Problems with DP867 MDD

I bought this Mac a while back, had some video issues on start up, but it has been a reliable machine until one day a bunch of "machine language" popped up on the screen, told me to restart, I would restart and the same scenario replayed. I dunno if overheating may have been a problem but I did get a load of dog hair out of the air intake, dust too.....But I got it to run for a couple days and then the machine language reappears as did the restart demand...... long story. When we first got the machine, the video did not always kick in on start up, I would have to restart the machine maybe a second or third time and finally the display would show video. Now there is no video. Also noteworthy, there is no power to the mouse or keyboard. The Mac powers up, chimes like all is well but no video or power to the USB. I renewed the battery, tapped the PMU but still no video or USB power. There is a red LED light on the main board that stays illuminated while the machine is powered up, also the fan on the board runs as it should. I took out the RAM and changed slots, took out the video card and re-seated it too. No change. I tried a different display and no video. The machine might be ready for recycling, dunno. Any thoughts? Thanks for your help.... John

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button.The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure.In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • New RAM problems with my Dual G4 1.25 MDD

    Howdy I've had my Dual G4 1.25 MDD for 2 years and love it. I got it with 1GB RAM, thinking I was set. For Christmas I wanted to Upgrade the RAM to 2GB. from My PowerMac G4 Manual I knew I needed 2x 512MB PC2700 DDR333 CL2.5 SDRAM DIMM's.
    I went to DealRam (part of DealMac) and found 18004memory.com The price seemed great $39 per stick. I ordered it and within a week got 2x 512MB DIMM's. Problem was it was the Wrong RAM spec. I tried that RAM in my Mac 30 different ways and Everytime the computer either wouldn't boot, or it would suffer Kernel Protection Faults. One time it did boot up but the RAM only recognized as 2x 256MB DIMM's. I called the company, got an RMA and returned the RAM, this time they sent me 2 replacement DIMM's.... for a POWERBOOK, SO-DIMM's. I returned it again and finally Got from them the
    2x 512MB PC2700 DDR333 CL2.5 SDRAM DIMM's. They call it Hyperspeed RAM. Anywho, I powered down let the system cool over night and in the morning, popped it open, put the RAM in the 2 open slots DIMM2/J23 & DIMM3/J20. closed it back up and powered up. Everything was snappier, the boot was quicker and I checked About this Mac, it says 2GB. Apple System Profiler showed all 4 DIMM's and I thought everything was fine.
    Computer ran great for hours, no issues. Everything seemed quicker. Computer went to sleep overnight, next day woke from sleep and Tried to use iTunes and during an extensive sort for Songs, the system Locked up. Nothing would work. Had to force restart. this time I tried to Run my favorite online Game, WoW and after it loaded and I started to play, within 5 mins the whole game locked up. The audio sound went into a sort of Loop, I couldnt force quit and had to force reboot. This happened several times. I finally decided to Run the Apple Hardware Test. The Quick test locked up after running 2mins. I let it sit for 1hr just in case it was still doing something and the progress bar and time never progressed. So i forced reboot, ran Test again this time as Extended test. at 8 min & 31 sec the test stopped and I got an Error Code, this time I wrote it down "2MEM/2/4: DIMM3/J20."
    I guess that DIMM failed. I shutdown, popped open case, and removed DIMM3/J20 leaving the Original 1GB RAM and One of the 512MB Upgrades. I rstarted the Test again and Ran the Extended Test once more. It ran for 27mins & 24 secs and everything passed. So. 1.5GB is better than just 1GB. I powered down and powered back up to try and play WoW. Within 5 mins of loading game to play, everything locked up again.
    So I took both of the new RAM out and left the Original 1GB RAM and ran Test everything was great no Errors. Rebooted, and went onto WoW again and was able to play for several hours. I quit game and shut down for night.
    I have since Tried the 2x 512MB DIMM's in over 10 different variations in the computer with and without the original RAM and everytime I run a high end program or game (WoW, iTunes, and Photoshop), I get lock ups, crashes, and other screen weirdness.
    I dont want to have to Return the Memory again. I am already out over $15 from s/h with RMA's.
    PLEASE Any ideas what to do?
    1 thing I noticed the RAM gets very very hot, when I've powered down tand removed the new RAM. I wonder if there is a cooling issue?
    Anytime I put the Original 1GB RAM in, I dont have problems!

