Problems with AIM on new iMac G5

Hi--Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I'm having an extremely frustrating problem with AIM, which I recently downloaded on my son's new iMac G5 (TIger 10.4.3). I've tried posting this question in the iChat forum, but since he doesn't use iChat and never has it open on his computer, I don't think it's an interference problem with iChat.
AIM quits unexpectedly and repeatedly, often several times in just a few minutes. I've tried: throwing out all preferences, trashing and reinstalling AIM, and using AIM from a different user account on the machine. AIM worked FINE on my computer--an older G4 also running OS Tiger, so I can't imagine that this is an operating system conflict.
A friend suggested that it might be a problem with the wireless network. The new G5 is connected wirelessly via Airport to my G4. Has anyone heard of AIM not running well on a wireless machine? Could something (an outside frequency perhaps?) be interfering with the wireless connection, causing AIM to quit?
Needless to say, AOL's tech support is completely unhelpful. Says they don't provide tech support for AIM.
If anyone can help, or knows someplace I can find AIM tech support, I would GREATLY appreciate it! THanks!

The best advice I can offer is to dump the AOL AIM client altogether, and use a third-party instant messaging application that supports AIM.
For example, Adium X is a full featured IM client that supports AIM as well as many other IM protocols.
It's very stable on Tiger, and it's light years ahead of the official AIM client from AOL.
Try it out!

  • Upstart problem with my brand new Imac 27" I5

I have just bought a brand new Imac 27" I5, and have had an 24" before, and i am so happy about the ned 27" I5 late 10.
When i start up the new Imac i get the apple icon with the white upstart window, and the next window is blue, and than i doesn't get any further. The harddisk stop spinning, and the cooler stops, but there is just a blue screen, and the only thing to do is a hardware reset by the start up buttom.
It starts up again, and the 3 or 4 time a can start up, and all the things works. But sometimes, when the computer goes to sleep mode, the screen fills with all kinds of colours.
I am very unhappy about it, and hope someone can help me.
I have tried to re install the osx, but it have not helped med
    Kindly regards
    MTP

Call AppleCare or return it to the store for repair.

  • Problems with ram on new imac... system failure???

just bought a new 24 imac... since the less expensive way to get more ram is known, i bought it separatley (1 gb), after i used it, it worked for a month with no problems at all... but about 3 days ago it started shutting down and would not work. I took the computer down to the apple centre but all they did was scream at me for putting in the ram... they cant seem to solve the problem, they are sure it is the ram... im not...
    any ideas??? pls im desperate

Well, if it's a RAM problem, there are three possibilities:
    1) The new RAM is bad. In that case, they would remove it, tell you that's the problem, and give your computer back.
    2) The RAM that came with the computer is bad. In that case, they would remove it, replace it, and give you your computer back.
    3) Both RAM sticks were bad (this is unlikely). In that case, they'd remove the new, replace the original, and give your computer back.
If it's in service, they would/should run a hardware check on it, which would show whether the memory stick are bad. That would/should be their first step.
Since they say that the computer is not working again, chances are that the problem is not because of the RAM. You are also within your rights to ask what they initially did to diagnose the problem. If "run a hardware test" isn't part of what they tell you, they didn't do a very thorough job.
This could be caused any number of things -- from the actual RAM slots being bad to a faulty power supply and a lot of things in between.

  • New to apple, not a techie. importing problems with canon hv20 - new imac

    hi team
i'm just starting out, and have honestly tried to look through the boards, but its just to much stuff to read.
i'm trying to import minidv tapes from canon, newer tape recorded on the canon imports ok on manual.
older tape recorded on an older canon around 2004-6, which plays in my new canon ok, apart from its not wide screen in the lcd, wont import.
what's the difference between my new wide screen tape, and my older recorded tape?
my imac is great, but the tutorials to get started with are smooth and basic, and assume you have no porblems.
    thanks in advance

thank you for your time team.
why isn't imovie clever enough to receive my older tape which i guess isn't digital? its hardly ancient technology or tape. if my hv20 plays it, why doesn't imovie just receive it?
to me its all just movie footage, i'm confused as to why it doesn't give me options or ask me question's about what i'm uploading...
does imovie only work with digital footage?
    cheers

Pages 08 fonts- problems with Arial, Times New Roman - how do I repair them?
    Using 10.6.8 on MacBook Pro

I am running Snow Leopard. Transferring the same texts to TextEdit has no problems, so this is a Pages problem, I think.  Corruption of Times New Roman and Arial fonts, I suspect, but where? and what do I do about it? I just need to be pointed to a source of advice, I think.
    Thanks

my host name changes every few days, since Xmas adding a macbook its changed 6 times. Do I need to stop this? Does it cause problems with sharing between the iMac and macbook?

