Problems with 3G reception outside US?

Because many people believe that their 3G reception issues are caused by AT&T network coverage, I thought I'd start a topic for non-US users. Anyone care to add their experiences? Here's mine:
My 8GB iPhone 3G is working fine except for the 3G bit, which sort of defeats its purpose. This phone has very bad 3G reception. I live in the Netherlands, a country where 3G coverage is usually 100% wherever you are. And unfortunately free WiFi is not all that common here.
I have the Nokia N95 to compare the iPhone 3G with. As I'm typing this on the 2nd floor of our house my N95, lying flat on my desk, is showing full 100% 3G reception. When I try to browse on the N95 or use it as a modem for my laptop, the phone reports 3.5G (HSDPA) and speeds approaching 300-400 KB/sec.
My iPhone 3G, also lying flat on my desk, is reporting 0-1 bar and when I switch it to show the numbers, it's reporting -110 dbm - which is terrible. It gets a bit better when I hold it up to the window, but drops to zero bars intermittently and does not switch to 2G. Safari reports it does not have a connection.
So it seems like I have to use my N95 alongside this iPhone for the time being. I was planning to do that anyway, as the iPhone cannot be used as laptop modem, does not have voice guided navigation (yet) and in the car I cannot voicedial my contacts. The N95 does this perfectly and I really appreciate those features in everyday use.
I do love the UI and the apps of the iPhone though, and the sound quality is stellar compared to the noisy headphone jack of the N95. If only these two phones could melt together somehow...
As for the connection issues, I think it's Nokia's experience with the raw phone connectivity stuff and peculiarities of different networks that's showing here. Hopefully new firmware for the iPhone 3G can remedy this.

There may be a few misguided indivduals who believe that their problems in strong coverage areas with the iphone 3G signal strenght can be attributed to AT&T. The majority believe otherwise.
Too many people have had the experience you have had. Their other 3G phones (Nokia, LG, HTC, Samsung whatever) work flawlessly while their 3G iPhone drops calls, or gets poor data throughput.
Apple has a problem. Hopefully, they are near a solution.

  • Problem with DTMF reception

We have a problem with one gsm to sip gateway plugged to our UC520.
When called are made to the gsm module, the gateway redirects automatically the inbound call to an autoattendant on the IPBX.
The user is then supposed to make some choices to navigate in the autoattendant menu, but we noticed that very often DTMF is badly recognised.
The user has to insist on each key. Sometimes it can also not be sufficient to make the autoattendant to understand the choice...
    We have the following :
GSM Gateway (2N Voice blue next) <----- SIP TRUNK (G711ULAW) -----> IPBX (UC520)/Autoattendant
The signal reception quality for the GSM module is average (-75dB). We have also a GSM to BRI gateway placed just nearby the other gateway and all is working very fine with this one.
    Any idea ?

Can you check the dtmf configuration on your dial-peers? Is this a Unity Express Autoattendant?

  • Still having problem with 3G reception

I owned the 2G model and it worked fine. I upgraded to the 3G and I continue to consistently have calls dropped. At home and office (metro Atlanta) I get zero 3G bars, but get 5 Edge bars. The upgrade to 3G is not worth the extra $10 per month if you have to disable it and use Edge to talk through a call.

This is a common issue it appears with all 3g iphones. We recently made the purchase and it would have to be the worst phone we have owned so far. Constantly loses reception, sometimes cant answer calls due to reception.. and this is in the middle of the city. There was an article i just read stating that there may be a hardware fault with the iphone 3g, something to do with the antenna and signal amplifier not working correctly.

  • Problem with email reception-- Having some success!!

After downloading the 2.2 update, I was having trouble with receiving emails automatically and manually. I have been tinkering with the phone all morning trying to figure out what could have changed. I seem to be having some success, at least manually downloading emails. The load messages "wheel" isn't freezing up anymore. At least for now.  Here is what I did.
On your phone, click on the "file" tab on the bottom left of phone. Next, click the "more" tab, then account settings. Scroll down to server settings and click "incoming settings". Check your settings to make sure they haven't changed. Scroll down and click "next". The phone will check incoming server settings. Next, do the same thing with your outgoing settings, just for good measure.
This is all I did and the email seems to be coming, at least manually. Maybe after the update it did a little something to the email, but letting the phone check the settings smoothed it out. I've got my phone set up for 5 min. auto check, so I'll stop manually checking and see if I get anything automatically.  Let me know if this helps!

What's the type of provider's mail server? (e.g. POP3,IMAP, or enterprise Mail for Exchange Protocol)
have you tested by removing and re setting the account?

  • Problems with dropped calls and no reception on Samsung Continuum

My mother and I both purchased a Samsung Continuum in late March 2011, and have experienced the same problems with the phone.  The device drops at least 2-3 calls per day, often on the same conversation; we have not found that location or time of day makes a difference.  The phone freezes up frequently, even if no apps are running in the background.  We lose our 3G network reception frequently, and cannot access our texts, emails, or the internet.  The screen saver kicks in even when we are actively dialing a number, or typing in a text message.  The overall performance of the phone is also poor, and it is quite slow much of the time.
We have raised this issue several times with a representative at one of the Verizon stores, but he states that he can find no problem with the phone, and that these issues may not be covered under our insurance plan.  None of my friends with non-Samsung phones are having the same problems with phone reception and performance.  I am aggravated enough with these issues that I am considering reactivating my old Blackberry, which worked like a charm.
I am not upset that my phone has not been updated to Android 2.2.  I just want the phone to perform as stated, and not fail at its primary function:  making and receiving phone calls.  I am not certain if these problems originate with the phone, Verizon, or Samsung, nor do I care.  I just want to resolve these issues as soon as possible, or I will have to look at other alternatives.
    Thank you.

