Problems viewing finished burned iDVD on home DVD players

I just created a simple slideshow for Father's Day with iDVD08 and burned it to a Maxell DVD-R DVD. No problem. Then played the burned DVD on my iMAC G5 and again no problem. I have three songs that play throughout the 110 slide show.
Then I played the DVD on our Blue Ray DVD player. Initially it worked fine, then all of a sudden, I get a bright green screen inbetween each slide. I had the cube effect going then suddenly 25 slides into the "show", this bright green screen fills the space, then the next slide appears (no cube effect now) and then green, and then the next slide. The music continues to play.
I then took the DVD downstairs to play on our regular Toshiba DVD player. and this time I get DISK ERROR and it won't play at all.
I burned the DVD using default settings (and Region 1) -- what should I do differently.
Please advise!

The Green Screen problem is a know issue and can be fixed by not letting your computers screen go to sleep or screen saver activate which the DVD is being burned.
Here is the Apple article that covers the issue :-
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1044
As to your DVD not playing at all in one of your DVD players, that can sometimes be the case as all DVD players do not follow the DVD standard and can be incompatible with self burned DVD's.

  • Cross platform DVD burning  - Mac/PC/home DVD player

All right, Geniuses, re: cross platform DVD burning, I have read and read and spoken to many people. Out of 6 1/2 billion people, NOBODY can answer this question. Shane Ross probably can't answer it with a straight face.
How, where, why, when, what do I use to burn a DVD - who knows, maybe up to 90 minutes - so that I can play the same DVD on my Mac, your DVD home player, your boss's PC, whether it's Real Player, Windows Media Player, QT, mmrphmm-mmrphmm, or quakiifrafermessendt (w/chrome) format.
I am running Mac G5, dual proc. 2Gig, 3.5 G. RAM, OS 10.3.9, Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 which includes FCP, Compressor Live Type, DVD Studio Pro 3, Cinema Tools.
The editing part is a cinch. Even with my eyes open. I've used Mac since 1978 and shoot broadcast. Oddly, dropped frames, A/V synch, phase shifting, etc are no problems.
Also, I have about 300 shows that I did on VHS, 3/4", Betacam, and DV. I have an A to D converter that works great converting these tapes to digital which I store on my hard drive. What I need to do, let me back up... about a year ago I had to buy a PC because Mac doesn't support Solid Works 3D program. So, there, I said it, I own a PC. And that's why I have a problem. Or more accurately, a quandry. Rather than tie up my Mac, I might as well use the PC to record my videos to, then burn to DVD, then to edit them or run them through DVD Studio Pro on my Mac for authoring, then back to my first problem, How, where, why, when, what do I use to burn a DVD - who knows, maybe up 90 minutes - so that I can play the same DVD on my Mac, your DVD home player, your boss's PC, whether it's Real Player, Windows Media Player, QT, mmrphmm-mmrphmm, or quakiifrafermessendt (w/ultrascuzzyectoplacticdefoid) format.
Of course, I want highest quality. Absolutely, my finished DVDs have to play on PC, Mac and home DVD players. If you've gone this far, someday I might need to put some of this on the web. I like options. It might be delivered as a stream, or a download. Another compression question?
Simple, huh? Is there anything else you need to know? Should I fire up my old wire recorder, or are you going to suggest another 3rd party peripheral? Which would make me wonder, why hasn't Apple addressed this obvious disfunction.
BTW/ I have found Memorex DVDs work best on my system. Any comments?
    Regards.

