Problems w/ PC playback of IDVD dvd-rs

I produce video for a living. My problem is my client's PCs and some DVD players will not play the DVD-Rs produced on my G4 or Powerbook. The media is still pics from I-Photo and burned in I-DVD 4.1. I use Verbatim, Maxell and Phillips DVD-R media. Of course my DVDs play on all my Macs and my personal DVD players. What gives? I did not have this problem with video mastered to DVD-Rs.

Hello Rod,
what is your encoding preset? maybe your client's PC doesn't like the data rate of the disc. Also ask your client what software he is using to play the DVD. WMP in my opinion does not always do a good job here. the software should be WinDVD or similar (equivalent to mac DVD Player).
as for the stand-alone DVD players: you will never be able to provide 100% compatibility....
I wouldn't say that DVDSP will solve all your problems, although it's a great piece of software. I'm guessing here, but think you're in the same business as me, and i have been using iDVD for almost three years now with excellent results. so far i had about 5 DVDs come back to me...

  • Problems exporting and playback the MPEG2-DVD videos, from .MP4 file!

I have PremiereProCS4 v.4.2.1 installed on this PC:

I have downloaded an AVCHD file .MTS 1920x1080p 25p, made by Canon HF100 AVCHD camcorder, from this source (.rar file):
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RWR5MNYHhttp://www.megaupload.com/?d=B9ZDX2RZ
The videos in question called: "25pf_1.25_f1.8.MTS" playback and export from Premiere as MPEG2-DVD very well.
I playbacked it on Premiere on the second Monitor as "OutputDevice". All Ok.
I playbacked also the DVD made with EncoreCS4, on the external DVD set-top-box-player. All OK.
I downloaded also another clip 1080p 25p, converted as .mp4, from the same author, imported then in Premiere with Preset "XDCAM EX 1080p 25p" (470MB) :
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=B9ZDX2RZ
    No problems with playback.
Exported as MPEG2-DVD PAL "Lower Field First".
Opened in NeroShowTime Player: the video have a serious interruptions of the playback, some moments plays back-and-forward, and it isn't fluid at all!
I tried to create a DVD with EncoreCS4 and played it with DVD Player set-top-box, and the result is bad, and is the same as the playback on my PC with NeroShowTime Player. It present the back-and-forwars interruptions.
I tried also to create an AVCHD Project 1080p 25p and import the .MP4 file, but the problem persists !
After exporting them, and played-back on NeroShowTime and on Set-Top-Box Player, the video have strange behavior, and plays back-and-forward!
    1) What Preset in Premiere should I use to editing, for this .MP4 file format, (filmed with Canon HF100 AVCHD and converted from original .MTS format to .MP4 format)?
    2) Is this a transcoding problem?
    3) Is this an exporting MPEG2-DVD PAL field-order issue?
This is my bad exported MPEG2-DVD converted file, available for downloading:

  • Problem with clip playback in iDVD

I created a project in iMovie from a single imported video. I cut it into clips, added chapter markers then used share to iDVD to export the project into iDVD. Once in iDVD I set up separate sub menus and organized them.
Now when I play back the finished DVD, the clips run together. If I choose a clip it plays (starting from the correct point as noted by the marker), but then continues right into the next one without returning to the sub menu. This is the same for any clip I play.
Is there a way to treat the clips as individual movies, so once the clip is finished playing you are returned to the menu you chose that clip from?? I cut all the clips up in iMove, so I don't understand why it's treating them as a whole.
    iMove 6.0.2
    iDVD 6.0.2
    TIA!

    - I cut all the clips up in iMove
"It would appear you only inserted chapter marks."
What I mean by "cut up the clips" is I used those little "bracket tabs" below the play head to choose the section I wanted. Then I cut and pasted that clip to the time line creating an individual clip. I pasted several clips from a single imported movie off my DV cam. When I inserted the chapter marks, I would choose a clip on the time line and then create a marker. It appears that iMovie does not recognize those clips as individual since I cut them from the same imported movie.
The only other way to make them separate is to cut all the clips from my imported movie with Quicktime, then import them separately. Of course I was trying to do it all in iMovie because it's much faster.
    Thanks for your help!

