Problems with an Airport roaming network

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station, 4th Gen and I am trying to extend its wireless network by connecting an Airport Express (802.11n) via Ethernet to the AEBS.  I have followed the directions here very carefully:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
Everything seems to work correctly, in other words, I get a green light on the AX, Airport Utility says that it has an IP address out of the correct DHCP network being allocated by the AEBS, but when I try to connect to the AX, my MacBook Pro gets a self assigned IP (169.xxx.xxx.xxx).  It seems that I cannot get to the AEBS DHCP server to get an IP assigned to my MBP.  The signal strength indicator in the menu bar has an exclamation point in it.  When I unplug the network cable from the AX, and plug my MBP in, I get an IP address.  If I unplug the AX from power, my MBP connects to the AEBS just fine and gets an IP.  I have tried three different AX's - two 802.11g's and one 802.11n.
Has anyone experienced this and found a solution?
Thanks,
Greg

OK, thanks. I'm not familiar with your type of service at all, so not sure that I can help.
I cannot add anything more to what you have probably already done. Apple's settings are correct in the support document, but run through the settings below.
It is critically important that you perform a complete power cycle after you have configured the AirPort Expess and Updated the settings.
I assume that the AirPort Extreme is working correctly when the AirPort Express (AX) is not powered up.
Let's check your settings on the AirPort Express using Airport Utility Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons. Settings should look like this:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network  (Not Extend)
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the AirPort Extreme network
No check mark is needed next Allow this network to be extended
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible) a good choice
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
Wireless Passwrod = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update and the Express should have a green light in about 40-45 seconds
Very Important......Power Cycle the entire network
Power off every device on your network....power down order is not important
Wait a minute or two
Start the modem and let it run by itself or a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme the same way
Start the AirPort Express the same way
Continue starting devices one at time the same way until the network is back up

I have an Airport Extreme network with two Airport Express base stations. The Airport Extreme is connected to the internet via ethernet/cable modem. The imac and the base stations work fine and I have no problem with my internet access on the imac, but I can't get internet access via the emac. • Problems with Bonjour, Airport Extreme and OS 10.4.3

I have a networked, HP Photosmart 8450 printer. The printer was connected to both an iMac 20" and PowerBook G4 15" running OS 10.4.3. Yesterday, I lost the ability to print from the PowerBook. I have identified it as a problem with my Airport Extreme connection.
The iMac can see the printer just fine, and it shows up using Bonjour when I browse printers in the Printer Setup Utility. The PowerBook, however, cannot see the printer - that is, it does not show up in the browser, but only when I use the Airport connection. However, when I connect the printer to the PowerBook via USB, or when I plug a network cable in to the PowerBook, it sees the printer immediately using Bonjour.
It appears, then, the problem is with my Airport Extreme card. Has this issue been identified by anyone else/Apple? Perusing the discussion boards, it seems others have had this problem.
    PowerBook G4/iMac Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Thanks for the response, however, my question remains: I'm wondering if anyone else with an Airport Extreme ("b" version) and OS 10.4.9 installed has a problem using Admin Utility 4.1.1 and/or Airport Setup Assistant 4.1.1? Specifically, the problem is, after resetting the Airport Extreme, I was able to set it up using the Setup Assistant (establish the network, set the password), but thereafter, it does not show up in the Admin Utility at all (but the Extreme's lights flash as it is being accessed) and in Setup Assistant, it shows up, but there are "errors" when trying to change settings. It is very odd.
When I was running 10.3.9, I had had no problems setting up/administering my Airport Extreme. Suspecting the Extreme itself, I even had an Apple Genius inspect it at the Apple store, but it was pronounced in working order. I might try to check the Airport card inside the G4 (by trying it in a friend's G4). If this communication problem is not shared by anyone else (ii.e., a software issue), it could be my Airport card.

