Problems with DefaultTableModel

Hi everyone...
I m trying to use DefaultTable model to present data from my database, but i cannot get it to work or better said show any data what so ever...
this is the sample of my code...
//just a snippet of my code...just the part where i have problems with
JTable dataTable=new JTable();
        DefaultTableModel tableModel=new DefaultTableModel();
        tableModel.setColumnIdentifiers(amarnaTableNames);
        try{
            CallableStatement calling=myConnectionClass.returnConnection().prepareCall(selectQuery);
            ResultSet result=calling.executeQuery();
            ResultSetMetaData metaResult=result.getMetaData();
            Object[] myData;
            while(result.next()){
                myData=new Object[columnNumber];
                for(int i=0;i<amarnaTableNames.length;i++){
                    amarnaData=result.getObject(i+1);
System.out.print(amarnaData[i]);//just to see if i get anything from my database...and i do
tableModel.addRow(amarnaData);
catch(SQLException ex){
dataTable.setModel(tableModel);//but when i try to show ma JTable...i cannot get nothing though i know i get the neccessary data from my database
So basically what i would like, if someone can please help me, is if there is any good tutorials or at least a simple example on how to use DefaultTableModel...
Thnx everyone

or at least a simple example on how to use DefaultTableModel..Here is my simple example:
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=57&threadID=577919
And here is another example of building the TableModel from a ResultSet:
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=57&threadID=597666
How do you know the problem is with the TableModel. Do you add the table to the GUI? Maybe you define the table twice, once when you add it to the GUI and once in the code you just posted.
If you need further help then you need to create a [url http://homepage1.nifty.com/algafield/sscce.html]Short, Self Contained, Compilable and Executable, Example Program (SSCCE) that demonstrates the incorrect behaviour, because I can't guess exactly what you are doing based on the information provided.
And don't forget to use the [url http://forum.java.sun.com/help.jspa?sec=formatting]Code Formatting Tags so the code retains its original formatting.

  • Problem with writing and reading using serialization

    I am having a problem with writing and reading an object that has another object in it. The purpose of the class is to write a order that has multiple items in it. And there will be several orders. This is for an IB project, where one of the requirements is to utilize a hierarchical composite data structure. That is, it is "one that contains more than one element and at least one of the elements is a composite data structure. Examples are, an array or linked list of records, a record that has one field that is another record, or an array". The code is shown below:

  • Problem with fireTableDataChanged in JTable

    Hi everybody,
    i have a really frustrating problem with Jtable. I created a class to display the jtable and a class that extends AbstactTableModel to use as its model. I can update my table after a fireTableDataChanged method in the class that extend the AbstractTableModel, but after implementing a ListSelectionListener to the class that displays the jtable, it gives a big bunch of errors in the console of my ide, when i remove it, it went back to normal without any errors.
    Anyways, my program still can run without problem and the table still can refresh, just this bunch of errors when i clicked the button that calls the AbstactTableModel to perform a firetabledatachanged
    anybody got this problem? how did you guys solve it?

    just this bunch of errors when i clicked the button that calls the AbstactTableModel to perform a firetabledatachangedWell, you should never have a button that invokes fireTableDataChanged.
    The TableModel should be responsible for invoking those methods.
    I suggest you look at the code for the DefaultTableModel for the proper way to write a TableModel. Basically you create methods to update the model. The model in turn fires the events to notify the view to repaint itself.

  • Problem with JComboBox in aTable Cell

  • Problem with adding a new row in JTable

    Hi,
    I've created a JTable using DefaultTableModel with DefaultTableModel(Object[][] obj,Object[] col) constructor.I've written actionListener for a JButton which should add new row to the tablemodel.Now, the listener adds the row to the model.But its throwing an ArrayOutofBoundsException and the added row is not visible unless I click on any column of the table.
    Kindly help me to resolve this problem

  • Scrollbar problem with JTable.

