Problems with effects being lost between motion and final cut?

Hi I have an older version of motion, I am editing a video for my course and I have made some motion graphics with some blurs and fades etc (just this kids of effect, nothing else), when they are imported into final cut they disapear all i have is static text or graphics that crawl across the screen...
Is this a bug?
If I let software update do its job would these problems go away.
Just so you know Final cut 5.1.4 and Motion 2.0.1

Great fix....I started a compression to NTSC and it should be done in 3 hours, I will then boot up FCP, chose a 1 minute clip...follow your directions to the T. and compare the results....I did have this solved when I used NTSC 4:3 before; however, when I chose the menu with the mpeg2 codec, I thought that it would be faster....

Is there a way to run Motion and Final Cut Pro on Separate Machines?

Is there a way to run Motion and Final Cut Pro from the same Final Cut Studio license on separate machines? We hadn't realised when we bought Final Cut Studio that it wouldn't allow this. Our editor doesn't use motion, and while I mainly use After Effects on our motion graphics machine, I was wanting to try using motion for some particle effects. Unfortunately, it won't let me open it while Final Cut is running on our editor's machine. I can understand not letting two copies of same application run under the same serial number at the same time, but it would be nice to be able to use both programs that we own concurrently. At very least it would be good to warn you that this isn't possible in the product description, not in some fine print license agreement once you have already bought the software.

I do not know of any software, in any platform that can operate from the same license over a network simultaneously.This is the exact reason for the existence of Volume Licensing. If for example a project ran in each one of the included applications from different sources that were not an active network, I doubt you would have a problem.Like, doing a project at work and geting the outcome with the Powerbook at home...Sorta!

What are the similarities and differences between iMovie and Final Cut Pro

I have become semi-proficient in iMovie and considering upgrading to Final Cut Pro. I would love to hear from anyone with informatoin pertaining to the learning curve, and the similarities & differences between iMovie and Final Cut Pro.

Compatibility between FCP and Final Cut Express

I'm getting ready to edit a project and I was wondering if there are any compatibility issues with Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro. I've never used Express put I assume I would be able to make cuts, simple effects and titles. Is this correct.
If I transfer project files from one platform to the other will i run into any issues?

Final Cut Express is very similar to Pro. The limitations are primarily the limited range of video formats that FCE works with.
You can import a FCE project into FCP. It doesn't work the other way round.

Problem with Internet connection sharing between eMac and Powerbook G3

Hi,
I seem to be having a slight problem with internet connection sharing.
My eMac is the main machine with the internet connection, and its running 10.4.6, the Powerbook G3 is running 10.2.8.
I can connect them all up and get online with both, but I the problem I am having is when I turn the Firewall on on the eMac, the powerbook can't connect.
Is there anyway I can keep the Firewall enabled and still use internet connection sharing?

How do I know which ports the Powerbook is using?
Also I had web sharing enabled on the eMac and it made no difference at all.
Plus I don't know if this means anything to you, trying to decipher it myself, all I can make out myself on there is port 80.

Motion and Final Cut Pro Problem

I recently updated my computer and went with the new Quad-Core Mac. I had to reload the Final Cut Pro Studio software, and I've got a problem that is vexing me to no end.
I can import a Motion template (one that I've designed and even the Apple produced templates), but I try to view it in Viewer or when I place the Motion template on the timeline it won't work. Nothing visible on either the Viewer or the Canvas when I try to playback. I can right click and open the template in Motion and have the elements appear and work properly, but nada once it comes back into Final Cut.
What gives?

I find the roundtrip to Motion to be less than useful when there are a lot of layers involved. What works better for me is to export a movie using the same settings you're using in FCP and then import that. If the settings in Motion match the FCP settings, no rendering should be required. Unfortunately, you can't then use the "open in editor" function to fix anything... but must reopen the Motion project and export again.

How can I create transparent animated text with Motion and Final Cut Pro?

I am trying to replicate an effect that a previous video editor did in a project, but I can't contact them.
They made animated text in Live Type, and saved it as a QT movie. When this text is placed over existing video in the FCP project, the text is "transparent", basically it acts like text created in FCP (You can see the background image behind the text, like through the middle of the letter "o").
I have made some animated text in Motion, but when I save it as a QT movie, and bring it into FCP, the whole 1280x720 screen is covered by this movie, and I have to crop it so it does not cover the background image. It is all black except for the text. And of course the text is not on a transparent layer. Any ideas how I can create this effect with animated text? I've tried messing with transparency and overlay settings, nothing seems to work.
Running latest version of Final Cut Studio...

Just bring the Motion (.motn) project into FCP and lay it over your clip.
The QT you're exporting has to carry the alpha channel (animation codec, million+ colors), but don't waste your time/disk space with that. Just bring the motion project into FCP.

Motion and Final Cut render glitch

I am having a problem with renders, The Problem seems to be in Final Cut and Motion. Usually when I bring .motn in to my Final cut sequence, though some times the glitches happen in Motion as well. When I rerender, the glitches will usually appear in a different location than the first render.

In the olden day, when SCSI was the drive protocol, render glitches that occurred in different places on every render were usually caused by bad connections between the drives or between the drives and the computer.
Render glitches that happen in the same place each time are almost always caused by errors in the media files. Sometimes they are invisible until an application like Motion or After Effects tries to use them.

