Problems with CMYK/LAB colors

I'm independent and I send many print jobs to different print shops. I recently discovered to my horror that some color critical jobs have gone to press (to the same shop) with mismatched PMS colors. At first I blamed the print shop but they complained the CMYK values did not match. When I opened the two brochures in question, one had (for example) Pantone 288 C, color type spot, Color mode CMYK, 100/67/0/23 (dimmed because the colors came from an imported illustrator eps logo). The second (bad) brochure had the same color and color type, but in the mix it had Color Mode: Lab, L 8.039, a 8, b -50 - greyed out because again, the color came from the SAME eps file.
My next step was to remove the logo file from the bad Indesign doc. Then I doublechecked the color - success, the color now says color mode: Pantone solid coated, 288 C (which is from the built-in indesign swatch book). Then I brought BACK IN the logo file from the brochure that printed correctly. The color reverts back to LAB again!
When I import this same logo into a blank document, the colors are fine (CMYK with proper values).
I'd seen in other forums suggestions to check or uncheck "Use Standard Lab Values for Spots" in the Ink Manager, however both documents have this unchecked. (Adobe seems to encourage checking LAB but I've never done this, I'm afraid to start now as it will probably give my print shops fits.) And both have "convert spots to process" checked, which I always thought was the cure-all: shouldn't PMS 288 (CMYK) always be PMS 288 (CMYK), as long as both are converted to process? Why would one being a LAB and the other NOT being a LAB make them different? 288 should be 288....? (but I guess not....)
The good news is, the Zevrix extension "InPreFlight" will warn me if run on each document, so I don't have to drive myself crazy opening old files and doubleclicking every color. But I'm wondering what the heck is happening.
CLUE: I believe this all stemmed from a "brilliant" idea I had to shorten the list of color types to choose from by going into Indesign>Presets>Swatch Libraries and removing libraries I'd thought I wasn't using - I left all my Pantones, but I must have deleted an important one, because it was after I'd done this that I had noticed the Lab colors rearing their ugly heads. However it didn't occur to me that LAB (CMYK) would be different from regular CMYK since they have the same name. When I replaced this folder with one from another mac, viola, the problems stopped. However it doesn't stop the old, previously created files from continuing to open wrong and be printed wrong, if I don't catch them.
Any insight anyone could provide would prove most helpful. It would be nice to get a night's sleep for a change.....thanks!
FYI I'm using Indesign CS3 5.0.4 (recently updated) with Color Settings CMYK: U.S. Sheetfed Coated v2 and color management policies-preserve numbers (ignore linked profiles).

>one had (for example) Pantone 288 C, color type spot,
Mike, you are implying in your post that your jobs are being output as CMYK, but your colors are set as spots. If that's the case your printer is converting the spot colors to process CMYK, which would cause the problem you are describingPantone Solid colors are converted to CMYK via color management when Use Lab is checked. The resulting output values would depend on the document's destination CMYK profile.
If your job is indeed CMYK you should stop using the Pantone Solid library and use the Solid to Process library instead, which always output as Pantones CMYK builds.
Use Lab is useful when a job is to be output as Spot color because you will likely get a more accurate preview of the color and a better proof to a composite printer. Many Pantone colors are out of the CMYK gamut. Lab can also be useful if you are sending a job to CMYK and you want to color manage the conversion of a solid color to CMYK, rather than using Pantones built formulas which are device dependent.

  • Color problem with ProPhoto RGB color space

    Hi, everyone,
I have wery special problem I think. I use MacBook pro 15" with retina display, adobe Photoshop CC and when I export RAW (from Nikon D7000) from Lightroom 5 to Photoshop with settings: 16 bit TIF, color space: ProPhoto RGB I have a problem with displaying the correct colors. As you can see in this picture:
My problem are some "green" artefacts in absolutely black and white picture. I tried myself to solve this problem and found the following facts: when I convert picture into Adobe RGB or sRGB color space is everything OK - without green artefacts.
But here is one important fact: I have calibrated monitor by datacolor spyder4elite and problem with ProPhoto RGB incorrect color displaying is only when the color calibration configuration is loaded. When I change my display calibration to standard apple color LCD profile than is everything OK.
But using uncalibrated monitor and also Adobe RGB color space are no right solutions for me.
My question is why I have problem with displaying ProPhoto RGB color space in photoshop under calibrated monitor profile and can anybody help me please?
    Thanks for answers.

That's a classic example of the basic problem with 16 bit color. There is no solution that I know of.

  • Problems with CMYK Colours changing to LAB

We have a problem at work.
In our office we work with CS6(illustrator and indesign). We save our documents on a server so my colleague can see the things I design and change things. Here's our problem. When I save documents with the right pantone colors on my imac they change on my colleague's imac to LAB colors when he opens the documents. So he has to change the colors again to CMYK.
Does this have anything to do with the differences between our color libraries or maybe updates?
I hope someone can help us, it will save us a lot of changing colors!

You have to create two documents. One Spot color. One CMYK Process color.  Distribute the CMYK Process version on the server and leave the Spot version on your local machine ( to be sent to the print vendor ). Another option is to distribute the CMYK version as a PDF.  Unfortunately, when you distribute to a server and other people have the opportunity to open and edit your documents, these type of deviations happen.  So, you have to play smart and distribute something everyone can read as accurate.  If I were you, in the copy of the original, create swatches using the CMYK conversion numbers you are accustomed to and comfortable with.  But, as previously posted, Spot color with remain Spot color and will print as Spot color.  It's just the color communication that is getting skewed by the software and different users, different systems, etc.  I hope you are the captain of the ship and noone else is dealing with the print vendor.  Otherwise, you might have a real mess on your hands.

  • Problem with cmyk transparency blending in Indesign cs6

Hello everyone! Please give me someone an information about this issue...
All i have in indesign is cmyk color space in all contents, i have set up the transparency blending option to CMYK (edit > transparency blending > cmyk) but when i set the gradient feather on image 1 i have very bad result the transparency is greyscaled not transparent.
I try everything but nothin works for me, please help me somebody.
example 1 show the bad result in cmyk blending transparency
example 2 show the better result with rgb blending transparency with cmyk contents !!!
why i can not set the cmyk transparency blending option? because i have bad result and i do not uderstand that

please explain me the difference in this proces because i do not understand that...
The effect of transparency changes depending on the color mode, that's why you get this warning when you try to change color modes in Photoshop when there is transparency:
I can replicate your problem in Photoshop by layering transparent black on an RGB and CMYK version of the same image (Here are the 2 example files—http://www.zenodesign.com/forum/TransExample.zip) :
InDesign makes things even more complex because you can have different transparent color modes on the same page and you can choose different blending spaces. If color is important I take the extra time to create transparency in a Photoshop RGB file where there's more color contol and I can see the affect of a CMYK conversion and flattening.

  • Problem with HP 3600n Color Laserjet Printer and new HP Notebook Running 64 bit Win7

I have a new HP notebook (dv7t-6100) with Core-i7 Processor, running 64 bit Windows 7 with all of the latest updates.
I also have a 27" iMac with Core-i7 Processor running 64 bit Windows 7 underneath Parallels 7. Parallels is a program that creates a virtual machine underneath Mac OSX.
Both versions of 64 bit Windows 7 work perfectly . . . EXCEPT, neither will print from my HP 3600n Color Laserjet. The iMac will print to the 3600n in OSX mode, and an earlier version of 32 bit Windows 7 under Parallels printed perfectly with this 3600n printer.
These facts prove that the printer is OK, the connection is OK. However, the 64 bit Windows 7 systems do not print.
In both of the 64 bit Windows 7 installs I allowed Windows to find and download the HP driver for this printer. Install of the driver was apparently successful. Still no printing.
One strange fact: Sometimes when I turn the computer off, the 3600n printer will print the items that had been in the queue before powering down. That is the only time it has printed anything . . . except under OSX on the iMac.
Does anyone know if there is a basic problem with 64 bit Windows 7 and this printer ?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

I just had the same problem with my MacBook Pro using 10.5.5 After trying a number of things, the following worked. (not sure what specifically ... just did this combination)
    1. Had the Apple store Genius Bar folks install the latest HP drivers.
    2. Restart computer
    3. Restart the HP Color LaserJet 3600
    4. Connected the HP printer and MacBook Pro directly into a switch, so the wireless was not an issue (both machines had IP addresses set and computer's was set to DHCP with manual IP).
    5. Instead of using the System Preference printing and fax tool, I started Text Edit, typed something and said "print".
Print window came up and said "no printer selected"
    6. I clicked on the drop down so it would look for printers.
    7. It found the HP Color LaserJet 3600.
    8. I clicked on the name of the printer and the computer went out and found the driver
    9. I clicked on "Add" and it added the printer.
    10. I tried a couple of test prints in different programs.
    11. I disconnected the hard wired ethernet cables and set the computer to be on the wireless.
    12. I printed a few more test prints in various programs.
I had previously tried selecting the printer and drivers through the System Preferences to no avail, but doing it this way worked.
    Blessings

  • Problem with printing true colors

Had PSE7 and colors printed true and beautiful. Upgraded to PSE10 and all of a sudden colors printed muddy and dull with purplish overcast. Took printer in for service but problem persisted. Upgraded to PSE11 and once again colors were printing true and beautiful for over a year. Printed a card about 5 days ago using PSE11 - beautiful. Printed a card yesterday using PSE11 and colors muddy and dull with purplish overtones. Installed  PSE13 and colors printing dull, muddy with purplish overcast..  I feel it is a problem somewhere in settings of PSE, but can't figure out where.  I don't think it is a problem with printer. Both printer and PSE set to Adobe RGB. Color control set to optimize for printer. Using PC with Windows 7, 64 bit. Printer is Epson stylus photo 1400.  Thanks for any help, Merrie

  • Problem with Adobe Illustrator color

I am using Illustraot 6.5 on my iMac G5, and for the most part it works well. But today I have an unusual problem.
A few days ago I was running some test prints of an Illustrator document (with a color photo), and in order to conserve color ink, under Print=>Color
I chose "Print Colors in Black" rather than "Color" under the "Composite" section. This produced a garish green/black look on the color photo I was printing. Which was fine for my tests.
Today I wanted to print the photo in normal colors, so I changed to "Color". But I am still getting the same gross bile-green look in the photo. What else do I need to do to bring back my lovely flesh tones?

    HI AGAIN,
Please note my gaffe--I should be talking about PAGERMAKER 6.5--not Illustrator--in the above post about problems with color.
Sorry for the confusion--my inexperience betrays me!

  • Problems with a HP Color LaserJet 2550Ln

    Hello,
we try to print SAP Script Forms on a HP Color Laser Jet 2550. I found no exact matching driver or device type for this printer on the SAP Website.
On the printout all formatted text are scrumbled. All texts without a textformat and boxes are printed correct. Does someone else have the same problems with other color laser printers and how did you solve the problem ?
    Thank you in advance.

Try HPLJ4000, HP2200. I think the printer also supports post script, try POST2 also.
Try HP provided device types close to your printer from the following website:

  • IPhoto '08 problem with CMYK photos

I notice something on iPhoto 06 and 08, when i use a photo in RGB mode the colors look great, but if i use a CMYK photo looks very bad...
    See the difference:
    http://www.welove.com.pt/iphoto_CMYK.png
    http://www.welove.com.pt/iphoto_RGB.png
is it collor settings problem or a bug?
    Anybody?

The iLife apps are consumer level applications targeted at the general population and designed for easiest use. . For professionals Apple provides a series of pro applications that will work with a greater number of file formats, etc. iPhoto is not geared towards the professional as it does not nearly fit the DAM (Digital Asset Management) requiements for good image management. CMYK has never been supported by iPhoto. CMYK if more for the high end printers that professionals use.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photoshop Elements 8 - is anyone having a problem with the screen color ?

I just installed Elements 8 & the screen color has 2 choices:
DARK (Black screen with Black & Grey text)
LIGHT (Dark Grey screen with Black text)
BOTH of these are VERY difficult to read & some text just dissapears into the background.
After speaking with the tech at Adobe, these are the only 2 choices (Dark & Light) I have.
Neither choice is worth the eye strain.
Is anyone else having the same problem ?
Has anyone found a solution ?

Thanks again. I use 125% on a 23" widescreen Acer monitor. The menus display on both the PSE7 and 9 Editor but not on the 7 or 9 Organizer. For both Organizers, I get a blank space where the menu should be - and at the right of that space, the tiny, double-arrow drop-down is nearly invisible. On 7, I slid the Edit/Preferences/General/Appearance/Brightness control to the far right in order to see the drop-down arrows. But even so, clicking the drop-down then scrolling down to select the desired menu is a nuisance. On Organizer 9, I have not been able to find any Brightness or other window-color adjustment in Preferences or in any menu option, so the drop-down arrow is extremely difficult to see. Even if the menus were visible, as with the Editors, the dark grays and blacks of the windows strain my eyes. PSE has some great features, and 9 is beter that 7, but I don't want to use a photo editing app that is visually difficult to navigate. Please let me know if there is a fix for the menu display or the window brightness/color.