    Hi,
    I have 45 columns in a JTable. Please remember this is customize, we can change the number of columns dynamically, at max they can be 2 columns.
    i was having a problem with display the columns names in my Frame. I posted at http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5167358&messageID=9641265#9641265
    I got the solution. Thanks for that.
    But as i said these columns are customized.
    when i am having 2 columns in my JTable, table.setAutoResizeMode( JTable.AUTO_RESIZE_OFF ); is behaving differently, it's not occupying the complete JFrame. Lots of space is left out beside these 2 columns.
    When i comment this line, then those 2 columns are occupying my complete Frame.
    these two colmns should occupy my complete Frame and if i select 45 columns i should get scroll bar at botton with complete column NAMES.
    Hope i am clear.

    i mean, this snippet is sufficient.

  • Problem with TableCellRenderer

    Hi all, I need to put a JLabel within an ImageIcon in third column of a JTable,
    so i implement the TableCellRenderer , i test the code, but only text show, third column's JLabel doesn't show, it shows :
    javax.swing.JLabel[,0,0,0x0,invalid,alignmentX=0.0,alignmentY=null,border=,flags=0,maximumSize=,minimumSize=,preferredSize=,defaultIcon=javax.swing.ImageIcon@107f45d,disabledIcon=,horizontalAlignment=LEADING,horizontalTextPosition=TRAILING,iconTextGap=4,labelFor=,text=,verticalAlignment=CENTER,verticalTextPosition=CENTER]
    here is part of code:
    QueryTable.getColumnModel().getColumn(2).setCellRenderer(new LabelTableRenderer());
    Object[] k = { ser.getTheAccount(), ser.getTheDate(), ss};
    qtm.addRow(k); //qtm is a DefaultTableModel instance
    class LabelTableRenderer extends JLabel implements TableCellRenderer {

    setOpaque(true);
    public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable table,

    hi thanx for your help, i already refer that thread, but it doesn't work for me .:(
    all i want to do is put a JLabel within ImageIcon or only an ImageIcon in a column of JTable
    third column should display ImageIcon, but still show junk strings, hope someone can help me.
    i post my code here,
    String[] columns = {

    Object[][] data = {
    ser.getTheAccount(), ser.getTheDate(), ser.getTheImage()} //String,String,ImageIcon
    DefaultTableModel dt = new DefaultTableModel(data, columns);
    QueryTable = new JTable(dt) {
    public Class getColumnClass(int column) {
    System.out.println("col:" + column + " " +

    QueryTable.setBorder(BorderFactory.createEtchedBorder());
    QueryTable.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(300, 100));
    QueryTable.getTableHeader().setReorderingAllowed(false);
    QueryTable.setRowHeight(100);
    dt = new DefaultTableModel();
    dt.setDataVector(data, columns);
    i don't know where's the problem, please help me, thanx in andvance.

  • Problems with JTable Renderer

    I have a problem with applying a custom renderer. I know the renderer works so thats not the problem. If I do like this:
    DefaultTableModel aDefaultTableModel = new DefaultTableModel(data, columnNames);
    it works. But if I do like this:
    DefaultTableModel aDefaultTableModel;
    aDefaultTableModel.setDataVector(data, columNames);
    is doesn't, why?

    I think maybe it's not the renderer at all. It may be my custom TableModel thats causing problems. Now this doesn't work:
    private JTable aTable;
    private CustomTableModel aTableModel;
    public MyProgram() {
    aTableModel = new CustomTableModel();
    aTable = new JTable(aTableModel);
    aTableModel.setData(data, columnNames);
    private class CustomTableModel {
    private String[] columnNames = null;
    private Object[][] data = null;
    public CustomTableModel() {
    columnNames = new String[0];
    data = new Object[0][0];
    ... snip
    public void setData(Object[][] data, String[] columnNames) {
    this.data = data;
    this.columnNames = columnNames;
    fireTableDataChanged();
    ... snip
    Now, why doesn't that setData method work??

  • JTable with DefaultTableModel not showing?