Motion and Final Cut timeline audio

Working on a long Motion/Final Cut project for the first time. Started off with a ten minute long screen recording of my narrator recording a keynote presentation. Brought that video into Final Cut and have been sending chunk after chunk into Motion to create the actual graphics, all of which are heavily matched up to the sound.
Now, (of course!) the narrator wants to rerecord almost all of his dialog. In tests, if I place a new audio in the Final Cut timeline (along with the Motion clips), there's no way for me to tell the Motion file to use the updated audio - if I link the Motion clip and new audio in the Timeline, then edit the Motion clip in Motion, it still references the original audio. Is there a simple way I can tell Motion to use the updated audio instead, or (what I fear is the case) am I stuck with having to manually dump each edit audio clip directly back into the individual motion file? Because my video is heavily audio-timed, I need to have the audio in the Motion file.

this sort of thing happens all the time. Of course you really have to lock down the audio before spending too much time on the pictures, but even with the best intentions it happens.
You could try to edit the v/o in fcp against the preexisting pictures first, to try and get it to work better. But then your only option is to send audio to the motion projects.
Its too late now but it might be useful to think about in the future. Rather than sending clips to motion, i export it frrom fcp, could be audio, could be pictures, could be both. I bring that clip into a motion project and work on it. If it needs updating, I re-exeport from fcp and relink the media in the motion file.

Setting for both, Motion and Final Cut - Anamorphic?

The settings dialogue in final cut somewhat differs from the one in motion regarding the pixel format. In FCP the pixel format can be 'square' AND anamorphic 16:9. In Motion when a pixel ratio other than one is entered (1.77 for 16:9) the pixel format box changed to 'eigene' - that reads probably other in english.
Now: only when I use square and anamorphic 16:9 in FCP and square | 1 in Motion, the aspect ration is preserved in FCP, but on the right and left side of the Motion Clip there is some space left. When I deactivate the anamorphic Setting in FCP, the clip fills the canvas but is distorted.
My resolution is 1920 x 1080.

If your resolution is truly 1920x1080 (that is to say, you're not working with HDV for another format that really uses 1440x1080), then you want square pixels all the way. Uncheck FCP's anamorphic setting.

Ati HD 2600 XT man enough for the job? Motion and Final cut

Hi all, just got my new 2008 Mac Pro with a ATI HD 2600 XT graphics card
I have a dell 24"monitoer running at 1920x1200 pixels
I am just about to buy the final cut studio package and I'm wondering if I need to spring for the 8800GT card?
so my question is: just how taxing on the gpu is Motion? is the Ati HD 2600 XT man enough for the job running at 1920x1200 pixels?

Rob Morgan at Barefeats.com has some benchmarks that compare the 2600 XT to the 1900 XT in a 2.8 8 core machine. In his test the 2600 XT was only a hair slower with Motion. I have not noticed any performance hit with the 2600 XT. I plan on sticking with the 2600 XT.

Problems with Boris Title 3D (Imbedded Software in Final Cut Express 2.0)

Thanks for all your help on my previous problem...I have run into another though.
As I mentioned before, I recently upgrade to OS X Tiger. I am running FInal Cut Express 2.0, as my editing software. (The following problem was not an issue before I upgraded.) Whenever I try to edit or creat on Title 3D graphic, which used the Boris Title 3D software, the software opens, but the editor does not, and therefore I cannot edit or create any graphics using this software.
If you have any ideas on a solution, please let me know!

No longer have FCE 2.0

Potential conflict between iChat and Final Cut Express HD

Looking for some tips: can't install iChat properly on my Mac... the installers mentions some "errors" and ask for retry; the same over and over.
Could there be a conflict with Final Cut Express? or other programs?
Any thoughts on how to go around this? i don't need to use both programs at once.

Problems with Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro

After about two weeks of using the Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro, I've found some clips are cut short when they are transcoded to Prores and appear in the browser. Has anyone else had this happen?

Yes, just started using this and noticed pretty soon afterwards. Seems to happen when I start clicking around or doing anything that uses the processor more than just surfing the web, but that's just anecdotal. I immediately stopped and started using MPEG Streamclip, but I really want the timecode.
Most recently, I had Log and Transfer open, transcoding some 7D footage, and a few of the clips didn't come in—they were left with the red stop-sign symbol/exclamation point. When I clicked to "retry," it stopped importing the current clip and started on the clip I retried. I clicked "retry" on another unimported clip, and again, the clip import stopped and the new clip began processing. I let it go through and, after the checking the footage, I discovered it had been incorrectly named the first clip's filename! Needless to say, I hand-checked every file to make sure it was the right duration (a few weren't), deleted the files from the Capture Scratch folder, and reimported—making sure I didn't touch the computer.
I hope they fix this bug, whatever it is.
BTW, I've experienced it on two separate Mac Pros.

Session is being lost between GET and POST

My application is being developed in Tomcat 4.1.18.
I have a servlet that acts as a Controller and JSP's that make up the View. Basically, the session gets lost in the following manner:
The application's web.xml file is set with Authentication method of Unspecified. Basically, it's not a high security application, we just need to make sure that the user maintains a session throughout the application.
User is presented with a page (login.jsp). They present their credentials. The controller does an include (RequestDispatcher.include) on a jsp (this jsp simply does a setProperty *) to fill the bean. Then, the controller passes control (through RequestDispatcher.forward) to the Action servlet. The Action does some processing and forwards to the next destination. Next, the user clicks on a link (GET) (this causes the URL to be rewritten with the correct session ID). In this particular instance, the user is presented with a form to fill out. The user fills out the form and it POSTS to the controller. At this point, the controller attempts to access the session and it is lost!

I just tried encoding the FORM ACTION and no dice. I'm pretty new to JSP's so I'm wondering if its something stupid that I'm doing (or not). I've never had this problem using straight servlets before.
It would be hard for me to justify getting rid of the JSP's and going with a straight servlet solution.
I'm also wondering if my Authentication:Unspecified in the web.xml file has anything to do with my current troubles.