  • IDVD, DVD -R and DVD +R

I have iMovie 5.0.2, iDVD 4.0.1 and the following Superdrive:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D:
    Firmware Revision: A707
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2000 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Media: No
I made a movie in iMovie and transferred it to iDVD. I inserted a blank DVD +R disk, but the drive spat it out and iDVD said 'Insert a DVD -R disk'.
As can be seen from the above extract from my 'About this Mac', my drive will burn DVD +R disks; and, indeed, I subsequently successfully burnt my movie onto a DVD +R disk by using Toast Titanium.
I should like to ask four questions:
    1) Am I right in deducing that it is my iDVD 4.0.1 that is balking at the DVD +R disk and not my burner?
    2) As I have bought a pile of blank DVD +R disks, it would be good to be able to use them, and I like using iDVD. So is there a later version of iDVD that will burn DVD +R disks?
    3) If the answer to 2) is 'Yes', from where can I obtain such a later version without buying the whole of iLife '08? (I say '08, because my OS X is Tiger, not Leopard.)
    4) What are the relative advantages and disadvantages of +R and -R disks?
Thank all you experts very much in anticipation of becoming educated.

I'm sorry to have to revisit this so soon. I downloaded Patchburn and went through the process of installing profiles (actually unnecessarily because my burner is the official Apple-installed one) and the iDVD4 support files. But now what?
My problem is not to make iDVD recognize my burner; it does even without Patchburn. It is to be able to save an iDVD4 project as a disk image as suggested by John. If I double-click on Patchburn to open it, it just wants me to go through the process of installing the profiles again. So where does saving as a disk image come in? There is no Help documentation or Contact information on the Patchburn website and the FAQs don't help, so please, John or anyone else, point me in the right direction.

When I make a project in iDVD'09, there are sometimes - at voluntary moments - green blocs with points flickering in some scenes of my iMovie-film.
In i-Movie there is no problem with  this film, but the problem begins by exporting to iDVD and making there a project.
Who can help me, then I cann't find everything about this in any forum?

    Hi
Can be a problem that get multiplied and visible when iDVD encode for DVD.
    A. See if problem can be isolated to a single frame in the movie and re-import this clip and see if it's better
    B. When free space on Start-Up hard disk goes low - strange things like this might occure. I never go under 25Gb free space on this Start-Up Mac OS hard disk !
    C. Does this problem arises what ever encoding quality You use ?

  • IMovie iDVD DVD-R = no burn.

Working in OS 10.4.6, using iMovie HD and iDVD6.
Made the movie (from stills) just fine. Applied all the "Ken Burns" effects and set it all to a piece of music. Preview works great.
Did the Share to iDVD, and then built the intro.
    All good to that point.
Going to Burn, the process does it's thing, but when getting to the final portion where it actually does the burning, it says there is an error & ejects the DVD-R.
Tried this a few times. Same result.
I've next gone to trying to burn a DVD of data from the Burn Folder option, and that doesn't seem to be working, either. Here I get "error 0x8002006D".
I really don't want to think this is a problem with the burner itself, but looking to see if anyone else has any ideas.
Noticed a few mentions of that error code in some earlier posts, but no real answers. So here I am, fishing for one.
    Thanks.
    .

The Finder's Burn Folder option is for burning Mac files onto a DVD as data files. It's not for creating a TV-playable DVD, which is the goal of iDVD. Entirely different things. You want a TV-playable DVD.
Check out the tips in this thread, which discusses a similar problem.
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=2449791
Note that until you get the problem solved, you can use iDVD to "burn" a disk image of your project instead of a DVD. This lets you separate the encoding (compressing) from the burning. Later, after encoding is successful, you use Disk Utility to burn a DVD of your disk image.
If that burn fails you know there's a disk-burning problem of some kind, not an encoding problem.