There are several possible causes for this problem.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local".
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is due to a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
    6. See also this support article.
Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.

  • Is there a fix yet for the no sound problem with lion on the iMac without having to restart every time I switch the computer on?

Is there a fix yet for the no sound problem with lion on the iMac without having to restart every time I switch the computer on?

Try booting in Safe Mode by holding the the shift key immediately after powering on your system. Safe boot mode will for a directory check of your startup volume, then load only the required kernal extensions (kext files), and deletes some cache files. Once the system boots into Safe Mode you can simply restart the system to see whether the issue has been resolved.
If you still have the issue try resetting the SMC by shutting down the system and disconnecting the power cord for ~15 seconds, then reconnecting the power cord. Next, reset the parameter RAM (PRAM) by holding down the option-option-P-R keys after powering ON the system. Wait until the iMac restarts twice, then let the system boot normally.

    Hai Matt
I have a problem with download a new app. While I bought iphone5, I take iphone to shopkeeper for download some app and videos that he used his Apple ID . That's t problem now.. Not all the time his ID is appearing but some times his Apple ID is appearing that time I can't download app, videos, songs.. So please guide me to remove that ID or how to solve that..
    Regards
    Babu

Check Settings/iTunes and AppStore/AppleID and make sure that your AppleID is filled in. If not , sign out and sign in with the correct info.
To make sure that no other apps or videos are on your device than the one you bought, set it up as new device, explained here: How to back up your data and set up as a new device
Content that is not bought with your ID can't be used on your phone, that's why his ID and password is asked when you try to use those apps downloaded in the store.

It may not have been considered a "Major Release," But when the it's the only OS that the machines you are currently building will run, it's pretty freakin' major!
(I'm not sure if Apple's latest machines will still run 10.5, or not, but from following this thread, I'm guessing not?)
It is the standard at Apple... the latest build of the current OS is what goes on the new machines, and the Motherboards, Chipsets, & BIOS (not the right term for it with Mac, I know) are "hard written" to accept that OS as the absolute minimum, and nothing older (or lower as some call it).
So, since the latest machines are coming preloaded with Snow Leopard (10.6.2) that, and subsequent newer builds of OS 10.6 and up is all they can be loaded with.
This is nothing new. It's industry wide in both Mac and PC. Just try to put XP on a brand new Dell, HP, or Gateway PC. Without flashing the BIOS and taking a "more likely than not" chance of rendering most of your hardware undetectable, it just ain't gonna happen.
Conversely, just as Snow Leopard won't run on a PPC powered Mac, Vista and 7 may install, or appear to, on a single core, older PC, but the first time you install and try to open anything other than the OS itself, you're in for a world of problems.
People have tried to fight this for years. In 2005 Mac users went out of their minds when Apple dropped support for OS 9. A year later, it was Windows 98 users freaking out over their beloved OS being "sunsetted". I was skeptical of the move to Intel processors when I first heard about it, having become a full time Mac user, and being partial to AMD before that. But like Motorola PPC processors, AMDs run hot and heat is the enemy. The new machines run faster, cooler, and do more for less money.
It's a major pain for people who don't have the budget for a new Mac (or PC) and still have old software that is perfectly functional, but they are finding more and more incompatibility as they interact with other people and newer systems. Sooner or later though, technology wins and everyone has to either upgrade or drop out.  Fighting it is futile.  I will always remember the day last Summer when I stopped at a traffic light and next to me was an older, redneck looking fellow in a new brand spanking new Honda Accord. It may have even been a hybrid, I don't know, but duct taped on his dash was what had to be a thirty-five year-old 8-track player with a bunch of wires coming out of the back, also taped to the dash, and running to a pair of 6 x 9 speakers, which were just laying on the dash (no duct tape). I had to wonder why he bothered to buy the latest in automotive technology and yet he was stuck in a time warp for his stereo. Don't Hondas come with some pretty decent CD stereo units? And where can you find 8 track tapes anymore?

