Problems with deleted blank photos in library

A couple of weeks ago I took around 60 images, downloaded them from my camera within the programme as I have with the thousands of others I have previously done. Then I went through and deleted the weaker shots from the library, both raw and jpeg. After I had finished I went to the trash to delete and my computer froze and did not complete the function. When I restarted, all the photos I had deleted were blank white outlined squares in my library that take ages to scroll past and give me a rainbow waiting icon.
I have sinced tried multiple times to delete, but they always crash my iPhoto.
They were not categorised into an album yet, and I have backed up my photos! I have just had a couple of big shoots and have a whole bunch more photos to add to iPhoto but I am weary of doing so until these blank spaces are fixed! They slow down the scrolling of my library a hundred times over.
Everything else in the library is working well.
I can delete them from my library, but when I go to delete them from the trash, the system crashes and when I restart they are back in my library again!
Any ideas?? Would really appreciate knowledge on this subject. It has me stumped!

How about putting all the images (from the trash) back in the library. Then put one in the trash and see if you can empty it. If that doesn't work then the only option I can think of is to create anew library and import your images from the old library. Hopefully iPhoto will not import those ghost images in the trash.
Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "open" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
Good luck!

I hope this hasn't been addressed earlier. I checked as far back as I had patience.
I recently upgraded to a new Vista 64bit system. LR 64bit seems to "Not Respond" after I use the "delete rejected photos". Both instances the photos were deleted but LR Library siezed. On the first occaision I deleted around 40 photos the secont time was 300+ photos. Any ideas or information welcome.

  • Problem with corrupted iPhone photo albums

I have a problem with my iPhone "Photos" app.
When I open it is see hundreds of "ghost" albums in the Albums tab.
I have tried to turn off syncing photos in iTunes and then turn it back on again, and so deleting all albums and photos and then re-applying- but no luck.  I also tried to sync with an empty folder on my Mac instead of the iPhoto library, but this still does not delete the albums.
Anyone know how to nuke the photos on an iPhone and start from scratch WITHOUT having to restore the iPhone to its factory state?

Here is what I see when I go to delete some of the rogue albums:
I could keep doing this but there are probably 300-400 of them!!!!!

Put the folder into the trash - go to the Finder menu and hold down the alt key whilst selecting Empty Trash.
I've never tried this with a folder full of locked files, but it certainly works with a single locked file.

  • Syncing thumbnails in library with deletion of photos from disk?

After I delete some photos directly from the disk, iPhoto's thumbnails still remain the same. Only when I try to open an image do I get a black alert box, implying that the original file is missing.
Is there a way to automatically sync the library to only show thumbnails for photos that still actually exist?
    Thanks!

Well that's the bad news, I'm afraid.
If you try and access the iPhoto Library Folder with another application (especially one that runs on another OS) you risk damaging the iPhoto Library. If you attempt to manage the files - delete them, organise them, move them, rename then, in fact do anything to change the path to the files then you will damage the library.
You can share the files with another photo manager by using a referenced library.
Now the same rules apply, you can't move or rename or change the path to the files, but at east if you delete them via the Finder (or Picasa) it won't stop iPhoto from deleting it's part of the equation.
So, if you feel it's necessary to use both applications, recreate your library as a referenced Library.
(You're going to have to recreate your Library anyway, as the deletions have left it terminally confused.)
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You need to place the files in your filing system first, then import them to iPhoto. Deleting means that trashing the files in iPhoto removes them from iPhoto. You'll need to trash the Original images yourself. (Tip: Use the 'Show Original File' command to track down the Original, then trash the files from iPhoto and then the file from your filing system).
    2. You cannot move or rename the files or in any way change the path to the pics on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.

  • Problems with re-naming photo files

Hi there, could anyone please give me some advice on a problem I am having with re-naming photos?
I have scanned over 2000 photos onto my mac. I scanned a batch of a couple of hundred at a time, and as I went along I would copy each batch into iphoto and then trashed them off the hard-drive (with hindsight I'm not entirely sure why I did that!). I am now trying to back them all up on to an external hard drive and have run into problems. The file names they saved as are for example img001, because of the number of photos I scanned I have about five photos in iphoto all with the same file name, and when I drag them onto the hard drive to copy them I am of course getting the message pop up that says I already have a file of that name on the hard drive and do I want to replace it, which of course I don't.
So...... I went through all the photos and renamed them so they were all different. However, although they show with new titles, when I click on "Show Extended Photo Info" in the Photos menu, the file name shows as the original one it was scanned as. I have then tried right clicking the photo and going to "Show file", and have renamed the photo there. However it still shows the same file name back in the extended photo info, and when I try to copy it on to my hard drive I get an error message saying "The items on the Clipboard cannot be pasted to this location. One or more of the items may have been deleted or are no longer available".
This is driving me insane!!! Please can someone help me!?

