Problems w/ iTunes locating files after moving library to external HDD
My iTunes collection of Music has outgrown my iBook hard unfortunately, so I finally decided to switch all my music to an external hard drive. I followed this tutorial given by iLounge (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/) step by step, and the hope was that it would be a clean transition so I could make space on my laptop, however I ran into a huge glitch. After going into my preferences and changing where the Library was located (from the laptop to Ext. HD), I went ahead and consolidated my library to the Ext HD. That went okay, or so I thought, but when I tried using some of the songs, I noticed the exclamation point meaning it could find the the song. So i went try and find the song on the external hard drive and for reason, when iTunes was consolidating(copying) the music some songs didn't transfer. I've reset location to the default on the laptop HD, but I'm having to go through and manually locate files that iTunes can't "find". Is there an easier way to get the library reload the original location of the files w/o deleting everything and reimporting the whole library? And how would I do a clean transition?

about the middle of the page they suggest starting iTunes while holding option. then choose "rebuild library"
This did not work for me. I still get icon for "dead tracks" on most of my music. And when holding the option key you just get to choose the library - not rebuild. I'll look to see if there is another way to rebuild. I did find this on Doug's Apple Scripts site: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/solutions01.php#003
+• Wait a sec! I didn't delete any files, but I still see "!" next to some tracks. What gives?+
+Some users report that their files are intact, yet on occasion, some files go AWOL...they still exist, but for some reason iTunes can't see them, and the tracks they represent show the dreaded "!". To discover the facts, you can use List MIA's, mentioned above, which will create a list of these tracks; then you can go hunting for them. To re-associate these tracks, you must click on them; iTunes will ask if you want to locate the missing file, and you weave through an Open/Save dialog for each one.+
+I have read reports of people having success with 1) Repairing Permissions (see your Mac Help) and 2) ensuring that your files are set to "Open with:" iTunes—you set this in a single respresentative file's Get Info box; be sure to click "Change all". This latter solution worked for me when, mysteriously, iTunes failed to recognize older files I had ripped with SoundJam and MACast in OS 9 back in the last century.+
+I have often been asked: "But my tracks are right there! Can't you write a script that just looks for the files in the Music folder?" It's not that easy. However I did put together iTunes Track CPR. It uses the existing data from a "dead track" to try and locate its file in the Music folder. It is not perfect (except for play counts, tag data will be rescued), but it does work well under most circumstances.+
I am going to try the iTunes Track CPR and see if that helps.

IPhoto crashes on opening after moving library to external HDD
Hi
After filling my ibook up with phots to the point of bursting, I decided to buy an external harddrive and store the iPhoto library on it. This all seemed to work fine until I opened iPhoto (for the second time) and started importing photos from my camera. It kicked me out of iPhoto and now it will not reopen.
I have read all the advice on here and have followed the guidance. I have run the permissions programme, downloaded the library manager and run a rebuild. Everything.
I have put a copy of the backup onto the extrenal HDD and this opened fine the first time but not the second. I can get it to open by taking the library.photo from the backup and putting it in the library folders in the external HDD and this allows iPhoto to open for about 5 seconds before kicking me out. Next time I try and open it, I get kicked out immediately.
I had thought that the HDD might be read only but I changing that has made no difference, although I have my suspicions.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
LauchlanWell first off, don't import an old library into a new one. You'll get massive duplication of photos as all the versions are treated a new photos. It's a mess.
What you need to do is recover your Original pics from the old library and put them into the new one.
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
So, find the old library on the HD and right-click on it. From the resulting menu choose 'Show Package Contents' and a finder window will open with the library exposed. You'll see the Originals folder. Drag it out and the from it drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
I think it unlikely that a permissions issue is the cause of the crashing, but it might be some damaged jpeg files. See how you get on with the above.

Locating songs after moving library
I hooked my old iMac up to my new Mac Pro via firewire and moved my iTunes library to the new computer. All the music copied over but iTunes can't locate nearly half of the songs . It will be a crazy amount of work to LOCATE each song one by one, though I have started this arduous process. Isn't there a way to reconnect the library to the media (like Reconnect in Final Cut Pro) where iTunes can see where its library is now and reconnect all files with matching names?
If not, please add this feature to the next release.I did the same exact thing yesterday. My wife's computer was getting low on memory so I took the iTunes folder and copied it to an external hard drive with 750 GB of memory. I changed the file path in the Advanced Options of iTunes, but now when I click on a song, it tells me that the file cannot be found. When I locate the file manually, it works, but this will bealong and tedious process for 3900 songs. Is there something I missed? Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!.

ITunes stops responding after moving library
I moved my iTunes library to an external drive because my internal drive was full. I linked to the new location via iTunes preferences. The folder is an exact replica of the old one, just in a new location. Now iTunes can not find anything, and freezes up as soon as I try to re-link to a file (and OK it when it asks if I want to search for other missing files). My library is huge, organized, with album artwork, seasons of TV shows, movies, etc. Does anyone have any tips to fix this, save having to relink one file at a time?
I linked to the new location via iTunes preferences.
That's not how you do it.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Longer answers if for any reason you do not think all library files are inside your iTunes folder (changed preferences settings at some point):
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
2011 ilounge article: Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/ - An article with good background information (similar to the links above), particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick answer above. Unfortunately under the single term "transferring library" it describes two very different moves; relocating just your media (not really transferring your library and not recommended unless you really need this configuration), and relocating media+database (really your whole "library"). Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media. -
Locating tracks after moving to another external disk
Dear all,
I am sure this question has arisen many times before. i would be grateful if anyone knows the link to the answer.
My iTunes was stored on one external disk. I moved it to another, that is, it is in the same location (a timecapsule), but the folder name containing the library has changed. Now, the location of all items stored in the library in the old folder name are not located, and I am asked to locate them individually anew. No problems doing that. But I would prefer a global solution, if there is one. Of course, I could rename the new folder on the timecapsule back to the old. But I would prefer not to! Any hints?
Regards
Mr KizkijIf you move the songs yourself, iTunes will still look for them in the old location because you did not update the iTunes database (by moving the music incorrectly).
To fix your problem, do this...
Open iTunes prefs -> Advanced and make sure the iTunes music folder location is set to the iTunes music folder on the external.
Then run this script -> iTunes Track CPR v1.3
In the future, the correct way to move your music is...
Go to iTunes menu Edit -> prefs -> Advanced.
Set the iTunes music folder location to where you want on the external drive.
Now go to iTunes menu File -> Library -> Consolidate.
This will copy everything in iTunes to the location on the external.
Once it is finished, you can delete \Music\iTunes\ iTunes music folder.
Delete ONLY the iTunes music folder on the internal. -
I recently purchased a mac book air with the 128g SDD. After setting it up with all my desired applications I started to download some large media files. Knowing that I'm working with limited HDD space I hooked up a portable 1TB Drive, formatted it for MAC OS Extended (journaled) and moved all of my large files onto the back up drive. After moving all the files in my downloads folder to the trash, and then emptying the trash the space on the SDD "Macintosh HD" did not change. Currently reading at used 91g, available 29g (as seen in the disk utility program with the Macintosh HD highlighted). To find the 'mystery used space' I ran a program called 'DIsk Inventory X' on their opening screen the program shows a smaller capacity with 84g used and 27g free, running the program adds up the value of all the folders and applications on the HD only to discover their is only 54g's accounted for (this is realistic for the files and applications I currently have installed and intend to carry with me on a daily basis)
So my question is why is my SDD only filing up and not clearing the space I move to trash and empty, at this rate I won't have any space left.sounds like the drive may be defective. remember that hardrives can crash at any time even if new and the drives in the air books are just really big flash drives. sound like you have an appointment for the genius bar to get it replaced.
i have one more possible fix but requires you download a free app called "OnyX". if you are not famliar with the power of this app, be carefull about what you have it do. hit me back up if you choose to go this route. other wise to the apple store you go my friend -
Moved Library from external HDD to MyBook NAS...
Hello forum - I am both perplexed and frustrated. I have moved my entire itunes library from one external drive to another network drive. I re-pointed iTunes to it's appropriate library.itl file. All music, movies, audiobook, etc. seem to appear. Two things do not appear:
1. The bulk of my artwork. 99% of my library has artwork which I manually embedded which is what I find strange as it seems that often that is the suggested fix when it is missing. Any thoughts? Is there a way to have itunes re-scan a folder and re-populate?
2. The "Shared Library" icon on the left hand side is also vanished. It does appear that home Sharing is on - but no icon.
I'm using the latest version of itunes, OSX Mountain lion 10.8.2 on 15" MBPr 2.3GHz.
FWIW - originally library was on a WD MyBook external drive. I transferred it to a WD MyBook Live Duo drive which is plugged into my airport extreme (latest model).
Thanks in advance for any advice.
SteveOk - I may have resolved this (let you know in about 2 days...). New question;
I did a library re-organization with iTunes. The heirarchy of folders seems weird - is this normal or "ok"?
On external drive:
There is content located in Music, Movies, etc. but there is alos content including Music, Movies, etc in the "iTunes Media Folder" - is that the way it i ssupposed to be? Seems like all music should be in one place - yes/no?
Thanks - Steve -
I have a macbook pro, but the amount of pictures I have now exceeds 500GB
I want to have all the pictures in iPhoto, so I could see them and edit them in iPhoto.
Which means... I need the iPhoto file folder in an external HDD to use iPhoto that way.
Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD?
Will it work the same way, as if the iPhoto folder is on the internal drive?yes
yes
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