    Hi lz3broc,
    Sounds very much like faulty RAM to me, I'm afraid. I'm not sure about the temperature it's running at, but if the surrounding DIMMs aren't having a problem then I would definitely point the finger at those new memory sticks not being up to scratch.
    If you were convinced it was temperature related then you could always try putting heat spreaders on the memory to help with cooling, but as these stick (semi-permanently) to the RAM then you would never be able to return them.
    My personal opinion is that you should send the RAM back and buy two new DIMMs from Crucial Technology. I only ever buy RAM made by them and I've never had a problem with it - it's the same stuff Apple themselves generally use and works a charm every time. Probably not the news you wanted to hear, but that's probably the only way you're going to get a stable machine with 2GB RAM.
    Hope that helps,
    Andy.

  • Frustrating problems with MDD

    I have two issues that I'm trying to take care of. The first is that there are times when my computer will and won't run applications until I choose to quit them. In other words, they just quit without explanation.
    I thought I had found the issue, I ran a popular memory test (forget the name) and I found a problem with one of the sticks. The ones that are currently in there run all the tests fine.
    Now with that said, I'm still having trouble. I thought if I tried to reset my pram then I might be able to limit some things down.
    But here's my second problem - I CAN'T EVEN RESET MY PRAM NOW!! Heh. Frustrating it is. Honest.
    So with that new problem, I tried to restart in open firmware. Not responsive. Went straight to my desktop.
    I'm running 10.5 so I don't know if keystrokes have been changed... but any ideas to try to fix this would be highly appreciated!
    Thanks,

    Hey, Japamac.
    Thanks for getting back with me. I fixed the keyboard issue. It is an Apple keyboard, but it wasn't plugged in to the right location. It actually was plugged into my USB PCI card.
    Now with that said, even after resetting everything, Single User going resetting nvram and holding command opton p and r for PRAM reset.. I'm still having multiple hangs.
    Typically it seems to occur when the computer wants to access some of its resources that it doesn't use all the time.
    Whenever the Mac needs to "think" about something is when it usually seems to crash the applications that's up. Sometimes this on Youtube, sometimes it's as things are being normally quit. Sometimes there's no warrant. I can pretty much expect it if I leave something running overnight that it will have crashed in the morning. Especially Camino or another browser (Safari, Firefox)
    iTunes doesn't seem to cause the problem that much, nor does Mail.
    Sorry that I'm throwing up a lot of random things up. I just want throw out there the symptoms.

    Hi,
    Try iMessaging your own iPhone and see if your account is actually logged in.
    It can appear "enabled" and On line but sometimes it is not.
    Also try sending from your iPhone (number) to your Apple ID and see if it gets to the Mac.
    If it does not use the Sign Out button.
    Then shut down the Mac
    On restart add back the Apple ID to the iMessages account settings.
    I also just checked My wife's iPhone as she popped up red.
    It turned out her iPhone did not have Messages On.

  • Having a problem with creating/using a primary key on a view

    I have a problem with a primary key on a view
    I created the view and primary key as follows:
    CREATE OR REPLACE FORCE VIEW "MDD"."ROCK_LU" ("DESCRIPTION",
         UNIQUE ("DESCRIPTION") RELY DISABLE,
         CONSTRAINT "ROCK_LU_PK" PRIMARY KEY ("DESCRIPTION") RELY DISABLE) AS
    SELECT DESCRIPTION
    FROM MRMC_LU
    WHERE ROCK = 'T';
    The view with the primary key appears to have been created as there were no error messages. (The above was from the sql tab in sql developer.)
    When I try to create the foreign key on my mdd_hr table - I get an error
    /* hr_name - foreign key */
    ALTER TABLE mdd_hr add CONSTRAINT hr_name_fk FOREIGN KEY (hr_name) REFERENCES rock_lu(description);
    Error report:
    SQL Error: ORA-02270: no matching unique or primary key for this column-list.
    When I lookup the index in sql developer, rock_lu_pk is not there.
    All my other foreign keys work - but I don't understand what I am doing wrong with this one. Please help.