  • Problems Encoding FCP/Motion Project to DVD, HELP..........

Hi all, i've already posted in the Motion forum and no joy so im hoping the FCP guys can help me. Heres the problem.
I have an FCP project which which is 720 x 576 48 KHZ DV PAL. I'm trying to add titles using Motion. I've tried the Embedd and non embedd methods and when i view the titles in FCP everything looks fine.
The problem occurs when i author to DVD (iDVD or DVDSP4). My settings are the same in FCP as they are in Motion. Any pieces of video with motion effects flicker really bad. I've coastered about 10 DVD's messing with the field settings and no joy. The closest i got to a result was by applying a deinterlace filter in FCP. Whilst this helped, the footage was still noticably lacking in quality compared to the rest.
I've tried exporting the footage in compressor to Mpeg2 then authoring in DVDSP4 and the outcome was exactly the same. I find it hard to believe that im the only person with this problem??? If i create a project in motion with no DV footage it plays fine so theres a problem with motion layering over DV i guess. This pretty much renders motion useless for my needs. Incidentally the DVD's play ok on a Mac/PC, the problem is on Televisions. I've tried three Tv's and they're all the same aaarrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!
    Can anyome help?

Hi Chris, thanks for the prompt reply. I've followed your advice, i had to cheat of course. I set up my camcorder as a DV out device and then sent an S-Video to the TV. Now i can see the offending footage before i author. As you predicted the FCP footage is also affected by the motion titles, so that eliminates DVD authoring as the culprit. What a waste of DVD's. So my problem now is that Motion effects are causing the FCP footage to flicker. I have both apps set to Lower field dominance and pal 720 x 576. I cant work out where im going wrong.

  • Idvd & dvd studio pro disc not playing properly in other players

    Hi
I have edited a program for the past 3 DAYS, and i have burned the program using IDVD, DVD studio pro, and Toast Titanium.
It plays ok on my G5 and my laptop G4.
And every lousy time i give the disc to the client something different goes wrong.
If it's not a lockup,it's artifacts, and programs jumping forward and backwards between scenes, by itself.
I'm using Memorex and Philips DVD discs.
My Toshiba DVD appliance deck burns the program beautifully and no hiccups.
But the customer wants the lovely menus that apple has designed
Personally i am sick and tired of apple and all the "perfect world marketing" , i had yet to burn a DVD disc with idvd or dvd studio pro with any confidence.
Apple should get into the " Bovine scatology " business, at least when that gets spread something grows despite the smell.
Anyway, i don't know if anyone can help me or not .
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you
    Vic.

While I can understand your frustration, I believe the problem here is in the encoding settings. iDVD doesn't give you much control over specific encoding settings, whereas encoding through Compressor will.
Some specific things are missing from your post. What is your workflow? How are you exporting your timeline? What format is your project (DV, HDV, DVCPRO, PAL, NTSC)? When you built your DVD in Studio Pro, what encoding settings did you use? Do you know where the encoding settings are? What are the settings for your DVD project (SD or HD)?
You would do yourself and your client good to take some time to read over proper DVD mastering workflows. It's really quite painless once you understand how things work. Blaming Apple for this is not a very helpful way to solve your problem.
The tutorial DVDs that came packaged with your install discs will also help. Just look at the lessons for DVD Studio Pro.

    Hi
    A. iMovie'08 to 11 are not the tools of choice if one aim to do a DVD as they all discard the quality of the picture by discarding every second line in it. NO way around this due to that it happens between Event's and Project's so as soon as it is being edited - Quality is lost.
    B. I use iMovie HD6 or FinalCut
    C. if iM'08 to 11 is a must - THEN DO NOT - Share to iDVD - BUT - "Share to Media Browser" and as Large (or ev. Medium)
THEN DO - Save as a DiskImage and see that this plays OK and ALL SOUND
    D. if added audio from iTunes - then instead in iTunes - Collect all needed Audio into a NEW PlayList then BURN this as an Audio-CD (.aiff - NOT .mp3 or other) - Then use the Files on this CD in Your Movie Project's (I do)
    E. I only use .aiff audio - 48kHz 16-bit (miniDV tape Camera) or 44.1kHz Audio CD - NEVER .mp3 or .wma or other file format - ALL is converted first into .aiff - ALWAYS ! - I have very few problem with Audio in my projects in iMovie or FinalCut !

