Problems with "corrupt" ipod when trying to sync

To elaborate on the title
Ever since downloading itune version 11 (and something) I've had a complete nightmare. Kept getting lots of technical warnings that I didn't understand. After reading lots of websites etc of people with same problem, I ended up having to do a system restore from an earlier backup. Unistalled all apple products and reinstalled version 10. Then had to reimport my whole library and spent days tidying this up.
I have now just come to re synch my ipod to add some more music and i tunes has deleted the whole contents and then failed to copy music to it. It now says that the hard disk on my i pod is corrupt and I have to restore the device. Everytime I try and do this, i tunes reports that same message and so won't do the restore.
On the settings on my ipod, although there is no music, videos etc it says that the disk is full and there is no spare space.
HELP!!!! I've now lost use of my favourite gadget that i use everyday and no idea what to do. I am extremelly angry with apple as it all seems to stem from an update that has been reported to be flawed. I am not computer literate and every error messgae just seems to lead to ten more - none of which I have any idea what they mean.

IPOD_Control/music/F20/WWJT.m4a
that's a corrupt music file on the ipod.
just doublechecking ... by restoring, did you mean you've used the procedure described in the following document?

ok, well my friend has an ipod mini, and recently it has corrupted. ive been lookin on the apple website as well as many others, and could not find it. i was hoping that some one could host it for me. please and thank you.

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Problems with iPhone freezing when trying to answer while on another call?

I am wondering if others are having the problem with your iPhone freezing when you are on a call and another calls comes in. I have had this problem repeatedly. If I try to answer a call while on another call, the other caller can not hear me. when I try and hang up the call...iPhone freezes and disconnects ALL calls.
I do not have a problem if I initiate BOTH calls for a conference call. I am hoping that Apple is aware of this issue and are working on a fix in the next update. Whenever that will be???
Oh well, if you are having this problem and know how to fix it...please let me know. Thanks

I have noticed that during or at the end of a conference call when one party hangs up all parties have always been disconnected. I can tell you that if this is the way it works normally, this is not the way is should work. This is a pain in the butt when it is necessary to call one of the parties back since that party is also trying to call you back. You both get a busy signal.
I do not have a problem answering a second call during a time when I am on a first call. It will place the first call on hold and I will only be talking to the second party. It should work that way. My iPhone works that way.
It should also allow you to add the second call to the first call through the 'merge' feature so that both the first and second calls can be joined together. My iPhone works that way.
My previous Treo worked great on these situations but I do have burps with the iPhone.
I think that the problem is with the iPhone and AT&T interface in these conditions.
I would provide your comments to Apple via:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html.

  • I reset my iPhone5 and I'm putting my ID and password in and it says there is a problem with the server when trying to restore all my information with iCloud backup. What do I do?

I was having several problems with my iPhone5, apps crashing everywhere, nothing working. My father who is very tech savvy told me we would have to restore the iPhone using the iCloud. So I went to settings, erased all my stuff and got the grey starting screen. I got up to the point where it says to enter your Apple ID and Password and I couldn't remember so I went on Apple.com and changed my info so I could remember it no matter what. I got the email saying that my info has been changed and accepted and all that but now when I put the information in its says that there is a problem connecitng to the server.
    Help!

  • Problem with Dreamweaver Crashing When Trying to Resolve Bad Image URLs

I have consistently had this problem ever since using Dreamweaver CS4 (3-4 years).  I constanly hand code HTML emails using Dreamweaver (about 100-150+ / yr), when I start a new email, becaue of the nature of the emails, I have to use absolute URLs for the images contained within said email.  Usually when I go to create a new email, I pick up an old one, to grab keep the same basic template and then do a find and replace to update the URLs for the images contained within the email.  The emails and image assets are kept on a web server and separated out with different directories, for example:  mysite.com/email1/ and mysite.com/email2/.  If I fail to upload all of the images from email1 into email2's directory or is I mistype the new URL Dreamweaver gets stuck when it tries to resolve the updated URLs and it can't find the images.  Quite frankly, I don't need dreamweaver to resolve the URLs for images, I don't use design view and probably never will, it automatically pulling the height and width attributes is conveinient but not neccessary.  Dreamweaver will stay hung up (completely unresponsive) indefinitely when this happens, and I usually have to kill the process via the Task Manager to even get it to shut down.  Then when I restart Dreamweaver it rebuilds the site cache which takes at least 5-10 minutes, I have a very large internal developement server.  This has caused me an absolute ton of frustration and lost time.  I was hoping someone could suggest a solution.
A couple of ideas I have kicking around as possible solutions but don't know how to do:
Killing the resolving of the absolute URLs (I can't find this in the Dreamweavers settings, I haven't checked the config files themselves though)
Disabling design and split view (last resort)
In case this helps my, system info:
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Intel Xeon W4530 @ 2.8 GHz
    12.0 GB of RAM
    Abobe CS4 Master Suite
    Thanks,
    Jason

Thank's for replying.  Since the first time I put in this answer, I've done a couple of tests to see what actually would go through the exporting process in iMovie and it turns out that I can export videos created using my webcam along with videos with slideshows.
The only problem is that with the slideshows (which is the type of video I'm attempting to export now), if I'm using all still images/pictures, I can only export videos no longer than about forty five seconds...anymore than that and iMovie crashes.
So my new question is...do you or anyone else know why this could be and how I could fix this problem?  Also, I'm not very tech savy and this is the first Mac I've ever owned so more details and instructions in the answers would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Problem with elementary streams when trying to export

I just purchased the MPEG2 plugin from the apple store because it said:
"The QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component provides QuickTime users with the ability to import and play back MPEG-2 content, including both multiplexed (a.k.a. muxed, where the audio and video tracks are interleaved together into one track) and non-multiplexed (a.k.a. elementary) streams. It is perfectly suited for professional and semi-professional content creators with projects such as:"
My movie is already encoded to m2v with a separate audio file. I wish to export to mpeg4 for internet distribution.
Now when I open the player, It does not give me the option of opening both audio and video components of my project.
How do I get the program to let me add both parts of the project to the player in preperation for export?

As you have discovered QT and that mpeg2 component have a number of llimitations when working with audio and video mpeg streamsl: QT Mpeg Limitations
Try using this freeware to deal with mpeg streams: Mpeg StreamClip. Since you already have the playback component the freeware should allow you to export to other formats like mp4 with both sound and video in the export.

  • Problem with ID parameter when trying to view survey responses

    Hi,
I am creating a survey tool for Sharepoint where the admin can initially put in a number and description for the project he wants the survey to be created for. Then the admin sends out the link to the survey for the questions to be filled in by a customer.
The link directs to a custom form I created in Sharepoint and it is composed of the link to the .aspx page and the ID of the individual survey. I created this link in SharePoint Designer:
    <a href=http://mysite/sitecollection/Lists/Survey/CustomEditForm.aspx?ID={$thisNode/@ID}></a>
Unfortunately this link only works for the admin account but not for other accounts I tested. I think it is because of the wrong parameter because ID is not a global variable and only works for the user who created the survey. Is there any other variable I
could use to send out the correct link?
I guess I am just looking for another (custom) parameter that can be passed to my custom form.
I've tried this but the solution did not work for me: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972225
Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hello,
    >every user is able to edit every response of any other user as well.
Yes, this is true. If user is having contributor rights then they would be able to edit other responses as well. You have to create custom event handler to stop this, where you can cancel the event if someone tries to edit other response.

  • Problem with imovie crashing when trying to import clips

I just purchased an imac, connected my video camera (panasonic hd camera) and opened imovie, it shows my two movie clips in the preview window within imovie and then crashes (says relaunch, quit or ignore). Any suggestions?
Should I just install the drivers that came with my video camera? I thought Imovie would just detect my camera (which it does) and then work properly without crashing the program). thanks for the help!

This worked for me with a Panasonic HDC-SD9:
Check Software Update under the Apple logo in the menu bar. If you see Quicktime 7.5 update, install it. After installation, go into Software Update again. If you see iMovie 7.1.2 update and iDVD 7.0.2 update, install them. Try downloading clips again. If it still does not work you will have to reformat the card which will destroy any clips. Good luck!

iOS uses more memory on the iPhone 5 than the iPhone 4 because there are quite a few more to iPhone 5. Therefore there will be less memory available on the 5. Reluctantly iOS 7, coming this fall, uses a bit less memory than iOS 6 so if you can do without a few apps until then you should be gravy!
