Problems with DVD writer

I recently built a new machine with a P965 Platinum MB.  I put in a Optiarc AD7170 DVD writer.  Even though I was able to install windows XP with it, I immediately had problems once windows XP was up and running.  The MSI utility CD wouldn't run.  Windows explorer would hang up.  I would also get some fatal windows errors.  I replaced the DVD writer with a CD writer that I had laying around and everything was fine.
I put the DVD writer in my older machine and it works fine.  I also had a friend try it in his and everything was OK.
I couldn't find anything on the web about this particular brand.  There was some mentions in this forum about JMicron.  Could there be some incompatibility with the writer and the motherboard or the JMicron controller?

I have a similar but actually quite different problem.  My p965platinum's BIOS won't even show my IDE drives,  sometimes,  well most of the time..

I have reset the CMOS several times and once in a great while the IDE and the devices,  1 WD60GB HDD and 1 Asus 1814 DVDR/RW,  will show and work.   I have changed out the cables several times and It showed up one time.  I just bought a new cable (24" rnd 80) and that hasn't helped. I have checked the power plugs to the devices and they have power.     I have set the drives from IDE - SATA - etc.   No go.  The DVD's jumper is set to Master and is at the end of the cable,  the HDD is set to Slave  on the middle of the cable.
Can't see a correlation but Boot.ini running in PAE mode.
Could there be something wrong with the board or the BIOS?
Twice I have done a hard shutdown and it has showed up.  But when I restart or shut it down for the night It won't show when it starts back up??   System Restore does nothing.
On other old BIOS' I could hit a key to "detect" drives,  but this BIOS has no option for that.  Everything it "Auto".
Any help would be appreciated

    Problems with DVD Player in G4/466
    Yes, I've a g4/466 with two disks. In the first there's system 9.2.2 and the DVD player goes perfect. In the second I've system 10.2 and the 9.2, and the DVD Player (3.0.1) on the system 10 begins to jump in the dock, but stop and nothing happens, I can't open it...
    There's any way to reinstal it form system disks???
    Or any download to check the error?
    Thanks

    1. Try using Pacifist to extract it from your Mac OS X 10.2 installation disks, and then run the combo updater for your version of Mac OS X and any applicable DVD Player updates.
    2. Open the Console application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and look for lines relating to the DVD Player.

  • Has anybody had problems with DVD's burnt with Optiarc drive

    I am burning movie DVD's through iDVD. The movie formats are initially QT with PCM sound encoding. They seem to work well on an old Samsung DVD player, but stutter on a brand new Samsung computer. I do understand it could be a problem with the newer computer, but I would like to hear if anyone else has had any problems so I can see if the problem is more widespread.

    I too am having trouble playing DVDs burned with my Optiarc drive. Sorry I don't have the solution, but I can add a data point to the story about problems with DVDs burned with Optiarc.
    My current hardware: mid-2007 24" iMac, built-in Optiarc DVD RW AD-5630A with firmware 1AHM / MMC-3.
    My scenario: after making home movies with iMovie '08 and iDVD '08, I either burn to DVD (TDK 16x DVD-R 4.7 GB) straight from iDVD or I save as disc image from iDVD and then burn the disc image from Toast 9. In either scenario, I can play the DVD on my iMac or any other Mac or Windows computer. However, it will not play on my Xbox (original Xbox, not the 360) because it freezes when trying to mount (sometimes the Xbox will not recognize the disc as a DVD, and sometimes it will begin mounting the disc and then freeze before displaying the title menu).
    Before I bought my new iMac, I had the same workflow on an older 2003 17" G4 iMac that has a Sony DVD burner, and those discs play fine on all DVD players including my Xbox. To test the hypothesis that something happened to my Xbox around the time that I upgraded to my mid-2007 24" iMac, I burned several DVDs using my older iMac, and they continue to mount and play fine on the Xbox. On both my older and newer iMac, I have Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installed, same version of Toast 9, and I burn at the slowest speed (2x) on both. So it seems that the problem can be isolated to the Optiarc DVD burner, but I'm not sure if there are other factors at play here.
    I searched the Optiarc site (www.sonynec-optiarc.com) but could not find a firmware update for the AD-5630A. However, I did find this site via Google:
    Liggy's and Dee's modified NEC and Optiarc firmwares
    http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/Optiarc-AD-5630A/
    Because I was not sure about the site's reputation or validity of the firmware, I have not tried it yet.

  • Problem with DVD Player

    I inherited this computer and have spent the last couple of months upgrading it. Put a gig of ram in and added a PCI card to help with a multi screen setup but now I have hit my first major head ache. I bought a Pioneer DVR - 104 off of ebay and installed it no problem. The only issue is once I went to test out my dvd feature I found I had no DVD player. I tried updating the system but it would not install it. So I finally was able to get 3.1 off of this site and it won't start up. It just blinks on the dock once and dissapears. I checked the specs and this machine came with the superdrive but my father opted out of it, why I don't know, so there should be no issues with the hardware, can anyone help me on this?