    I hope this is SSCE...
    I'm using a defaultTableModel, but I cannot get the Table to show.
    When I just simply put the vectors straight into the table, without using the DefaultTableModel it worked.
    This is the code I have now, the table doesn't show at all?
    I actually couldn't get this example to compile, as it only contains snippets of the code. The real code compiles and runs, but the table just doesn't show. I guess it's all part of the same problem.
    If someone could help me with where I've gone wrong in the usage of the DefaultTableModel, it would be greatly appreciated.
    import java.util.Vector;
    import javax.swing.event.TableModelEvent;
    import javax.swing.event.TableModelListener;
    import javax.swing.table.TableModel;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.table.DefaultTableModel;
    import javax.swing.event.*;
    public class FutureTable extends JTable implements TableModelListener {
         Vector colnames = new Vector();
         Vector inne = new Vector();
         TableModel model;
         JTable table = new JTable();
         public FutureTable(){
              //vector colnames
              colnames.addElement("Date");
              //vector inne
              inne.addElement("example")
              //Adds inne and colnames to the TableModel model
              model = new DefaultTableModel(inne, colnames);
              //sets Table to TableModel model
              table.setModel(model);
              //adds a listener to the table
              table.getModel().addTableModelListener(this);
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.util.Vector;
    public class FutureTableHolder extends JPanel {
         Vector inne = new Vector();
         JScrollPane scrollPane;
         FutureTable theTable = new FutureTable();
         public FutureTableHolder() {
              //Sets the layout to gridlayout so that the table will fill the panel.
              setLayout(new GridLayout(1,0));
              scrollPane= new JScrollPane(theTable);//ScrollPane
              add(scrollPane);
         }//Ends FutureTableHolder()

    When I just simply put the vectors straight into the table, without using the DefaultTableModel it worked. Well, the code is the same.
    You can use:
    JTable table = new JTable(data, columnNames);or
    DefaultTableModel model = new DefaultTableModel(data, columnNames);
    JTable table = new JTable( model );So you obviously have a problem with your code and you are not building the Vectors the same way. Since you did not post a SSCCE, we can't help (Although as noted above your data Vector is empty so there is no data to display).

  • Problem with comboBox editor

    Hi experts,
    i am keeping a combobox renderer and editor in my JTable for 2 columns say 5th column and 7th column.
    In renderer no Problem.
    But while i am editing ,whenever i am choosing a perticular item from the drop down in the first row of table,it is affecting the remaining set of rows.,not all the rows also.
    for example,next 5 rows are getting the same selected value.
    next some 2 rows are getting affected.
    the below 2 class are my renderer and editor.public class ComboBoxRenderer extends JComboBox implements TableCellRenderer {
            public ComboBoxRenderer(String[] items) {
                            super(items);
            public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable table, Object value, boolean isSelected, boolean hasFocus, int row, int column) {

                    // Select the current value
                    setSelectedItem(value);
                    return this;
    }My ComboBox editor is public class ComboBoxEditor extends DefaultCellEditor {
            public ComboBoxEditor(String[] items) {
                   super(new JComboBox(items));
    }so i am using this render and editor in my swing screen by the following codeString strSP[] = {"P", "O", "H", " "};
    column5.setCellEditor(new ComboBoxEditor(strSP));
    column5.setCellRenderer(new ComboBoxRenderer(strSP));I am sure like the problem with my renderer and editoronly,but i am helpless.
    Please if someone help me to come out of this problem,it will be much helpful for me .
    thanks

    Hi,
    Thanks for u'r reply
    I tried in so many ways.
    I tried with u'r editor,and sun forum examples also.
    I brief what i want.
    I am having table with 3 column.
    The zeroth col, and the 2 col is a combo box.so i am rendering.
    when i choose a one from zeroth col combo Box ,the 2nd col ComboBox value has to change into YES
    when i choose a apart from one from zeroth col combo Box ,the 2nd col combo Box value has to change into NO.
    Here my Problem is
    When ever i am choosing the particular value from the 1st combo box,it is affecting the all the combobox values below(set of values,not all)..To solve that i kept the commented line in the renderer but it is creating the new problem.
    I am very seriously working to solve this problem,if any one suggest to solve this,it will be very much helpful to me.

