Problems with dual layer disks.

This is the first time I have needed to burn 8gigs on 1 disk so I went out and bought some dual layer disks(ouch!!!). The first copy burned fine and works but I made a small typo and had to fix it and reburn. After that the disks will not burn and dvdsp4 keeps locking up and I have now wasted 2 disks that I had to give my oldest daughter for. My 2.7 locks up so tight I have to do a hard shut down to reboot. any suggestions?

When you re-build, are you doing so over the existing build. Meaning, are you building right at the very same folder location, without first clearing the contents of that folder?
You might also try to locate the PAR files are remove them. You do this by closing DVDSP, and then looking through the file folders where your project files are. Locate the .PAR files and remove them. When DVDSP is restarted, it will re-parse the files as if they're new to the project. That combined with building to a clean folder with no existing files is as clean a build as you can get.

  • Player compatibility problem with dual layer media

I've created a dual layer DVD and there is a problem with compatibility from player to player.
It plays fine in one of my DVD players but will not load in the other.
The duplicators tested my master on 2 players and it loaded on both, but would lock up if a chapter was selected from the submenu.
It has 4 tracks of content. 3 menus, and a bunch of chapter markers. The original build had stories (replaced with standard chapter markers) but I removed them hoping it would solve the problem.
The imported video tracks were created with Compressor. MPEG-2 2 pass VBR max bit rate 7.5. AC3 audio tracks. 7.7 GB on disc.
I'm already way over my deadline and ahve no idea what to do next other than maybe recompress so the disc is not so close to being maxed out.

Thats just how compatible that media is... +R DL (double layer) & -R DL are not that compatible. Recordable media is less compatible that replicated discs but double and dual layer media can be 50% compatible at best (depending on your target market...)
Good quality media, Verbatim +R DL for example burnt at slow speeds helps improve things,
    -Jake

  • Why does the file size change when put into an iDVD project? And problems with dual layer discs...

I exported a short video of mine from Final Cut Express and the size of the file came out to 7.3 GB. When I put it into an iDVD project, it says that the file is only 800 MB. I tried just burning it onto a dual layer disc anyway to see if it might still burn at the original file size, but the disc came out unusable for some reason, and obviously hadn't been burned anywhere near full-capacity. So, I tried it again, and the exact same thing happened.
I guess my first question is: why is iDVD changing the size of the file? I want the quality to be the best it can be, so keeping it at 7.3 GB as opposed to 800 MB is rather important.
Secondly, why did the dual layer discs come out unusable? I've burned single layer discs before and they haven't been an issue. Also, I know for a fact that the drive can burn dual layer discs, so that isn't the issue.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide me with help on this issue.

Guessing here but it looks like you edited/exported an SD/DV sequence of about 30 min in FCE. DVD needs to be MPEG-2 so iDVD compresses the original file down to the size that you report.

The quality will be what the MPEG-2 compression and the software allow for. MPEG-2 is DVD standard .... there's no way around that.

Guessing again but it would seem that you burned a Data DVD instead of a Video DVD which would be unusable by a set-top player. As I said above you can't get around DVD standards.
If by any chance your video was HD originally you can try to go the Blu-Ray route using Roxio Toast or FCS 3 (discontinued) or FCP X. You will also need a Blu-Ray burner.

  • Problems with dual layer DVD reading MBPro (2009)

    Hello,
recently i wanted to take a look at a dvd that came with a magazine (for pcs, but that shouldn´t really matter here) on my macbook pro from mid 2009 (see http://support.apple.com/kb/SP541) with the latest version of osx.
Unfortunately, it didn´t succeed to read the dvd. only ejected it after doing a little searching and making strange noises.
According to the technical specifications this macbook pro should be able to at least read dual layer dvds. I won´t even try to burn one of those, because after doing a little research on the www i found a lot of entries with people going insane with the burning capabilities of macs concerning dual layer media.
Unfortunately i couldn´t find anything on the topic in the forums here. Also no official statement whether macs can or cannot cope with dl media. In my opinion, if it´s specified in the tech specs, then the computer should also live up to the expectations.
Are there any suggestions on how to go about with the matter of dl media and macs? Any information would be much appreciated. Also a notice from apple would be nice, this seems to be a matter (given, although probably not of top priority) concerning quite a lot of people and machines.
    kind regards,
    Reinhard Sommerer

    Hello again,
well - thanks for the information. i would like to point out that the dvd i was trying to use was not for burning purposes. it was a medium that came with a magazine. out of my experience sometimes these work even better than home-burnt dvds, but that might be subjective.
anyway, tonight i gave it another try with the cleansed medium. apx. in the same condition as last time (had stored it in a safe place) and big surprise: this time it didn´t read neither side again. kind of a drawback - maybe tomorrow i´ll have more luck again.
so my hopes for an apple official to comment on this forum won´t be heard, i guess. although it appeared to me that last time here i had seen a user profile resembling an official apple profile. but i might be wrong, i´ll just keep on wondering about this so-called dl-drive.
    kind regards,

  • Incompatibility issues with Dual Layer DVD+R  help?

