Problems with Aperture Library

My iMac crashed as I was importing some pictures. When I restarted it said there was a problem with the library and it needed to be repaired. After the repair I find that when I open Aperture I get an error message:There was an error opening the database for the library “/Users/samswallow/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”. I quit that and Aperture closes.  I have reinstalled Aperture and it makes no difference. All my photos are still there in Aperture Library Masters and can be seen in Preview. I would value any help on this.

Did you do a repair or a rebuild?  And did the action complete normally?
I would do the permissions repair then the library repair again and if you still get the errors do the rebuild. Note before doing the rebuild you should have a backup of your library. While it rarely happens rebuilds can make things worst.

  • I see this problem with Aperture Library

Well, as you know, we have an Aperture Library. In my case about 60GBs and it will be growing about 35GBs per year. This Library is made of files imported from folders in another external HD (they are the originals imported from the camera). I have a Vault and consequently another file with 60GB. Then I have photos that really are triplicated.
I would love that Aperture import my files and not duplicate them. As iView works.
Please, let me know if there´s another way of doing these things.
    Regards.
    Guillermo

If you are importing your photos into the Aperture library -- making them Managed, rather than Referenced -- then you can delete the folders you imported them from.
(If you move back and forth between Managed and Referenced, you have a number of choices of moving vs copying, duplicating or not duplicating.)
It always feels strange to delete a lot of images. Many people seem to solve this by archiving the images on DVD. Then you can keep just the images in the Aperture library, and the vault (on separate hard disks), and feel relatively safe. I find I also keep one spare, more-or-less up-to-date copy of the whole library on yet another disk, from a well-founded superstition about hard drives.

  • Some problems with aperture 3

I have some problems with aperture 3...
    //1
I updated my library with aperture 3, and export some projects for make another one, everything works fine, I can switch the library very quickly...but when I want change my background in snow leopard, the first library ( current default ) don´t show anything, seems like don´t load well, the "aperture" shows right but without arrow for open the hierarchy, and if I switch the library ( the second one ) the background can load this library without problems, works with all folders, projects...
I repaired the permissions, database and rebuild database but nothing happens.
    //2
The second problem I think is the same. In Mail, iWork, iLife...the Media Browser don´t load my main library, only the second one, I have the last update installed, and the second library works fine, why not the first?
    //3
I imported some projects from the one library to the other, for adjust my pipeline and make much easy my workflow, but if I import, for example, 2 folders with 4 projects, aperture import in my library 4 folders and 8 projects, the imported files are duplicated O_O
I see the same stuff inside the folders, and when I delete one of them, the aperture delete the 2 "versions", but in the trash I see only one of them xD and if I put back the folder/project, again I see 2 versions xD
I "fixed" creating new folders/projects and moving the photos manually...( with some crush in the process ) any idea about this problem?

This problem is more as a enhancement...what happen if I want to sync different projects from my 2 libraries in my iPhone?? because iTunes only show me the last loaded library

  • Problem with Aperture 3.6 Can't open Preferences

I had a problem with Aperture 3.6; opened a new Library from the Vault, now cannot open Aperture Preferences. When I attempt to open preferences I get a very thin vertical line about 1 ½ inches long?? Any fixes for this/  Thanks, Vic

Try to delete the Aperture preferences as described here at this link:
Get help with Aperture 3 - Apple Support
    Steps to reset preference settings
To reset your Aperture user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
    Quit Aperture.
In the Finder choose "Go to folder" from the Go menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field. Press the Go button.
Remove the "com.apple.Aperture.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Restart your computer if you're using OS X Mavericks.
The locations of your Aperture libraries are stored in the preference file listed above. If you have stored your library outside the default location of  ~/Pictures/Aperture Library, make a note of where the library is before deleting the Aperture preferences file. If you have more than one library, you can bring up a dialog to choose which one to load by pressing Option immediately after you open Aperture.