  • Problems with Scrollable Content : colored lines appear

    Hello,
We have a book with several Scrollable Content (around a total of 200).
The fact is that in many colored lines appear. These lines appear i disappear when changing article,
    anyone have any solution?
    THANKS

    Hi
I had the same problem. I had pasted the scrollable content directly into the container frame, but the pasted content was slightly 'taller' than the container window (the pasted object group was maybe 0.012 pixels larger than the container, so very slight) this caused it to display the coloured lines when I moved it up or down, although left and right movement worked fine. Resizing so the pasted content was smaller and exact pixels not 0.123 px (or the same size) as the container fixed it.

  • Uh Oh, Possible Problem with GPU-based Color Management

NOTE:  The following could be an unwelcome side effect of installing the ATI 12.11 Beta 4 display driver, which I installed yesterday to try out with my Radeon HD 7850.
Consider this PNG image file - nothing special, sRGB color space, some well-saturated greenish colors...
It looks like this to me when opened into Photoshop CS6 with either Normal or Advanced GPU modes enabled:
Note that the saturated green lamp is completely blacked out.
It looks like this if the GPU Mode is set to Basic:
The data is actually there, and when I sample the colors I find that the Red channel is clipped (zero).
That is a clue.  Sure enough, if I raise the black point of the red channel to 1 the problem is averted:
As it's a pretty obvious glitch I hadn't noticed until just now, this likely started occurring when I installed the new ATI driver yesterday morning, but I'm not sure.  It may be some kind of overflow or underflow in the GPU color-management processing, which is moved to the CPU in Basic mode.
I'm doing more investigation, including ultimately cleaning up and dropping back to the ATI Catalyst 12.8 release, but given this behavior I think I'd advise staying away from the Catalyst 12.11 Beta 4 driver for now.  Assuming this is a driver issue, 12.8 may still be the best in recent Catalyst releases.
I'll follow-up in this thread as I learn more.

The ATI/AMD forums are mostly populated with people wanting to play games. There are few mentions of Photoshop.
Yes, I browse over there from time to time, where I am considered a "peon".  I've seen evidence that a few games show corruption of a type that might be similar to what's shown here, but since it's the GPU programming by Adobe that's going wrong, which we must assume is  some kind of edge case that's not behaving as expected, it's hard to say how it might manifest in other programming.
Chances are good gamers shut their computers down when done playing, so the monitor power-down failure may not be seen by many, but again I have had confirmation from several folks that the failure is seen by others besides me.  By the way, to be very specific, the monitors DO power down at the prescribed time.  Then a little later they turn back on.

  • Problem with imported photos color/exposure

    Hello group,
Have been working on a video of our vacation and am having a strange problem importing photos. When I import the photo, it looks as it should. When I add the ken burns effect, once it renders the color seems washed out and the exposure looks lighter. If I import them without the KB effect they are fine. I am using three sets of photos from three different digital cameras, all doing the same thing. This is using the Aperture library. Any ideas? It almost is acting like I have some sort of global adjustment set, but I can't find any such thing. I have been using the edit pane/Video FX/Adjust colors/brightness and adjusting them back with that, but this is way too time consuming. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Oh I forgot to add, when I click on the photo settings in the timeline and it shows the preview pane, it looks correct then as well. I have also tried hitting the full screen play button and they show faded in that mode as well. Hope this makes sense!
    Thanks,
    John

    hey there Bastropguy,
i know this may sound wacky, but have you actually burned any of your projects to DVD & watched them on a TV from a set-top DVD player? many times what looks wrong or poor on your Mac looks fine once you burn to disc in iDVD. KB effect is a bit of a hog, using a lot of processing power to do its job so that's possibly the reason for the images looking poor on your Mac. p suggest you finish this project as a half & half for comparison & see how the images you've tweaked look vs. the untweaked.
    good luck.

  • Adobe reader, Ubuntu 12.04, problem with tab/font colors

I use Adobe Reader on Ubuntu Linux 12.04. The Reader was installed through Ubuntu repositories. The problem is that the background of inactive tabs has the same color as the text. Both the font and background use a dark grey color; see the attached image.
As you can see, the name of the file open in the inactive tab is not readable at all.  Can anybody help with this? Ideally, I would like to change the color of either tabs, or fonts, to make the tabs readable. If that matters, I use Gnome Classic (without effects) desktop environment.