I think I've made a serious mistake in believing I could author a Dual layer dvd for replication and sale on my own. I've spent over 14 months on this film, which is working perfectly in Encore, complete with extensive menus and transitional movies.
I've done my best to transcode the media in the most compatible way (keeping bitrate below 7mbps and using dolby digital audio format) BUT I'm still having bad luck with MOST dvd players.
The DVD plays properly on my cheap sony player, but both my toshiba and humax/tivo players failed to read the disc. (multiple tries/burns....or coasters, now) I've read that there are common problems with dual layer +R.
MY QUESTION IS: what is the BEST POSSIBLE WAY to author/burn this project for mass replication? Can I really achieve the result I'm looking for with Encore or will I have to give up and go to a professional authoring house with DLT capability?
Will I get the best result by burning from encore straight to disc OR burning an image or folder, then using a third party burning program?
Thanks SO MUCH for any responses. This process has been soul-crushing.

    >The DVD plays properly on my cheap sony player, but both my toshiba and humax/tivo players failed to read the disc. (multiple tries/burns....or coasters, now) I've read that there are common problems with dual layer +R.
Marc, the only mistake I think you are making is in assuming that set top players can handle a written DVD+R DL disc.
Support in older players is at best sketchy.
If the disc is working properly in at least one player, then you should be good to go.
Replication will produce a different type of disc. One that
    i will
    play properly.
Not all burners support book typing, and unless you know what you're doing here do not use these "fudges". It's best using Plextor, and even Benq burners. The freeware utility IMGBurn has this ability, and it also tells you what burners do this. I've never needed it personally, as my Pioneer burners & Denon players have no trouble with +R DL media.
What you really need is a player that you
    i know
plays DVD+R DL discs properly. Once you know your player is good with the format, then all other inconsistencies are player related, not authoring, and not your problem. There is simply no way at all you can guarantee any form of compliance with +R DL media, as there is nothing in the specs that says any set top player has to read these discs. Or -R DL where support is generally even worse.
Whilst most players will read -R single layer & +R single layer, again there is no mandatory requirement to do so.
You will need to get these
    i replicated
and not duplicated. Duplication (burning) will result in a lot of returns, and a lot of wasted money.

  • Best External dvd burner for dual layer disks?

    Hi everyone,
At some point my internal dvd burner in my mac book pro died, and apple replaced it. After that, I couldn't burn a dual layer disk. They've changed it twice more to accomodate me (the genius bar is awesome), but I still only have mediocre results. No problem burning regular dvds or cds. So I wondered is there a REALLy good external burner for DVD-DL that you have experience with? Thanks!

A good bootable multi-interface enclosure (empty) for an external CD/DVD drive will run about US$70.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MRSFW8U2RF/
They also sell SATA drives pre-installed in that same enclosure.
Many users find installing an internal drive themselves no more difficult than doing a memory upgrade themselves.
Others prefer not to work inside their computer.
Based on your graphics card and the original drive, I expect your Mac Pro is an older model. All before 2009 accept an ATA INTERNAL drive such as this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/Mac_Pro_Xeon
That page also has a video of how to install a replacement DVD drive.

  • Burned dual layer disk w/idvd 603- audio out of sync w/video

i burned a dual layer disks with idvd 6.0.3 and the video stalls about 20secs in, and then when it uh, "unstalls", the audio and video are totally out of sync. this goes on for the whole 90 min movie. if i play a scene from the scene selection menu, it works fine. also, it works fine when i play the movie from the project file from either imovie or idvd. its only the final burned product thats affected. i tried deleting the "encoded assets" and burning it again, which didnt work, same problem. finally, i tried both disks on a settop dvd player and apple dvd player application on a few different computers.
dont know what to do. the idvd project file is working fine untill i burn a disk. the problem is only on the burned dvd. so i guess i need to trash my whole project (AGAIN!!! YAY!!!) and start over (AGAIN!!! YAY!!!). wow, ive never had so many problems with an application before in my life. i dont have much hair left to pull out.

Have you tried burning a disc image to the desktop yet from the file menu within iDVD6 and using apple's dvd player app to actually play said disc image?
if the image plays exactly as expected then we're looking at a media issue and not an iDVD issue. j/c ...what brand of media and type are you currently using? Verbatim & maxell are the recommended choices ....
also try lowering the burn speed within apple's disc utilities or Toast to 4x or lower.

