Problems with a CompUSA Demo Emac

My mother purchased a G4 Emac from compUSA about 6 months ago. The Emac was a floor demo unit, and they did not restore the computer prior to our picking it up. It came pre-loaded with Iphoto 5, and the ususal programs.
I got my mother to start using Iphoto about a month ago, and after losing two batches of photos on the machine, I have come to the conclusion that The CompUSA setup must have a maintenance routine that erases all the JPG files in the Iphoto library every night.
Of course, we do not have the backup disk, but I do have the startup disk that came with my Imac. It is listed as OSX 10.4.6. But I don't know if it will work with my mothers G4 Emac.
I am not an Apple expert... What are my options for getting rid of these mainteance routines? Do I need to reload the Machine?
Thanks,
C. Alan

I'm not familiar with iPhoto (having been a Graphic Converter user from before OS 9), so all I can really offer re the loss of iPhoto albums is to post the question in the iPhoto part of the Apple Discussions. If you or your mother remember the names of any of the missing photos, try searching for those files at the hard drive level --- I'd bet the photos are still on the hard drive, and iPhoto's database needs to be rebuilt. You might also warn your mother not to move iPhoto's album contents around or manipulate then in any other graphics program, as that does seem certain to confuse iPhoto.
If there's any question about background applications or scripts, start by checking the contents of Library/StartupItems and Library/PreferencePanes. I doubt CompUSA has the technical enterprise to manipulate the actual cron maintenance scripts to add extra actions such as wiping the iPhoto library. Performing an Archive and Install would replace any hacked maintenance scripts. There needs to be at least 5 GB free space on the hard drive to do an A&I.
Your iMac's 10.4.x install disc won't work on the eMac; model-specific OS X discs are only certain to have the hardware drivers for the particular model with which they were bundled, and with Tiger, Apple set the discs so that the model-specific discs will only run on that model line.
Presumably that store sold the eMac at a very heavy discount if there were no OS X Restore / Software Restore DVDs included (meaning, the store lost the discs or couldn't be bothered to look for them in the back). Knowing CompUSA, it's a near-zero probability that they'd offer to sell your mother a retail Tiger install disc at a steep discount so that she's be able to perform an Archive and Install is necessary. It's possible to call the Apple store, go through the steps to get a human operator, and ask to buy a replacement set of the eMac specific discs that should've come with the computer. Apple sells such sets for less than the retail Tiger disc, and the set would include the bundles applications as well. Have the eMac serial number and model information handy when you call.

  • Problem with Illustrator video demo

Using Captivate 6, I am trying to make a video demo explaining how to use the Pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. Every time I hold down Alt to make a corner point between curves with the Pen tool, the recording has a super long delay and that makes the recording and inaccurate.
I had this problem when using Captivate 5 full motion recording, and it persists with the new video demo feature in Captivate 6.
If anyone knows how to make a video demo of using the Pen tool in Illustrator, I hope that you will reply to this discussion.

    Hi Jay,
Have created video demo's for my Photoshop class, for using the Pen tool and was so glad that this worked. There is a little waiting needed when changing the status of a point with ALT but it doesn't block and the cursors are recorded fine. I trim out the waiting time with the editor. Will try on Illustrator to see if I have more issues there, but I'm not using Illustrator as regularly as PS. It seems like the ALT is causing some 'reflection time' for Captivate. I have a rather performant Desktop PC (WIndows Experience Index = 7,7), do not know if it is linked to that.
Opened Illustrator CS6, and it seems I do not need to use ALT to convert a point from smooth to a corner? The convert cursor is automatically there when hovering over a point. But tried with ALT as well, and there is indeed a waiting time, little bit longer than in PS but then I can ove on. I didn't measure, think it is between 2 and 3secs, whereas in PS it is less than 2secs. Editing an existing path/shape, where you need ALT to change a point, results in about the same waiting time; will try to get some information.

  • OC4J 9.0.3 (date 07/31) problem with the MDB-demo and Oracle9i-databases (v9.*)

Trying to get the supplied mdb-demo to work in the J2EE 1.3 certified version of OC4J 9.0.3 (from 07/31).
It works fine with the OJMS-provider in a Oracle 8i v8.1.7 database but not in a Oracle9i database.
I have now tried three possible versions of Oracle9i available from OTN and Metalink:
    - v9.0.1.1
    - v9.0.1.3.1
    - v9.2.0.1
I have noted from the "known-issue-page" that the supported version is v9.0.1.3 with patch #2416054 applied. Unfortunately is that patch only available for Solaris as of today...
I all cases I get one and the same error message from the CartEJB - bean in OC4J:
    CartEJB::send2Queue: begin; item=QueueqSNDQUE|Queue
    CartEJB::send2Queue; Exception occurred: oracle.jms.AQjmsException: ORA-06550: l

    ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
    PL/SQL: Statement ignored
    CartEJB::send2Queue: end
Is there some post-installation-step that I missed (e.g. copying som jar-fil from Oracle9i to OC4J...) or is there anything else I can do to get the supplied MDB demo working with Oracle9i?
    Thanks in advance,
    Magnus Larsson.

