Problems with a Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT

Hey Guys,
Alright so....I bought a refurbished Mac Pro from the Apple Store about 2 weeks ago. The first thing i did was upgrade the RAM up to 10 gb add a second Hard Drive and a new Nvidia graphics card. So far all of them work great, and i havnt seen any problems. The graphics card was the most challenging thing for me to install, because i dont have much experience with installing graphics cards. The card works great to my knowledge and it shows up in my system profiler. But the reason i wanted to buy the card was for running applications on my Vista Partition, that is run by Parallels. And that is where im having the problems. at first i tried to run a game and it showed up but it was very off center....50% of the window wasnt showing up on my screen, like it wasnt lined up correctly, but i figured i just needed to mess around with it a little bit, i didnt mess with it then and then went out of town and came back 3 days later and graphics on Vista (not just when i run the programs but when from the log in screen) are very messed up, everything shows up but the colors arnt blended together, its hard to describe without showing a picture.
But so far everything on OSX runs fine, and i havnt really encountered any problems. I never uninstalled the ATI Radeon 2600 that came with the computer because i didnt see the harm in having two.
The Graphics Card was bought threw the Apple Store, so the only solutions i can think of are that a) i need to download new drivers for the vista partition to accept it, but where would i get them because the Mac Version doesnt have any drivers because a Mac shouldnt need them, right? and then b) that its just some weird problem with Vista and i should just delete the partition and reinstall it. or C) i made some sort of error when installing but that wouldnt explain why its fine when using OSX, unless OSX is still running of the ATI Radeon primarilly....
Any suggestions would be great

Vista on a Mac Pro graphics is the same as on any PC system, you need to get the drivers, and you may need to uninstall and delete the ones Windows or Apple installed (BootCamp 2.x you installed off your Leopard DVD).
However, you aren't going to get the level of graphics performance that you will running in a VM as you do natively.
Early on with Fusion, it would over-write the "good" graphics drivers though that is now fixed I'm sure, but I never went back to Fusion and just run Ultimate natively.

Having ATI and Nvidia cards and drivers together might cause problem - maybe someone else knows better about that.
The Mac does need drivers. The OS X drivers are bundled into 10.5.x updates. Windows is still Windows and different OS and needs drivers.

  • Photoshop CS4 Issues with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800?

I have an Mac Pro Intel 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Xeon with 6GB RAM running OS X 10.5.5 and an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT driving two monitors.
I just installed Adobe Photoshop CS4 fresh from a factory CD.
When I perform a Distort -> Lens Correction or do a Free Transform to rotate an image an arbitrary amount, and then follow that with a resize (tried 133% and 166%), the image ends up with a pattern of gray plaid overlaid -- especially visible in the darkest shadows. The pattern appears only on the rotated layers of an image.
This pattern persists if I quit and restart Photoshop, BUT -- there's no pattern visible if I open the same image in Photoshop CS3. It only appears in CS4.
This is easy to reproduce -- I just tried it with an image I created in Photoshop at 5x7" at 240dpi and filled with solid black.
I dropped a Bug Report to Adobe, and they wrote back suggesting "This is most likely an issue with your video card driver."
Anybody else out there having this issue? Anyone with an identical setup want to test this?

I'm seeing what you are talking about when viewing at 200% and up on my 300dpi images. I'm thinking that its the new pixel grid overlay for dialing in the details on the image.
No, that's not it. I can see it at 100%, and only on images that have been rotated and resized.
In fact, yesterday I rotated one layer under an unrotated layer, and only the rotated layer showed the plaid pattern.
And it's not a simple grid -- it's a real plaid-like gray, almost like stretch marks.

  • Problem with MSI Nvidia GeForce 6800 LE (128MB) when playing 3D games

    Games problem
I have bought a new MSI Nvidia GeForce 6800 LE (128MB) a couple of months ago and have been have loads of trouble when playing games.
In windows, the graphics card works fine. The computer never crashes and everything is speedy. Movies on DVD, Xvid, Divx all play fine without problem, the most I get is the occasional freezing and then windows will be normal again.
The problem arises when I try to play a 3D game. When I load up the game it goes into the menu screens ok, the computer will load up the 3D engine and it will play for around a minute nice and crisp then the screen will go blank and computer will lock up. Then all the drives will go quiet and the computer will make 3 beeps with the PC speaker. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL at this point does nothing, nor does the reset button. I have to turn the power on and off.
I really have no clue why this is happening, I have taken the covers off and kept it in a cool area, hoping that it was something to do with over heating, my computer is not overly cluttered and this has made no difference.
I have also unplugged the CDR, DVDR, USB ports, one Hard drive (storage) to see if it was something to do with the power no getting to the Videocard and then tried to play a game and the same problem arose.
I have two games that I have tried, Tiger woods 2005 and doom III, both of which crash in the same manner.
I have tried to be as detailed as I can with the descritopn of my computer below and the power details I'm not sure about so I posted a picture of the power unit to help.
Many thanks for your help in this matter, I'm desperately trying to get some worth out of this card and feel frustrated that its going bonkers only when trying to play games :/
Please tell me if you require further information about the system.

Firstly, thank you for all your prompt responses, I really appreciate it. From the sounds of it, the PSU is ****
    antec
From what I have read, the Antec PSUs have good reliability and ratings. I looked around and saw this one: Antec NEOPower 480W ATX PSU for around £65. I also went read that article posted by Dr Stu, which then stumbled on more articles about PSUs.
    I have a couple more questions….
The rating of my system (http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/Power_Supply_Calculator.php) with all the components running came out to be 422W.  So do you think that the Antec NEOPower 480W ATX PSU would be sufficient for the computer considering I might add more RAM in the future?
Or should I buy the 500W+ one then?
Does anyone know if the Antec PSUs are quiet? My current q-Tec one makes me feel I'm in an aeroplane.
    lucky I read the forum!
I was in Maplins (computer shop) at lunch and thought, that shiny 650W Q-Tec looks nice and there looks like loads of power, that much do the trick. i got to the counter and thought.....let me wait, till i get home from work and read some more on the forum about this PSU issue.
Thanks god I didn’t buy that S***. having read some of the reviews, i would have wasted loooots of money for nothing.

  • Rare Problem with latest NVidia GeForce 8600m GT

I downloaded apple's nvidia update from here for windows xp:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306891
After installing it everything seemed to work fine, my dvi to video adapter was working like a charm.
Now my problem was that after a few minutes I was unable to open any programs, like i'd double click Internet Explorer and it'd flash and close, I couldn't right click, I couldn't even see the shutdown menu or click anything in the start menu. Also when I was able to right click I'd see nView options at the bottom stackd like 4 times.
If anyone knows anything about this issue and how to fix it or what happened please let me know ASAP. I did a system restore to downgrade my nvidia drivers to the stock ones that came with the leopard disk.
By the way after downgrading I cant use the dvi to video adapter via windows.
I am using a Macbook Pro 15.4" 2.4gHz - im running Windows XP Sp2 with bootcamp.

The following drivers are provided by apple and solve the problem for me. After installation get into nvidia settings and allow to adjust TV settings automatically..
If you use Windows XP: http://download.info.apple.com/MacOS_X/OTHER/BCNVIDIA/WinXP32(167.44).exe
If you use Windows Vista: http://download.info.apple.com/MacOS_X/OTHER/BCNVIDIA/WinVista32(167.44).exe
    I hope this helps!

  • NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT and 10.5.7

The OpenGL problems with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT video appear to be fixed in 10.5.7.
No screen artifacts, no screen redraw issue so far.

Very nice.  My 3d objects no longer turn white while painting on them or manipulating them, though painting into the surface appears to be considerably slower than it used to be.
edit: I have an m8600GT, but had OpenGL issues which are resolved nonetheless.

  • NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS issue

I have a 24 inch iMac with a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS video card. The computer is out of warranty.
A while back I noticed that, while playing World of Warcraft, the computer would have a sort of graphical glitch and then freeze up.
This happened a few times, infrequently, until finally the computer would not start at all.
At the startup screen with the apple logo, the wheel would spin a minute, then pixels would appear all over the screen and it would freeze. The screen would then turn to a bright orange color and stay that way.
I took it in to the mac store, where I was told the video card had failed.
They replaced the video card, which I had to pay for, due to the computer being out of warranty.
I have had the new video card now for about two weeks. I just loaded World of Warcraft for the second time on it. After playing for less than 20 minutes, the screen glitched out (pixelated flashes) and then froze.
I am now afraid to play the game.
I have never had the computer freeze while doing anything else.
Considering I just spent $600 to replace the last video card, is there anything I can do to figure out what exactly is causing this problem?
    Thanks.

    Hi Riley71
I'm not sure what you were charged $600 for, but I would take it back and either ask for my $600 back or that it be fixed correctly.

  • Yet another problematic iMac 24" - 3.06Ghz - Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS

My iMac 24" (Early 2008) - 3.06Ghz - Model A1225 with the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS card does not work properly.
I purchased my machine in September of 2008 and the issues began about four years later, in late sprin of 2012.
When the screen/display/video problems started, I got blue or pink screen startup failures, beachballing, crazy static lines through the screen, sometimes beeps or screen flickers. All of this started four years after buying it—and it is NOT unreasonable to expect a $3200 machine to last far more than four years.
When my machine stopped working I spent hours over doing diagnostics, reseating the RAM, a reinstall of the OS, all to no avail.
Digging for information on the Internet pointed to so very many other owners of this machine type having the same problem! But the cost to repair the card, as reported time time again, was close to $900. Angry and bitter, I boxed up my machine and started saving—and went back to using my 20” white G5 iMac (no problems with this machine, thank heavens!).
Is there any recall movement in effect? I don’t want to have to pay 900 or so dollars to repair a video card that is inherently defective!
Nvidia recently admitted to having produced lots of faulty Geforce cards for their laptops but also stated that there could be other products with similar faults (http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1045810/000119312508145974/d8k.htm). They have set aside about $150 million to redress the matter.
There is a UK forum dedicated to helping laptop owners with problematic Nvidia cards get help and they have started fielding quesitons from iMac owners, as well (
    http://www.nvidiadefect.com/apple-imac-24-early-2008-imac8-1-defect-geforce-8800 -gs-t3813.html).
Is anyone else an unhappy owner of an early iMac 24" (Early 2008) - 3.06Ghz - Model A1225 with the Nvidia Geforce 8800 GS?

After a lengthy long-distance call to Apple Tech Support, both agents I spoke to told me that this is the first time they have heard about this issue. There are no repair protocols in place for this make and model of iMac with these issues.
I asked the senior of the two again, just to clarify, if this was the first time he heard about such a problem and he said yes. I then asked him if he knew the subject was being discussed here on the Apple Support Communities forum and he said that this forum is for users and is not used by them. I asked him if he thought it would make sense for Apple Techs to be up to date about common repair issues being discussed on Apple's own forums, and he said that he can't speak for Apple. I then asked him his opinion about the matter and he said, "I suppose so."
The "suppose so" line told that that I would get nowhere with him. I just hope the authorized repair center I visit is more up to date about this problematic iMac build that Apple's own Tech Support staff are.
    Shame on you, Apple!

  • NVidia GeForce 8800 GT *and* GeForce GTX 285 in a Mac Pro?

    Hi,
my Mac Pro came with an nVidia GeForce 8800 GT, and I've now bought an extra GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition (for the Compute Level 1.3 double precision floating point capability in CUDA).
(Everything bought from the Mac Store)
I wasn't aware that I was expected to throw away the GeForce 8800 GT , what with the other three PCI-e slots being free.
The GTX 285 (max requirement: 204 W) requires two extra PCI-e power connectors. The 8800 GT (max: 110 W) uses one. There are only two available from the motherboard though.
So, *although I realize this isn't supported*, has anyone else managed to scrounge some current from somewhere else on the motherboard?
I'm only using one hard drive and one optical drive and no other PCI-e cards. Surely the power supply (around 1000 W ?) can supply the extra?
Does anyone know how much current the PCI-e extra power connectors are rated for?
    Thanks,
    colin

Search long enough and you may find...
    According to this
    http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#pciexpress
The PCI-e slot can supply up to 75 W, whilst a 6 pin cable can provide another 75 W.
    So:
    2 PCI-e slots + 2 auxiliary 6-pin connector = 300 W
"Even with only two 12 volt lines the standard implementation of PCI Express power cables use large enough gauge wire and a good enough connector to provide much more than the three amps per wire required to provide 75 watts. Nonetheless, the 6 pin PCI Express power cable officially provides only 75 watts. *In all likelihood, however, real implementations of this power cable can provide far more than 75 watts.* "
    Hmmm

  • My Mac Pro (2006) with NVidia GeForce 8800 GT is not detecting a second display.  What can I do?

My Mac Pro w/ NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT does not detect a second display from the System Preferences / Displays.  Even though I select the "Detect Displays" button, nothing happens.  I also have Bootcamp and Windows 7 in a partition on my drive.  When I operate with Windows 7, there is no problem detecting both of my displays.  However, when I operate with Windows 7, there is no sound signal sent from my sound card.  When I switch back to the OS X then I get a sound feed from the sound card, but then it will not detect more than one monitor.  I'm ready to pull out my hair.  Anyone have suggestions?

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

  • Running ATI Radeon x1900 XT along with NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Possible?

Can I run the ATI Radeon x1900 XT along with NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT together in my mac pro?

The X1900 would have to go in double wide slot, you would have to run one or both at 8x.
I think something like ATI 2600 might make more sense. The 8800GT is listed as discontinued (have a thread or two about it being EOL). So unless you have the 8800GT may not be an option anyway.
The 4870 + 2600 combo would be best I can think of for us with 1st gen now.
This assumes you simply need to drive 3 monitors. And don't want to wait and see if the Nvidia eVGA GTX 285 (doubtful) will support 1st gen EFI32's.

  • IMac Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS Drivers

I am running XP Professional via Boot Camp. I run XP so I can play America's Army since it is a Windows only based game. The problem I am having is when I expand Americas Army full screen it completely locks up my iMac and I have to hold down the power button to reset it.
I have been told by several people that the problem is from the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS drivers. I tried to up date the graphics drivers from Apple's and Nvidia's website with the latest driver. When I try to install the graphics driver from the setup file, it gives me the following error.
"The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."
Here is the location where I downloaded the driver from.

    Hey guys,
I encountered problems renaming the nv4 disp file that allen sent me (drivers still would not install)...so instead of replacing the original nv4 disp.inf file in windows, I opened the nv4 disp file allen sent me, copied the text, and pasted it in the original nv4 disp file in the NVIDIA folder after deleting the text of the original file and saved it...after that, the new drivers installed without a hitch...have yet to test whether or not the infinite loop is gone or not in Age of Empires 3 though...will keep u updated...thx for the file allen!

  • Are the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 shipping,  at all?

has ANYONE actually gotten a new 3.2 with an 8800 in it delivered to them?
I'm wondering if there is a major problem, or its just in short supply
    i ordered a:
    Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeo
    2GB (2x1GB)
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
    500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb
    Two 16x SuperDrives
    AirPort Extreme Card (Wi-Fi)
I ordered it on Jan 8th...

We have some interesting numbers to share while we're waiting for our 8800 GT kit to arrive for our 3.2GHz. With the help of a second party who just received his 8800 GT equipped Mac Pro we have this:
3DMark06 overall rating with default settings and default tests:
    Radeon HD 2600 XT under Vista 64 = 4894
GeForce 8800 GT under Windows XP = 13404
    GeForce 8800 GTX under Vista 64 = 14242
I think the 8800 GT will be worth the wait.

Hello and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards!
Well, the honest answer is that it will work but I think that quite a few 'features' might not be convenient/functional to use if you travel with the laptop.
There is nothing that stops Server from being installed on it. If it is just that this is your 'desktop' machine and normally does not leave the network it is currently attached to, it would be more than adequate. In other words, 'Tinkering' will be fine for this setup, but any type of 'serious' serving might overwhelm the HD (it is 'smaller', lower rotational speed, possible long term effects of 24 hour uptime use et al) but everything else will work as intended.