  • Can't Burn Dual Layer Disk

I have a project in Encore CS6 that I have been trying to burn to a dual layer disk using an external LG Dual Layer Burner. It is connected to by computer via USB. My Computer Specs are as follows:
    ASUS X53Z Series
Windows Edition: Windows 7 Home Premium - Service Pack 1
    Manufacturer: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
Processor: AMD A6-3420M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 1.50 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 6.00GB (5.48 GB usable)
    System type: 64-bit Operating System
    It is a laptop computer.
I have already looked for a solution to this problem, and the only thing I found was that I should click "run as administrator," so I tried that, but it didn't help. When I am burning the disk, it freezes right after the transcoding process. It goes into the writing process and it freezes at 167.94 KB out of 555.35 MB (this is only a test disk, so it's still small at the moment). I know that I am following all the menu limits (etc.), because I was able to burn a single layer DVD, but when I put the movie onto the disk, I will need it to be a Dual Layer DVD. Do you have any suggestions?

As a test... Create a DVD output ISO file and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)

  • Dual layer disk, single layer capacity! What am I missing

    Greetings,
I have a project which is 6GB in size, so I'm burning onto a dual-layer DVD which 'Project Information' says is ~7.2GB in size. For the record this matches what 'More Info' gives me when I insert a blank disk and check the details from the desktop DVD icon. I also select 'dual layer' in the Project setup.
Problem is that this seems to truncate at ~4.9GB.
If I get 'More Info' from the burned DVD it says that the capacity is 4.9GB and it's full.
    What am I missing here?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    jon

I guess for the same reason that completing the iDVD
    tutorial isn't compulsory...
...which, of course, everyone reads dutifully... however, at the risk of sounding trite, while the manual says "select Best Quality when recording dual-layer disks" it doesn't add the killer-qualifier "... otherwise your disks won't record properly" *. This is the lesson learnt.
Just to be clear here - this issue is not about misunderstanding the potential vs actual capacity within the two encoding-modes, as iDVD indicates in the Project Info that this is sufficient...
By the way... referring to '*' above and to wrap this bad boy up nicely I can confirm that the recommendation from SDMacuser is totally on the money - if you encode the image to disk and then use Disk-Utility/Toast to burn to the disk at a slower speed then everything's just fine and dandy... so maybe the manual should be modified to append "... unless you're encoding to a disk image which you then burn to media using Disky Utility"
    Thanks to all
    ev@0r8
The name of the two compression modes can be confusing: 'Best
Performance' gives you UP TO 60 minutes of content on a SL disc and
UP TO 120 minutes of content on a DL disc. 'Best Quality' gives
you UP TO 120 minutes of content on a SL disc and UP TO 240
minutes of content on a DLdisc.

  • Want to degrade project quality & force content to fit on a dual layer disk

I have a project that is around 19 GB in size, according to my DVDSP 3 meter. I want to degrade the quality of the video and force it to fit on a dual layer disk. Is this possible? Or, should I send the project to Toast and compress it there, forcing it to fit?
Here's a description of the project:
I have 240 small 100 MB clips to compile on a dual layer DVD. (It is a teaching DVD).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jake sorry did not see your post till just now...
Hi Drew, not sure why you are saying use 1-Pass CBR and to drop the bitrate really low?
In the past for very static things, such as text or what I though the poster was describing, I found that a CBR works better than a VBR. I am 99.99% sure that Perry was the one who mentioned that way back when and I tried it and it worked nicely, so have been running with it ever since. (Periodically I go back to run some more tests, and so far it has pretty much held true at least for me.)
I think of it this way (and I know you know this stuff:), more from how my head wrapped around it, and was thinking of the more general DVD SP description of VBRs as mentioned below) - in general, if there are no changes between the frames, VBR is not going to allocate different rates since each from uses the same rate, 2 Pass primarily is looking for areas of motion. So for what I thought what was described, CBR would seem the way to go.
Though of course if some sections have more color, etc, maybe it is worth it, for instance one segment has three big color circles on the white board vs just one circle.
The DVD SP guide mentions it is looking for motion areas, though the Compressor guide indicates it is broader than that, so I guess I was thinking more of the motion search as oppossed to detailed areas since it seemed fairly static with not much detail - linear graphics and marks, and then followed through on time of encoding vs possible quality increase.
And the budget idea is the way to go.
    Time to rewrap my head

  • Burning to dual layer disks

In DVD Studio Pro 4, my movie is too large to fit on a standard 4.7 GB DVD disk (I got a dialog box saying the media won't fit). Is there a preference item or setting somewhere, where I can set it to dual layer disk instead of a single layer disk. Toast has such a setting option. Does DVD Studio Pro 4?

