Problems with DSLR Footage in CS 5.5

I am using Premiere CS 5.5.  I have no trouble editing AVCHD footage, but a new client is giving me footage shot with various DSLR cameras and this is causing me problems.
First, my specs.
Windows 7
i7-2600 processor
GTX 460 card (1 GB memory, 336 CUDA processors) (Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration is on)
16 GB memory
Separate SATA 7200 RPM hard drives for programs and data files
Now, my symptoms.  When I first turn on the computer and open a project, it works fine for a while, though scrubbing on the timeline with any speed causes a bit of choking.  After some period of time, trying to play a clip on the timeline will cause Premiere to display a single frozen frame, even though the sound is still playing correctly.  It doesn't natter where I move the playback line, I will see this frame frozen on my screen until I turn off the computer.  Rebooting the computer and opening the project is not sufficient to un-stick things - it has to be a full shut down.
Defragging the hard drives does not help.  And the problem happens even if there are no effects on the clips.
Question: which would be a more likely solution for this problem: upgrading the GTX card or investing in a USB 3.0 Raid 0 drive?  Or is there a better solution that I am overlooking?

  • Problems with dSLR footage - help/experience needed

    Hi All --
I'm running Premiere Pro CS5 on 3 different towers at my small studio. We switched to Premiere for the native H.264 support last month and have been experiencing numerous crashes, poor exports etc on several recent projects. Our machines are high powered  (32GB RAM 3,1 and 4,1 Mac Pro Stations with GTX-285 or GForce GT-120) and I don't know if the issue is with the way that we are setting up projects, managing our caches/scratch files [set on local RAID 0]  OR if the complex video shorts we are working on (Up to 6 video layers at a time duting a 3 minute short) are the cause behind the projects to not open on one machine and crash regularly on the others.
Am I just expecting too much from the native H.264 support in CS5? Yes I can edit one or two video tracks without any problems, but the split screens and moving layers that we frequently do might be too much for Premiere? Would I be better off transcoding to a different codec?
At this point I've turned off the Accelerated GPU rendering (regularly crashing) but am still experience frequent iussues and having to restart. I don't fully understand how CS5 works compared to FCP so its difficult for me to troubleshoot.
Is anybody else having these issues? Any fixes? Insight?
    Many thanks for your help!

  • Working with DSLR footage?

    1. Is it easy to work with DSLR footage (Canon or Nikon) with CS6?
    2. Do you just copy the folder from a media card and access it directly from the media browser?
    Thanks in advance

1-depends on your computer... since you provide no hardware information, no way to answer
    2-yes, and read http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1015001?tstart=0

  • Problems with Blackmagic footage going to black

Hello, I am experiencing a problem with my footage dropping out or going to black. It is random. Sometimes the same piece of footage works other times not. Sometimes restarting is enough, but not always. I've trashed the prefs and adjusted memory options, but the problem persists.
    I am on a 2x2.93 GHz Quad_Core Intel MacOS 10.6.4
    with 12GB 1066MHz DDR3 of Memory
    After Effects CS5 v10.0.1.19
And I'm running off a server.
Is anyone else having this problem?

This forces a disk check called fsck -fy it is similar to repair disk on the disk utility. Once it has started up to your log in screen restart normally and see if that helps