    Hi-
    I'm sorry the extras is in OS 10.4- my mistake. In OS 10.3, I believe the DVD player is in the main package. I couldn't find it to install seperately. So.......
    Let me recap-
    1- The DVR reads install discs
    2- DVD's won't play because DVD player does not run
    3- DVD-R discs show no response
    So-
    1- The DVR is reading
    2- The version of DVD player may not be compatible
    3- There is no burn support
    To check burn support, in System Profiler, check if under Burn Support "Yes" is showing.
    My current thinking is, that since there was no DVR in the origional configuration, you may need to reinstall (Archive and install) the OS 10.3 to get the proper DVD player installed. this should also configure burn support.
    The other way to get burn support is to use the patchburn that I gave you the link to.
    BUT, I think you should do things one at a time. My advice is to first get the DVR to read, play and burn in that order. There is obviously a problem with DVD player, so, unless some else can advise differently, I would try the Archive and Install of the OS 10.3.
    It may also be good to run the OS 10.3.9 Combined Update:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html
    trying the combined update now wouldn't hurt. If it does not remedy the situation, try the Archive and Install, then update.
    Best-

  • CS4 Design Premium Installation Problem with DVDs

    Hey,
    I just bought the student Edition of the CS4 Desgin premium package.
    Have Windows XP SP3
    Anyway I put in the first DVD...and it loads...and loads....and loads...like half an hour.
    Nothing...cant open via explorer as well.
    So I restart with Dvd in the drive. restart took a bit longer but now I can acces via explorer.
    I start installation...works fine...put in Dvd2...works fine...Put in dvd3...loads...loads....loads...
    just for fun I put in dvd"Content"....loads...loads....loads.
    Ok so now I'm right in the middle of the installation...so cant just restart
    (I did try later after aborting Installation: then I can read em like dvd1)
    Now I have just installed half....with conent of dvd3-"content" missing
    I tested 25 other dvds I had laying around...all starting within the sec I entered em, so dvd drive seems fine.
    Cant remember how see specs at moment...but lets just say I can play "Crysis" on High smoothly
    It would maybe work if I could somehow install the content of dvd3 and dvd"Content" seperatley?
    (do I need dvd "content"?)
    Or how about If i create images of em and then mount em...think that would work (know a good free program?)?
    would appreciate some help

    I strongly suspect a bad production run of Adobe DVDs - I had enormous problems (see previous thread somewhere in this forum) attempting to install my Student Version Design Premium from the DVDs which Adobe sent me.  I then had absolutely no help from their telephone support.  I then had similarly no help from their online support portal - and, in fact, got really mad at them about it all.  I spent days trying to sort it out.  This message board - and one guru in particular - was very supportive and patient.
    My solution: I downloaded the trial version of the Creative Suite I had bought, installed from that (fast, easy, no problems at all) and then used the product key from the DVDs I had bought direct from Adobe.  So, I had to spend three days downloading (very slow broadband here) but it did, at least, get me a working copy.
    I wish Adobe would own up to sending out duff DVDs - but when I asked them (about the second question I asked in my first phone call) I was told that it was so unlikely that she (tech support woman) wanted me to try (all manner of ridiculous) other things first.

  • UDMA problem with DVD player

    Hello,
    I have a problem with my new MSI DVD player(model MS-8216M) :it will not work in UDMA mode 2 as it is supposed to in any normal, acceptable configuration. When I connect it as a secondary master or slave it works at multiword2 or PIO and will not go higher. It will only work in UDMA mode 2 if I connect it through my harddrive (but drops back down to PIO after a while)or when it is a Primary slave and my HDD is a Secondary Master (but also goes back to PIO after a while).
    Here's what I have already tried:
    Removing the secondary IDE channel in device manager, reboot and let windows auto-detect. Bought a new IDE cable. Re-installed windows twice since i bought it (Not upgrade).Tried various Master/Slave and IDE combinations (and always changed jumpers correctly).
    Could someone please shed some light on this annoying
    problem? I exchanged this drive twice already so I don't think that the MSI is at fault. Is it my motherboard? Please help.
    Thank you

  • Problems with DVD created in iDVD

    I have a project I put together using Final Cut Express and Logic Pro. I created the DVD project using iDVD, and am having problems with the disks that I burn - they hang part-way through on various devices (after multiple burns).
    I then saved the image to an .IMG file and tried to burn it on 2 different computers using different media (DVD+R and DVD-R) and at different burn speeds through Disk Manager. The disk burns ok, but fails validation with the message "Unable to burn ... (Verification of the burn failed.)"
    When I mount the image on my local hard drive and play it through DVD Player, I experience no problems. This is really, really strange.

    Nope. Can't do it that way. Much better to do a fresh install to each mac......or Unless you made a bootable clone of your existing HD with CCC or SuperDuper on a like mac system. Did you do this?
    In other words, to clone an existing HD you'd have to format the ext. HD to mac os extended and then move the ext. HD to a similar mac from which you would boot you mac from like this:

    Hope this helps but if not just comer on back.

  • Problems with DVD, IPhoto,etc.

    I cant play DVDs and I cannot install software for my digital camera which is on a CD. Is this a problem with the CD drive? I have only had this IMAC for a few months. These things shouldnt be happening. And is there more qualified people that I can talk to. I appreciate the help anyone can offer but if I am going to pay $1700 for this computer then it needs to work for more than a summer! Help!

    Hey croth75.
    It very well could be a hardware problem but let's try a little maintenance first.
    Open Disk Utility and do a Repair Permissions.
    This has worked for me before it similar situations but it is not a cure all.
    After you Repair Permissions you might try a restart.
    If you are still having problems, try inserting the install disk and restart while holding down the 'C' key. I know this may not be possible for you as you are having disk related problems, but maybe.
    After you start up from the install disk, locate Disk Utility from one of the top menu tabs and do a Repair Disk.
    After it is done, restart and see what you get.
    I hope some of this helps.

  • HP Pavilion DVD-3013eo recovery problem with dvd`s Win 7 x64

    Hi, i have a problem with my dv7-3013eo pavilion, recovery dvd just wont work, they are original but here's the problem:
    in recovery pavilion says something like this on start recovery program is not compatible of this version of windows, but it proceed, then it Boot's then the installation stars and then uiadump32exe crashes, and pavilion says start recovery again? that shall i do?
    My windows version is WIndows 7 x64 Home, and computer is broken. dvd are fine and this is first time i have to use them.

    Hi:
    I don't have an answer for you, but I have a workaround if you can't get the recovery disks to work.
    You will only have the option of installing the English, French or Spanish version of W7 Home Premium 64 bit.
    If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to DVD's for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
    Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
    Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
    The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
    Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
    Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/
    Now, instead of burning these to a DVD, use the Windows 7 USB flash drive installation tool available at the link below and follow the instructions on the page to install.
    You will need a 4 GB flash drive or larger.

  • Problem with DVDs (X-

    I think I also have a bad card. Does this sound like one?Anytime I insert a DVD my computer will BSOD. THis started right when I got my X-FI in May. I have ruled out everything in my computer from being the cluprit except this. I have the latest bios from ASUS (A8n sli-premium, rev. 009, I think). I'm going to remove the card and see if it works.So, do you all think this is a problem with my X-FI, or is it something else.Message Edited by Catherina-CL on 09-05-2006 09:40 AM

    festivus528,
    Is it a DVD-Audio or DVD-Video disc? Do you have any firewall software(brand?) installed in your computer as I remember reading from some past forum user posts mentioning of similar problem with some firewall software when using with DVD-Audio. I think is Kerio firewall.

  • How to reset the BIOS to solve a problem with DVD burner on Satellite P100

    Hi
    I am trying to reset my cmos to solve a problem with my dvd burner.
    I was trying to run an old game that I own that was protected by starforce and ran starforce nightmare with has made the device completly inoperable.
    After much searching I have heard to reset cmos.
    I have treid through debug and nothing happend. I don't really want to open up the laptop and pull the cmos battery out or leave it for a month until the cmos battery runs out.
    Is there any advice on what I should do.

    Hi
    What you want to do is simply not possible you said that you had some problems with PCs and you fixed it.
    That's great. But a PC is simply different and cannot be compared with the notebook
    > I was trying to run an old game that I own that was protected by starforce and ran starforce nightmare with has made the device completely inoperable.
    According to your statement above you CD/DVD drive issue could be related to the installed starforce nightmare. I dont know this but I presume this software/application has changed or destroyed the CD/DVD drives firmware.
    Sorry but I see only one way to get it working again You have to contact the ASP in your country. Maybe a technician would be able to rescue the drive
    PS: your Satellite P100 PSPA6A series seems to be a Australian series therefore you should use the Toshiba Australian page if you need some drivers or BIOS

  • Problems with ImageIO.write()

    Well I am finding it very strange with ImageIO.write();
    Consider the following code snippet:
    BufferedImage img=ImageIO.read(new File("fw2.jpg"));
    BufferedImage img1=new BufferedImage(img.getWidth(),img.getHeight(),img.TYPE_INT_ARGB);
    for(int i=0;i<img.getHeight();i++)
    for(int j=0;j<img.getWidth();j++)
    img1.setRGB(j,i,img.getRGB(j,i));
    ImageIO.write(img1,"jpg",new File("fwinv.jpg"));
    So simply I am copying fw2.jpg to fwinv.jpg. fw2.jpg was also created
    using ImageIO.write().
    But the two files are having different pixel values.
    i.e If I read fwinv.jpg again I will get different pixel value that it was written.
    Why is this...Can any one please help me..

    Reading the written images back and displaying them in java works okay. The third image looks okay in RGB but wrong in ARGB when displayed by a native app. For more about this see reply 1 in Color problems and the linked bug report: Some Images written using JPEG Image Writer are not recognized by native applns.

    hmmm. okay, i think you should start a new thread over in the "Importing and Burning" forum where the people with experience with that error message spend more of their time.
    in that post, include your error message and make and model of CD again. also go into itunes go "help > run CD diagnostics, and paste all the results of that into the new thread.