  • IPhone has constant problems with Computer-To-Computer network

I use a Computer-To-Computer network to connect my iPhone with my MacBook Pro when I'm at the office. This enables syncing of Things and OmniFocus between my iPhone versions of these programs and the versions on my MacBook Pro. I have one of the original (2G) iPhones. I daily go to my Airport icon on my Mac's menu bar, click on Create Network, and set up a password. I'm using 40-bit WEP.
This sort of syncing procedure worked fairly well until iPhone OS 3.0. Ever since then, it's been completely unreliable. I've tried changing the channel a number of times, and of course rebooting both the iPhone and the computer dozens of times. It's still a problem.
Anyone heard of this networking problem with 3.0? Any info appreciated! Thanks.

yes, i have been having problems with computer to computer networking to iphone as well. for now, the only thing that keeps a steady connection is removing the sim card, so keep a paper clip handy.

  • Problem with my Airport Extreme Base Station (old model)

I have two computers connecting to the internet with an old AEBS via ethernet. One is a Powerbook G4 and the other is a MacBook Pro. Since performing a software update this morning, the older machine stopped being able to connect to the base station wirelessly (the MacBook is fine though). The error message I receive is "There was an error joining Airport network". I am able to connect to other unsecured networks in the area so I don't think there is a problem with my Airport card.
I connected my Powerbook directly to the base station with an ethernet cable. While doing so I was able to access the internet and Airport Setup Utility but once unplugged I was still not able to connect wirelessly.
I have tried restarting the base station both via the utility and by unplugging it. I have also restarted my Powerbook multiple times.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, should have asked exactly how old your PowerBook is. Apparently the faster AirPort Extreme card didn't hit the market until early 2003. Find your PowerBook "Specifications" by clicking on that link above in the Apple website menu bar. Picking at random from the list, the 1GHz model released Nov 2002 didn't have an AirPort Extreme card, but only the AirPort card, which means the slower speed 802.11b wireless. The two PB models released in Jan 2003 both were AirPort Extreme models.
You'll be able to use the PB, just open AirPort Admin Utility and change your network "Mode:" selector (at the bottom of the panel) to "802.11b/g Compatible" from 802.11g Only.

    What can i do?

Does the game has the same iOS requirements that your phone has? Games needing iOS7 will not install on iOS6 and earlier.
Did you try to download it to your computer and sync it to your phone after that?
If you can't connect to the iTunes Store, try these suggestions:

  • When trying to install a wireless printer, the WEP password says its incorrect. Is this a problem with the airport, my Internet provider or HP? I know the password is correct.

    Your AirPort Extreme supports WPA.
WEP is outdated and considered fairly useless, so use WPA.
Be sure you are using AirPort Utility  5.6. If you are not running Lion then use AirPort Utility 5.5.3.
AirPort Utility 6.0 cannot administer 802.11b/g base stations.

  • There is a problem with your airport time capsule disk

    Hello,
Since I got my airport time capsule and set it up, I got an error "there is a problem with your airport time capsule disk" and disk is not listed for setup or erase. The LED is flashing amber sine I turned on the first time.
The wifi is working fine as well as the internet connectivity.
I got the device from the online store and was shipped to my address in the states but I opened the box the first time in Saudi Arabia as I left the states immediately after receiving it.
Any advise on fixing this or a near by apple support center where I can get it in for repair / replacement?

I would first suggest that you perform a "factory default" reset on your Time Capsule (TC).
If that fails to remedy the problem, you can obtain technical support from Apple here.

Unless your HP printer is an AirPrint-ready device, just connecting it to the USB port of the AirPort Express base station will not make it so.
On the other hand, connecting a non-AirPrint printer to the base station's USB port it can be shared out by the base station's print server. Please see the following Apple Support article for details.