  • Problems with HDV footage from sony HDR - HC9

I have a new sony HDR-HC9 cam corder. I want to shoot in hi def (HDV) format for best quality, but I produce standard def DVDs as a finished product. I was hoping to use the built in iLink conversion from HDV to DV when downloading to the computer into iMovie. I have had many problems with this.
Usually, when I set it up to do the downconversion, I see a blue screen in iMovie, although iMovie will ff and rew the camera, no images come across. I experimented with setting the camera in DV record mode at the same time as I had the iLink down conversion set, and this appeared to work. I started downloading an hour tape, and when I came back 65minutes later (after it should have been done), saw the message that iMovie had quit. Reopened the project, and saw an hour worth of footage in the trash, but it was too crazy to reorder the clips from the trash back to the clips pane.
I resigned to import in hdv (1080i) format and not mess with hardware downconversion. This worked fine. I then added some chapter markers and shared the project with iDVD. I saved the project as an image file and then mounted it to check it for errors. The video was OK, but towards the end of the project, the sound was out of sync by a few seconds with the video.
I deleted encoded assets from the iDVD project, then reburned (save as image file). Same defect.
I then started a new iMovie project in standard DV widescreen, and dragged all of the clips from the HDV (1080i) project into the time line. It took over an hour for my mac mini to run the conversion, but the movie in iMovie appeared OK. I redid the iDVD project, and saved as image file. It appears to have worked correctly (although I have not looked at it on my widescreen TV yet to assess image quality.
    Questions:
    1) Has anyone had any luck getting HDR-HC9 iLink HDV-DV hardware conversion to work with iMovie, consistently?
    2) Can anyone comment on image quality issues with converting HDV to DV footage using iMovie software.
    3) Has anyone seen audio sync problems with iDVD from HDV original footage.
    Thanks

  • QT7 install causes problems with 7d footage playback

    Hi
I installed QT7 this week on snow leopard and since then playback of clips shot on my 7d is not smooth. The video locks up but the audio still plays. When transferred to pro res in mpeg streamclip all I get is a totally black film, no audio or video but the playhead moves. All the footage plays fine in the camera so its not a problem with the card.
I have captured footage before using log & transfer and mpeg steram clip with no problems. Playback direct from the CF in the finder was always fine before the upgrade.
Has anyone else had the same problems?
I really need to uninstall QT7 to get back to the set up I had previously but cannot find instructions anywhere of how to do it. Can someone point me in the right direction. Or would QT Pro prove to be an easier fix?
I'm really grateful for any help.
    Thanks
    Adrian

QuickTime Player is designed to drop frames if the viewing machine can't process the data fast enough.
A two minute file that is 2.8 GB's in file size suggests a data rate that would exceed the playback abilities of nearly any modern machine.

  • Problems with DSLR video and PR crashing

Hello! I'm a new user to Premiere and am having some problems importing DSLR video (5Dmk3 24p). I've done a lot of searching and have found a few people with similar problems, but I wasn't able to work through figuring it out. So now I'm consulting the best of the best.
My problems: (note: when I say crash, I mean hangs indefinitely. I've never seen an error message through any of this.)
Premiere Pro (5.5) sometimes crashes when I import videos. There seems to be certain videos that make Premiere hang but I can't isolate the problem to a file either. One file will make PR crash one time, when I restart the program the same file will import fine. It's quite rare where I can import an entire folder (~20) of videos, but it happens once in a while.
When I have all my videos imported, when I open up my project some videos will show as offline. Just like my previous problem, the files change each time I open Premiere. Sometimes when I save the project with these offline clips, PR will crash when I try to close it.
Video of the problem: (pardon my poor TV persona )
Premiere crashing on video import -> http://jonyoder.com/video/PR-screencast.mp4
Videos not coming online & most likely the problem...Quicktime -> http://jonyoder.com/video/PR-screencast2.mp4
My computer: Intel i5, Windows 7 65bit, 16gb RAM, 60GB SSD HD, 1.5TB storage SSD. Premiere is updated (5.5.0 233), I have all the computer/driver updates that I know of.
I've tried reinstalling Quicktime (several times) and also reinstalling Premiere. I've tried changing the scratch disk, the Adobe CS agent said I should import files one by one and from the desktop but to no avail. A work around that kind of works is to import a few files, save, import, save, etc., so that when Premiere crashes, I can keep importing where I left off.
This problem is really bugging me and I would so appreciate it if any of you have some wisdom to share. I read online where someone had a similar problem and ended up reencoding to a different codec as a workaround, but I would rather not have to do that. Thanks you!