  • A problem with threads

    I am trying to implement some kind of a server listening for requests. The listener part of the app, is a daemon thread that listens for connections and instantiates a handling daemon thread once it gets some. However, my problem is that i must be able to kill the listening thread at the user's will (say via a sto button). I have done this via the Sun's proposed way, by testing a boolean flag in the loop, which is set to false when i wish to kill the thread. The problem with this thing is the following...
    Once the thread starts excecuting, it will test the flag, find it true and enter the loop. At some point it will LOCK on the server socket waiting for connection. Unless some client actually connects, it will keep on listening indefinatelly whithought ever bothering to check for the flag again (no matter how many times you set the damn thing to false).
    My question is this: Is there any real, non-theoretical, applied way to stop thread in java safely?
    Thank you in advance,
    Lefty

    This was one solution from the socket programming forum, have you tried this??
    public Thread MyThread extends Thread{
         boolean active = true;
         public void run(){
              ss.setSoTimeout(90);
              while (active){
                   try{
                        serverSocket = ss.accept();
                   catch (SocketTimeoutException ste){
                   // do nothing
         // interrupt thread
         public void deactivate(){
              active = false;
              // you gotta sleep for a time longer than the
              // accept() timeout to make sure that timeout is finished.
              try{
                   sleep(91);
              }catch (InterruptedException ie){
              interrupt();
    }

  • Problem with Threads and a static variable

    I have a problem with the code below. I am yet to make sure that I understand the problem. Correct me if I am wrong please.
    Code functionality:
    A timer calls SetState every second. It sets the state and sets boolean variable "changed" to true. Then notifies a main process thread to check if the state changed to send a message.
    The problem as far I understand is:
    Assume the timer Thread calls SetState twice before the main process Thread runs. As a result, "changed" is set to true twice. However, since the main process is blocked twice during the two calls to SetState, when it runs it would have the two SetState timer threads blocked on its synchronized body. It will pass the first one, send the message and set "changed" to false since it was true. Now, it will pass the second thread, but here is the problem, "changed" is already set to false. As a result, it won't send the message even though it is supposed to.
    Would you please let me know if my understanding is correct? If so, what would you propose to resolve the problem? Should I call wait some other or should I notify in a different way?
    Thanks,
    B.D.
    Code:
    private static volatile boolean bChanged = false;
    private static Thread objMainProcess;
       protected static void Init(){
            objMainProcess = new Thread() {
                public void run() {
                    while( objMainProcess == Thread.currentThread() ) {
                       GetState();
            objMainProcess.setDaemon( true );
            objMainProcess.start();
        public static void initStatusTimer(){
            if(objTimer == null)
                 objTimer = new javax.swing.Timer( 1000, new java.awt.event.ActionListener(){
                    public void actionPerformed( java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt){
                              SetState();
        private static void SetState(){
            if( objMainProcess == null ) return;
            synchronized( objMainProcess ) {
                bChanged = true;
                try{
                    objMainProcess.notify();
                }catch( IllegalMonitorStateException e ) {}
        private static boolean GetState() {
            if( objMainProcess == null ) return false;
            synchronized( objMainProcess ) {
                if( bChanged) {
                    SendMessage();
                    bChanged = false;
                    return true;
                try {
                    objMainProcess.wait();
                }catch( InterruptedException e ) {}
                return false;
        }

    Thanks DrClap for your reply. Everything you said is right. It is not easy to make them alternate since SetState() could be called from different places where the state could be anything else but a status message. Like a GREETING message for example. It is a handshaking message but not a status message.
    Again as you said, There is a reason I can't call sendMessage() inside setState().
    The only way I was able to do it is by having a counter of the number of notifies that have been called. Every time notify() is called a counter is incremented. Now instead of just checking if "changed" flag is true, I also check if notify counter is greater than zero. If both true, I send the message. If "changed" flag is false, I check again if the notify counter is greater than zero, I send the message. This way it works, but it is kind of a patch than a good design fix. I am yet to find a good solution.
    Thanks,
    B.D.

  • Problem with threads running javaw

    Hi,
    Having a problem with multi thread programming using client server sockets. The program works find when starting the the application in a console using java muti.java , but when using javaw multi.java the program doesnt die and have to kill it in the task manager. The program doesnt display any of my gui error messages either when the server disconnect the client. all works find in a console. any advice on this as I havent been able to understand why this is happening? any comment would be appreciated.
    troy.

    troy,
    Try and post a minimum code sample of your app which
    does not work.
    When using javaw, make sure you redirect the standard
    error and standard output streams to file.
    Graeme.Hi Graeme,
    I dont understand what you mean by redirection to file? some of my code below.
    The code works fine under a console, code is supposed to exit when the client (the other server )disconnects. the problem is that but the clientworker side of the code still works. which under console it doesnt.

