoto 11 (9.5)

Hi. Am not able to export movies from iPhoto 11. I leave the type as Original and get an error - see screenshot. Running on Mavericks and up-to-date iPhoto. Have tried to export to multiple places so hard drive space, etc. isn't the problem. Can export 32,000+ photos just fine but all the movies are erroring out.
Any ideas, and thanks for the help.

    Having the same problem.
Upgraded to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5, and now getting this, every single time.
Happens with both Original and Current exports. The failed files are all point to the Previews location. I checked the first few, which do exist, but are 0KB big. However their master file location is fine.
This ends up leaving 120GB out of my 170GB collection of 1533 photos/videos.
Incredibly frustrating! iPhoto is useless to me now, and I have no way to get my photos out of it.
Here's the exact feedback I sent apple:
    I'm experiencing this issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5478191?tstart=0
Since upgrading to Mavericks and getting the latest iPhoto version. I cannot export my entire photo collection (using original, and current settings).
It always fails with about 120GB of my 170GB collection left. The missing files are videos that iPhoto is trying to copy over the preview location, rather than the master location it seems. The discussion thread has more information.

  • Best compression for exporting large files from iMovie for use in iDVD?

I have a doco that I've made as separate projects too slow to make it all in one project - which I then exported as Quicktime .mov files. When I assembled the .mov files in iDVD I ended up with 4.7GB of material which iDVD flipped out on and crashed.
What would be the best compression to apply to the large .mov files but reduce the overall file sizes by say 10%
Its sometimes taking up to 6 hours to render each project average total screentime per project is about 70 minutes and each project file size ranges from 1 to 6GB...
I feel like I'm a little out of my depth on this one!
    Any suggestions for this dilemma?
    Thanks
    Tony

When I assembled the .mov files in iDVD I ended up with 4.7GB of material which iDVD flipped out on and crashed... Any suggestions for this dilemma?
Not sure if your 4.7GB reference is for the source files or the resulting "muxed" MPEG2/PCM encoded content. In any case a single layer DVD is limited to 4.7 GBs of total content. To be safe, this usually means you are limited to 4.2 to 4.3 GB of encoded movie and/or slideshow content depending on how many and what type of menus you are creating created. Thus, if you are encoding for a single-layer DVD and your project encoded content exceeds the capacity of your DVD, then this would likely explain your problem.
If your project size reference is for the source content being added to your iDVD project, then it is totally irrelevant and you need to concentrate on the total duration of your iDVD and the method of encoding instead of file size. Basically, for a single-layer DVD, only about 60 minutes content can be encoded using the "Best Performance" encode option, 90 minutes using the "High Quality" setting, or 2 hours in the "Professional Quality" encode mode. Thus, if your content duration exceeds the capacity of your encoding mode here, it would likely explain your problem.
In either case, the solution would be to either burn to higher capacity optical media/higher capacity encoding mode or burn your content to multiple DVDs as individual projects at the current media capacity/encoding mode.

  • SIMPLE : Move FIle from Mac to SMB system

I would like to move 1 file to a SMB connection. The script works when moving the file from afp to afp. But when I run this script I get a message that the program can't deliver the file.
So I have always connection between the disks (Script that starts every day)
The path is OK but I guess it's something with privileges? Don't get more info about that from scripteditor.
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    set this_file to ("SERVER1:DATABASES:DATA1:test.txt")
move this_file to ("smb:192.168.000.000:X:DATABASES:DATA1:") with replacing
    end tell
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.
    or ("Volumes:X:DATABASES:DATA1:")

You approaching this in the wrong way.
When you ask the Finder to move a file you specify the source file and the destination directory.
You're trying to provide a URL, and that's the mistake.
If your SMB volume is mounted on the desktop then its path will be /Volumes/SERVER_NAME, and you can just reference it by name, therefore you want something more like:
    tell application "Finder"
      set this_file to "SERVER1:DATABASES:DATA1:test.txt
      move this_file to folder "SERVER_NAME:X:DATABASES:DATA1:"
    end tell
As far as the Finder is concerned, the first element of a path is taken as the volume name.
You might want to add some error checking to ensure the volume is mounted before trying to move the file, too.