    Background - as to why I want to use a view as a lookup table.
    The MRMC_LU table that the view is created from is structured like:
    DESCRIPTION - MINERAL - ROCK - MODIFIER - COMMODITY
    ANHYDRITE - T - T - T
    APLITE - T - - T
    GRAPHITE - T - - - T
    GREYWACKE - - T
    DESCRIPTION is a list of all names of minerals, rocks, modifiers and commodities. T is entered in each valid field. Often a description name is used for both a mineral and a rock or a mineral and a commodity or any other combination. Because this database is just starting up, it was more efficient to create one table that could be updated (and thereby automatically update the MINERAL_LU, ROCK_LU, MODIFIER_LY, COMMODITY_LU views) rather than create and maintain four separate but similar tables. A primary key cannot be generated for the MRMC_LU table as there are nulls in each column
    except DESCRIPTION.
    Perhaps there is a smarter way to do this?

    You can specify constraints on views and object views. You define the constraint at the view level using the out_of_line_constraint clause. You define the constraint as part of column or attribute specification using the inline_constraint clause after the appropriate alias.
    Oracle does not enforce view constraints. However, operations on views are subject to the integrity constraints defined on the underlying base tables. This means that you can enforce constraints on views through constraints on base tables.
    Restrictions on View Constraints
    View constraints are a subset of table constraints and are subject to the following restrictions:
    You can specify only unique, primary key, and foreign key constraints on views. However, you can define the view using the WITH CHECK OPTION clause, which is equivalent to specifying a check constraint for the view.
    Because view constraints are not enforced directly, you cannot specify INITIALLY DEFERRED or DEFERRABLE.
    View constraints are supported only in DISABLE NOVALIDATE mode. You must specify the keywords DISABLE NOVALIDATE when you declare the view constraint, and you cannot specify any other mode.
    You cannot specify the using_index_clause, the exceptions_clause clause, or the ON DELETE clause of the references_clause.
    You cannot define view constraints on attributes of an object column.

  • Some serious problems with Mountain Lion

    Hi everyone,
    I upgraded my mid 2010 15" MBP to Mountain Lion 2 days ago, and I have some serious problems with my machine now.
    - Wifi problem: like many members 's machines, mine has problem to connect to the wifi after sleep or restarting, I had to wait 10 to 15 minutes for it to connected to my home network. Anh I tried to remove all of my settings in System Preferences/Network and added new connection. And now it cant connect to wifi anymore. I'm writing this article while sitting on the floor with my Ethernet cable plugged in my MBP. I connected to internet through a DSL modem and a Airport Extreme as a bridge and Access Point. I also tried to set up all of my network device but my MBP can't connect to the wifi still.
    - Keyboard problem with Pages: I was very happy with the new iCloud syncing for Pages documents but after 5 minutes, I met a big problem with Mountain Lion. Whenever I type in Pages with Vietnames Keyboard( Mac OS X built in or from another developer: http://www.trankynam.com/gotv/ ), Pages stops working immediately. I can still drag the Pages's window around but can't type or do any editing. After that I have to force quit pages. It is really stupid that I'm writing a book in Pages and now I have to stop my working till apple fixes this ridiculous bug. I tried German Keyboard as well and Pages worked flawlessly. Do you hate Vietnamese, Apple?
    - Messages problem: Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I couln't send or receive any messages. It worked perfectly in Messages beta.
    Does anyone have the same problems like me? Any solution such as how to reinstall Messages(I googled but found nothing)
    Apple, please test your software more before release it. I feel like I have no computer at the moment because I can't work, can't surfing the web wirelessly and can't communicate with my friends.

    What Messages to what type of Buddies or Contacts ?
    This
    I found out that the problem with my wifi was my MBP received automatically a ridiculous IP such as 169.254.170.0 instead of 192.168.1.4 as it should be.
    WIll be part of the Issue as will be DNS issues.
    mDNSresponder crashed with Handsoff! v1.5.3. After upgrading Handsoff! to v2.0.2, it works again.
    In this case mDNSresponder also being stopped will stop DNS working.
    I would guess if you have resolved these that you can Chat to people again.