Wow wow wow it works! I thought I tried this but I guess not. It was a painful experience but I now know a ton more about troubleshooting Premiere, how codecs work, and am a slightly higher level geek. Thank you so much! This is so much better than reencoding.
I'm super happy to hear this...but I have one quick question: will this be fixed with an update? I just bought CS5 (from CS2) and probably won't upgrade for another ~5 years. I can live with this though, I'm just curious. =)

  • Problem with digibeta footage

i'm trying to edit digibeta footage that was given to me. i've works out some of the kinks but one problem remains:
the footage is very interlaced. i've used a de-interlace filter with the flicker (maximum) setting, and this seems to be working. i was just wondering if perhaps there is a better way.
the footage was shoot digibeta, captured with DS AVID, then exported with quicktime conversion with the default settings. the person who exported said that he applied alpha to it when exporting by accident.
let me know what you guys think. thanks.

COnverting footage from one edit system to another can always cause issues. Best to capture with the edit system you intend to edit with.
As for VERY interlaced...there is no such thing. Either it is interlaced, or it isn't. Digibeta is an interlaced format...so of course it will be interlaced. And there should be no problem working with it as such. But are you judging the quality of the image on the COMPUTER monitor, or an external Broadcast monitor? Never use the computer monitor to judge footage. It doesnt display both fields, only one, so it will look odd.

  • Problems with displaying footage in 4k

Hey! I have footege witch was recorded with camera Red One in 4k resolution and when I import it, for example, to Premiere CS5 it don't want to display... I see only black screen in composition window, nothing else. The same problem is when I try to encodeing it in Adobe Media Encoder CS5. On the display I see only one thing... "rendering". Do you knew what its wrong? It may be problems with drivers?
This is my computer specification (the most important components):
    GeForce GTX 480 1536MB DDR5/384bit
    Intel Core i7 870
    DDR3 16GB 1600MHz
    Please help ^^

Problem solved ^^ I'd instaled update to AE (version 10.0.2), AP (version 5.0.3) and AME (version 5.0.1) - and now everything is working ^^

  • I have green artifacts with DSLR Footage. What is causing this?

I'm getting weird green flickers in my renders whenever I use any footage taken on DSLR. It happens about once every 10 seconds or so any RUINS all my renders. I've tried rendering to a host of different codecs and file types. I even replaced my video card and re-installed my OS.
    Running
    Windows 7 Ult x64
    Nvidia GTX 660Ti
    16 GB RAM
    Intel 2600K
All hardware has been tested, and works with every other file format.

I have the problem too in AVC and MPEG2-Files. Outside AE the Clip is decoded correct but inside there are random green artefacts. It seams the decoder do it wrong. Cleaning mediacache doesn't work. After  a clean the artefacts are simply on another position.

  • Old problem with HD footage, Considering upgrade

    Hi all,
I've been here with this question since day one with my rig (2.5 years+).
I'm not able to edit HD footage properly, the editing process is super slow, I can't seem to preview the footage because it just lags.
The footage is from numerous cameras each movie, DSLR, GoPro, MTS, etc.
I work 90% of the time with only one stream of video.
My current setup is as follows:
    i7 2600k 3.4 (no OC), p8z68 v pro MOBO, 16gb ram (4x4GB G.Skill RipJaw X Edition Dual Channel CL7-8-7-24)
    GTX 560 Ti
500gb black caviar sata 3 for os
2*1tb black caviar sata 3 raid for Project & Media
2*1tb black caviar sata 3 raid for Scartch,Renders,Etc.
    2tb green caviar for backups.
    *using the onboard raid controller.
    My workflow is really tedious, I'm working with proxy files to overcome the slow editing problem;
    1. Getting the hd clips from the client
    2. encoding the files to low res avi/mpeg
    3. editing
    4. link media to HD footage (Manually - aprox 30-40 mins)
    5. check for any errors
    6. review the film - very slow because of the HD
    7. export
    So.. any movie, takes forever.
A lot of people tried to help with my current hardware, but I couldn't find one single solution to the problem.
So, I want your advice, should I upgrade my rig? because if I know for a fact, that upgrading it in a small budget will get the things smooth, It will be worth while in the short term.
If you recommend upgrading, what should I go for? what can I keep ?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Eliran.

