Problems with Default Encoding in Mail

I have been trying to change my default encoding settings in Apple Mail to Unicode-8. It has become necessary because some of the outlook clients that my colleagues use see my messages with control-characters/question marks. I know that this problem has been visited before and from the past posts I understand that closing the Mail and typing the following in the Terminal will do the trick:
defaults write com.apple.mail NSPreferredMailCharset "UTF-8"
I tried that several times and for some reason when I try to compose a new message, the encoding is set to "Automatic".
I would appreciate ANY help in this regard. I have been trying to get more information on this but my search has not yet been fruitful.
Thank you very much.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I do have the same problem as Steathford do, I tried
to add a dingbat without success (scissor), I still
have same "chinese signs everywhere",
I've never seen a case where the dingbat did not work. Could you send me an example? You need to go to your Sent folder, choose a message where you did this, and do Message > Send Again, and replace the original addressee with my email (tom at bluesky dot org).
When adding a dingbat, you must use the Character Palette as shown here, and not just change your font.

    Is it possible to change the default encoding for Mail?

    same problem with me. Sometime I can read Chinese/Japanese mails. Sometime the mails are unreadable. Why is Mail on mac be able to read all mails but mail on iTouch have encoding problems? I thought iTouch could be a better protable device system than windows CE in terms of international.

  • Problems with attached documents in Mail and Docs To Go

    Hello everybody.
    I've found a problem with attached documents in Mail. In fact, if I click on attached documents with .doc (microsoft office word 97-2004) and files in .docx Office Open .xml, the iPad doesn't open them, also if I click in "Open with Docs To Go (which should support these files' format)".
    How can I do? There's an application or another way to open these files?

  • Issues with Japanese encoding using Mail

    Since recently (I would say since I updated to 10.6), I have an issue with Japanese-encoded (ISO 2022-JP) mails on my English MacOS.
    I have no problem to read, edit and write answers to any mails.
    However with some ISO JP-2022-JP encoded messages (sent with Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 (Windows/20090812) btw) I have the following misbehaviour:
    - if I send the message and let the encoding to "automatic", Mail sends the mail in UTF-8, which I do not want since most of Japanese computer do not understand UTF-8 by default (and the receiver gets panicked: "I can not read your mail T_T !")
    - if I set the encoding to "ISO JP-2022-JP", I can not send nor save the message (see [1] at the end of the post). One should note that the error message when saving is really misleading (and yes my hard-drive has a lot of space left) and it should be fixed by Apple.
    - if I dig a bit deeper, I can in effect find some characters in the original message which prevent Mail to send my mail. It however does not make any sense since:
    - those char were in the original message properly encoded in ISO JP-2022-JP
    - those char are always very common ones
    The only solution I have found so far is to delete the original message in my mail, which is very frustrating...
    A sample of such mail can be found at (I removed personal info. and the mail is about a drinking party):
    - http://files.me.com/trouve.antoine/73w3w9
    Help would be very appreciated.
    Thank you very much.

    You can find out about the different versions here, for example:

    Thank you. I feel a bit stupid for not having looked in Wikipedia at first...
    I sometime wonder how could such basic problem like charset not being solved after more than 40 years of computer science...
    Here is a note that addresses that problem, but I don't think it works with 10.6. Might be worth a > try:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121808&tstart=60
    Thank for the link.
    It seems to still work: new japanese mails are now sent in "ISO 2022-JP-2".
    However, for messages with the header explicitly specifying "ISO 2022-JP" (which should be "ISO 2022-JP-2" on my mac) it has no influence.
    The only ways I see to solve this issue would be:
    i) to force "ISO 2022-JP-2" for all mails (a bit too extreme)
    ii) to force the use of "ISO 2022-JP-2" instead of "ISO 2022-JP", but I do not think such precise configuration is possible
    This mess appears to be due to Thunderbird which seems to mix "ISO 2022-JP-2" and "ISO 2022-JP", but I do not have any working Thunderbird to test now...

    Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Problem with Cyrillic fonts in Mail

    I have a problem with Mail mangling Cyrillic fonts. It happens like this:
    1. I create a new mail. I set my input locale to Bulgarian - Phonetic.
    2. I type out the email and send it to someone (afraid I don't know their config).
    3. The other person replies - doesn't seem to matter whether it's in English or Cyrillic. Their reply appears perfectly, and also my quoted original text from 1 is fine in their reply when looking at it in my Inbox.
    4. I then reply to their reply in Cyrillic as per step 1 above, except by pressing reply, rather than New Mail.
    What happens then is as follows:
    a - the recipient receives my email and reads the Cyrillic content just fine
    b - the email that appears in my Sent folder has all Cyrillic content in the message from steps 1-4 above mangled. The mangling moves Cyrillic letters about - i.e. all characters are in cyrillic and the same original characters always map to the same character, they're just wrong. e.g. Дени gets mapped to дЕОЙ. Стефан maps to уФЕЖБО.
    This is a bit annoying - as I have no record of the sent mail, and you're never quite sure whether the mangling is just in the sent folder or whether the recipient is also getting the mangled text.
    Any thoughts? I haven't been able to find anyone with a similar problem on these forums.
    Thanks in advance,
    Stephan
    *My configuration*
    I'm running Leopard 10.5.6 on a PowerBook.
    My Mail version is Version 3.5 (930.3)
    Mail is configured to use:
    Lucida Grande 11 for Mailbox Font
    Lucide Grande 12 for Message List Font
    Helvetica 12 for Message Font
    My mac has the following input locales installed:
    British
    Bulgarian (phonetic)

    It might be helpful to add that in Mail->Preferences->Composing the setting is Plain Text.
    And also that if I reply to myself all day long, this problem doesn't occur - its only when replying to someone else.

  • Problem with file.encoding in Linux

    Hello,
    I am currently migrating a java project from Windows to Linux. The project is finally shaping up now, except for some encoding problems.
    All configuration files are saved in ISO-8859-1/Cp1252 format. When reading and displaying these files in Swing (e.g. JTextArea), the special characters are displayed wrong. I have tried to start the VM with -Dfile.encoding=ISO-8859-1 and -Dfile.encoding=Cp1252 without success (this is done in Eclipse under Linux).
    I then tried the opposite. I created some UTF-8 files, started the application under Windows/Eclipse, read the files and displayed them in a JTextArea. Garbage characters were shown instead of (as expected). I then used -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8, and voila, all characters were displayed correctly.
    Why does not -Dfile.encoding work for ISO-8859-1/Linux but -Dfile.encoding work for UTF-8/Windows? Anyone here know?
    The JRE I have been using is 1.4.2_06.
    The Linux is a SuSE 10.0

  • Problem with attaching files to mail message

    Hello,
    I have problem with my mail app. I'm using spaces for better organization. When I wanna add some file to mail message I usually go to different desktop (space), where I have the file I wanna attach. I grab it move to right up corner to activate spaces, than move to desktop (space) with mail.app and press spacebar (it activates the desktop immediately). At that time it also start random app, which is in my dock.
    You can see it in my youtube video.
    How can avoid this strange thing happen?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUypUnPHZvc
    I'm using MacBook Pro 15'', Snow Leopard - latest updates. I've reinstalled my mac two days ago, so no garbage should be in.

    Thanks for quick reply.
    I don't have selected "always..." so I also tried it with selected "always...".
    Now I discovered that it has nothing to do with the mail. I've tried just move some file from one of spaces (desktop) to another using the spacebar for faster switching and it did the same. It opens random app from Dock.
    So now this topic is in wrong discussion. I will post it to correct discussion...

  • Problem with RPC/encoded WSDL

    I'm having trouble calling a web service that is based on an RPC-encoded WSDL. I've already made slight changes to the WSDL, so that I get a work-able message type for mapping purposes. These changes are based on <a href="http://www.ws-i.org/Profiles/BasicProfile-1.0-2004-04-16.html#refinement16556272"><b>soapenc:Array</b> recommendations in WSDL 1.1 Section 2.2</a> for declaration of array types.
    Here's a snippet of the WSDL:
    <wsdl:definitions ...>
      <wsdl:types>
        <schema ...>
          <complexType name="ArrayOf_tns1_ServiceOption">
            <complexContent>
              <restriction base="soapenc:Array">
                <attribute ref="soapenc:arrayType"
                  wsdl:arrayType="tns1:ServiceOption[]"
                  xmlns:wsdl="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/"/>
              </restriction>
            </complexContent>
          </complexType>
        </schema>
        <schema ...>
          <complexType name="ServiceOption">
            <sequence>
              <element name="key" nillable="true"
                        type="xsd:string"/>
              <element name="value" nillable="true"
                        type="xsd:string"/>
            </sequence>
          </complexType>
        </schema>
      </wsdl:types>
    </wsdl:definitions>
    I've changed it to:
    <wsdl:definitions ...>
      <wsdl:types>
        <schema ...>
          <complexType name="ArrayOf_tns1_ServiceOption">
            <sequence>
              <element name="ServiceOption"
                        type="tns1:ServiceOption"
                        minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded"/>
            </sequence>
          </complexType>
        </schema>
        </schema>
        <schema ...>
          <complexType name="ServiceOption">
            <sequence>
              <element name="key" nillable="true"
                        type="xsd:string"/>
              <element name="value" nillable="true"
                        type="xsd:string"/>
            </sequence>
          </complexType>
        </schema>
      </wsdl:types>
    </wsdl:definitions>
    The above changes have allowed me to make message mappings. But the I still get an error when sending a request to the web service. It seems that it requires the <b>xsi:type</b> and <b>soapenc:arrayType</b> attributes for arrays.
    <b>How can I create these attributes? How does XI handle RPC-encoded WSDLs?</b> I haven't encountered these problems with document-literal WSDLs.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Lorenzo,
    the extended support of rpc-style does <b>not</b> include the support of soapenc:array. It just addresses the root of the message and its direct children (as discussed in the thread where I added this hint).
    In the documentation of External Definitions you can find a hint where to find a list of supported XSD/DTD/WSDL-features. However, also there you will find no hint on the fact that soapenc:array is not supported. The reason for this is, that soapenc:array is specified in none of these standards. It is some artifact that SOAP smuggled into XSD. For good reasons WS-I prohibits the use of this artifact.
    Hence, if you need support for argumentation I can only point out the WS-I document I already linked.
    Greetings

  • Table editor problem with default value for column

    Hi there,
    I'm trying to use SQL Developer 1.2.1 on Ubuntu 7.10 (though I don't think the OS is relevant) and I'm running into a snag when trying to update table structures. If you go to edit the table to say modify a column name, and that column has a default value set, SQL Developer is encapsulating the value with brackets and quotes. When trying to save the changes, it complains about the default value being 4 chars too many for the column width. An example of this would be a currency code column of varchar2 (3) set with EUR as the default. SQL Developer changes the value to ('EUR') hence the error.
    Is there anyway to prevent this from happening?
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Could you please be more specific? In 1.2.1.32.40 I
    added the column COL1 VARCHAR2(3) with default value
    'EUR'. The data display field refreshed to show the
    default value, so I edited it in a couple of entries
    and comitted the change without problem. Then I
    renamed the column from the "Edit table" popup menu.
    Finally, I renamed the column from the "Rename
    column" popup menu, no problem either.Ah, you are correct. That does work. What I was trying is select tablename in the object browser, then right click on it and select "Edit" from the contextual menu. You are then presented with edit table dialog box. If you then select a column in that box you will see a column properties box. In that section you can change the name, default value, datatype et cetera. Note that your default column value which should just be EUR (or 'EUR' to denote that it's a string) is now ('EUR'). Once you try changing the name to of the column to something else and then click OK, you should then get an error complaining of "Invalid varchar2 default value" with a more specific message of "Default values size 7 is greater than the allowed 3"
    You have provided a work around, and thanks for that, but it would be nice to edit everything in the Edit table dialog box if you're modifying more than one column name. I'm tasked with cleaning up a bit of a messy database, and there are a good deal of columns to be renamed.
    Cheers,
    Chris

  • Problem with an account of Mail

    I had, with Leopard, a Mail account that did not want to work and, after the installation of Lion, I tried to repair it.
    The first thing that I did was to remove completely from Mail that account. Than I started by loading, from Mail Preferences, my Name, the Mail Address, the Pop, the SMTP and all other data, but the account did not wanted to work nor receiving nor transmitting. During the registration of the necessary data Mail notified me that, if I wanted to continue, I had to proceed Manually. At the end of registration it appeared on the right side of the "Sent" icon a triangle with an exclamation point inside. I repeated more times the account registration operation, all with negative results. I have also removed from User/Library/Preferences the file "apple.com.mail.plist" and some files in the "Mail" folder of User/Library and repeated again the registration process: always without success. At that time, to check the validity of the account parameters that I utilized, I registered the same account in Windows XP of the same iMac, and it worked immediately, both receiving and sending mails. That means that the utilized parameters are correct.
    It seems that, in some place in OSX 10.7.1 of my iMac some wrong data, loaded when the operating system was Leopard, remain in some file that I'm not able to find and to remove.
    Any ideas on how to fix the problem?
    Notice that on the same computer (in Mac side) I have other two Mail Accounts that work perfectly.

    Roberto

  • Problems with H264 encoding -- corrupted files...

    In Media Encoder CS5 I tried to export my Premiere Pro CS5 sequence with H264 encoding(30 fps, progressive, CBR 6 mbps, 640 x 480). Audio(AAC,  48 kHz, 256 kbps). It have made a corrupt video file(with 2 GB size, and it should be ~3,5 GB). I tried to re-export with these settings, and now the size was 1045 MB. Again corrupted file, it cannot be played... The Media Encoder says that there is no errors, the rendering was successful. After several other tries with different settings, I cannot render my movie.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for help!
    Daninet

    Hello all,
    This is an old thread, but it's an old problem that I'm concerned may still be continuing.
    We're moving from 3.2 to 4.1. While copying our applications from 3.2 to a test 4.1 installation, we did a static file export for "All static files" from 3.2 and did an import to 4.1. We're seeing the same behavior that I and others have reported in the past - any static files that are javascript are corrupted when "all static files" was chosen. Exporting/importing each javascript static file individually appears to work fine.
    If the bug was in 3.2 in that it was generating a corrupted export file when "all static files" is chosen, then I'm not concerned - we're moving from 3.2 anyway. But, if the issue is in the import then it must still exist in 4.1 and that would be a concern.
    Does anyone know if this was a recognized bug in 3.2 and has since been corrected?
    Thanks!
    John

  • Problems with JPEG encoding

    I'm making photo album on the web. But I have a problem with thumbnails generation. I have read alot about it on this forum (thanks guys) but I have a problem:
    Sometimes (but not every time) and independent on the image I've got thumbnail picture that can not be readed neither by IE or Photoshop or another programm. I'm using next encoding sequence:
    PEGImageEncoder encoder = JPEGCodec.createJPEGEncoder(out);
    com.sun.image.codec.jpeg.JPEGEncodeParam param = encoder.getDefaultJPEGEncodeParam(bufferedImage);
    writeParam.setCompressionMode(JPEGImageWriteParam.MODE_EXPLICIT);
    param.setQuality(0.7f, true);
    encoder.setJPEGEncodeParam(param);
    encoder.encode(bufferedImage);
    And this code operate in the Servlet enviroment. So, I can not understand what is wrong?
    Renat.

    Hi Renat.
    I may be wrong but I have observed some troubles with JPEG encoding (particularly because of a lack of CPU)... You may have the same trouble... The problem is that I don't how to catch these errors but if someone knows how to, I would be really interested in... I can only catch them when I decode these images thanks to TruncatedFileException and ImageFormatException.