Itunes wont open after windows renamed the external HDD's name
My computer renamed my external HDD's letter designation from F: to G: and iTunes would not open anymore, it would say the itunes folder cannot be found or created and it is required, the original folder should be located within "my music" folder.
I tried everything including reinstalling itunes many time but it would not work, i even tried to delete the whole itunes folder and imported my roomate's itunes folder on my computer and itunes still would not open.
I tried to use windows power toy program to change the special folder address, but the folder "my music" is missing from the list while everything else is on there.
Some help would be greatly appreciatedWell you did far more work and possibly screwed up your pc for an easy fix. You can change the drive letter through the utility called "Computer Management"
If you open windows exploder, you should see a "My Computer" listed in the left window. Rt click on that and select Manage from the context menu. In the left window you should see Disk Management. Here is the list of all drives and their letters. You know unless you added a drive that was already designated F then windows shouldn't rename drive letters without you manually changing it.
When you say you deleted the whole itunes folder what do you mean? Did you delete C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\My Documents\My Music? If you cant recreate this folder, then my suggestion would be to use TweakUI to reset the My music folder in the windows OS. -
Problems reading .xmp sidecar files after moving .nefs in bridge CS6
Problem with CS6 beta. Whenever I move a set of edited (using LR4 with metadata saved to folder) .nef files in bridge to new folder, the .xmp files are not recognised in bridge. They are thre if you look in Windows explorer. If I then find the files in LR4 and resave the adjustments, then becomes visible again. Consistent error on each attempt in different folders. Move was via Ctrl A + dragging in bridge. .nefs were form a Nikon D3.

Installed TWAIN devices: NONEHi Trevor, thanks for replying. Yes, as I said moving files directly in bridge. The standard functionality (since I have been using bridge back in CS2) was to move the .xmp files along with the .nef files (although you only see the .nef files directly in bridge). When I say not reading .xmp files I mean that none of the adjustments are visible in the target bridge folder, equally the icons you would normally see on the top RHS showing adjustments have been made are no longer visibile (remember that I have cheked using windows explorer that the .xmp files did succesfully migrate to the target folder). Having been using CS5 bridge on the same machine for several years and have never had this lack of functinonality, therefore I am reporting it as a potential bug in CS6 beta bridge.
I should also confirm that before they were moved, no problems at all in opening the .nef files in camea raw 7.0 and all edits honoured. -
Itunes 9.0.2 crash after moving library to external HD - gathering informat
Hello!
Strange stuff going on - but probably because i did something wrong
To give a quick overview : i bought an external HD (LaCie) to store my music library that was getting too big (45 GB) for the small internal HD on my Macbook. I changed the location in my preferences and later on itunes started copying the songs/videos/apps to the HD. The change of location was not immediately accepted. i had to do it a few times before itunes kept the new location. I checked if the new location was working by deconnecting/reconnecting my external drive. Indeed, everything worked. But when i closed itunes and restarted something went wrong.... Genius seems to make itunes crash - it always says : gathering information about your library (and then it stops halfway and itunes crashes). Maybe i have to do everything all over again but i don't know how as itunes keeps on crashing and i cannot change anything anymore.Hello!