  • Wireless Networks Problems with Xbox - Airport express

    Hi Hope someone can help
    Wireless setup & Hardware
I have a PC running XP and the wireless Router is connected directly with RJ45 cable into the Netgear DG834GT
I have a iMac G5 which has no problems getting onto the wireless network
I have a Airport Express unit where all my music is streamed into another room and that works fine, but my problem is I cannot get the xbox I have just purchased to work ie (xbox Live etc) which is attached with RJ45 cable direct to Airport Express.
I have installed lastest firmware for all devices, ie Airport Express, DG834GT
My Wireless Security settings have been set to WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi protected access pre shared key) I must admit I tried to set WEP security at first but had no Luck, so I don't know if I've done right thing
When I look at attached devices on router software it shows me correctly that there are 3 computers on network I can view IP address and MAC address
My Question is should the Xbox work ok with my setup?
Should the Xbox not get all network infomation automatic
Do I need to manual set the xbox with Network settings?
Or am I missing something, any help would be Great

    Hello,
I don't know if this link will help but, give it a shot. I have the same setup as you but, I have a PS2 instead. I believe you have to manually adjust some settings on the XBox.

  • Airport - Roaming Network

    Hi everyone,
I've set up a roaming network using a brand new Airport Extreme as my main wireless network and then a 2nd Generation Airport Express to extend this network via Ethernet.
I created the network by first creating my main network on my Airport Extreme and then factory resetting my Airport Express and switching it on and then letting Airport Utility detect and decide to 'EXTEND my network via Ethernet'.. Airport Utility configured this all automatically...
My Airport Extreme is upstairs and my Airport Express is Downstairs.
My Network Printer is also Upstairs.
Now as far as devices go they comfortably switch from upstairs to downstairs no problem, so the roaming network is working as it should.. .. But when I bring a device (iPad or iPhone) downstairs and try to print to the network printer, the printer can't be found on the network. As soon as I bring the device upstairs to print it finds the printer..
Now I'm not yet 100% sure if the device itself is problematic or if it's actually the network because in one instance, one device actually did find the printer but maybe this is because it was still connected to the upstairs network.
Anyway.. What I want to know is, how does a network printer tie in to or be 'related' a roaming network? Is it just the fact that the roaming network has the same SSID, Password and Security type and bridge mode? Is there anything else that my device (iPhone) is looking for when looking for a network printer?
As I try to troubleshoot I noticed that Airport Express which is the extension in Airport Utility in the NETWORK MODE tab, it has 'Create a Wireless Network' as the type.. Shouldn't this be 'Extend a wireless network'?
    -Frankie

As I try to troubleshoot I noticed that Airport Express which is the extension in Airport Utility in the NETWORK MODE tab, it has 'Create a Wireless Network' as the type.. Shouldn't this be 'Extend a wireless network'?
No, it is correctly setup as create a wireless network.. but it might well work better in extend.. slower but better.. it might be worth a try if this is an issue for you.
Disconnect the ethernet connection and then try using the setup by extend wireless.
    Why is this failing??
It is hard to answer but I think apple is falling down in keeping their networking quality up to date. The simple fact is.. they are overreaching trying to do too much hairy stuff with peer to peer video transfers.. for example.. and forgetting the basics.
Fundamental local DNS and routing is not working as well as it should.
The idevices have always had roaming issues.. whereas the OS X products have handled it well.. this suggests that the problem may not be the airport but rather the iOS ability to locate network resources.
There is very little however I can suggest to fix it.. since airprint is unique apple protocol.. to get around the problem you would need to use specific iOS apps that supply printing outside of apple method.. there is a number of these and it may be worth seeing if your particular printer has some method of printing apart from airprint.

  • Problem with Skype and Wireless Networks

I have been having a problem with Airport for about 10 months. Long winded explanation follows.
Initially file transfers over wireless networks were extremely slow but this seems to have been that 10.5.2 update problem. There is a remaining issue when I use Skype on my Mac (details below) connected to a wireless network the incoming and outgoing audio drop out for 1 - 3 seconds at irregular but frequent intervals (approx every 5 - 10 seconds). This is regardless of the wireless network I am on - and that is dozens of them all over the world. Note it is voice only calls, not video. Apple has replaced the Airport card and the mother board; the OS has been reinstalled; test accounts set up but nothing fixes the problem.
At one point I had temporary relief by switching off 'Configure IPv6' in System Preferences/Network/Airport/TCP/IP. This worked for a month or so but now the problem is back as before.
All other aspects of wireless activity are fine. Wireless firmware is 1.4.4.
I have worn out my welcome with the usually sensational help desk. Any suggestions out there in Mac Land?

    Hi there
Been a hectic week here getting this problem resolved. It is all OK now. Here is what we found and how it was done.

    and so on.
After discussion with tech support they said the Airpot card had to be replaced. This was done with admirable expediency and I got the MBP back in 36 hours. On testing it the same problem was still there. Identical pattern on the ping test, the fault was not the hardware.
Once more a call to Apple and another tech. This time we booted from the OS 10.5 install disk and ran the ping test. I ran it for a few hours without seeing the fault, it worked fine. The problem had to be in the operating system.
After backing up all the data I zeroed the drive and did a clean install of the OS. Bingo! Problem gone.
So after 10 months, two airport cards and a mother board, the issue was in fact something corrupt deep in the OS.
So to anyone having similar problems with Airport, run a ping test as described above. If you see that kind of pattern, try a clean install before going down the hardware road.

  • Airport Roaming Network and Internet Sharing

Dear Esteemed Experts (Tesserax et. al):
Thanks to you, I have successfully set up TC and 2 Airport Express N in a roaming network (plugged to Ethernet but using the same name and protocol) using 802.11n (b/g compatible) radio mode. It's working well, except a few blind spots to cover.
If I want to add an old b/g-only Airport Express or Netgear Access Point (WG602) to this roaming network (plugging them into Ethernet outlet), will this slow down the N network?
Also, can I turn on Internet Sharing on my iMac (with N capability) and make it to join the Roaming Netowrk? If so, can I manage it through Airport Utility?
    Thanks
    Aghoo

If I want to add an old b/g-only Airport Express or Netgear Access Point (WG602) to this roaming network (plugging them into Ethernet outlet), will this slow down the N network?
If it is connected via Ethernet it will have no direct affect on the performance of the 802.11n network.
lso, can I turn on Internet Sharing on my iMac (with N capability) and make it to join the Roaming Netowrk?
Internet sharing has nothing to do with joining a wireless network. If you want your iMac to join the wireless network, just go to the AirPort menu and select the network that you want to join.
If so, can I manage it through Airport Utility?
AirPort Utility is only for managing Apple's base stations.

  • Problem with Time Capsule WIFI Network

Here's what happened to me suddenly at 15.
I have 1 TB Time Capsule connected to DLINK adsl modem. Time Capsule is connected by Ethernet to a PC, by wireless an iMac, MacBook, PC Notebook, 2iPhones, 1 iPad. Password-protected network.
Start the iPhone to tell me that the password for network access is not right. Therewrite, same problem. It does not connect anymore. Then I try with iPad. Even theycan not surf, it asks me the password, says "Unable to access the network xxx".
I go to the PC and I have no problem connecting. I turn on the notebook, same problem, does not accept passoword and can not connect. Restart the iMac and thenworked up and surprise me asking for the password of the wireless network, I enterthe correct password, and does not connect.
Recovery Time Capsule, change the network name etc etc. ...
    same Problem
Am referring again, do I reset everything, I create new network ..
With PC and iphone does not change anything, not even with iPad, beginning with the iMac is connected, but the connection is very slow ... and then stops.
When I connected the iMac via Ethernet and even navigate without any problems.
So I think that something is broken or damaged at the wireless Time Capsule.Yesterday I updated Airport Utility ... maybe you can 'hit something?
I also googled and I read that many TC died after 18 months. I have bought for Christmas 2010 ... and have now gone 18 months!

Maybe now it's ok. The problem was caused by the utility airport update on my Pc with Windows 7. I installed 5.5.2 version again, and now no problem with all devices.
Anyone can explain me if is it possible?