    Welcome to the forum!
Time for a reality check: burned DVDs (and even stamped DVDs) are NOT 100% compatible with all DVD-Video reading devices. Period. It just the Nature of the technology and that fact that player and drive manufacturers rush products to market that are not fully in compliance with the DVD-Video standard.
That said, I've had only two individual playback compatibility complaints in the last 6 years with well over 2000 DVD-R discs authored in DVD-SP and burned from my Macs on an external Sony DVD burner. Those two complaints were rectified by burning a DVD+R disc for the clients.
    Things I have learned:
    · Windows Media Player doesn't play nice with DVD-Video. ULead and other DVD players for the Windows platform do work very well (I have to WinXP systems to test on). PC playback compatibility is dependent on many, many things; the user's video card, RAM, drive type (and condition), processor speed ... the list goes on and on. It's impossible to predict if ANY disc will work in any given PC.
    · Memorex is at the very bottom of the list for quality media. Don't get me wrong; they do have a wonderful warranty. If you send back any discs they will replace them with equally poor quality media at no charge. Memorex is simply a marketer - there's no telling what brand or quality of media you're actually getting when you purchase their brand ... but you can be assured it will be cheap.
That said; I'll agree that your workflow seems a bit backward. Authoring to DVD and then editing? Makes no sense. You're losing quite a bit of quality in that process as well as adding unneeded steps. If you must capture the footage with a Windows system and it needs editing, capture then convert to a QT codec that matches your FCP Sequence settings so when you move the files to your Mac for editing, everything actually plays nice.
If your program doesn't need editing and you just want to transfer it to tape, I'd recommend using a stand-alone DVD recorder so you don't have to tie up either computer.

  • DVD made in D S Pro 4.02 won't play on home DVD players

I've wasted about 6 blank DVD's. I've used Compressor, and Quicktime Movie to encode. No matter what I do my DVDs will not play on any of my home DVD players. It play fine on my computer. Please, somebody, help me. I have some people that have been waiting since August to get their wedding video.

I used two brands. These brand have worked on movies that I made in iDVD. Here is the log from DSP: I have 4 DVD players. It won't work on anything except for Apple's DVD Player.

  • I can't play dvd from idvd in home dvd player

I did a project in imovie 11 and add that project to idvd 7.1.2 and when i burn the dvd in a dvd-R or dvd+R it will play on any computer but not on my home dvd player. what is the problem??

To add to Bengt's recommendations follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Playing on home DVD players

I have burned many DVDs on DVD Studio Pro and just recently I have had a client tell me that the DVD player said "check disc" on his Toshiba and Sony DVD player and would not play. I played the same DVDs on my Cyber home player, Mac Computer and a PC computer and it worked fine. Obviously if he can't play it I need to fix it.
I have a Power Mac G5. My drive is a SONY DVD RW DW-U21A. I use compressor in FCP. I use Verbatim -R ink jet printable DVDs. Do I need to purchase toast or possible a Lacie external DVD burner? It is driving me crazy that I can play them and my client can not. He said he bought his Toshiba 6 months ago and the Sony player I am not sure about.
    Any thoughts???
    THANK YOU!

Yup, i would highly suggest Toast. Toast is a dedicated burning software, whereas DVD SP is more for authoring.
You can't set the burn speed in DVD SP either. Toast you can.
If you are buying 16x media, and your burner supports 16x, then DVD SP will output 16x.
If you have 16x media in a 16x drive, Toast can knock it down to 4x. At least in my Pioneer 109 that is the way it works.
I usually do 4x and it has been fine. We turn in plenty of DVD-R media for replication.
Use 7.0 - 7.4mbps for video and max of 224kbps for audio and you should be good on playback.
If your clients disc isnt even playing at all, then it might just be his player.
$35 players these days can be pretty crappy.
But if he has a Sony, then i dont know what the deal is.
    I love Sony DVD Player.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac suddenly stopped burning IDVD to the DVD

For a long time, I've successfully created DVD's using IMovie. I burned onto DVD's using the Share tab on IMOVIE. This opens IDVD and then I go through a process which prompts the DVD to be burned. Suddenly, when it's done, It SAYS "burning is complete" but several of the things that happen when it's working right do not happen, for one it is not ejecting the DVD upon completion, nor is there anything on the DVD. I restarted the computer and am using a new DVD, tossed out the old (empty) DVD. What could be causing this? Thank you if you can help! Jlewis0001

It could be a problem with iDVD, your burner or with your media.
To make sure iDVD is working correctly, create a disk image file out of iDVD (an option under FILE). If this works and you can play the disk image file with Apple's DVD Player application, iDVD has done it's job. If this DOESN'T work, you may have problems with your content.
To see if your DVD burner is working, insert a blank DVD and let it mount on your desktop. Drag some files on the DVD disc icon and drag the disc icon over the trash can icon (which will change to the burn button). If this doesn't work, you may want to try a DVD cleaning disc to see if you have some lint over the drive optical system lens.