    Biran, welcome to the forums
Because of your GoPro and DSLR media without any overclocking you really need much more CPU power.  At least a hex-core.  But the first thing you have to do is read Harm's encyclopedia on building an editing computer for Premiere Pro on our web site, especially his Tweakers Pages.  Look especially at this graphic to see why you need that CPU upgrade.
Notice that GoPro and DSLR QT are both extremely CPU intensive.  Initially you could just start out with a new motherboard, CPU and CPU cooler; and possibly reuse your RAM, GPU and disk drives.  We would have know more about your case and power supply.  The next (later) upgrade would be in the disk drive area.

  • Aspect ratio problem with original footage.

I use a Canon mini DV camera (MD160) that shoots in widescreen, and I do all my editing in iMovie 08, all projects are Widescreen 16:9.
No problems until now, but I imported footage the other day that came up squashed (pillarboxed) in 4:3 size. The thumbnails are normal size (widescreen), as they always have been, but the preview screen has cropped the footage to make it fit in my widescreen project. So I'm losing some of my shot.
What really messes me up is that this has happened to random pieces of footage from 6 months ago too, but some footage from last week is unaffected. It is NOT THE PROJECT that has changed, but the original imported footage in my event library, which was always widescreen. Even original shots I took with the iSight camera have changed to the squashed format.
And I obviously can't e-mail Apple, so what's going on? Is there any idea out there what caused this? And how do I alter original footage - I don't want to crop, so is there any way to stretch a 4:3 image into 16:9 - if I can, it will look fine, back to normal.

<font color="blue"The thumbnails are normal size (widescreen), as they always have been, but the preview screen has cropped the footage to make it fit in my widescreen project. So I'm losing some of my shot.</font>
The thumbnails use the current embedded "scaled" dimensions to create the aspect for the thumbnails. On the other hand, the project ignores the current dimensions and uses the embedded aspect flag to set preview display and export/share output.
If you then "move rejected clips to trash", it deletes the bits you don't want, but then converts the remaining section into a "mov" file. This is what has been happening to my footage. So basically I can't get rid of extraneous footage (60GB+ of the stuff!) without altering the aspect ratio of my movie. How do I stop this happening?
Thanks for posting this information. It seems that when the "kept" file segments are copied to the new file container, the aspect flag is not copied. Believe this should be brought to Apple's attention ASAP as an enhancement (or a bug since it does not adhere to aspect flag priority use in main routines). Will run my own test to confirm this and likely post my own feedback report. Suggest anyone else having this problem add their support to get this corrected as soon as possible.

  • Exporting DVCPRO HD 720p60 Quality Problems with P2 footage.

I have ingested several clips from P2 cards some shot at 24 and some at 60 using fcp 5.1.4. When I go to export out a QT file I choose file>export>using quick time conversion. Under format options I select DVCPRO HD 720p60 for compression type, but I get no quality settings under the compressor heading to modify. Just Motion, preview and data rate. All of wich are locked... When I hit okay the movie settings dialog box reads Compression:DVCPRO HD 720p60 Quality: Medium Dimensions: 960x720 (1248x702) (Compressor Native). How do I change the quality to best? A friend told me he had the option to change in fcp v 5.0.1. Also, in the Sequence Setting Dialog Box under QuickTime Video Settings I select Advanced and it shows me the compression type DVCPRO HD 720p60 and Motion with Frames per second, but the box under Compressor is blank as well. Is my software faulty or am I going about exporting exporting a high quality QT HD 720p60 file the wrong way?
Secondly, when I ingest footage from a P2 card does it maintain the frame rate data that it was captured at digitally regardless of the projects audio video settings? I ask this because one project I did the easy setup after I already created a sequence by mistake with dv settings and the footage show a vid rate in the bin at 23.98 fps regardless if it is footage shot at 23.98 or 59.94. When I made a new project using the easy setup from the start and ingested a clip shot at 60 it show in the as vid rate of 59.94 not 239.8 like the first project I made. A tad confused as I feel I am not getting the best quality out of my footage. Does this have to do with setting the camera to 24pn for variable frame rates? Or does the vid rate pull from the project setting?
As a side note, some of the footage I export appears to be slightly grainy, not sure if this is a result of the setting problems I am having.
    Thank You in Advance!!!
    Best,
    Hans

If you are trying to export and maintain the same quality you have in the timeline then you don't need to use conversion. Just export to Quick Time Movie and check the box for Use Current Settings and Make Self Contained.