    Hi,
    What version of the OS did you upgrade from ?
    Anything before OS X 10.8.2 may have an issue if the Logic/Mother board has been replaced and the Serial Number not "flashed" back to it.
    In the Apple Icon menu use the About this Mac item.
    In the new panel click twice on the line that tells you the current OS level
    It will change to the Build number (and alternative count to the OS versions) and then the Serial Number.
    If it is missing you need to get it replaced.
    (It is supposed to be done on Repair or Refurbishment).
    An Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider as the best choices.
    There are apps you can download (They are Mac Model specific) but needs careful typing as it is a once only trip.

    after the restart compiuter it's recognizes and works, but after a while i have the same problem again...

    Hi,
    I would try a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
    Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

  • M-Audio Delta 1010LT driver problems with 10.4.6

    I'm having problems with the M-Audio drivers for my Delta 1010LT sound card under 10.4.6. Specifically, I'm getting frequent kernel panics if I try to play sound through the card when I boot up in the morning after the computer has been shut down during the night. I've tried using not only the current version of the Delta driver (2.0.5), but also 2.0.4, 2.0.3, and 2.0.1.
    Recently, after being very frustrated with this problem, I requested and received a replacement card from the vendor, since both I and M-Audio Tech Support suspected that I might have a defective card. I have to admit that there seems to be some progress. At least for the time being, I have a working setup for Pro Tools M-Powered 7.1 with driver version 2.0.5 and Mac OS 10.4.6. However, I'm finding that I'm still experiencing frequent kernel panics if I try to play sound through the card (any sound application causes a problem, not just PTMP) when I boot up my computer in the morning. (BTW, I probably wouldn't have this problem if the driver would allow my computer to sleep! But that's another story . . .)
    I do have a workaround (at least, it seems to be a workaround, though my past experience leads me to believe that it could cease to be one at any moment): immediately upon starting up, I reinstall the driver. Then everything seems to be OK—unless the system freezes (which it does frequently, and which it didn't before I installed the 1010LT), in which case more often than not I get a kernel panic upon rebooting and have to install the driver again.
    Since when it does work, it works very well, I don't think that the problem is with my machine. (I've tried switching slots several times, which does not seem to have an effect.) But something is still clearly not right.
    BTW, through a process of trial and error, I've determined that there seems to be a conflict, at least on my system, between the M-Audio Delta drivers (all versions) and Intego VirusBarrier X 4 (and, I think, also ClamXav). I assume, though I can't support the assumption, that they may conflict with other anti-virus software as well. With Mac OS X viruses beginning to appear, this is a serious problem that I think should be addressed very soon!
    I'd be interested to hear if other users with Delta 1010LT cards have had similar problems under 10.4.6. I've seen a large number of such items involving 10.4.3 and 10.4.4, but there appear to be few reports of such difficulties with 10.4.6.

    I finally gave up and ordered a Firewire 410, which works beautifully. Too bad that I wasted $200 on a card that I couldn't use, but . . .

    Yes, that is a kernel panic. I have no experience with it but if you don't get kernel panics without the adapter, it's almost surely a driver problem. Is this the WL-167g? I noticed that there were no OS X drivers, nor did it mention Mac support on Asus' website.

  • I have a strange WPA problem with my airport card

    To set the scene, I'm using a powerbook G4 with built in airport card. My home router is a Belkin Pre-N MIMO.
    I have had a recurring problem with the router for a few months now, I don't quite know when it started, but it has gotten to the point where I must do something about it.
    The security on the router is set to WPA PSK with a TKIP system. I understand that in order to preserve the integrity of the encryption, the WPA key is routinely changed. In normal circumstances, this transfer is instant, but for some reason on my powerbook, it results in the computer becoming disconnected from the Internet, although it thinks it is still connected. Even more strangely, only port 80 is affected by this, as ftp, POP3, online games and instant messengers work fine.
    Disabling the security on the router seems to fix the issue, but leaves the network open to others. Other wireless computers, including a G4 MDD with a Belkin Wifi card, are not affected by this issue.
    I thought it might be a problem with my powerbook's built in wireless card not dealing with the WPA key change process, but i'm not sure. I'd appreciate any insight.

    This was solved by buying an Apple Airport Base Station.

  • MacBook Pro and Airport connectivty problems with 10.4.8

    Like others I have been having problems with Airport drop-outs since updating to 10.4.8. Using the shareware program (free trial) "Airport Monitor Utility" which displays various parameters from an Airport Base Station, it seems that although the signal level from the MBP is good, the AEBS is reporting high levels of errors being received. The same problem is not evident with either an old Pismo with a Motorola 54g card or my MDD (again with an add-in 54g card).
    Both the PC machines have no trouble conecting to the Airport network and they are also both running 10.4.8.
    The only way it seems I can run a reliable connection with the MBP at the moment is to run the AEBS without encryption but just using MAC address filtering and SSID disabled for security - far from ideal
    I am wondering if the high error rate may be a cause for the drop-outs when using encryption.
    Could others with MBPs, whether suffering this problem or not, please post the results of error rates if possible then we may be able to at least eliminate one potential cause for this problem.
    I've tried all the other suggested 'cures' and had no success....

    Despite the title of the article, the included solution may rid you of AirPort wavering in and out of contact with the base station. It did that for me.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
    However, I was then left with the situation that is the title of the article! Ironic:) My preferences for a particular network would no longer stick, and AirPort was self-assigning an unusable IP address.

    I totally understand the feeling of /sigh... when mucking up what was previously working.
    You could probably just go to your home/user library and remove whatever that toolbar installed (look at their release notes, installation notes, etc and find where it installs stuff) probably in the InputManagers OR Internet Plug-Ins folders. SEE THE kb link below for the apple how-to
    OR use Appzapper (find at macupdate.com, allows several uses in demo mode), drag safari onto it's little blank window, have it show all your safari app & safari installed stuff, (copy & save the safari folders/prefs on the desktop) BUT only zap/remove the actual safari APP, not the other files, prefs, folders, etc.
    Then reinstall the safari or re-run the installer.
    I recommend never to use those kind of toolbars, gizmos, etc from sites like that (so many issues, esp security).
    If you need to install toolbars and any kind of browser gizmos, I think it's better try them on firefox for mac using their add-ons console. Much easier to try there, then disable, than mucking up safari in my experience. fwiw
    also: you know that native OSX 10.4.x apps (& thus Safari) has this great dictionary shortcut: Ctrl-Cmd-D the capability of live look ups which displays a little *popup dictionary* right?

    Symptoms
    Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues.
    Unsupported third-party add-ons may add features to Safari or change its appearance. If you use unsupported third-party add-ons you may encounter issues such as these:
    * Safari quits unexpectedly
    * Safari runs slowly
    * Safari is unable to download files
    * Other unexpected behavior
    Resolution
    Use the add-on's uninstaller, if possible
    To resolve the issues: Quit Safari, then remove any unsupported third-party add-ons you've installed (see if the add-on's installer includes an uninstall feature).
    Then, open Safari again. If this fixes the issue you were having, check the website of the software's developer to see if there is an updated version available, or avoid using the add-on.
    Manually uninstall third-party add-ons
    If the software doesn't have an uninstaller feature, quit Safari and try manually removing the third-party add-on files. These files are usually installed in one or more of the following locations:
    * /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    * /Library/Input Methods/
    * /Library/InputManagers/
    * /Library/ScriptingAdditions
    * ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    * ~/Library/Input Methods/
    * ~/Library/InputManagers/
    * ~/Library/ScriptingAdditions
    The first four locations listed are in the root-level Library on your hard disk, not the user-level Library in your Home folder. The tilde (~) represents your Home folder (choose Home from the Go menu in the Finder).
    If the issue is resolved by removing items from the above locations, return the items one at a time and test Safari. That way you can determine which of them is causing the issue. Once identified, remove the problematic item and put the others back. Check for updates to the items that are found to cause issues, or report the issue to the add-on developer.
    Note: When removing items from the above locations, do not put them in the Trash and empty the Trash. If removing the items does not resolve the issue, you can put them back where they came from. In Mac OS X v10.6, you can use the Put Back feature of the Trash to automatically put them back where they came from.