  • Problems with itunes library and order of tracks

    Hello,
I downloaded the new update, and I'm having a problem with my library when accessed from the browser. Before itunes 7, my tracks were in order that they appeared on the album, now they are in alphabetical order. Is there a way to make it go back the way it was before the update--in order by track number?
    thanks.
    chris

I was having the same problem and I knew there had to be an easy answer. I knew it for sure when I saw your topic unanswered. Just right click, or control click on the bar where it says name, album, genre, etc. and select "track number," this will give you the option to put them in their original order.
You can also access this under "view options" in the view pull down menu.

  • How to use iMovie with Aperture Library from an external drive?

    Hey,
    Some problems:
    1. My first video, I stored the project on my own laptop and used the library from the HD. This seems to give some problems, but I now figured out I have to consolidate the media etc. so now my files don't get missing after unplugging the harddrive. I figured it would be a better idea to make all new projects on the HD, so I have everything in place all the time. BUT. look at the picture: there seems to be something wrong with the way iMovie recognizes the aperture library: i'ts not listed in the events library under the HardDisk (named Passport) but under my own drive... ??? (+ I don't understand the idea of events when I have my aperture library: Do I need to make events for all projects I make? how is this possible when the library is not in the correct position?)
    2. I made a movie, but I'm unable to export a large/high quality version of this project. That's why I want to move my project to the HD and then open it on my partners Mac Book Pro to make a good export. Unfortunately, his macbook doesn't recognize the files and the files can't be opened in iMovie... (files stay gray and unclickable)
    To sum it all up:
I want the best way to work with this set-up: mac book air, external drive with all my files and iMovie.  And I want to be able to open the project on a different computer to make high quality exports.

First thing that comes up with videos in your 'picture' library is the videos are always under the full control of the picture library program. Which means Aperture is the keeper and master, and it decides what will be displayed in iMovie's Event Library. If Aperture is having difficulties sometimes it cannot or will not display the videos you are storing there.
Right now, I think the problem is your Aperture Library is on the internal Mac HD, not the external. You would have to move Aperture's Library to the external HD (along with all the pictures and videos). Then try to add the videos back into a project.
In extreme cases I have recommended moving the videos out of the picture library and re-importing them into iMovie Event folders to let iMovie manage it.

  • Strange problem with Aperture 3

OK folks, this new version of Aperture is ... crippy!
I was browsing through a project I have (I had it from my Aperture 2 library, in case this is important) and a strange thing happened. I have two versions from the same master (a referenced master), which show in the film strip viewer (so I assume the preview is there), but it does NOT show in the viewer window (the top one), nor does it show when I go to full page.
What is strange is that in full page mode, if I select the loupe and move it around, the large circle of the loupe shows me the part of the image I move over. Also, if I zoom in, the zoomed part of the image shows fine, but when I cancel the zoom, the image disappears again.
This is the second time this happened to me, and in both cases, before the problem occured, the viewer got messed, as I was moving from one image to the next.
Even if I try to create a new version from the master, the new version has the same problem.
    Any ideas?

No, there is not.  The times stamp for a file in the Finder is not that of the camera time stamp, even in the Aperture Library in the folder of Masters.  That time stamp will be the date it was imported into Aperture, and not the camera's date taken.
What you are seeing is the way files work in OSX, and nothing to do with the photo timestamp in the EXIF, including that found with More Info.  The other info, such as pixel dimension is common to both paths of getting info.
Btw, an Export from iPhoto results in the same behavior.

  • Language problem with aperture

    Hi all,
    I am new in aperture.
After installing the software (downloaded from appstore), the software is in english except keywords.
All the standard keywords proposed by aperture are in french.
I removed the software, and even deleted preferences files and any other related file to aperture (except my library which was still in the pictures file).
After that I made sure english language was on top of the list in preferences and removed any other language.
Reboot my computer and reinstall aperture from the Purchase tab in the appstore.
Finally, keywords are still in french.
did anyone already encounter this kind of problem ?
Btw, I am using a french canadian keyboard but I don't think this has an impact on the laguage of the soft.
    Thx !
    Ben

All the standard keywords proposed by aperture are in french.
Where do you see "All the standard keywords proposed by aperture "? In the Keywords HUD? The Keywords Controls?
    As Frank Caggiano says:
Keywords are on a per library basis, the keyword file is stored in the library package and if you create a new empty library you will start out with a minimal default set of keywords.
So a new Aperture library shoul start out with default keywords sets in the language you set in the system preferences. But an existing library will keep the keyword sets that were used, when you created the library. Also, any image you already imported will keep the keywords in the original language. And if you import images already tagged with keywords in a different language, the keywords will not change the language according to the new system settings.
The defaukt keyword sets  shown in the Keywords HUD and any custom keywords you create are stored in the library, but not the default button sets of the Keyword Controls. So where are you seeing the keywords in French?