several things most of which have to do with what iPhoto is and how it works
iPhoto is a database program and you must not every make any changes to the contents or structure of the database (the files) except using iPhoto - never via the finder or other programs
as a database you never use the internal structure but use the database tools to access the photos
The only way to backup up the database is to copy it intact as a single entity to a different drive - you can not back it up in pieces
To backup the photos or move them to a different machine you export them from the database (file menu ==> export) and one of the options at that time is to assign new file names
when I drag them onto the hard drive to copy them I am of course getting the message pop up that says I already have a file of that name on the hard drive
So now that you understand how iPhoto works you see that there is a simple solution to this - simply export the photos and use the rename option in the export to assign sequential names to them
I went through all the photos and renamed them so they were all different
If you did this by typing a new title below the photo then you simply export using the use title as file name option
I have then tried right clicking the photo and going to "Show file", and have renamed the photo there
This is using the finder to modify the contents of the iPhoto library and will corrupt your library and make it unusable - to use it you will have to restore it as it was - your backup is the easiest

  • Problem with Export Project as New Library

Getting some behavior from Aperture that I do not understand.
I am running Aperture 3.5.1 on OSX 10.9.1 on both a MacPro and a MacBookPro(Retina).
Both machines are believed to be completely up-to-date software-wise (no indication in App store that software updates are available.  i don't know how else to look.).
I imported (Nikon D800) raw images from an SD card to MacBookPro Aperture Library (which contains few images), performed adjustments (and "shared" some with my SmugMug account).
Then I selected the Project that contained my images, chose File, Export, Project as New Library (in order to move the adjusted images to my MacPro, where my "real" Aperture Library resides).  (first time i have attempted such a workflow).  I selected all 3 options (Copy originals . . ., Copy previews . . ., Show alert) and clicked Export Library.
I copied the resulting file to my MacPro.  After choosing File, Import, Library (in Aperture on the MacPro), I see it "Merging", and then the project in question appears in the Library on the MacPro.
The problem is that each image has a message at the top of the Adjustments pane:  "This photo was adjusted using an earlier version of Apple's RAW processing", and they all come into the receiving library with no adjustments, and no previews - not even the built-in preview that a raw file should carry (the images show in the viewer as _really_ flat, gray - very strange, i have never seen this appearance before, though I routeinely use raw format).
Trying to troubleshoot, I went back to the MacBookPro and closed Aperture, then double-clicked the Library on the desktop that had resulted from the export process (containing only one project).
Same situation.  All of the images think they were processed on older raw processor (even though this library is being opened on the same computer that did the processing).
Any ideas?  Is this a bug, or have I misunderstood the point of exporting Projects?

There have been two problems, reported, when exporting projects as library:
In earlier versions of Aperture the exported library did not include all images, if images had been imported from Photo Stream. I cannot reproduce this bug any longer with Aperture 3.5.1.
The export could go wrong, if the aperture library needed repairing.
Have you tried the Aperture Library First Aid Tools,to fix a possible library curruption?
See this link:  Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
Before trying to rebuild, make sure, your backup of your Aperture library is current and in a working condition.
I see a progress bar and the .exporting library is created in the desired location.
Finally I decided to watch a project closely as it was being exported as a library and I noticed that the file size jumps up an down. I'm not an expert on how export works, but it would appear that each exported photo is overwriting the previous one.
What is the desired location? Are you exporting to your internal system drive or to an external drive? If external, how is the drive formatted?  Such overwriting of files could be caused by incompatible filesystems creating conflicting pathnames. Make sure, the destination is a filesystem formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled).

  • Aperture2.0 and iweb08 - problems with size of photos

Just got a new Imac and Aperture2 and I have my first problem. Hopefully I can explain this without sounding confusing. I have 10 photos in album "A" in Aperture. The photos are 'web ready' .jpg at 500 pixels by 500 pixels and 72 dpi. When i make an album page in iweb08 and use the media window to bring in my 'aperture album' the photos come into iweb much smaller then there original size, maybe 200 pixels by 200 pixels - I cant resize the images or if I can, there way distorted.
    Here's the tricky part.
When I created an album in iphoto08 and placed the SAME photos in it and add it (using the media window, same step as above) into iweb - all the photos display correctly.
    So.
What could be the problem with aperture and iweb?? Thanks for any help.
and I have all the lastest updates including the new Aperture2.01
    Message was edited by: mezzo17

I tried that (switching the preview resolution from 1/2 to no limit) and it didn't work.
    but then
I deleted the entire project folder, with the albums etc. and decided to start from scratch.
With the settings (as you guys suggested) prior to creating my folders and projects
and just created the project folder again, created a new album folder and imported the images again.
and then it worked just fine.
I guess switching the preview quality while the folders 'existed' wasn't updating somewhere.
    Sounds buggy.
    Anyways. Its working now.
I haven't gotten the .mac side of my new web working yet but you can check out the old site

    Thanks for the help.

  • Problems with Editing my photos - using Elements 7

When I click on a photo to go to full edit, my computer freezes up and I end up having to close the program. It used to work just fine. My computer guy worked the memory of my computer, but it seems to be a problem with this program. Any ideas?

