Problems with downloading dmg.gz files with Firefox

I've noticed some problems where Firefox has problems trying to download dmg.gz files, and it will spit out a bunch of garbled "code" to the screen instead of downloading the file. I tried the same file, just as a dmg file, and Firefox downloaded it just fine. Any ideas on what is going wrong here? Is this some limitation with Firefox and not understanding dmg.gz files, or is the disk image not being created and compressed properly, or is this a matter on the server that would have to be fixed?
I haven't noticed this problem of trying to download dmg.gz files with other browsers like Safari or OmniWeb.

I don't know where the filename->filetype mapping is in Firefox, but I do know that the popup menu on links includes a "Save link as..." item. So command-click or hold down the mouse button for a while or right-click on one of the links that causes problems and select that item. That will give you a standard "save as" dialog box and you can save the file. This trick works for any link and any filetype.

  • Download/Open .pdf files with Windows 8.1 - Help needed urgently!

    Hi, all. I hope this is not a stupid question, but can someone please help with downloading/opening .pdf files?
    I am running Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, latest version (no updates available) on a Windows 8.1 platform. When I attempt to download a .pdf file (ANY .pdf file!), my system gives me this error message -
    "Adobe Acrobat does not support Internet Explorer's 64-bit mode. Either install the latest version of Adobe Reader, or disable 64-bit mode in Internet Explorer"
    I find this baffling. If I could find a later version of Reader than what I have, I would like to try it - but, Adobe updates tells me I have the latest version of Reader. Also, as above, I have the latest version of Acrobat - if Reader could support 64-bit, surely Acrobat XI Pro could?
    Can some kind person please help?

    Hi Peter,
    (I updated your title, so now help is indeed, "needed," and not "nedded." Been there myself plenty of times.)
    In any case, is it possible that you're running Reader X, and have the latest updates of that? If so, please consider downloading Reader XI, and make sure you're running version 11.0.07. And, this document offers instructions for setting up your browser to display PDFs when you're using Acrobat XI or Reader XI: Acrobat Help | Display PDF in browser | Acrobat, Reader XI
    Please let us know how it goes.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Finder crashed after downloading a zip file with pictures

    First my desktop icons disappeared. Then the finder, appears and disappears every 3 seconds. Simultaneously the Finder also disappears and reappers in the "Force Quit Application" window. This started after I downloaded a zip file with family photos from a friend (on a windows machine). Rebooted off the Tiger installation dick. Running disk utility off the Tiger installation disk did not help. Permissions were repaired but the finder is still crashing Tried relaunching the Finder from the "Force Quit Application" window. No help. Ran Virex (outdated by 12 months) without any benefit.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    There's a shameful glitch in Finder where if you drag certain attachments off a mail document onto the Desktop the Finder will do its quit/relaunch jitter bug--will also do it for illegally named files on the Desktop, and will hang for dang near forever it you accidently drop 100s of files onto the Desktop. The easy solution is to start the affected machine in target disk mode, hook it up by firewire to another Mac, then navigate to the affected user's Desktop folder and move the funky file or files into a new folder.

  • Problem on downloading a zip file

    I am having a problem on downloading a zip file(file size is about 2Mb). Sometimes I can get a complete file and can open the file, sometimes the zip file is chunked(the file size is smaller than the right one), so I can't open it.
    The file content is stored in a blob field. The code first goes to database get the blob as inputstream, then copy the inputstream into response.getOutputStream().
    The problem is unpredictable. Even for the same blob data, sometimes I can get working file, sometimes I just get crapped file.
    Could somebody help me out? I am struggling with it.
    Any input is appreciated!