  • Problem Viewing Pictures Burned on CD

I burned multiple tif photo files onto a cd using Windows XP several years ago. Now, when I try to view those photos on my macbook, only some of the files are viewable. It shows every file, but some of the files are not are grey and not accessible. Any help would be much appreciated.

The disc was burnt in 2006 using software that converts slides into tiff files. I have accessed these files before with no problems, but lately when I try to use my macbook to pull them up only a few are available. I have tried to pull the pictures up on windows computers, my mac which has tiger, and a mac that has snow leopard. They all don't have access to the same pictures. Keep in mind that in the past I have been able to view these pictures with no problems.

  • How to burn iDVD with no DVD burner..

Hi - I have a new MacBook but foolishly didn't buy the one with the DVD burning capability. I have created a nice slideshow with pics and music, nice transitions, etc. in iDVD which I want to be able to play in a DVD player on the TV, but can not burn it as I have no superdrive. Can you think of a way around this, or other software I can use to create the same slideshow and burn to a CD and play on the TV? Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Your DVD player attached to the TV will probably be looking for a DVD, unless it will also play video CD's. One option is to buy yourself an external DVD recorder. You can scan the discussions to find ones that work with macs (not all specify that they will work with macs). For example, OWC has 3 external recorders from $80 to $120 at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/ . If you follow the path I've seen others follow, once you find out how easy it is to create various materials for DVD's, you'd probably get your monies worth from an external DVD burner.
Another option would be to hook your computer directly to your TV, if the TV will allow it. Many newer LCD/plasma TV's allow for computer hookup.

  • Problems viewing a specific movie in Home Sharing.

A new downloaded HD movie wont show up through home sharing on my iPad but will on my iPhone and Apple TV, is there a reason for this?

I meant to add that all my other movies show up fine, and I have tried signing out and back in to home sharing on my iPad in movie settings.

  • Dvd players won't read iDVD 6 burned dvd...

My recent DVD of photos burned with iDVD 6 on 2 different DVD-R (Verbatim and Maxwell) is readable on Apple computers (tried on 3 different G4 powerbooks) but not readable in the severeal home dvd players I've tried (3 different makers: 3 year old Panasonic, 2 year old Samsung, 2 year old Sony, all compatible with DVD-R format). I will try as suggested in many forums to burn at slower speed. Any other suggestion on what is causing this?

    Hello,
I have the opposite problem. DVDs made with iDVD6 play fine on my Samsung combo DVD/VCR and my Sony Windows notebook -- but they DON'T PLAY BACK on the Apple iMac that burned them or on my iBook -- both the Apples return a message that the media cannot be read in this computer (great: it can be burned but not read!).
Did you find any answer? if so, I'd appreciate your sharing it.

  • Why don't pictures from a slideshow made in iPhoto and then burned on to a DVD in iDVD not use the full screen?

Why don't pictures from a slideshow made in iPhoto and then burned on to a DVD in iDVD not use the full screen?