    Hi,
Please try couple of probable solutions as mentioned below:
    Solution 1:
    1. Close Elements.
    2. Launch the Photoshop Elements Welcome Screen and hold down ctrl + alt + shift as you click Editor.
    3. Continue to hold the keys until you see a message box asking if you want to delete Photoshop Elements settings file; click Yes. Elements will open with default preferences.
Solution 2: In case any network printer is attached try to launch without network or printer uninstall or make different printer as default.
Solution 3: Try launching with anti-virus off or removing PSE from conflicting list.
    Solution 4:
On the drive on which you have installed PSE,on my machine it is on C:
Go  to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements  7.0\Locales\<locale>\Plug-Ins\Import-Exportand you will find twain  plug-in. Remove that plug-in from that location and copy it somewhere  else.
Now launch PSE and check if it works.

the link above is where i downloaded the effects but im not sure how to uninstall them and it doesnt say on the website. When go find it in Finder it says More Ichat Effects Uninstaller and i pressed it but it brings up like Terminal ( i think its some application) and i dont know where to go from there and most of the other effects work but the dark ones dont. Also i tried turning flash off and it doesnt help.
    http://i45.tinypic.com/28twfns.jpg
    According to the developer's website:
      http://ismileys.free.fr/moreichateffects/support/
".... you can launch iChat and Photobooth in 32 bits only..."
If that does not help you, try uninstalling MoreIchatEffects. I do not use MoreIchatEffects, but, again, according to the developer's website,
      http://ismileys.free.fr/moreichateffects/
"If you want to remove all effects, run the installer or remove files in /Library/Compositions"
    (1) In addition to the extra effects, it appears that the MoreIchatEffects installer adds an uninstaller application that you say looks like Terminal. You should be able to run the MoreIchatEffects Uninstaller application by merely double-clicking its iCon and following any on-screen instructions.
If you need more help with how to run the Uninstaller than you can find from MoreIchatEffects> Help, you can contact the developer for assistance using the information from this page:
      http://ismileys.free.fr/contact.html
Based on the "... check the number of your effects. If it isn't a multiple of 8, it will crash always." comment on that page, you may also want to count the number of effects in your Mac's Library/Compositions folder to be sure that is not your problem. If you need help finding the effects files you are to count, see the next paragraph of this post.
    (2) If you cannot make the uninstaller work, note that the "Library/Compositions folder" that contains the effects files you can manually delete is the one in your Mac's startup drive Library/Preferences folder. Look in the "Compositions" folder there.
Do NOT remove any files from either the Library folder in your Mac's System folder
or from the Library folder in your ~ (Home) folder.
    (3) If you cannot make either method above work for you, you can use your Time Machine backup from a date prior to the time you installed MoreIchatEffects. For help, see:

  • Having a problem with eBooks in my iTunes library.

As the title says, I'm having some problems with the iTunes library not reflecting what's actually on the disk.
I add the ebook and it seems to add ok.  The file gets consolidated into /mymusic/books under the author correctly, but the book is missing from the library.  The book is in ePub format, and seems to have the right file extension and shows up as a file of "ePub" type in windows explorer.
Any ideas?  Is there a way to re-build the library or a portion of it?

  • Problem with some synced photos to my iphone rotating incorrectly

I recently synced a folder of photos in My Pictures to my iPhone 4 via iTunes.  68 picture...21 were taken in a portrait rotation, the rest were landscape.  I had no tropuble with the landscape photos.  But, after the sync, 5 of the 21 portrait photos had the wrong rotation.  From my basic troubleshoot...they are not all rotated incorrectly in the same direction and I confirmed that they all have a similar resolution as at least one of the correctly oriented portrait photos from the same sync.  Editing and saving the picture directly on the iPhone is not an option because I am only given the option to save an edited photo to the Camera Roll album.  It is extremely frustrating.  Why does this process ignore the native orientation of only some of the synced photos?  I'd be less confused if it mess up all of the portrait photos.  I would very much appreciate any advice to fix this seemingly arbitrary malfunction.  Thank you.

I'm having a problem where when I import my iPhone photos into Picasa, photos are rotated incorrectly (even when viewed in Finder). Landscape photos are upside down, portrait photos aren't rotated to portrait orientation. I suspect this has someting to do with the iPhone saving photos without rotating them based on iPhone orientation and instead adding EXIF data to indicate the orientation based on something I read online, but I don't really know. When viewing info for a portrait photo in Preview, it indicates Y resolution is less than X resolution (which is what it should be for landscape photos only), and on the TIFF tab says Orientation 1 (Normal).
So my question is, why is it not being rotated properly in the iPhone for use on other devices? How can I fix this?
It should be noted that important photos with iPhoto or Image Capture makes it display properly in Preview and Finder with updated Orientation information, but still not in Firefox (so... good for some software on your Mac but even still not if you intend to send the picture to anyone... MAJOR BUG ).
BTW using iPhone 4s with latest version of iOS 5.1.1, Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
    PS VIdeo orientation is perfect.
