Problems with burning a DVD

I created a project on iDVD,copied from a VHS tape, everything seemed to go well, I checked the paths to make sure there were no errors, put in a blank dvd (only had dual layer, didnt need it) encoded in best performance, and started the burn process. At the end of burning, during multiplexing and (something else I dont remember) the dvd kicked out before the process was done. It did say 'done' in small letters below the line measuring how much is done, and seemed to be done.
Any help on what might be going on here would be appreciated.
OH yea. The DVD wont play in a DVD player. That is my problem.

I'm assuming nothing was written to the disc in that case. But let's make sure. What happens when you simply insert your DL DVD into your mac exactly? Does it open the Finder / a dialog box of any kind? If so, nothing was actually written to your dvd.
Let's try to burn a disc image to the desktop right now from the file menu in iDvd. If it plays back well using apple's dvd player app. Then we need to look closely at either media or internal hardware. If the image cannot be read by your mac then we likely have a content issue. Hopefully this makes sense.
The next step is to figure out why it failed to burn to disc. Could be as simple as a dirty dvd lens or as complicated as a hardware issue with the internal S-Drive on your mac (rare but it happens). If you suspect the latter then run an extended Hardware Test on your mac. If you own a quality dvd lens cleaner kit from Maxell or 3M, use it now.

  • IDVD Problem with burning a DVD

    Whenever I try to burn a DVD using iDVD, I get this message "Multiplexer Error:  There was an error during building.  This disc is still untouched and may be reused later."  I've tried this with 3 different DVDs and keep getting this problem.  Can someone help? Thanks!

    Here you go:
    1) Delete all old iDVD projects that you couldn't burn under the same name;
    2) Reboot your PC;
    3) Quit all open applications (check if any is open at "Force Quit");
    4) Go to: Users/Library/Caches and delete folder com.apple.idvd
    5) Go to: Users/Library/Preference and delete file com.apple.idvd.lists
    6) Insert a blank DVD;
    7) Go to "Applications" and open iDVD (don't open it from any previous iDVD project);
    8) Select " Create new project" and prepare your project;
    9) Go to iDVD Preferences / Advance / Burning Speed: and select 4x ;
    10) Go to menu "Advance" and deselect "Encode in Background";
    11)  At the same above menu, click "Delete encoded projects" and select OK (ignore alert messages);
    12) Select "Burn" and... no more problems

    I cannot burn a DVD, i get a message
    There seems to be too much motion menu content in your project. Correct this problem before you continue burning this project.
    But i am not sure how to fix it.
    Please help.
    And also if i want for a PC user to be able to play my DVD-do i import a movie in iMovie format or in QuickTime format?
    Thank you

    Hi Natasha:
    Welcome to discussions!
    This is how to eliviate the Motion Menu Problems:
    iDVD 6: Exceeding motion menu duration prevents burning

    You should be able to play the DVD on a PC when you are done in either format. The only way it wouldn't work would be if the PC didn't play the type of DVD media you used to burn your movie. (ie.,DVD+/-R)

  • Problem with external LaCie dvd burner

    This is not strictly a Mac question but I have a firewire LaCie cd/dvd burner that has stopped recognizing any cds. When you insert a cd it clicks and the light blinks forever. It has no problems with dvds. Could this just need to have the lens cleaned or is it on its way out? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

    I know that it would be better to talk to the manufacturer but it is extremely difficult to contact LaCie tech support now. One used to be able to just e-mail them a question but now it ain't that simple. Just thought I'd see if anyone else had a similar problem with a cd/dvd burner.

  • Problem with burning DVD's

    I have Roxio Toast Titanium and I have a problem with burning DVD's. When I put a blank DVD-R in my superdrive, select the files and go to burn; the advanced recording options will not let me deselect the check in "close disk". It is shaded. But when I use a CD-RW I can and so far the Roxio help has...well has not been help at all. I mean why would I spend the money to buy a software package that lets me do the same thing as the basic OS-X disk utility would let me do? Drag a file, burn it and close the disk from any future use....
    Sorry if this does not belong here, I did not see a area for general software questions way back in the main forum area not one here.

    Donald,
    Hi and thank you.
    To give you more details on what I am trying to do; I am trying to burn in Mac & PC format. I am mainly trying to back up all my assorted college files (I am a college student), these files are lecture notes in Word with embedded audio recordings, standard Word documents such as essays, etc., spreadsheets, PDF documents, etc. The files I am attempting to burn should not be larger than 4.7 gb and Roxio has not given me a warning that it would be.
    I am just frustrated that when I put in a DVD-R or -RW I only have one option, and that is to close out the disk when it is finished burning it. I have also gone to the recording tab, on the menue bar, to uncheck the "close disk" box after I put in a blank DVD and before I select files to burn. The option is shadded preventing me from even trying, which is not the case for a CD!
    Thank you!

  • IDVD - problem with playability of DVDs burned

    Hello -
    I'm experiencing trouble when I export a Quicktime file from my Final Cut Pro 5 to burn to a DVD using iDVD5 on my home computer. All worked fine up until about a month ago. I'm unclear what I could have changed in terms of settings at that time that's caused the problem, but here is the situation I'm now experiencing:
    When I burn a DVD using my iDVD5, the DVD will play in a computer, but it is not readable on a normal DVD player. It's unrecognized as a playable DVD.
    If I take the exact same Quicktime file and the exact same blank DVD (I'm currently using blanks that are TDK DVD-R) over to a friend's house and burn the DVD using his iDVD, the DVD is playable in a DVD player and works just fine.
    So something in my iDVD settings seems to have gotten very badly messed up. What can I do to fix this?
    Many thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

    It looks like it would cost as much to buy a new external DVD burner as it would to have the internal one for my computer fixed,...?!
    True!
    EDIT: You have a G5 iMac ...correct? If I'm not mistaken, it too has a smaller slot loading S-Drive.
    Yours might looks somewhat like this:
    If so, then it too could experience the above symptoms of overheating after multiple consecutive burns/ back to back DVD's.

  • Problems with burned DVD in iDVD - Works in some players, not in others

    Hi, I'm having a strange problem with a DVD I burned in iDVD.
    I have a disc image that I made in iDVD and then burn the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders to a DVD.
    I burned to a Memorex DVD+R.
    The video pops up fine and plays on my computer after it burns, but if I eject the disc and try to re-insert it, the DVD preview says "Supported disc not found". It did this same thing when I tried it in my Macbook.
    It works fine in my standard DVD player, but I also tried it on my Playstation 3 and it did not play.
    A few things I am going to try is buring directly from iDVD instead of first making a disc image, and also using DVD-R, although I heard that DVD+R is generally a better format to use.
    Someone also told me that DVD+R does not play on macs, which I question.
    If anyone has any other suggestions or might know why this is happening, I would greatly appreciate it. It is an important project that needs to be done soon! Thanks.

    The disc image option is within iDVD: File > Save as Disc Image. If you switch to DVD map map mode you can drag your movie to a spot prior to the menu so that the movie plays automatically when put into the player. Under advanced, you can set the movie to loop.... otherwise I think it goes back to the menu when done playing. BTW, all DVDs MUST have a menu it is part of the DVD specification. It is just a matter of whether you see the menu. As far as exporting your project back to tape... you won't loose any quality and your audio, along with your video and any editing to each will export back to tape. However, a MP3 is not generally considered a higher quality file (although perhaps the recorder was closer to the source?). As a matter of fact, if you are editing your audio I strongly suggest using a file sampled at at least 16-bit/48Khz, AIFF (or WAV or anything lossless).
    In regards to the slow burn speed: I agree that a slower burn speed is better than the fastest burn speed (due to error corrections ect). However, I would choose a middle of the road burn speed. If my choices are 4x, 6x, or 8x, I would choose 6x. If it is 2x, 4x, 6x, I would choose 4x. And yes, quality of blank media can effect the playback of a disc that played once just fine.

  • Problem with Burning DVD/Audio

    iMovie HD version 5.0.2. I have been editing movies and burning DVDs for more than a year and have not encountered this problem before. When I play my latest movie, there doesn't seem to be a problem with the music that I imported in only one of the audio tracks. However, when I try to burn a DVD, the video encoding proceeds as usual but the audio encoding stalls when it appears to be about 90% complete. I have produced movies that are 2 hours long and have not run into this problem. The current movie is a little over 1 hour long, so I don't think the length is a problem.
    Background info: As in the past, the source of the movie I am editing is a DVD that Walmart converted from old video films. I CINEMATIZED the DVD which I have done in the past to be able to edit the movie. When I copied the WALMART version of the movie, I only imported/copied the video portion and NOT the audio.
    I hope this explanation of my problem is detailed enough. I am not very technologically educated so I am limited in my ability to explain the details.

    Hi
    May be this applies.
    *No audio on DVD disc.*
    Most common origin:
    1 Imported audio from iTunes:
    • In iTunes copy out as an audio-CD .aiff
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2 Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    Before burning the DVD:
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
    If OK:
    • Make Your DVD - or -
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple Disk Util tool - and at an as slow speed as possibly eg x1
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

    Thanks for any help!

    Hi iRose,
    Thanks for giving all your info. Your free space on your hard drive is not enough to do a successful burn of the entire iPhoto Library. Do you have an external drive? Is your drive supported for iPhoto burning? usually on the internal that comes with the computer is supported.
    Try instead to burn the entire iPhoto Library folder in the Finder using your external burner.
    Close iPhoto
    I can't burn a Cd or DVD
    The next info is from iPhoto FAQ on the Apple site
    Question 5: Can I burn a CD or DVD to back up my iPhoto library?
    Answer: Yes, you can easily back up your iPhoto library by using the CD burning capabilities of Mac OS X. Simply insert a blank CD into your internal or external CD-RW drive and copy the iPhoto library to the CD icon on your desktop. When you drag the CD icon to the Trash/Eject button in the Dock, you are given the option to burn the CD. Click Burn and the CD is created. To burn a DVD backup of your digital images, use iDVD and a SuperDrive-equipped Mac.

  • Problem with burning a VCD and a DVD in Photoshop Elements 7

    For some reason I can no longer burn a DVD or a VCD thru elements.  When trying to burn a VCD on the Burn Screen Popup Screen under Select Destination Drive is blank and where you would select Drive speed nothing is in the drop down menu.
    on creating a DVD  when it comes up to burn disk under status no burners detected shows up.
    I have created DVD's and VCDs before dont know why I'm having problem now.
    I'm using Vista.  In the past when using XP I believe I had to deselect DLA option on Drive where I burn but this option is not available to select.
    I have no problem burning DVD or VCDs via windows.

    Walter,
    As Paul_LS states, the movies need to be combined in PE (or another editing program) due to the DVD-specs. They allow only one movie (in your case the combined Projects) per DVD disc. There are a few programs that can "hack" the DVD structure, but they are a lot of work, and usually do not yield the results that the user is seeking. This is not a limitation of PE.
    You can also place your DVD Markers to the start of each of these movies, to all navigation in the DVD to each, should you wish.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • PROBLEMS WITH PLAYBACK ON DVDS - BURNED WITH iDVD8

    Can anyone tell me what is the best speed to use when burning a DVD. I have been using the maximum speed (which I believe my computer defaults to). When I play back on a DVD player it will freeze in certain parts. When I have finished burning the DVD I have noticed grease marks and other small marks on the disc. I have been told it is because I am burning them too fast. I have since tried using 2X and am having the same problem. I am using IDVD8 and DVD-R discs.

    It may be the brand of disc. Try Verbatim DVD-R or Verbatim DVD+R DL.

  • Problem with burning DVD

    Hi,
    Is there anybody who can help me? I try to burn a lot of photos at DVD (DVD+R), but there are problems. Burning is OK, but veryfying not. Then I get the message "Sector 1 unreadeble" and that's it. I got a new DVD station in my iMac, but the problem still goes on.

    Does your iMac have an internal CD/DVD drive, or are you using an external CD/DVD burner?  If it's an external USB burner, do you have *ANY* other USB devices connected to your Mac other than your keyboard and/or mouse?

  • Problem with photos on dvd output

    Not sure where the kink is in my process, exactly, but maybe someone will have run into this before...
    i'm working with hi-res photos in my FCP sequences mixed with HDV video. I've been using the motion tab to resize and everything looks fine in final cut. When i use compressor to output the m2v file using the standard dvd presets, some of the stills have problems on the resulting file. not all of them look bad and it doesn't seem to be discriminating based on resolution of the original image file. I'm sure there's a good explanation, but the photos that get messed up seem to be random. some look great.
    In the .m2v file played directly off of QT, they sort of just look darker, like perhaps they are interlaced strangely or something and the even or odd rows are black. but when i use that file to burn a dvd in dvd studio pro, the resulting image looks crazy messed up. Anyone know how to wrangle this one? Thanks

    In case someone else runs into this problem, i did some extensive chatting with a final cut guru guy and all we could figure out is that i'm experiencing some sort of bug. that it shouldn't have been doing what it was doing. It started happening after my boss upgraded all of the studio software and quicktime to the latest versions. upon closer inspection, what was happening is that some of my photos were missing fields when exported as a qt, some weird byproduct of interlacing. we tried the settings all sorts of different ways and the problem did, indeed, go away when i changed the sequence to progressive, but i didn't want to sacrifice resolution of the rest of the footage just because of the problem with the few photos that were janky, so i found two workarounds that fixed the problem...
    1) using the de-interlace effect on just the photos that were giving me problems. it lowered the resolution, but not enough to make a difference and it looked good.
    2) using the motion blur effect. This filled in the missing fields and i did it at such an unnoticeable setting that it might have even looked better than the pictures i de-interlaced.
    If this jogs someone's brain as to what the actual problem was in the first place and you think it's not just a bug in the system, then i'd be interested to hear how to avoid the problem in the future.