  • Problem with Aperture not syncing iPhoto albums to iPad

Want to sync a few choice old photo albums created in iPhoto to my iPad.    Since I am now running that old iPhoto library in Aperture I should be able to sync selected albums via iTunes, Aperture and USB.
I looked at iTune's photo sync screen and saw that iTunes still distinquishes between iPhoto and Aperture libraries, i.e. one needs to make a choice.
I selected Aperature in the "Sync Photos from" popup and got the following err message:
"Your Aperture Library could not be found. Open the preferences window in Aperture and enable the preference to share previews with other applications."
My iPhoto/Aperture libary easily opened again in Aperture but for the life of me I can not see a preference provision for previewing Aperture albums in anything other than iLife and iWork which was already enabled.
Perhaps Apple is a bit slow in upgrading the detail in their latest Aperture version or are simply screwing people who favor syncing well chosen albums on their iPad in lieu of using iCloud which would require a lot of extra redundant effort to recreate favorite albums so much more easily created in iPhoto/Aperature.

I was experiencing this exact same problem for days and none of the fixes I have found have worked for me, including the one listed here. Only un-installing Aperture allowed me to again sync my iPhoto albums individually again to my iPad2/iPhone4S. Even after re-generating the library for previews/thumbnails, as other posts have suggested to do in Aperture, I still could not see the option to select individual iPhoto Albums as it was greyed out in iTunes.
So here is the simple and odd fix that has just worked for me. When iTunes tells you: "Your Aperture Library could not be found. Open the preferences window in Aperture and enable the preference to share previews with other applications." Do just the opposite. In Aperture Preferences under Preview, with the dropdown after Share Previews with iLife and iWork: select NEVER.
Now if when you open iTunes again, and your option to select individual folders is still greyed out (as happened to me on occastion clearly) do this. Uncheck Sync Photos from iPhoto, select Keep Photos or not depending on what you want and then quit iTunes and DON'T APPLY changes. When you restart iTunes, you should now be able to select individual iPhoto albums.
I realize this doesn't give you options with syncing Aperture Projects, but hey, hopefully Apple will fix this soon.

  • IPhoto performance problems with large library

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro Retina (2013 model) with top-of-line options. The hardware specs are 2.6Ghz Core i7 (8 cores), 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, and OS X 10.9.1 (Mavericks).
The machine came with iPhoto 11 (v9.5.1). I successfully ported my iPhoto library from my old MacBook Pro to the new machine. The iPhoto library is about 550 GB on disk, and consists of about 2000 Events, 95000 Photos, and about 50 Albums & Smart Albums. The images in the library are a mix of JPEG, RAW and other content types such as MOV and AVI etc.
I have measured the performance of the internal SSD with tools like Black Magic and seen read & write speeds in excess of 850 MB/sec (obviously sequential). This is the fastest disk performance of any machine I've ever worked on, so I question whether iPhoto is slow because of this.
Despite the formidable hardware resources of this machine (proven running other workloads), iPhoto still behaves like a dog with my library. Opening iPhoto takes about 10 seconds to get to the first screen. Deleting a bunch of photos will result in a spinning disc for about 10-15 seconds while the images move to the Trash. Emptying the trash with 500-1000 photos takes about 15 minutes. Reorganizing events can take up to 30 seconds. Even browsing from photo to photo incurs lags of several seconds. This lack of response time makes the sw frustrating if not impossible to use efficiently.
During all these delays I have monitored system perfromance with various tools like Activity Monitor and iStat Menus. The odd thing is that when iPhoto is spinning its disc I am not seeing any kind of system resource bottleneck. In other worlds, CPU is barely utilized on any of the 8 cores, disk IO is minimal, and there is zero network IO. To ensure maximum RAM utilization, I run iPhoto after a fresh reboot and do not launch any other apps while it's running. For the life of me I cannot imagine what iPhoto is doing.
I have also tried several of the library recover / rebuild options as well, but no problems were reported with the library and performance did not improve.
I am considering upgrading to Aperture, but I wonder if both these solutions have serious design limitations when working on large libraries, which result in significant performance issues.
I would be interested in learning what experience other users have when working on iPhoto libraries of similar size.
    Summary:
iPhoto library size on disk: 550 GB
    Events: approx 2,000
    Photos: approx 95,000
Albums & Smart Albums: approx 100
    Regards,
    Nico

Hi Léonie, All the sw is at latest update. The library was simply copied from the old machine to the new machine. When I launched the new version of iPhoto (on the new machine) I pointed it to the copied iPhoto library and it picked it up without any issue. The first time I opened it, iPhoto spent some time migrating the data format from the old iPhoto version to the new, but that was done only once. I am not sharing the library between the old iPhoto and new; now the migrated library is for the exclusive use of the new iPhoto.
Regarding error messages in syslog, it's quite funny, I do see them, and they reflect the fact that iPhoto has gone off to la-la land for extended periods of time, ignoring all user input (this is what results in the spinning disc in Mac OS):
1/28/14 9:16:18.792 PM WindowServer[127]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "iPhoto" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.
1/28/14 9:16:20.926 PM WindowServer[127]: common_reenable_update: UI updates were finally reenabled by application "iPhoto" after 3.13 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds)
So that was a common 3 second "hang" of iPhoto. Nothing apart from those kinds of messages.
Thanks for the links to iStat... i do in fact have the latest version of it and don't have that problem with Mavericks.

  • Complicated Problem with Aperture/Older Macs

Hope someone can help me figure this out?   I will try to be as concise as possible.
I have a 2006 Mac Pro that will only run as high as 10.7.5 and will NOT run Aperture 3.X   On that Mac I have Aperture 2.X with over 4K images.
I also have two MBPs.  One is a Mid 2010, on which I stupidly loaded Mavericks without realizing how it would screw up working with my Mac Pro.  The other is a brand new MBP which has 10.10.X on it.  So far, I have not even moved my aperture library to this new MBP.
So; I am stuck in a seam here.  I can't run Aperture 3.X on my Mac Pro, but I can't run Aperture 2.X on my older MBP. I can't upgrade my Mac Pro, but have already upgraded past point of no return on my older MBP.    I have a somewhat large (30+gig) aperture library in Aperture 2.X I want to preserve of course.
I have read everything I can find about Apple moving to one platform i.e. Photos from both Aperture and iPhoto, and have read that I will be "fine".  Whenever someone tells me I will be "fine" I start to worry.
If this is understandable and someone can help, I appreciate it.
    Thanks

I agree that Mr. Lloyd has offered some good conservative advice. But this is a complicated problem. Since you do have a new MBP running Yosemite, I would suggest that you update to the latest version of Yosemite on this new MBP and then purchase the latest (and apparently last) 3.6 version of Aperture and 9.6 version of iPhoto that will be offered in the App store - and then download both Aperture3.6 and the latest version of iPhoto 9.6 to your new Yosemite MBP.
Then go back to your mid 2010 MBP that is running Mavericks, and update that platform to the latest version of Yosemite. Then you can download the latest version of Aperture 3.6 (since you just purchased it for your newest MBP) and iPhoto 9.6 to your updated Yosemite-running 2010 MB. Then you can easily convert your old Aperture 3.X libraries on that 2010 MBP (now Yosemite-running) machine to the latest Aperture vers 3.6 and iPhoto vers 9.6 that you have previously purchased, downloaded and installed.
As for the "ancient" Aperture 2.X library images on your ten year-old MacBook, I would leave them where they are on the machine - carefully backed up and verified on at least one external drive. Since you cannot update that old MacBook to a current viable version of OSX Yosemite, you obviously cannot use the latest version of Aperture or iPhoto on that machine either. BUT, I do believe you can still download a more current (but older) version of iPhoto to your old MacBook, which would then allow you to convert your old Aperture 2.X libraries to newer iPhoto libraries which you could then export and convert to currentiPhoto 9.6 version libraries that you have already installed on your current OSX MBPro's. And once you have created an iPhoto 9.6 library - you can immediately open that iPhoto 9.6 library in the latest Aperture 3.6 version.
IMHO, it is always easier to try and keep all your multiple mac platforms updated and running the same OSX  - and updated and running the latest versions of all important cross-platform software.

  • Problems with Aperture/iphoto

    hello folks
I did downloaded the OS X Mauntain Lion recently on my mac and also the Aperture programan. both programs were working fine until, I started to do some upgrade present on my app box, all of then installed without problem but it was an error on Iphoto upgrade, i click many times to see if the upgrade work but nothing so i decided to deleted.
after this, i started to have problem with my aperture, every time i do try to open  i did receive the following message:
    Caution:
"make sure if you have Iphoto 9.3 or later, if not you need to upgrade it"
                                                                                                                   (ok)
I did tryed to upgrade from app box but was empty, so i tryed to download this iphoto 9.3 so the computer said there is a new version installed. but
Aperture still not opening so, i did open Iphoto as a message recommended to upgrade library, what I did was to select the aperture library to be showed in Iphoto and it works, but after using few times i found another problem
trying to open Aperture the following message appear:
    Warning
There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.
                                                                                                                                    (Quit)
also when I try to open iphoto this message appear:
    Caution:
The current screen resolution is not optimal for iPhoto.
                                                                                                                                    (OK)
if  I do click another message appear:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library.
To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed.
You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
                                                                                                                                   (Quit)
and then close, so none of the program open and i dont know what to do.
anyone knows anything about it, i would apreciate your help

Smart albums should be visible in both applications, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5260
Do your albums contain images, that have been rejected in Aperture, or hidden in iPhoto?
Or have you additional  smart filters set by searches? These will not be visible in iPhoto.
If you have neither rejected not hidden photos in the smart albums, I'd recommend to rebuild your library (after backing it up). See: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

  • Problems with Aperture UI in 3.4.4

    To whom it may concern...
I have a large Aperture Library... and recently I upgraded to Aperture 3.4.4 and ever since the User Interface has been faulty... not displaying the Projects pane correctly and all other issues... not allowing me to see certain buttons I could see before when Importing.... all my Projects and albums appear fine in full screen mode.... but that doesn't allow me easily import new images.... or does it...?
I have tried re-installing and upgrading back to from 3.1.1 to 3.4.4 and still no change... no difference... all my images are there, it's just that the interface seems glitchy and broken and just not displaying as it did before.
Has anyone had similar issues... I have looked online and no one seems to have the same issue...?
I'm terrified my years of Aperture library is corrupted in some way and that I will have to live with this problem...
Any advise or suggestions most welcome.
    Regards,
    Anthony

    Anthony,
test if the broken interface only occurs when working from your regular User account:
See: Isolating an issue by using another user account
Sign into a different account and run Aperture on a new aperture library. Does the user interface work correctly there? If yes, then you may have problematic preferences files or presets in your account.
Remove the Aperture's user preferences from the User Library as described here:
    Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
    Regards
    Léonie
    Note:
Your User Library is hidden by default - to open it in a Finder window use the "Go" menu from the Finder's main menu bar.
Quit Aperture, if it is running:
Open the user library by using the Finder's "Go > Go to Folder" menu and hold down the options-key, until "Library" appears in the drop down menu. Select it.
In the widow that will open, scroll down to "Preferences"
From the "Preferences" folder  remove "com.apple.Aperture.plist".
Then try to launch Aperture again.
But deleting the "Preferences" file will cause Aperture to forget the preferences settings. Be prepared to have to reset all options you set using the Aperture Preferences panel.