All I want to do is send my family the pictures for them to be able to see them on most dvds and use manually control.
If you want set top DVD player playback, I suggest you create a a series of slideshows IN iDVD that each contain a MAXIMUM of 99 images. Do not create the slideshow in iPhoto or iMovie.
Is there an easier way to do this, bypassing iDVD?
Some DVD players will play a disc containing jpeg images

  • IDVD5 "Incorrect Disc Format" on Home DVD Player

My newly created DVD will not play in our home DVD player (which has played DVD's I have created in the past). I keep receiving the message "Incorrect disc format". I have burned my project to DVD-R's and DVD+R's. I have enough space, I am burning at "Best Quality", and have deleted the encoded assets before a re-burn because I edited the project. The DVD's I have created will play on my Mac and on other computers (PC's) in the house. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello,
I burned many DVD with iLife3, and it's work very well (dvr-r)
I read theses on many différent home dvd players and computers (IBM or MAC)
I upgrade to iLife4, same thing, but some reading errors...
I upgrade to iLife5, dvd play only on few home dvd players, and on IBM laptop, having lots of problems
I upgrade to iLife6, Only my MAC or a cheap magnasonic home dvd player read the "iDVD burned DVD-r).
What's happend, Apple change the encoding method of iDVD !
I bought a brand new Panasonic DVD-S77, and ... "disk error"
I try to burn 2x (like iLife3 or iLife4 in the past) same résult.
Im frustrated, I don't try Toast or Popcorn, iDVD is supposed to do the job!
I have my G5 since 4 years, I use TDK and Verbatim DVD-R (unfortunately made in China or Taiwan).

Can anyone help, for the first time having a problem with a burned idvd which the sound stops part way through. If sound turned right up on TV muffled sound
is there. Edited on computer and all works fine with full sound right the way through, only trouble is on the disc. Have tried many discs, so does not appear to
    be disc failure.

    Hi
FIRST OF ALL - THE MAJOR ADVICE in this forum EVER !
In iDVD - Before Burning the DVD DO !
    Save as a DiskImage
Double click on this .img icon
test the new Pseudo DVD (looks like a white hard disk) with DVD-tool
    THEN
    • DVD Brand - matters
    • DVD type used - matters
    • BURN SPEED - matters
    • Audio file format - matters
    WHAT did You use
    I only use
    - Verbatim
    - DVD-R SL
    - x2 max x4 - Best / High - IS NOT BEST
    - .aiff - NO .mp3, .wma etc alient formats - from iTune EXPORTED OUT as .aiff ONLY

  • Are there glitches in iMovie or iDVD that would create problems with viewing a finished project on a standard dvd player?

Everytime I render a new project in iMovie and share it with iDVD to produce a video, there always seems to be glitches in the finished project.  I have gone back and tried to recreate the slideshow, but have not had a whole lot of luck.  I am wondering if I need to delete the iMovie and iDVD applications from the computer???  If I do that will it fix my problem or will I even be able to redownload the programs without having to pay for them again?  I have spent more time and $$$ trying to get a viewable disc to burn and am ready to get rid of the computer altogether.  Hopefully that will not have to happen, but this is a constant issue that I go through everytime I work on a project.  Any suggestions???

    Hi
    Yes and No.
There are Bugs and ways to make better or Worse DVDs - see if this can help.
There are two "Bugs" (or at least one)
    • In iDVD - do not go back to video editing program - if You got Chapters set in Your movie - if You try - then now back in iDVD it will ask You to up-date ==> all Chapters will point to Chapter one. Medicine - create a brand new iDVD Project.
    • There MUST NOT BE any Chapter mark set in very beginning of the Movie - or in any transition or within 2 seconds from them.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser ( AND AS MEDIUM - not HD etc as DVD then will suffer in quality ) or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
    • No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc
    • and I'm very careful on what kind of video-codecs, audio file format and photo file formats I use
    • and I consider the iDVD Bug - never go back to video-editor to change/up-date - if so Start  a brand new iDVD project
    • Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
Try to break the process up into two stages
    • Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
    • Burn from this .img file (burning stage)
To isolate where the problem starts.
Another thing is - Playing it onto a Blu-Ray Player. My PlayStation3 can play BD-disks but not all of my home made DVDs so to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • No File Vault on - Important
    • NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
    • Lot's of icons on DeaskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
    • Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
    • And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery
