Problems with 655-MAX FISR

I have an MSI 655-MAX FISR motherboard and I installed a Radeon 9000 128mb Pro on it. I play counter-strike alot and on my old pc, like 2 or 3 months before I built this one it started to skip and I got this motherboard and it skips on counter-strike too. I play for like 10-15 seconds then I freeze for like 5-10 then I play for like 10-15 seconds again and so on. I have tried a Radeon 9700 Pro 128mb and it does the same thing and I have also tried different ram and it does the same thing. What could be causing this problem? Is it the fact that this motherboard only works with Geforce cards ? Plz help me! Thanks.
My Rig :
Pentium 4 2.41 GHZ with 533FSB
80 Gig Maxtor HD
550 Watt Power Supply
Radeon 9000 128mb Pro
512mb PC2100 266mhz - also tried 512mb PC2700 333mhz together and seperate
Kingwin K-11 Case

Did that already, when I uninstalled the drivers for 9000 and put in 9700 but it still did the same thing. What else could be the problem, I have tried alot of things and don't know what else to do. Help Plz :(

  • 655 Max FISR SATA & Video Card Troubles

    Hi all
I put together my 655 Max FISR (non HT) based system 3 weeks ago and have had nothing but problems (this is the third PC I've built and it's the only one to have caused major problems).  Initially the memory and video card were problematic, stopping me from installing Windows XP, but having read some of the other threads the poor old 655 seems to have lots of problems with various components.
My motherboard hated the Crucial Technology PC3200 512Mb memory (CT6464Z40B) I put in DIMM 1 and the MSI 5600U VTD-128 video card.  Anyway suffice to say I solved the problems easily enough.  I swapped the memory and the video card  over with that in my MSI 645e Max U (the video card was a Connect 3D Radeon 7500 for info).  The 645 runs beautifully with no problems whatsoever, unlike the 655!
I've now upgraded the Radeon 7500 to a Sapphire Radeon 9600XT which works really well. So if you are having problems with a card based on an nVidia chipset (which Win XP keeps saying has drivers that don't pass the compatability test) I'd try the ATI cards.
My main problem now is with the two Western Digital SATA drives I've got setup in a RAID 0 array.
Firstly I'm getting poor disk transfer rates (I used the SiSoftware Sandra utility to benchmark the file system, and got a really poor 23Mb/s).  As an example Windows XP loads up in 1 minute 8 seconds from power on, unlike the 645 with a 80Gb Maxtor DiamondMax 9 which does it in 45 seconds - I was getting Windows up in 32 seconds after initial installation of XP!!!  Now I know I've got PC2100 memory in this machine, but it seems to have got slower since I did a driver and Windows XP update (hope this isn't anything to do with the I've downloaded).
The second problem is a bit more serious, one of my Raptor drives keeps dropping off line when I run either the error checking or defragmentation tools in Windows.  The computer shuts down and re-boots only to tell me there's been a problem (a drive has failed or disconnected) before asking for a boot floppy. Fortunately, if I delete then redefine the array I get the system up and running again, but it is annoying!  Problem is, with the 655's reputation, I don't know whether I have a motherboard, cable or drive problem.  A limited trouble shoot by swapping over the drives has ascertained which one the system alleges to keep failing, but I'm now stuck, short of trying new cables, or buying a SATA RAID controller and sticking it in the 645 to see if it is one of the drives that's at fault.
So any ideas on the drive situation?
    Best regards

Apologies for being away for a while, been busy with work & sorting out a pair of bad Raptors drives!  Thanks for the replies from Hellwolf_36 and simps.
I can now report that after I'd worked out that I'd got not one but two damaged 74Gb WD Raptor drive (one had a lot of bad sectors and the other would take over two hours instead of 20 minutes to format which is why I was getting that stop message) and I had replaced the memory with one stick of the Kingston KV400X64C25/512 DDR, my 655 is now working quite well.  I haven't got round to checking if I've got the latest C-media driver installed though.
One thing I did do though was set up my Raptor drives as two independant arrays (C: & D:) rather than RAIDing them.  This is because, I didn't want to stripe the drives just in case of another failure, plus I have more flexibility over storage space not mirroring the drives, unti lI can afford to by another hard drive or two.  Anyway they're really fast in the first place.
For this motherboard I wouldn't bother with any other type of memory other than the KV400X64C25 as recommended on the MSI website, as it's quite fast and no hassle, (can't wait to get my second 512Mb so I can go back to dual channel!!)  Only problem is that the price has gone up a little bit over the past couple of months.
So apart from this MoBo being particular about graphics cards and memory it's not too bad.  My next challenges are too sort out the center/sub problem and network  this baby.

  • 655 MAX-FISR SATA RAID-0 ?

     ?(
I am running into a small problem while upgrading a high end workstation at work and wondered if anyone was having the same problem, or could provide some advice.  Here are the main specs.
    -MSI 655 MAX-FISR (MS-6730)  (No HT)
    -Antec 400W power supply
    -Intel P4 2.66Ghz 400/533Mhz Bus
    -Crucial (2 sticks) 512mb DDR PC2700
Aligned in DIMM 1+3 as recommended by MSI
    -MSI 128MB 8XAGP DDR Ti4200-Td8X
-Seagate (2 SATA) Barracuda Serial 80GB
     In Raid-0
Here is my problem, and small but painful so far.  The floppy controller on the 655 does not appear to be working.  It registers in the BIOS and is setup to be the first boot device.  When XP installation starts it asks to press F6 if you need to add SCSI,RAID,etc software.  I press F6, and about a minute later it asks for the floppy with drivers for the onboard promise SATA software.  Floppy does not initialize.  The power lite just stays on.  I tried to other floppy drives and another cable which I know work.  Still nothing.  I need to load this driver otherwise the SATA drives can not be seen by XP.  I even tried it a different way with Seagate DiscWizard, but the boot floppy does not work that way either.  I am thinking that the floppy controller on the board is bad.  All the hardware is setup / configured properly.  BIOS is all set.
Very frustrating, I hope that I am just missing something small. I have a tech support email sent to MSI.  Thanks in advance if you can help.

    Andy2 / Wonkanoby,
I will try flipping the cable now and the bios.  Only thing is that the cable and board both have the cable guide tab that normally prevents you from putting the cable on the wrong way.  Unless I really forced it on without paying attention.  I have to go to another office but thank you for your quick response.  Hopefully it is that simple.
Whipsnade, yes I have tried two other floppys and one other cable with the same results.  Hopefully I will have a postive post when I try Andy2 / Wonkanoby recommendations.
Thank you all for the quick response!

  • 655 MAX-FISR SATA RAID PORT

(wonkanoby, can you use the force to help me on this one?)
    Configuration:
MSI 655 Max FISR 6730 (non HT) MoBo
    Antec True 400W
    (2)Western Digital (10,000 rpm) Raptors
    Intel P4 2.66ghz
    MSI TI4800 8XAGP
    Plextor 48/40/48 burner
    MSI 52X CDROM
    Problem:
The second SATA port is not working (ser2)
both drives have been tested and work fine.  (ser1) shows the drives seperately in the array.  (ser2) does not show either of the drives.
I have tried tons of different configurations, cleared CMOS, re-seated everything, disabled/re-enabled SATA in bios, still nothing.
???Does anyone have any ideas/tricks to get this (ser2) port working correctly so I can setup both harddrives???
    Background:
I have already had to send back (MRA-NewEgg) this board one time because of a similar problem that I did not spend a lot of time troubleshooting.  I know that a lot of people are having problems and that the SiS 655 sucks! :O  This time I decided to troubleshoot and that it might be something small I was missing.  No such luck.  I do not feel like sending this back and losing another week of use on this workstation unless absolutely necessary.  I do have this same board on a similar system with (2)SATA Seagate 7200 drives and it works great.  I am really losing my respect for MSI though as I have never had a bad motherboard from other companies, and this is 2 in a row for MSI.  I even tried this:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/index.php?threadid=18931&boardid=10&sid=2ffcacaf0448de534331ac97aaa46912
    with no luck.
    Advice:
If I can't get this working and return, I really do not want to get another 655 board.  I have not read up yet on the (Canterwood 875P Chipset) boards from MSI.  Has there been similar issues / problems with SATA Raid as the 655 has?  Im thinking of just paying the restocking fee with NewEgg and going with an Intel Canterwood board.  Sure, the overclocking is not as good as other manufacturers, but this is a work machine so it won't be OC anyway.  I would rather go with stability.  Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

  • 655-max Fisr

    Hi,
I got some problems with my MSI 655-MAX FISR Motherboard. I play alot of Counter-Strike and when I play my comp freezes for about 5 seconds then I can move again for like 10-15 seconds then it freezes again for 5 seconds and so on. It does this over and over and frankly I don't know what the problem is. I have a Radeon 9000 128mb Pro and I tested a Radeon 9700 128mb Pro on it but it did the same thing. Could it be my memory or something???
    My Rig Is As Follows:
    Pentium 4 2.41Ghz
    Maxtor 80 Gig HD
    Xcase 550 Watt Power Supply
    PC2100 266mhz 512DDR RamRadeon 9000 128mb Pro
2 Front fans, 1 Rear fan, 1 Side Panel fan, plus the CPU and VGA fans.
Someone please help me with this problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dont forget now, Counter Strike is a Very Graphics Intensive 3D Game, And I am in NO way Knocking your Graphics Card But Understand that the Radeon 9000 is NOT Really Built For High Performance Gaming Card. You should Save up for a Higher Performance "Gaming GPU", I mean I have seen the All Powerful ATI-9700-Pro Advertized for $200.00US Dont Forget this Card was Over $400.00 1 Year AGO, and it is Just a Hair Bit Slower than the 9800-XT....Second, I think that You have answered your Own Question as Far as your Current RAM is Concerned, I mean I see where your 655-MAX Even Supports Up to PC-3200 (DDR-400MHZ) RAM >>> http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/product_detail.asp?model=655_Max-FISR   If you were to Get Even 512MB of some Either Corsair, or Kingston "Value Series" RAM, Your Bandwith would Increase by Leaps and Bounds .
Your Processor is Definitely Fast enough for Great Gaming, along with your MB. So if I were you, I would First Upgrade the RAM, and see where this Brings you, and you can Do this For about $100.00 Bucks. Then worry about updating Graphics Later, Especially if other than the Temporary "Lock-Ups" and resuming, You are Satisfied with the Overall Graphics Quality...............Sean REILLY875

  • Msi 655 max fisr ht ready: does it have fsb800 support?

i own msi 655 max fisr mobo, that supports ddr333 and fsb 533 as msi says. but it can handle also ddr 400 through overclocking and the bios has an option for fsb selection up to 250 mhz. according to me, this meens that one can use a cpu at fsb 800 by overclocking the mobo from the bios, even if it doesn't support the microcode of the cpu. does anyone have tested this statement, as at the time it is onlu speculation by me, as it is too expensive for my to buy new cpu and try it.
moreover, my revision of the mobo is stepping b0, thus it supports ht cpus and if it proves to support fsb 800 by overclocking, then i can keep it for a while, upgrading my system only with new cpu. i'll be thankful if anyone can provide me with some information on this topick.

What I am trying to explain is the downclocking of a DDR 400 RAM 1st to 333 Mhz then try to o/c to get DDR 400 or above, not saying that you are wrong.
Any board can support o/c'ing but it is all up to whether the hardwares that you have and their capability to do so as no one can actually determined whether or not the hardwares that you have will definately let you ends up the way it's really meant to be as there's always important facts being left out so it's always trial and error...
I have 2 of these systems running on the same mobo, but the highest I can reached with DDR 400 RAMs are just near DDR 400 not exactly 400 MHz and FSB are at near 170 quad = 170 x 4 = 680FSB... from a FSB 533 CPU. Both have different results as 1 is with DDR 333 RAMs o/c'ed to 380MHz on 2.8 B CPU and another with DDR 400MHz down to 333MHz then o/c'ed up to near 400Mhz on 2.8B CPU also...

  • 655 Max-FISR - Raid inaccessible

I just put together my new system today - MSI 655 Max motherboard - installed two identical new 80GB Seagate serial HDDs - everything started up just great - got the Raid 0 set up, installed WinXP and was busily installing software and devices (sound card, USB mouse, etc) when at one of the reboots I got the message "No array is defined".  I had probably rebooted a dozen times without incident prior to this.
When I go in to set the array back up, whether I try to use auto-setup or to redefine the array when I go to save I get the message "Error occurred when modifying array" - and the only option from there is to hit any key to reboot and go back into the same loop.
Both drives show up on the menu to define the array - they show as being "free" and not assigned to an array.  When I try to reassign them to an array and save I get the same error message.   ?(
I have tried resetting my CMOS, clearing ESCD in BIOS, reconnecting all the SATA cables, removing all the peripherals I had added (sound card, etc) with no luck at all.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

OK so check this out.. I put together my new Workstation with 655 Max.. Right?  Now I put it together with the tech at work.. Everything worked except the 10 mins wait to boot into windows.. And it happened right after I installed latest Nvidia Drivers..
That was going to be my on going problem to fix when I brought the machine home..  Now I get home power the machine.. Boom  my serial ata drive array can not be found.. I am like !!! so I reseat everything try all night.. nothing.. It shows up in the Serial ATA menu to create aray but when I go to do something.. Boom error creating must restart.  So I bring my machine back to work have the Tech look at it.. and what do you know.. Everything is fine.. Array shows up first time on.. Windows loads.. withthe 10 min wait.. SO I am like  We try 20 times in a row.. Nothing always finds Aray..
Now I go home with my machine looking to trouble shoot the video card right?  Wrong.. Can't find Aray.. Now I plugged my machine in every single Outlet in my Apartment and I even used a APC and without a APC>. still can't find the Array.. Now I am thinking that people having this problem might be having fluxuations or Nosie in the electric.  That is the only outcome I can come up with.. And for some reason I take it these Serial Ata drives must be very sensitve.. or the Motherboard must be sloppy or something.. I am not that technical but I can figure this much out so far.. Anyone want to back me up with my THeory?

  • Help with 655 Max and Possible Memory Problems...

Just recieved my 655 Max and have put my system together, but when I turn it on it makes a constant beeping sound. I tried taking out both memory sticks, lol, and turning it on and the sound stops, I tried putting in one memory stick and the sound starts again.
I suppose this is a memory problem.
by the way I am using Corssair 256mb CMX256a-3200C2 memory.

[The alarm that you are getting is the CPU Fan Alarm you will have to diable it in the Bios. I am using a Vantec Aeroflow  heatsink and my CPU alarm also is constantly on and was very annoying till I disabled it. My system still doesn't boot to XP yet as I have RMA'd bothe the MB and Ram.   QUOTE]Originally posted by TritonB7
Hey Kaiguy the comp does continue to make sounds till I shut the system off. And I'm not sure how a standard pc tone sound would sound like, :(. But it does make beep followed by a lower pitched beep, and it repeats this till I shutdown the system.
    (1) I cannot Access Bios.
    (2) I have two sticks of Corsair 256mb CMX256a-3200C2 memory. I do not have any other ram available that will be compatible with this motherboard. Ive tried using one stick at a time in each of the slots. No Luck.
I highly think that both sticks not working is very unreal.
    (3) and reseting bios by the jumper isnt working either.
I can probably try buying some diffrent memory, or returning the whole mobo and exchanging it for the same one.
By the way on my monitor when i turn the comp on it says 8x Extreme or something close to it while the comp is beeping. I doubt that, that has anything to do with it. This is my first MSI board :( , I've always been an Asus person but Im still open for MSI i'm sure I just recieved a faulty board.

  • Problems with Mpower Max Z87

Since yesterday i have the following problem with my pc.
i'm using a gigabyte gtx780 windforce 3x oc als peg and for now its not working anymore. if i am turning on the computer only the fans are working and video display is only possible through the igd, even when its deactivated in bios. all other components seem to work normal, but led debug code ist showing 04 which means "power on southbridge initialization".
so i changed the gtx 780 to my old msi gtx570 twin frozr III and everything seems to work normal for now, but if i am looking into the device manager there's an exclamation mark indicating that the msi mpower max z87 isn't recognized properly and only shown as unknown device.
so, what does that mean? is there a problem with the psu, mb or the gtx780
    my system specs are:
    Core i7 4770k
MSI Mpower Max Z87 Bios V.1.2
Gigabyte Geforce GTX780 Windforce 3x OC
16 GB Corsair Vengeance 2133 Mhz
    Corsair HX850
    Windows 8 Pro x64
Edit: The exclamation mark problem disappeared after installing the intel smart connect utility.

Reseat the cpu and check socket for bent pins. If none to be found uninstall current vga driver in safemode using >>Driver Fusion<<. After reboot with the GTX570 install latest Nvidia driver (no beta!).
reseated cpu and found some bent pins. rebent them with precision tools, and for now, everything, even the gtx780, seems to work normal. will try some decent oc to check if there are any problems left because of the bent cpu pins.

  • Help! Problems with 845E MAX HSF seating

have a MSI 845E MAX and a P4 2.8 GHz cpu. I bought a coolmaster L71 for 478 socket type but when I put it on the cpu, the four little plastic white pins that hold the HSF mounting tray in place prevents the HSF from actually connecting with the CPU unless I use a load on paste (which is wrong)
If I take out the pins the HSF sits on the CPU fine but surley this cannot be correct? Has anyone else had this problem or have any ideas why?
I have also tried a mates P4 S478 HSF and it does the same, the four pins seem to stop it touching the cpu correctly.
    Party

What's up? I got your Email - I don't know about cutting those pins off. Man, that really sucks those heatsinks aren't fitting correctly. What would be wrong with getting a stock Intel fan/heatsink? They are really cheap. I saw one for $7 shipped. Or get the f/h I have. It's a Coolermaster D14-7H53D. However, if you want to try and cut those pins go ahead because you can always buy a new bracket if it doesn't work. Let me know what happens. Good luck.
Man, you can't say (s)ucks in this forum.

  • 6730 (655 Max-FISR) RAID BIOS menu - how to enter?

    Hey all,
according to http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=424, this model (6730) should have RAID 0 or 1 support.
But I can't quite figure out anything in the BIOS menu of it that has to do with this. So I installed two Serial ATA hdds onto my motherboard, and they are being detected just fine, no problem at all. So according to the Serial ATA menu, I start installing win2000 and do the F6 and S stuff, loading the drivers for the SATA drives. Then when I get to where it asks me where to install windows too, I get TWO harddrives listed for me to choose from, not one (I'm trying to do RAID 0 btw).
Well coming to think about it, that's logical: I did not set ANYTHING in the BIOS about the drives being in RAID -- I read some guides online on how to install RAID drives -- supposedly you press Ctrl-F to enter the BIOS for RAID controller and set RAID0, RAID1 and those stuff there. Where is this RAID BIOS menu for the MS-6730 motherboard?
most threads I read here, when people talk about doing RAID, most people get through the step "configure the hdds as RAID 0/1" really quickly by a mention with a sentence -- I think that's the part I'm stuck on. Maybe my question should be... how do I enter the RAID BIOS for this motherboard at all? The manuals that came with the mobo don't really have anything on RAID *at all*...
    [edit]
btw... I'm new to RAID arrays, so I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. I put my two (identical) hdds one connected to ser1 and one connected to ser2, on the motherboard. is that how you are supposed to do it? they are WD Caviar SATA drives (120gb) btw. jumpers shouldn't be a problem, the WD web site says for a SATA drive, the jumpers are only for power settings, no master/slave things.
    Thanks for any help.

well assuming you have connected the sata lead and a power connector all i can think is your psu is very poor on the 12v line, how many amps does it give
you might try the jumper bit in the link as well
you will have to paste the full link in

  • External USB 2.0 HDD Problems with 648 Max

I'm getting I/O error and/or very slow read performance from an external Maxtor HDD when I use the rear USB ports that came with my 648 Max. When I use the front ports on my case, I get very good read and write performance. I installed a firewire card and it also works very well. Why can't I use the ports that are connected to the motherboard?

ok i dont have the manual with me to make sure if this is correct or not but you can check yours.
i know that alot of the newer motherboards have a mixture of 1.1 usb and 2.0 so it is possable that the msi 648 is the same (again look at your manual) and if so you might be hooking it up to your 1.1 port whereas your case usb is hooked to your 2.0 usb ports.
this is just a guess but it is worth checking out in your manual. hope this helps.

  • Problem with Select MAX( field ) in OO

    Hi all,
    I have this statement:
SELECT SINGLE RUECK MAX( RMZHL ) BUDAT STZHL
          INTO K_CONFIRM
            FROM AFRU
              WHERE AUFNR EQ P_ORDER
                AND VORNR EQ P_OPER
GROUP BY RUECK RMZHL BUDAT STZHL.
My requirement is I need to use a work area (not an internal table) and ENDSELECT is not allowed. The result is not selecting the Maximum RMZHL, it will always return the first record.
How can I correctly do this in OO? Thanks in advanc.e

If you use GROUP BY in your query then the set functions (MAX,SUM, Count) not possible...