  • Weird problem with DVX100b footage

I've got two sources of video in my timeline. Some XL1s footage shot at 30P which looks fine, and some DVX100b footage SOME OF WHICH does not look fine One big clip does not look fine. i don't know what mode the DVX was shot in, either 24P or 24P advanced I think. SOME of the DVX footage has a problem. The difference between the bad DVX assets and the OK DVX assets is that the bad assets claim to be 23.97 under properties:format. If I go frame by frame in the 29.97 timeline, the bad footage plays this pattern of advancing the frames - advance, advance, repeat, advance, interlace, advance, advance, repeat, advance, interlace. that is how the 23.97 footage plays in my 29.97 timeline.
So I also have good footage also shot with the DVX that is 29.97 footage in a 29.97 timeline. This pattern goes: adv, adv, adv, int, int, adv, adv, adv, int, int. A 3:2. Looks fine I guess.
So how do I change the behavior of the bad clip? How do I modify it's setting so that it considers itself 29.97 footage?
If I "conform" this asset to 29.97 in cinematools its too fast. help!?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
    TJ

That was helpful. I didn't actually fully know the difference between 24p and 24pA. now I do, thats good. I'm not sure that understanding the cadences better was able to help this situation because its so strange. Somehow though, this problem happened AFTER I captured it. I just pulled up my backup files from another disc, older project file, backed up assets. and there, my bad clip is fine. So something happened to the clip since I backed it up that is making it not work. Somehow it was made into a 23.98 clip, and I couldn't reverse it properly. it doesn't make any sense to me either! This old one is 29.97, and it works perfectly in a 29.97 timeline as far as can tell so far. I have no idea what happened. I don't recall ever fussing with it. The only thing I can think of is that I think I may have sent it into imovie as test footage while helping somebody learn imovie. I'm just going to say that backing up the initial project was a good idea, there may be a leprechauns in my computer, and I'm walking away from this post because the problem is fixed and I doubt I'll encounter it again. As for multiple frame-rates, I hadn't known that was possible until I read a post that claimed it used to be. So I do understand that multiple frame rates is not possible. Anyhow, "walking away". Thanks so much for the responses.

  • Having some problems with reconnecting footage after copy'ing to a new computer.

I'm working on a stop-motion project with a lot of footage, the AE project files that I use have been copied multiple times back and forth between several computers.
Several months ago I had this weird problem when opening a project on a different computer, all the footage was disconnected, so I had to reconnect.
Now this happens a lot, but haven't been a problem since when I choose the footage file or sequence to be reconnected, AE would reconnect all te other files too.
But this time, it didn't do that, I have to go in and reconnect every picture or sequence one by one, while the folders containing the footage have always remained the same.
Somehow it stopped doing this and I could reconnect everything the normal way again.
Today I copied all this footage to my brand new mac book to edit, but when I open the AE projects, I again have to reconnect EVERY SINGLE FILE manually.
Which is very frustrating, because like I said before, I have a lot of footage!
The previous computers where I used to work on had Mac OS 10.6, the new mac book is running Mac OS 10.8

Smart-assy guess o' the day: Your file naming sucks (no offense). I tend to think that there's some issue here, but without actually seeing your project structure and knowing more about how you store your files, this is not going anywhere. For all intents and purposes this could be something completely outside Adobe's control, anyway due to changes in file handling and Unicode in OSX. Your file names might simply have characters that are assigned to different Unicode ranges between OSX versions or different default languages or the file names get truncated. Could even vbe something with one volume being formatted case-sensitive, something which Adobe apps can't handle properly yet...