  • Odd collection of problems with newly purchased used iMac

I have recently purchased a used iMac from eBay (an Intel model from 2006). I've been trying to get it set up over the last couple of days and have had one problem after another. I suspect a hardware problem, but would like to be able to pin it down before I contact the seller and ask them to take (and pay for shipping on) a return.
    Here are the symptoms:
The iMac came with OS 10.5 freshly installed. I ran Software Update, which offered to install a combo update to bring it up to 10.5.8. I said yes, and it downloaded the update, restarted to complete the installation, and then hung at the same point for hours during the installation. I finally gave up and shutdown by holding down the power button, then restarted and tried again to run the update through Software Update -- and it hung again. I did a new fresh install of 10.5, and thereafter was able to download and install the update properly.
Afterward, I used the computer for a while without a problem and installed a few applications that I have known to be compatible with both Leopard and Intel Macs in the past. After it finished with the installing, I opened a Safari window and the computer became unresponsive, except that I could move the spinning beach ball around the screen. I left it for ten or fifteen minutes, then tried to force quit, but the force quit dialog box wouldn't come up. I held down the power button to shut down, waited ten seconds, and restarted.
Suspecting bad memory, I installed Applejack and Memtest and used Applejack to run Memtest in single user mode. It found no problems with the memory. (The computer did not come with a disk to check the hardware.)
I restarted, tried to open Safari and found that the cursor was "stuck." I went to check the USB connection for the mouse, when I heard the startup chime and then watched as the iMac rebooted on its own. A screen notice said:

The report also showed an unusual screen artifact -- a black line that went across it, but was not on the rest of the screen.
I opened Safari to look up information about kernel panics, and found a similar black line across its window. Later, on a different page, there was a blue line -- and on another page after that, various blue and black lines appeared. I restarted Safari, and it still showed odd lines. Those lines were only on the Safari window, not across the whole screen.
I have very little experience troubleshooting problems of this sort, and I'm hoping someone with more experience can tell me what significance the panic report has and how it might relate to the other problems. Like I said, I expect that I'll need to return this iMac (which I've only had for a couple of days now), but I'd like to have a clearer idea of what's going on before I contact the seller.
Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Multiple Issues with iTunes on New iMac

    Hello Apple Community,
I recently bought a 27" iMac with 3.1Ghz i5 processor running on Snow Leopard and finally set it up.  I have owned many Macs in the past and currently have been using a 5 year old 15" MacBook Pro on Snow Leopard that has been running flawlessly but I needed something with a bit more processing power.  When I first took my iMac out of the box I went ahead and used the Migration Assistant to move my applications and files over from my MacBook Pro but after multiple attempts I had to stop and simply move the music, document, and photo data on to a portable hard drive while I got the Migration Assistant to move the applications.  I simply moved the old iTunes music folder over to my new iMac and replaced the iTunes folder on my iMac.  The new iMac has already been authorized through my iTunes account and the music will play.  Now here are my current issues.
When I play a song on iTunes, there appears to be a random amount of fade-in and/or crossfade when I switch playing songs.  I have checked the playback preferences and crossfade is not checked.  Some songs the crossfade will take a second while sometimes it will be as much as 10 seconds of crossfade.  On my MacBook with the identical library and settings, it does not have these issues.
The other issue I have been experiencing is if iTunes has been open and my computer sits for a little while (usually after awaking from sleep or even listening to a few songs without touching the keyboard, the songs will stop playing on their own and when I press the play button, it begins to "play" the track but there is no sound coming from iTunes.  I have checked the volume slider in iTunes and it is still at max volume while all other applications still work and output sound.  iTunes will only work properly if I close it and re-open it.
The final issue is similar to the last one in that when I try and play previews in the iTunes Music store it will not play but when I hit the play button iTunes will then appear to be "playing" but no sound from either the store or any of my songs from the Library.
iTunes works perfectly fine on my MacBook Pro and it does have any of these issues.  Both Macs are currently running iTunes 10.4.1.  All songs in each library are checked and will play to a degree.
I have deleted iTunes and all corresponding library files, (basically anything with iTunes in the name) and tried to reinstall iTunes and used multiple methods to replace the music files including using Home Sharing, a portable Hard Drive, and dragging and dropping the music files from the shared folder and no matter what I try, I still cannot get iTunes on my iMac to work properly.  I have been searching around the support forums for others who might have had this issue but I cannot seem to find much.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had not tried that before, but from your suggestion, I went ahead and did it and it seems to have gotten rid of the crossfade issues I was experiencing but whenever I try and listen to a preview in the iTunes music store it still does not appear to be working.  Also, I was testing a number of tracks and it seems like there are a few tracks in particular that will make iTunes stop playing when I click on them and then if I attempt to play something else, iTunes says it is playing but no sound is coming from it.
What I have found that is interesting is the first time I ran the Disk Utility it repaired a HUGE number of misc. files.  After running it and still experiencing problems I tried to run it again but this time the files were not as numerous and were all within the /Library/CoreServices menu.  Each subsequent time I ran the Disk Utility and rebooted, I tried to run the Disk Utility again and the same files seem to still be having the same issues.  This is just an example of one of the files I have been having an issue with.
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu/Contents/Resources/zh_TW.lproj/RemoteDesktopMenu.nib" , should be drwxr-xr-x , they are -rwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired "System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu/Contents/Resources/zh_TW.lproj/RemoteDesktopMenu.nib" .
One in particular gave me a Warning and said it could not be repaired.  I'm not sure if it is important to repair but I still seem to be having some issues here and there.  Here is the message from the Disk Utility regarding the file in question.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

  • Problems with  Bootcamp and an iMac 27".