I'm using Lion 10.7.2 and iTunes 10.5.2
I have moved my iTunes music from an external hard drive onto my new iMac (with a terabyte hard drive) with music folder organized - when I try to play some tracks I get the iTunes can't locate warning and so I follow through and show iTunes the track - they are all in the music folder on my iMac hard drive - they all copied over and they all appear in the iTunes library list - so far as I can tell out of a 500 gigabyte music collection - but there are so many giving me the error - many other tracks function as they should too, some work others don't - So I'm looking for a way to get all the error tracks fixed in a batch correction way. Doing this individually with each track just isn't realistic.
Can anyone suggest how I might fix this issue?
Also, after I show iTunes the song location and it plays, I get a find files prompt that looks like it wants to find other files, but that just causes the process to jam and I have to force quit iTunes and then it doesn't remember what I last showed it next time I open iTunes.
Also I'm trying to avoid the use of the consolidate function because that would copy a whole other set of music - not in iTunes - that is in the process of being edited (audio hijack pro and fission tools being used to put vinyl and tapes to mp3) But all that other music just means the consolodate function across my whole computer would be too much. Some details seem to be coming into focus - I have started scrolling through the main library list A to Z repairing tracks individually (there are thousands, but it's what works so far) - as I work through, it appears the problem occurred on tracks where album artist metadata was different than song artist metadata, predominantly. I'm not sure that is 100% the case in every instance, but that is what it's looking like. I don't why that happened, must be some technical glich I guess.
Also, I tried running Doug's Scripts - the one titled, iTunes Track CPR v1.3 - it is supposed to fix exactly the kind of issue I'm having - I bet it would work for some people with a similar issue - but for my case it only identifies the 'de-linked' tracks and doesn't repair them - that is at least helpful as I scroll though to fix them - I can see exactly which tracks have the issue quickly after running that script - but iTunes doesn't remember that warning symbol after a log-out, so it's only worth running the script on a set of tracks I intend to review and fix in any given session at a time.
If you are interested, Doug's free scripts can be found at
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=itunestrackcpr
there are other interesting and useful iTunes scripts there too...
also, unrelated to the issue I'm having, I found a lot of really useful and time saving metadata fixing free scripts at - hubi's iTunes scripts - the page isn't English, but the script download is easy to find -
hubi's scripts work for batch selections of tracks - so if you import an album and find the metadata screwed up somehow, you can select the whole set of screwed up tags at once (even across a series of albums), run the easy to use script, and watch it all be fixed automatically while you sit back and relax...
http://hubionmac.com/wordpress/category/softwareschmiede/applescripting/itunes/
just for reference, here is a sampling of what hubi's scripts can do...
there are other useful scripts out there - the tough part can be finding the one that helps you...
01-(un)capitalizes
01-(un)capitalizes
This script changes.... THIS TEXT into This Text... or this text
01-Delete spaces
Sometimes invisible blanks are behind an artist name or album name...this script deletes these blanks behind or infront of the strings
01-Delete x first-last chars. of Title
A Name like "01--Ray Of Light" will be changed to "Ray Of Light" and the01 will be entered in the tracks tracknumber id3 field =)
01-fix combined Artist-Title
Sometimes Tracknames look like:
"Madonna---Ray of Light" and in the artist field you see something like"Ripped by Me"... this script puts Madonna back to the right field... all youhave to do is to enter the right delimiter ("---" in this case)
01-switch Artist<->Title...
Switch ID3 field a with ID3 field b (not only Artist with Title any more =)!
01-z_filename ->Title
Sets the ID3 field Title to the track's filename)
01-z_trackNr-Filename->ID3
When a track's filename look like "01-Madonna-Ray of Light.mp3" andyou don't have the track's tracknumber stored in the ID3 Tag... this Scriptcan do this for your =) -
Issues with sound quality after moving library to external HD
after i moved my itunes library to an external HD, the sound quality of the music files (both imported from CDs and itunes purchases) developed significant hissing and crackling and slight pitch shifts.
even after i switched back to using the internal itunes library, the low sound quality persisted.
is there some sort of an audio setting that needs to be changed? is this an itunes issue or something related to the HD? please help.
here's some info on my set up:

mac mini: 1.42 ghz powerpc g4/1gb memory/80 gig internal HD

Lost files after exporting library to external HD
I recently exported my iTunes music folder to my external HD to free up space on my internal HD. Now when I try to play some songs a window pops up and says original file could not be found. I have lost alot of music and a great deal of it was purchased. Has this happened to anyone else?
iTunes' export option does not move any files - it just creates an XML copy of the library.

HT1660 itunes won't recognize my library on external hdd
I can't get iTunes to recognize my library in on external drive.
I have a similar problem. Bought an external drive to store music and pictures, followed the instructions on several threads here on how to transfer these from my D drive (the back up drive on the computer itself) to the L drive (the Buffalo Linkstation); changed the location of the library to the correct address where all the music files are (I can see them there) having consolidated them there. It could not find any of them unless I individually located them (there are over 9000 tracks so I have not got time to do that). I changed the location back to the original and it found them again. Next I tried following the thread on the .itl file - using shift and selecting the library on the L drive, but it only found 300 tracks, some bought, some transferred, some full albums, some only part of the album, an apparently random selection. I tried going back to the original .itl file and the same happened - it only found the same small selection of tracks. I know the files are still there - I can see them, but I have no idea how to connect itunes to them. Please help!