  • Problem with threads and camera.

    Hi everybody!
    I've a problem with taking snapshot.
    I would like to display a loading screen after it take snapshot ( sometimes i
    have to wait few seconds after i took snapshot. Propably photo is being taken in time where i have to wait).
    I was trying to use threads but i didn't succeed.
    I made this code:
    display.setCurrent(perform);
            new Thread(new Runnable(){
                public void run() {
                    while((!performing.isShown()) && (backgroundCamera.isShown())){
                        Thread.yield();
                    notifyAll();
            }).start();
            new Thread(new Runnable(){
                public void run() {
                    try {
                        this.wait();
                    } catch(Exception e) {
                        exceptionHandler(e);
                    photo = camera.snapshot();
                    display.setCurrent(displayPhoto);
            }).start();This code is sometimes showing performing screen but sometimes no.
    I don't know why. In my opinion performing.isShown() method isn't working correctly.
    Does anyone have some idea how to use threads here?

    Hi,
    I've finally managed to work this fine.
    The code:
           Object o = new Object();
           display.setCurrent(perform);
            new Thread(new Runnable(){
                public void run() {
                    while(!performing.isShown()){
                        Thread.yield();
                   synchronized(o) {
                      o.notify();
            }).start();
            new Thread(new Runnable(){
                public void run() {
                    try {
                        synchronized(o) {
                           o.wait(1);
                    } catch(Exception e) {
                        exceptionHandler(e);
                    photo = camera.snapshot();
                    display.setCurrent(displayPhoto);
            }).start();

  • Problem with threads hanging

    We have a problem where our application stops responding after a few days of usage. Things will for fine for a day or two, and then pretty quickly threads will start getting hung up, usually in places where they are allocating memory
    We are running WebLogic 8.1 SP2 on Sun JDK 1.4.2_04 on Solaris 8 using the alternate threading model and the -server hotspot vm. We are running pretty much the same code that we had no problems with under WebLogic 6.1 SP4 and Sun JDK 1.3.1.
    A thread dump usually shows that some or all of our execute threads are in the state "waiting for monitor entry" even though they are not currently waiting on any java locks. Here is a sample thread from the thread dump (we have ~120 threads so I don't want to post the full dump).

    String.java line 1446 for this jdk allocates a new String object, and all the other threads in this state also are creating new objects or arrays, etc.
    We've done a pstack on this process when it's in this state, and the threads that are in the "waiting for monitor entry" that look like they're allocating memory are all waiting on the same lwp_mutex_lock with some allocation method that's calling into the native TwoGenerationCollectorPolicy.mem_allocate_work (see pstack output below for the same thread as in the thread dump above)

    Also when it's having this problem, the "VM Thread" is always using a lot of processor time. We did a couple of pstacks today while it was having this problem, and this thread was stuck in the ONMethodSweeper.sweep for over 15 minutes when we finally killed the server.
    From the thread dump:
    "VM Thread" prio=5 tid=0x000e2d20 nid=0x2 runnable

    Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I'm trying to figure out if this is caused by something we're doing, or something relating to our environment and jvm options. Any ideas?

    Thanks for the reply - I'm testing our app with the +UseConcMarkSweepGC now in our test environment to make sure it doesn't cause any problems there.  Unfortunately the only place we've had this problem is on the production server, so it's extra difficult debugging this.
    We're using the following memory options:
    -ms512m -mx512m -XX:NewSize=128m -XX:PermSize=192m -XX:MaxNewSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=192m -XX:SurvivorRatio=8and the following debugging options, as we've also been seeing OutOfMemoryErrors ( see http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=37&thread=522354&tstart=45&trange=15 )
    -verbosegc -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintHeapAtGCBTW, which c++filt version and options are you using? Our Solaris boxes only seem to have the GNU version installed. I was trying to run that on some of the other stack traces and wasn't getting anywhere, and didn't know if because it was GNU version wouldn't work on something compiled with the Sun compiler.
    Thanks!