    Welcome to the Boards
As  Certified mentioned you will need to set the disc to Dual Layer
Press the "F3" key and it will look like the image in the following link:
    [Lay of Land|http://dvdstepbystep.com/layofland.php]
The disc will be in the upper left section (blue), and in the image in the link it is "Untitled Disc", click on it and in the inspector (in the lower section in bright purple) the second tab from the left will "Advanced" where you set the DL.
One important thing to keep in mind is that you will need a layer break since you using a Dual Layer Disc - there has to be a break point where it crosses over from Layer 0 to Layer 1, if you have no Chapter Markers at all (or a limited number of Markers, none of which fall near the point which is a bit more than half the size of the assets) you will get an error that a Layer is the wrong size.
    What you do is
1.) Set up markers in the areas where your would guesstimate the Layer Break(s) should be
2.) Build the project (but not format)
3.) Format a Disc (in the dialog that comes up, click on advanced tab, then where it says break point, use the pulldown which will have all valid breakpoint markers dark/black, while non-valid Layer Break Markers will be faded) If no marker is black there is no marker in the right place, regardless of you use automatic or not.

  • Has anyone used Toast 7.02 with Dual Layer media?

I bought a three-pack of Verbatim +R double layer discs just to experiment with (this is my first Mac with a DL burner). I've had some problems with Toast simply not responding but other than that occasional problem I've been able to burn Sony DVDs at 8x.
I'd like to try to burn one of the dual layers but I don't know if I should start with Toast or just create a burn folder or just let the OS do its thing or what.
Has anyone had experience with DL disks and Toast? The drive in my Intel iMac is a "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846" (I've heard that some iMacs have different mechanisms?)

Thanks - I'm going to give it a go today. Just from the general impression I have from numerous conversations and lurking around here and other sites there seems to be a growing consensus that Verbatim DVD media is the best (and possibly CD media as well). I usually tend to simply buy whatever is on sell in the week when I'm running low and Sony media has done well while with Maxell (usually the brand on sale!) I usually find a few clunkers in a spool (mind you this was with my MDD G4,and I had both slots tricked out with Pioneer 106's).
I'm going to go web crawling later today, too, to see what the best pricing is for Verbatim DL's - I paid $23 at Office Depot for three in jewel cases but it was the only DL packaging they had and I'm sure prices have come down! (One would think!)
I've been using 7.02 since its release in November (?) but, with Toast, I always make certain not to trash my old app so that I'll not need to fish out the CD should new versions emit flying insects. I DO wish Roxio would release Toast as a Universal app - and soon! I also may try going back to 7.01 to see if that might 'fix' the occasional freeze I'm getting.
Thanks so much for letting me know about your success with Toast and Verbatim +R DL media - I am almost borderline OCD about back-ups and the more I can fit on a single disc the merrier I will be!

  • Dual Layer Disk

    Hey!
I am trying to create a Dual Layer video DVD. I've created a project in iDVD, and have exported it to a disk image.
When I did that, it told me that doing this would make a disk image that could possibly not play in other players.
When I was finished with that disk image, I created a new R/W disk image in Disk Utility. I set it up with a custom background, and a few different files and folders for DVD-Rom content. (I wanted to do this rather than use iDVD's DVD-ROM feature, as iDVD's DVD-Rom feature is quite limited.)
Anyway, after I finished up, I copied over the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders from the image iDVD created, and ejected the disk image.
Using Disk Utility to burn the disk image to a DVD+R DL disk, I ended up with a disk that was only readable in my DVD+R DL equipped MacBook Pro. I also found that the DVD Player application opened, but said "Disk Type unsupported" or something similar, however I was able to get it to play my disk by choosing "Read from a VIDEO_TS folder" in the file menu, and selecting the VIDEO_TS folder from my newly-burnt DVD.
Does anyone know what I can do to solve this problem? Does it have anything to do with me not making the disk image read-only when I was finished?
I simply want a nice looking folder to open on Macs for the DVD-ROM content, and not have all the DVD-ROM items stuffed into a "DVD-ROM" folder, as iDVD does for me.
Any tricks hints or suggestions would be welcome ASAP. I have a 50-disk production run who's deadline is this Friday (May 18th).
    Thanks in advance!

I think if I were attempting to do all this I'd first try using Roxio Toast if you are not pleased with the way iDVD6 adds data to the DVD Rom content area. Here's Toast 7 instructions for doing the same procedure:
I really need to be able to NOT sit and wait for iDVD to encode forever whenever I need to re-burn this disk.
Suggest making a Disc Image first thru the file menu on iDVD and use Roxio Toast or Apple's Disc Utilities for the actual burn at 4 x or slower. Remember to lower the burn speed when you go to burn a DVD thru either of the above apps. (Slower is better).
    Good luck.