Hi, I recently installed a full copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, purchased at Office Depot, on my fully upgraded iMac 27" (Core i5, 4GB, Radeon 4850). My intent was to use Snow Leopard as my platform of choice for work and special projects, while booting into Windows for gaming (PC gamer).
I had an Applecare representative on the phone as I installed the operating system and the process appeared to resolve quite successfully.
I used the Apple Bootcamp Utility to establish a partition size of 300 GB, and then I placed the Windows 7 32 bit full installation DVD into the drive and proceeded with the installation. I ensured that the Bootcamp partition formatted thoroughly (NTFS) and I set Windows to download all the necessary updates automatically via Windows Update.
I ensured that the upgraded GPU drivers were included during the installation (to avoid the black screen issue), as well as installing the Snow Leopard disk drivers, the iMac 27"-specific drivers and new Bootcamp 3.1 update for Windows. The partition worked fine and appeared to have been configured successfully after approximately 2 days of booting.
Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and Sophos Enterprise AV. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly. Sometimes, when I would boot, I would simply reach a black screen with a white, flashing cursor. Other occasions I would load to a black screen, which contained a disk read error (Disk can not be found) and a request to CTRLALTDEL. Yet other times, the computer would simply lock up on the gray, Option bootdisk selection screen. In each of the aforementioned circumstances, the computer would seem permanently stuck, since the computer would not proceed to any operating system, regardless of time allotted (up to 20 minutes provided). On occasion, Windows would boot normally with no problems whatsoever.
During each of the inexplicable lock ups, I would initiate a hard reboot, and boot off of the Windows 7 HP 32 bit DVD. Often, the DVD would perform a boot check of the operating system. On each of the occasions, the operating system check would list no errors. Because I was using the Apple Wireless Keyboard, I assumed that perhaps the issue remained with an inability to strike CTRLALTDEL and quickly purchased a USB keyboard. While I no longer receive the "Can not find disk" errors that request CTRLALTDEL, I still rarely get the black screen with the flashing cursor and I routinely receive the gray, OS option screen.
I believed that perhaps booting with an external drive or jump drive attached might be causing the problem but upon removing all of said drives, the boot malfunctions persist. I used the Snow Leopard Disk Utilities to scan the hard drive and it detected no problems. I also utilized Windows hard drive utility to check for bad sectors. After 2 hours of scanning, no bad sectors or hard drive problems were detected. I finally rebooted the system in ChkDsk and upon 1 hour of scanning, ChkDsk confirmed no problems, bad sectors or issues with the hard drive. Because all three utilities appear to be unanimous, operating from two distinct operating systems, I'm inclined to believe the consensus and dismiss the possibility of a defective hard drive.
While I can always eventually reboot into Windows, I am concerned that the large number of "hard reboots" - reboots done using the power button, which account for 5-6 on bad days, will eventually lead to a diminished lifespan for my iMac's motherboard or power supply. I want to curtail these pointless restarts. Booting with the Windows 7 DVD in the hard drive, yields a clean boot into Windows, however, this is very inconvenient and, moreso, would lead to wear and tear on the DVD that I would rather avoid (as well as not resolving the problems inherent in my Windows boot partition). After running the Windows 7 boot utility, over a dozen times, and receiving no errors at all, I'm at a loss for what the problem can be.
My biggest problem, currently, is to avoid the wave of hard reboots. This most naturally occurs due to the computer locking up on the gray OS option screen. I'll select Windows and the hard drive will not spin up. I was advised to check my boot ini or use utitilities that provided a hard-mapped boot table for the Windows partition but I'm wary of corrupting or damaging my Windows installation.
Has anyone experienced these problems with their Macs, 27" or otherwise? And can anyone help me resolve this problem before substantial wear and tear through constant rebooting results? Thank you for any input and thank you for your time.

Well, you're not alone. Many other users are having the same problem, and it appears that Apple is ignoring the problem. I bought my iMac 27" in June 2010 and installed Bootcamp 3.1 running Windows 7. About every other reboot the gray screen will freeze during bootup and I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes I get the Disk Read Failure. It is very, very frustrating. The only reason I bought the iMac 27" is that I like the look of it and the big screen; I have no desire to switch to a Mac, as I have too much money invested in Windows development software. I've installed multiple dual-boot systems in other non-Mac systems and never had any problems. I hope Apple stops ignoring the problem and comes out with a fix real soon.