  • How do I make a Keynote slideshow controllable in an iDvd DVD?

How do I make a Keynote slideshow controllable on an DVD made with iDVD? And how do I make the slideshow completely auto with no return to a theme. I want people to be able to start the slideshow when they insert the DVD (no theme) and advance through the Keynote slide show (with all transitions, etc.,) by pressing a button on the remore controller to show eack slide - and advance at their option. Then they should have the option to repeat the slide show. Currently, the slideshow plays all the way through - and then pops into a theme intro - which I don't want. I thought it was set to run without a theme with my setting in the "Map" menu.I have exported a Quicktime version of the slideshow from Keynote which is completely controllable (slide by slide) on my MacBook Pro, but just runs straight through from an iDVD DVD. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help which I badly need...

    Burning Keynote presentations in iDVD

    (From fellow poster Mishmumken: )
How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
    1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:
    http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html
Our resident expert, Old Toad, also recommends this: there is a 3rd export/share option that give better results.  That's to use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option.  Then in iDVD go to the Media Browser and drag the movie into iDVD where you want it.
    Hope this helps!

  • Problem with making 16:9 PAL DVD

    Hello!
I'm trying to make a 16:9 PAL DVD in Adobe Encore and everything is perfect untill I play the DVD on my TV (it works just fine on my computer). Two videos included in the DVD were made in Adobe Premiere and one of them works without any problems (it is just a slideshow), but part of the other footage isn't shown on the TV - the video is being played on the TV with no black lines around it, but it is like cropped. The video was made in 16:9 and I've also checked the settings on my DVD player, which look just fine to play a 16:9 DVD. I think that this problem had occured while making the DVD in Adobe Encore and I'd like to know how to solve it if anyone of you can tell me how.
    Thanks for your help.

OK, the PrPro Project/Sequences are set to 16:9 PAL and Exported as that, into an Encore 16:9 PAL Project, right, or did you use Adobe DL for transferring the Assets over?
On a computer, the DVD plays fine, but part of one of the Timelines is black, when the DVD is run on a set-top player, hooked to a TV. The other Timeline is shown much smaller, with black bars around it. Is that correct?
Can you test the DVD on another set-top player, and another TV? Maybe stop by your local electronics store and ask them to play it for you. What happens there?
As there are differences in the setting of both players and TV's regarding wide-screen, it could be as simple as those settings. However, that would not explain why half of one Timeline is black. Now, poor choice of media, or too high a burn rate could account for some of that.
What media did you use, and what was the burn rate?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

I use imovie to create videos. When I burn the video to DVD and play it back there is digital breakup in the playback from the DVD. The digital breakup does not show in playback on the computer. I understand there is a file I need to delete and reboot the computer and imovie will rebuild the file in the program. Help!

My method is to use the DAW in standard recording mode, and set up the camcorder entirely separately.  After recording, I automate the audio mix with fader moves and effects, then export ("bounce to disk") a full-fidelity AIFF, 16-bit 48 kHz stereo file (most videos use 48, not 44.1).  I use iMovie '11 to import the video from the camera, then import the stereo audio file and match it up to the camera audio by dragging it into the iMovie Project.  Make the waveforms visible, it's not too hard to align.
Then, use iMovie's "Export as Quicktime" feature.  Here, by going through the menus and options, you can control the audio compression (for example, 256k instead of 128, although 128 seems to be enough for YouTube).
AppleMan1958 posted a YouTube video about controlling iMovie's export options that may help:
