Problems with Appleworks

Have noticed recently that I find it very hard to open appleworks on my IMac. It takes ages, and once I open up a database or WP file, all I get is a multicoloured version of that little spinning wheel. Any thoughts? I've tried to re-install the original disk and there is no improvement.. Is it something to do with memory?
IMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hello
Nothing to do with memory but with the "Recent Items" folder.

  • Problems with AppleWorks drawing docs under Snow Leopard

Since I installed Snow Leopard, I've encountered two major problems:
(Problem 1) AppleWorks gets corrupted when dragging a picture file (.jpg or .png) from the desktop into a drawing document. Various dialogs (e.g. "Format : Document..." or "Format : Ruler : Settings ..." or "Options : Object Size ...") become uneditable. These dialogs will display blank boxes instead of the given object settings, and nothing can be entered into these boxes. AppleWorks must be shut down and restarted in order to continue work.
(Problem 2) When a formula (i.e. an equation) has been created in a MathType window, selected and copied, it takes ages to make AppleWorks the active application (spinning rainbow coloured ball appears and keeps spinning for a long while). Thereafter, it takes another century to get the formula appearing in the AppleWorks document when selecting the command "Edit : Paste".
Everything worked still fine under Leopard; under Snow Leopard it's a desaster.
    p.s.
I've produced thousands of work sheets for my Maths teachings using the Drawing module of AppleWorks in combination with MathType (Design Science). Now I'm stuck since there is no decent successor of AppleWorks available:
    * iWork doesn't feature a drawing module.
    * EazyDraw doesn't collaborate with MathType (i.e. no OLE; inserted formulae cannot be edited by double-clicking).
    * OpenOffice doesn't collaborate with MathType.
    * Micro$oft Office doesn't feature a drawing module.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't use AppleWorks as much as I used to & I've never had a need to use MathType, but I just tried dragging 3 images - a .png, a .tiff & a .jpg - to a new AppleWorks draw document. I had no problems resizing them using Format > Scale by percent & I had no problems using any of the other dialog boxes you mention.
Some basic troubleshooting you might try:
Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them. You should do this step anytime AppleWorks crashes or you force quit it.
The slowness is likely the "Recent Items bug" & it has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.
Could you send me a copy of one of these worksheets? Perhaps I can see if I can easily duplicate one in Pages/Numbers/Keynote. Even though iWork doesn't have a draw app, all of the apps do have basic drawing capabilities.

  • Problems with AppleWorks Update

I too am having problems with AW on my new Macbook. I was getting repeated crashes, so I removed AW, then reinstalled it from the DVD. It was still crashing whenever I tried to hit spellcheck, or even tried to save and close the document. I went to support and got the 6.9 updater for leopard. But the updater keeps showing the message that there is something already in the place of the updater?
AW has always been rock solid on my emac, 10.5.2 is running on both macbook and emac, but it's on macbook with leopard that is driving me nuts. Help Anyone?

Removing AppleWorks & reinstalling does not fix corruption causing & caused by crashing. The corruption lies in AppleWorks' preferences which are stored separately for each user. See this user tip for more information.

  • Problem with AppleWorks documents when connecting via ftp to my server

When I connect over the internet using ftp to my mac mini server (using OS X server 10.4.10) from my iMac G4 (using 10.4.10) all my AppleWork docs will only appear as .bin instead of .cwk.
If I download one to my G4, it will try to open using stuffit expander but cannot be opened. It comes up with “An error ocurred attempting to expand name.bin unspecified Stuffit Engine internal error” Error #17999
However Microsoft Word docs show correctly and can be downloaded and opened without problem.
When I try directly on the server or try from any computer on the local network conected to the server, everthing views correctly and can be opened.
Could it be to do with any settings on the server when connecting by ftp.
    Thanks for the help.

One problem still remains that when I download minicad files (which uses OS 9) they show up as .exe and will not open or recognisable by the programme
I imagine the file is transferring without a suffix and your computer is trying to guess what it is; hence the .exe. Delete this and append the suffix for the correct program and it should open (or use File>Open within the program).

  • Problem with Appleworks updater

trying to use the updater to 6.2.9 it refuses to execute giving the message: "the default location for this install could not be found. the install will be cancelled".
Appleworks is in the Applications folder and nothing special has been done during any install so all should be in the correct place....
Absolutely no idea what to do next....

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
The error message usually means it can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reasons are:
    1. The language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions. There are several websites with links to incorrect updaters. The UK Apple site in particular has been known to point to the north American updater for quite some time. The most reliable links are on this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation.
    2. The application has been moved. The folder containing AppleWorks 6 must be named AppleWorks 6 AND be in the same folder with its support folders. The second part of my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, explains more.

  • Problem with HP DeskJet 845c in 10.4 Tiger

Recently I migrated an iBook G3 from Mac OS 9 to MacOS X (Tiger 10.4.10). And we also use a new MacBook.
But there's a big problem with the *HP DeskJet 845c* Printer:
    - printing works with Word, but *doesn't with AppleWorks or Mail (2.1.1)*
    - I have the latest Updates and looked for the latest HP DeskJet software, but this is the newest, version 3.3
    - I spoke with HP support, but they said that this is a problem in OS X
    - until now in MacOS 9 the printer worked fine
    The problem is:
    - from Mail only the header will be printed, but not the message itself
    - from AppleWorks is ssems as if only the first "pixel-rows are printed from each line
    Any help?

Hello, Same problem with HP Deskjet 895Cse. I had printer on my G4 tower running 10.3. My macbook pro was networked through the G4 to printer, all good. I just moved my printer and plugged in directly to macboook pro USB port................ Iregular printing. With normal size fonts, 12, just the top few pixels of each sentence gets printed. With larger fonts like 36 or 48, the print is pretty interesting, but not readable. Sometmes it just spits out pages with 1 sentence, top bit only, on each page. Appleworks, word & pdf's from preview, all print the same. HP alignment, HP test , HP clean all show normal. ?????????????????????

  • Printing problem with converted AW files

I've searched the forum for an answer to this to no avail, so here goes...
My wife recently bought a Mac mini as an upgrade to her "classic" iMac. I've managed to get the majority of her old files transferred over to the new machine but recently ran across a frustrating problem. She has created many files on her old machine using AppleWorks 5.0.3 and wants to use these files on her new machine using AW 6.2.9. The files open and edit fine, but when we go to print, her HP DeskJet 832C bucks and coughs and tries to print but only gets about 3/4 through the first page then stops. I've checked to make sure the printer driver is current and also reinstalled AppleWorks, but the same problem occurs. Any new files she creates using AW 6.2.9 print just fine and other software on the computer prints docments OK, too (PDFs, calendar, etc.). It appears to be just the converted AppleWorks files that complain. I can even copy the text from an old file to a new file in AppleWorks and THAT prints fine, but that's a hassle. Any ideas on this problem? Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks.
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Mac OS is "confused" about what program these files belong to & so gives them a generic one. This can be a result of not using Disk Utility to repair permissions after a system update. It is easily fixed.
Highlight a known AppleWorks document in the Finder, highlight it & choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Get Info box, click the triangle next to "Open With." Click on this drop-down menu & choose AppleWorks 6. If AppleWorks 6 is not a choice, choose "Other" & navigate to the AppleWorks 6 application. Now click the "Change" button under the text that asks if you want to open all documents like this with AppleWorks 6.
Sometimes it can happen if files are transfered from one Mac to another using a PC-formatted disk. I have written a user tip dealing with this, AppleWorks 6 won't open my AW 5 files. Even though the title says AppleWorks 5 files, it also applies to not being able to open AppleWorks 6 files.

  • Printing problem with Epson R290

I am running CS2 on Leopard and have recently purchased an Epson R290. The first time I used it with Illustrator and InDesign it worked fine but now whenever I print anything it prints a tiny version (about a sixth of the real size) of the design in the top left corner of the page. It does this both with new documents and old ones that used to print ok.

Since I posted the message about this problem I have discovered that it can be worked around by choosing a higher quality print. ie if you choose plain paper when printing from Illustrator or InDesign the printer prints a reduced size image but if you choose Ink jet mat or glossy the print comes out fine. I don't have this problem with Photoshop but that may be that I always print high quality from that application. I don't use Appleworks Draw so don't know whether this solves the problem for that application but iWork documents print ok.

  • Printer problem with AW 6.2.9

I have a recurring printer problem with both hp deskjet 5150 and Epson R220. After much work with techs at both, we have determined that it is an AW problem (v. 6.2.9) Other files print okay. I've searched through recent posts and found similiar questions, but the answers aren't specific to my problem. I gather that it involves trashing certain AW files, such as Appleworks.plist and other Appleworks prefs. It will help it I know the specific files to trash and as much detail about how to find them on the HD. I will be infinitely grateful for any help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You are correct that deleting the AppleWorks preferences can fix some printing problems. I'm surprised that in finding that information you didn't come across a post with the specific information or a tip to my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, that explains which preference files ot delete.
Make sure you have the newest printer driver for each printer. Also, use Disk Utility to repair permissions after any system update or upgrade.

  • Problem with saving a new document

hey i just wrote a new document and when i try to save it, it says "the file 'untitled' can not be opened because it has been deleted" which is really confusing me because i am not trying to save it as untitle nor am i trying to open anything.
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
This is a problem with no specific cause. It usually is fixed by using Disk Utility to repair permissions and deleting the AppleWorks 6 preferences. See my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for more on the preferences.

  • I have an Imac  operating system 10.4.1 and Apple Works 6 and am having problems with Aplle Works 6. Is there a place I can download Apple Works 6 onto my computer?

I have an Imac  operating system 10.4.1 and Apple Works 6 and am having problems with Aplle Works 6. It shuts down before I am finished. Is there a place I can download Apple Works 6 onto my computer free?

AppleWorks has never been available for legal download.
Have you done the usual trouble shooting steps:
    Quit AppleWorks
Delete most or all of the Recent Items list.
Remove the Preferences files to the Desktop or to the Trash.
Launch AppleWorks to see if the problems remain.
    You'll find Recent Items in:
username > Documents > AppleWorks User Documents > Starting Points > Recent Items
    There are several preferences files.
    Go to:
    username > Library > Preferences
Locate, select and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist
Still in the Preferences floder, locate and open the folder AppleWorks.
Select and delete the two Cache files and the Preferences file.
Button Bars is also a preferences file, but may be left where it is IF you have no problems that appear related to the Button Bar, and wish to preserve any changes you've made to the Button Bar.

    Barry

  • Problems - Sherlock & Appleworks

I have always loved Macs but this one is giving me nothing but problems. Sherlock - can no longer search the hard disk. It just has internet stuff. When I use find, I cannot figure out how to search for appleworks documents - it just pulls up the application. I'm trying to find out how many docouments were originally saved in appleworks.
And every time I try to translate a documenton the new computer, it insists on using appleworks. I like Textedit for most of documents and just use appleworks for some databases. But if I save in textedit, then it tries to open with appleworks and can't translate. Do I need to just trash appleworks? I like it for spreadsheets and databases but I prefer textedit for normal documents.
I would gladly return this computer and use my old one if it were fast enough but I'm three weeks in to trying to get this thing where I can work from it. I wish they would stop adding "improvements".
Anybody else running into these problems. Am I missing something simple? Thanks.

Have you tried using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk?
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
If that goes OK, Repair Permissions from Disk Utility located in your utilities folder on your hard drive.
Spotlight, the little blue ball on the far right side of your title bar, can search your Mac till you get Sherlock working. Click on it, and enter what you are searching for.
    Cheers! DALE