If this doesn't work...now what??? I have a useless $400 plus piece of unreliable junk. My Motorola Razor was ions more reliable than this phone...very, very sad but true.
What carrier were you using with the Razor? AT&T? Same area?

  • Cisco ASA 5505 - problem with ssh, icmp on OUTSIDE interface

    Hi all,
I have a very strange problem with OUTSIDE interface and remote ssh. Well, I have followed documentation and configure remote access for ssh like this [1.]. If I want to connect from internet to OUTSIDE interface [2.] get no response and in log I can see this message [3.]. I really do not understand why is ssh connection dropped by OUTSIDE access-list [4.]? If I understand documentation correctly there is no impact for remote mangement/access like icmp, ssh, http(s) by interface access-list. So, why?
When I try ssh connection form internal network to INSIDE interface everything works fine and I can log in to ASA. If I try allow ssh in OUTSIDE access-list still no success and a get this message [5.]? It is strange, isn't?
The same problem with icmp if I want to "ping" OUTSIDE interface from internet a get thish message in log [6.] and configuration for ICMP like this [7.].
Full ASA config is in attachment.
Can anybody help how to fix it and explain what is exactly wrong.Thanks.
    Regards,
    Karel

  • Reception / Battery problems with iPhone 3GS after upgrading to iOS 4.2.1

There are major reception and battery problems with iPhone 3GS after upgrading to iOS 4.2.1.
I can not believe that Apple did not test this for major bugs like this one is.
I am a business user and can not effort to have bad reception. Apple wants to gain in the business clients... I never had this with my former BlackBerrys!
I need a reliable phone not a play thing like this is right now, it just needs it to work propely. And if a major bug like this comes along, fix it immediately. After the iPhone4 story, now this...incredible! Going back to my reliable BlackBerry! It just ain't reliable and takes forever to fix a problem.

I have the same issue after iOS 4.2.1 update. I am using iPhone 3GS officially unlocked by Apple. I tried using different SIM cards and both carriers show same problem when using phone in 3G mode. Phone falls back to EDGE mode showing 'E' from '3G' at start. I have reset the phone and rebooted several times and moved to different cell areas in the city just to verify the problem.
I had no such issues earlier. I also have Nokia E71 which shows full signal and has no such issues.
I have posted the bug on apple iphone feedback page. I hope they Apple will fix the problem and test the release properly on all models before releasing to public.

  • Has anyone ever had a problem with your iphone working outside your home but not inside. The internet works fine in and outside of the house

Has anyone had problems with your iphone working outside of the house, but not inside? Cannot make or receive calls, nor can I send or receive any text messages. This is something that just happened out of nowhere. Can I get some help please?

Did you used to have service and now suddenly you don't?
This happened to me a few years back, and several other iPhone users in my neighborhood, and after a while on the phone with AT&T they figured out that a technician had recently adjusted the receiver/sender on the tower and it was slightly off. They sent them back up and I actually had a better signal after than I did before it went out.
I would call AT&T and explain the issue you are having and see if they can fix it.
If you never had service there then like wjosten said it's probably just a bad zone.
Hope you get it sussed out.

Try deleting the account(s) you're having problems with, resetting your phone (hold on/off and home buttons simultaneously 10-15 seconds until Apple logo appears, release buttons and wait for it to restart), then add back your mail accounts.  I've read that this has worked for some.

  • Problems with Siri and Contacts (outside the US)

I have 3 major software problems (bugs) and i would like to report them in hopes that Apple would release a quick and prompt fix for these problems.
I think i speak for many when i say ever since the IOS 5 release users have noticed a major issues/problem with the format of their contacts and area/country codes.
    Problem # 1.
I live in Kuwait, and all my contact details have a country code (GSM) prefix +965 followed by 8 numbers. With the last IOS 5 release whether you add or remove the prefix the contact's name is not displayed on the caller ID. I tried to save the contact as it shows on my Caller ID but the problem presisted. I even tried switching international assist on and off and that didn't work either. There's a huge forum for Apple customers outside the US facing problems with their contacts and caller ID ever since IOS 5 was lanuched.
    Problem #2.
I have bought my Iphone 4S just few days ago, excited about Siri like many, i asked Siri to call George from my contacts, and Siri replies i'm sorry i can't call george, i tried all my contacts and all attempts failed, i tried adding the country prefix, and removing it and still Siri can't make calls from my own phone book (contacts). I do realize that Siri is in Beta, however, Siri did dial a US number perfectly from Kuwait, which tells me the problem is again related to where you are, and what country code format are you trying to call.
    Problem # 3.
When setting up Imessage, Kuwait is not listed in the countries of choice, not sure why but it would good if all the countries are listed.

Then report them to Apple here.  This is a user to user support forum.

i get intermittent reception when I stream music from I Tunes via Airport Extreme and Airport Express to powered speakers. I Tunes continues to play uninterupted on the Mac.  The problem does not lie with the Express as it occurs on both of my 2 Express at the same time. is this a problem with the Extreme?

Well, repying to my own post... Might have found the solution: I tried to do the same with a Macbook Pro 2010 using the very same setup. And it worked perfectly! No freeze, no nothing.
    One explanation I see:
my iMac is dating back to May 2007, a Core 2 Duo 2,16Ghz with 2 Go of RAM.
So the computer's characteristics (or the Wifi component or the combination of all of this) might be not robust enough to allow streaming to those 2 devices...
    Anyone's got anything to add?