  • MY system folder, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac) How do I remove them

    I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8. I had a problem with my my operating system (my fault, I moved a file I shoudnt have) couldnt boot up but was able to boot up from a backup. I managed to repair my original system except now all the system folders, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac).  For the most part the dupes are an exact copy, but not always.  I want to remove them to free up space and cant imagine duplicate folders in the /system/library are not hindering my computer. But I dont know where to start and am afraid of doing irreparable damage. Any ideas

  • When downloading/uploading any file with Firefox, Finder shows date but not time

    On my iMac, as I either upload or download a file using Firefox after installing Lion, the Finder window that opens for me to tell it where to either download the file to or upload it from, shows dates of all the existing docs there, but not the time. How can I make it show the time as well?

    I have found the problem.
    A download manager had been installed for a specific website and it was butting in all the time. Even after removing it with 'Add or remove software' it still had its hooks into the system and it was impossible to download anything as it now would not run.
    Had to do an XP 'System restore' before I could get rid of it.
    The offending program was MD_setup.exe size 3,045KB from the themediadownloader.com

    When downloading a ZIP file I get a 'Launch Application' window.
    In Options I have set download to ask for a location and use the download window but this does not work.
    cannot find any way of changing this and there is no option for using an application.
    If I down load in IE I have no problems so it must be FireFox and not a system problem.

  • Problem with downloading a PDF file from a webserver run on Linux

    Hi,
    I've written a simple functionality that manages file attachments.
    Everything works fine (attaching, downloading, deleting) when the webserver runs on Windows.
    However when I deployed the code to the Resin webserver run on Linux and use the Win browser to connect to the app, the downloading of PDF file doesn't work (uploading and downloading of txt, doc, xls, jpg files is OK).
    The downloaded PDF file is almost twice as big as original (~28KB when original is ~12KB) and it can't be open.
    I guess it is the problem of writing to the output stream of HttpServletResponse but I can't localize the problem.
    Here is the code I use for downloading file:
    private boolean downloadFile(HttpServletResponse response, String filePath,
                   String originalFilename) {
         File file = new File(filePath);
         String contentType = URLConnection
                   .guessContentTypeFromName(originalFilename);
         // If the content type is unknown set the default value.
         if (contentType == null) {
              contentType = "application/octet-stream";
         BufferedInputStream input = null;
         BufferedOutputStream output = null;
         try {
              input = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(file));
              int contentLength = input.available();
              response.reset();
              response.setContentLength(contentLength);
              response.setContentType(contentType);
              response.setHeader("Content-disposition", "attachment;
                           filename=\""+ originalFilename + "\"");
                output = new BufferedOutputStream(response.getOutputStream());
              int bufSize = 10000;
              byte[] buf = new byte[bufSize];
              int bytesNo = 0;
              while ((bytesNo = input.read(buf, 0, bufSize)) != -1) {
                   output.write(buf, 0, bytesNo);
              output.flush();
              input.close();
              output.close();
         } catch (IOException e) {
              log.debug(e.getMessage());
              e.printStackTrace();
    }Can you point any problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ala

    This piece is completely wrong and doesn't work for files bigger than 10000 bytes. Replace it by
    byte[] buffer = new byte[10240]; // 10KB exactly.
    int length = 0;
    while ((length = input.read(buffer)) > 0) { // Read next 10KB of input to buffer.
        output.write(buffer, 0, length); // Write specified length of buffer to output.
    }Or just use output.write(input.read()) in a loop of the contentLength as you're alredy using BufferedInputStream/BufferedOutputStream.
    Another thing, the method is declared to return a boolean, but it actually doesn't? I would just let it throw an exception in case of failure instead of returning a boolean and let the calling method handle the exception.

  • SINCE INSTALLING I.E. 11 IN WINDOWS 7, UNABLE TO DOWNLOAD OR SAVE FILES IN FIREFOX; HOW DO I CORRECT THIS PROBLEM?

    This is what I wrote to the Microsoft Community seeking a correction of the issue (still no reply to my request for assistance with this matter from them):
    Can I go back to I.E. 10? Ever since I installed version 11, I've had an unstable desktop. It appears to have damaged the Windows Explorer interface in other browsers, such that when I open the popup window to save downloads and/or other files, all that shows up in the window are the "Save" and "Cancel" buttons, but it does not show the interface to choose where to save the file(s), thus I cannot save anything at all in those other browsers. I primarily use Firefox, and every time I want to save a file, I have to startup I.E. 11 to save anything and everything.
    I would much prefer going back to I.E. 10 which caused me no such problems; but, if I cannot go back to I.E. 10, how do I correct this issue so I can save files in other browsers? This situation has been going on for months now, and I've waited patiently thinking that there would be an update for Microsoft and/or Firefox (as well as Chrome and Safari) that would correct this problem by now; but, even though I have all of the latest updates and versions installed, no updates have corrected the issue at all. I would very much appreciate any help you can give.
    Oh, also, I have tried uninstalling Firefox completely at least twice, and rebooting before reinstalling it to the latest version, but that has not corrected the problem either. I additionally tried turning I.E. 11 off in Windows, and then tried running Firefox to see if the download interface would be restored, but it still had the very same issue(s) [no ability to choose the place to save files, and thus being completely unable to save any downloads and/or other files]. I can't believe that this problem has been going on for so long now without any update(s) resolution.

    The following is the latest that I've written to Microsoft about this entire matter:
    You're still not getting it. I've never had a problem with downloading and/or saving files in I.E.; and I very clearly explained to you guys that the problem is in the other browsers, but it's caused by a malfunction in the Windows Desktop.
    Why can't someone with English as their first language, please help me?
    But, regardless, just in case your recommendation(s) had anything to do with anything, and were perhaps creating the problem in the other browser (though I was pretty sure that it had nothing to do with my problem), I made I.E. the default browser; yet, of course, that did NOT correct the problem. Also, when I set I.E. as the default browser, the explorer.exe file crashed and restarted.
    Nevertheless, because I (wrongly) thought that I couldn't uninstall I.E. 11, because somehow I missed the listing for it in Windows Programs and Features, I went to the latter again and found I.E. 11 listed this time, and uninstalled it. After it completed, I rebooted the laptop. Then I went into Windows Update and looked for what version of I.E. it was then going to want me to update to since I.E. 11 was uninstalled.
    I saw that I.E. was taken all the way back to I.E. 8 and had updates for it as well as to update to I.E. 9, so I did the former updates first, rebooted, then updated to I.E. 9 and rebooted again. Then I ran Windows Update again checking for new updates, and found that there was a cumulative security update for I.E. 9, which I installed and then rebooted once again.
    Then, upon checking for new updates in Windows Update again, I found that the option(s) to update to I.E. 10 or 11 were now optional, which they weren't before, and then I updated to I.E. 10 and rebooted once more. Upon Windows restarting, I checked again for new Windows Updates and there were some security updates, so I installed them and restarted the laptop.
    This time upon rebooting, I checked Windows Update for further new updates and there were none; so I'm now completely updated to I.E. 10; but, because going back to I.E. 10 corrected some of the instability with the Windows Desktop, I am ignoring the optional update to I.E. 11, and I am NOT going to update to it again.
    Throughout the update process, upon restarting Windows, I kept starting Firefox to see if the "Save As" window then worked, but throughout the entire update process, as well as when I completed it, I still could not download or save files [because the window still doesn't show where to save the file(s)---please see the Print Screen copy of what it looks like, attached to this message (sorry, but I.E. won't let me browse for the file, and the tab or windows crashes and reloads every time when I click "Browse" to look for the file to attach)].
    So, I decided to try uninstalling Firefox for the fourth time, rebooting and reinstalling it, hoping that might correct he issue this time since I downgraded to I.E. 10, but the "Save As" window still looks the same, and I am still completely unable to save any files or downloads while in Firefox.
    Oh, I also tried resetting all of the Windows Folder Options again to default settings, and reset all of the folders, in case that had anything to do with the problem, but that still did NOT correct the issue either.
    I am now going to try creating a new user account also with Administrator privileges, changing Users, trying to run Firefox in it, and see if the problem with the "Save As" window is still an issue....
    In the new User profile, the situation is even worse. When I try to save any file(s) in Firefox, Firefox crashes (latest version).
    I wrote to Firefox a couple of days ago, but an arrogant "techie" is giving me the run around and is not helping me, and no else is helping with the matter so far.
    Postscript: Now Windows Explorer (the explorer.exe file) that runs the desktop crashed and restarted again twice while I was trying to print a file, and it appears that it won't let me print at all anymore.

  • How do I continue to be able to download Adobe pdf files with FF4.0 as I was able to with all previous version?

    With FF 4.0 I can no longer download Adobe pdf files. At any website when I click the pdf icon something is displayed about a plugin-handler and nothing further happens - there is either no download or the download stops. Sometimes a partial frame of the pdf frame displays but nothing further happens. I never had this problem with previous versions of FF.

    You must be doing something wrong, or perhaps Windows 7 is interfering. Here's the step-by-step process:
    Launch LabVIEW 2009.
    Open an 8.6 VI. It should show up with an asterisk in the title bar.
    Make some changes.
    Select File -> Save for Previous Version.
    Verify that "8.6" is selected in the dropdown.
    Click "Save...".
    In the dialog click the "Save" button to accept the default of saving the VI into a new folder called "<VI Name> Folder".
    Close the VI. When asked if you want to save changes click "Don't Save".
    Check the timestamp on the newly created file in that folder.
    Open the same 8.6 VI again.
    Make some changes.
    Select File -> Save for Previous Version.
    Verify that "8.6" is selected in the dropdown.
    Click "Save...".
    The "File name" textbox should have the same default name as previously. If you click "Save" Windows should move you into that folder, and the save dialog should remain open. The file listing should contain the VI.
    Click on the "Current Folder" button. You should get a dialog warning you that the operation will save over existing files. Click "OK" to continue. The VI will be saved as the previous version over the previous save that was done. To verify this, check the timestamp on the file.
    I just did the above on LV2009 running under XP just so I could get the button names correct.
    You can repeat steps 10-16 as many times as you want without needing to create a new folder.

  • How can I download zipped CSV files in Firefox and ensure this happens automatically in future?

    When I attempt to download a zipped CSV file in Firefox, the usual pop-up window appears asking what Firefox should do with this file... even after I select "Open with" and choose my Zip File Manager and tick the box that says "Do this automatically for files like this from now on", this pop-up continues to appear every time I come to download files

    @Corel
    Thanks, I had forgotten all about potential server side problems.
    @Conners81 <br/>
    If sample problem files and links are publicly available maybe you could include an example of the link being used, preferably to one of the smaller simpler files.
    *What is the website you are using?
    For comparison an example you may like to try
    * site providing .csv data [http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/cmr-10/WAL-3.4.html]
    ** a small few lines csv download file [http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/cmr-10/csv/WAL-3.4.csv]

    Of course you have the added complication of the zipped file.

  • Problem when downloading the JAR file

    I'm just install JRE and testing my first applet application. I'm facing the problem that I can not download the JAR file from my localhost computer.
    I've enable cache in Java Control Panel and running my applet. Normally, it will download the jar file from my localhost and save it to the cache directory of Java. And then finding all classes neccessary to run my applet in the JAR file.
    But I discover that I can not download the JAR file and save to my computer. I try to put the URL to download this JAR file (http://localhost/myjar.jar) in my web address, it start to download this file properly. But when open it with WINRAR, I got an error that the file "Unexpected end of file".
    I try to put this file from onther computer in my LAN. And use the URL to download it. This time I can open the JAR file with WINRAR althrought the file size is the same
    Anyone know why there are some errors when download from my localhost? Thanks in advance for any help!!!

    Yeah everything matches up!
    Could it have something to do with the string encoding? I created the file in ANSI format? Would this have an effect on it?