    Ok...
    Thanks for your help!
So I will stick with Oracle8i v8.1.7 until the patch is available on Windows...
Maybe I'll make a try with Linux also (thanks for noting me!), but probably will the Windows patch be available before I succeed with Oracle9i on Linux...
I will post a reply once I get the patch working on either Linux or Windows!

  • Minor question / problem with OWB 10gR2 demo tutorial

Hi, I'm working on the OWB tutorial demo for 10gR2 that was just released, and have a question. At the start of the chapter on "Designing ETL Data Flow Mappings", as part of the workflow manager install instructions, it says to execute the following:
    grant owb_o_rep_owner to owf_mgr;
I can't find the role owb_o_rep_owner anywhere - should this instead be owb_o_owb_owner?
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

One more question - does anyone know how to install the demo / tutorial on a different server? I.e. I've had the DBAs get OWB installed on a QA server, but they are busy and don't have time to do the install of the tutorial. Can I install it remotely some way (note that when I tried, I kept getting errors from OMB saying it couldn't deploy things remotely or something).
    Thx in advance,
    Scott

First I could try to configure my DB in Oracle Confuguration Assistant but I couldn't to add examles schemas there.

    and etc.
Please help me to install SH Schema in exists DB may be anybody resolved this issue.

The document you are refering to is OK, but it assumes you already have installed the demo files.
In order for the demo to be installed and working, some requirements must be met.
You must have installed DB10g Enterprise Edition, as demos such as SH require the partitioning option, available only on E.E.
Start a second installation from the companion disk, start your oracle installer, select Database Products, verify the Oracle Home details are the same as those of your Oracle Home, confirm the action and install.
At the end of the installation you must see these directories at the $ORACLE_HOME/demo/schema directory:
    bus_intelligence  mk_dir.sql.ouibak    mkunplug.sql   sales_history
    human_resources   mk_dir.sql.ouibak.1  mkverify.sql   shipping
    info_exchange     mkplug.sql           order_entry    sted_mkplug.sql.dbl

  • PI Demo Examples problems with executing CTC template for client setup

    Dear SAP community,
I use PI 7.30 SP 4 and get the following exception if I use the CTC template to set up the PI demo examples in client 105
    and 106
    Web Services Configuration
    Description
    Exception in step "SRT_TECHNICAL_SETUP"
    Exception details : java.lang.Exception: BAPIRET2 SRT_ADMIN 050 Could not create service destination
    State
    Step was skipped
In client 107, the template works after I delete the SAP_WSRT user. In clients 105 and 106, this leads to the exception above,
If the  SAP_WSRT user exists, I get the exception that this user alreadz exists if I run the template.
What should I do to fix this problem and properly implement the template on all clients?
PS: I use admin users with SAP_ALL  rights. Maybe I use the wrong master password, because I use the one of my SAP_ALL user. This works at least for using the template within client107.
    Andreas

    Hi Mark,
in my case the workaround of deleting the service user works only in Client 107.
The additional problem with a missing service destination occurs already after deleting the service user in Clients 105 and 106. Will this additional problem also be treated in the new note?
Joerg-Joachim Klossika already added the workaround to this note for the existing service user I proposed to him.
I still cannot resolve the problem with the missing service destination.
    regards

  • [SOLVED?] Problem with multi key macros in emacs

I recently made the switch from gentoo to arch, for the most part everything is up and working. The only thing I am having a problem with is GNU emacs, for some reason i can't use some macros that need more than 2 keys to be pressed. For example M-< will not work but for some reason C-_ will. I haven't got the faintest clue as to what the problem is. I am running xfce and using the us keyboard layout. If i run emacs outside of X than all the macros work fine. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

seeing as this problem persists in both the terminal and gui versions i don't think that is possible. I also tried running both versions in twm to see if anything was different. The keys still aren't seen correctly but this time they are replaced with random characters that are not part of my keymap. An X11 problem or keyboard configuration problem?

  • Problem with Internet connection sharing between eMac and Powerbook G3

    Hi,
I seem to be having a slight problem with internet connection sharing.
My eMac is the main machine with the internet connection, and its running 10.4.6, the Powerbook G3 is running 10.2.8.
I can connect them all up and get online with both, but I the problem I am having is when I turn the Firewall on on the eMac, the powerbook can't connect.
Is there anyway I can keep the Firewall enabled and still use internet connection sharing?

How do I know which ports the Powerbook is using?
Also I had web sharing enabled on the eMac and it made no difference at all.
Plus I don't know if this means anything to you, trying to decipher it myself, all I can make out myself on there is port 80.

  • Start up problems with Jag/eMac

I'm having problems with my eMac starting up with Jag (latest version). BEHAVIOR: It hangs after the gray Apple, after the blue screen with the extensions and gives only a blue screen (mouse in upper left hand corner of screen) and appears to blink to a slightly lighter blue screen then back.
    Here's what I've tried.
    1) Boot to Safe Mode (hold down shift key right after start up chime). Results: gives gray Apple, blue screen with extensions loading showing 'Safe' then blue screen as in BEHAVIOR (above).
    2) Boot from OS X Jag install disk (hold down C key after start up chime), run Disk Utility to Repair Permissions & Repair Disk. Results: permissions repaired; disk repaired (but gives msg 'overlapped extent allocation file 1294823d/1294824d" even when Repair Disk done at least 2x, probably 4x). Restart gives BEHAVIOR above.
    3) Boot to the OS 9 install disk (came with computer). Results: starts the install CD but I get error message that hard drive cannot be mounted and asks if I want to initialize (which I don't).
    4) Zap PRAM (hold down Cmd-Opt-P-R as I power up, wait for 5 chimes; then restart). Results: see BEHAVIOR above.
    5) Boot in Target mode (hold down T after start up chime). Results: able to mount the eMac hard disk on my iBook (Panther) and recover files. Ran Repair Disk from the Panther Disk Utility on the mounted eMac hard disk (found the same 'overlapped extent' error message found above). I get the message "The volume eMac HD was repaired successfully. Repair attempted on 1 volume HFS volume repaired." But on reboot, I get the same BEHAIVIOR above.
    6) Hardware test (from CD that came with eMac, ver 1.2.1) was run. Results: all passed (ran it 2x with same results).
Is this one of those 'overlapped' problems that nothing else will (easily) will work except a) backup files (via FW) and b) erasing hard disk and reinstall?
Is Disk Warrior really that good? Good enough to fix this without having to back, erase and reinstall the OS?
    Thanks,
    Richard
eMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   multiple systems

Thanks for the Apple doc. I followed the directions (new terratory for me) and successfully removed the overlapped files. But my system gave the same behaviour (wouldn't start up), even after the overlap was not detected via Disk Repair or fsck).
So I did an erase and install (after backup via target mode) from my system disks, downloaded all the updates, etc. And I can get a system start!
But now I cannot add a printer to the Print Center. Argh (never had these kinds of problems with Macs before; usually an erase/install cures all).
I've repaired permissions, run everything I can find with the Printer Center Repair v. 3.0.3 from www.fixamac.net, rebooting after everything tried. Still the Print Center unexpectedly quits when I try to add a printer.
I'm poking around the Printing & Faxing discussion group but not turning up anthing that works. Any Ideas?

  • Problems with my eMac. NEED YOUR HELP!

    Hai,
I'm new right here, and i'm not very good at english, but I have problems with my eMac so I hope that someone can help me!
When I boot my Emac there's a screen that says:'
'to continye booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return.'
    When I typed mac-boot I pressed enter(because I don't know the return-button) and then I get this screen:
'panic(cpu0): Unable to find driver for this platform: PowerMac6,4'
and other text with a lot of numbers.
    Also in that screen stands:
'you need to restart your computer. hold the power button for several seconds or press the restart button'
I hold the power butten for several seconds and I put the computer on again, but than I'm getting the same texts&things.
So, can anyone help me, or do I have to go to the Macstore?(Does anybody know how much that costs?)
    Thanks for reading& maybe helping!
    Kisses from Amsterdam!

There are so many unknowns here it is hard to know the right advice to give.
+I didn't get any disks with it. Do you know if I can buy them somewhere?+
You may be able to get 10.4 Tiger disks from an Apple store, but that depends on where you live. Apple usually only sells their latest OS which is currently 10.5 Leopard, but I would think your eMac would be best with 10.4 Tiger. If you can get them from an Apple store, ask if they give a student discount if you are eligible as that can be a saving.
Normally every Mac, _new or used has its own disks,_ including an Apple Hardware Test CD. These disks are useful if you want to reinstall your operating system, but also useful for diagnostics and and some software repairs. The thing is, you could get hold of some disks and still find your machine has something broken in the hardware, and you will have spent money on the disks for nothing.
It would be better to determine if the computer is fixable before you purchased any OS disks.
Do you know anyone with an Apple computer who has some disks you could borrow? Or do you know someone who has an iBook which you could use in
FireWire target disk mode to connect the two together , and use the Disk utility in the iBook to run a test on your hard drive.
Even without a disk, you could still try starting up your computer in single user mode and perform some of the steps in this article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1411?viewlocale=en_US
which assumes you have 10.3.9 which you may have seeing as it is an old computer.
