Problems with FCP and Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT video card

Not sure if this should be in the MacBook Pro forum or this one...
I am having trouble with the GeForce 8600M GT video card while editing in final cut pro (and after effects). I have talked with numerous people at applecare, but they say that they are unaware of issues regarding the video card.
The problem: It's almost like the card is unable to keep up with professional video applications. Whenever there is movement in the video I'm editing, I get lines across the screen. Not sure to how better to explain it than to say it looks like the video card is having a tough time refreshing. (I can take the same video to a much older power book, and it plays perfectly, so its not the source file.)
At first I thought it was an FCP issue, but I just started using after effects, and I'm having the same problem in there. If I edit in after effects, when I play it back (in after effects), I get the lines. I can then export the project to a quicktime file. The quicktime file plays perfectly (no lines) when not involved with a professional application. Then if I import the same quicktime file into FCP and play it back in FCP, the lines happen again.
Is anyone esle having this problem? Any thoughts? Any solutions?
Thanks!
Michael

I had searched the macbook pro forum, but not this one. It seems that the "screen tearing" issue has been talked about a lot, so I apologize for the repetitive nature of the post. I will say that I am fairly shocked that given how many people have clearly called applecare, no one there seems to have a clue that there is a problem with this video card. I have talked with at least 4 different people in the FCP specialty group, and not one had any clue what I was talking about... 3 of the 4 were fairly insistent that it was a video source issue on my side.

  • DVI to Component video w/ MacBook Pro and NVIDIA GeForce 8600M card...

I just got a new MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M video card. On the NVIDIA website for the card, it states:
"Integrated HDTV encoder provides analog TV-output (Component/Composite/S-Video) up to 1080i/1080p resolution".
I have a Sony HDTV that only has component video (Y Pr Pb) inputs (the red/green/blue inputs). It is capable of HD up to 1080i.
If the NVIDIA card does output an analog TV (Component) signal, it should work. However, when I went to the place that sells the DVI-to-Component adapter, I got some bad news:
    See it here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E8V0YI/ref=pdluc_sbs_0202
I wrote a question to the Sewell folks about this product and asked this:
Will this work with the dual link DVI-I port on my macbook pro? Graphics card info: Nvidia 8600 GT 256MB of GDDR3 memory Here is the link to the card's site: http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8600.html
    They answered:
Unfortunately this will not work. While the GPU may support the function, the Mac Version of the cards do not implement the component signal.
I think they are still thinking about the older MacBooks that use the ATI chipset and don't know about the new NVIDIA cards.
Is component really not implemented in the new MacBook Pros?
I have the 17" model that has more VRAM than the 15" and I got the HD screen upgrade.
Does anyone know any solution that will work with the MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA chipset? As I said, I'm trying to output an HD signal from the DVI port on the MacBook Pro to component video input on my HD television.
    Thanks for the help.

Sorry, the website for the Sewell adapter is here:

  • Problem with Matrox Mini, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570, Premiere 5.5.2 and After Effects CS5.5

    Hello,
We have a couple video workstation PC's in our office.
Premiere and After Effects have been crashing lately with increasing frequency - about every two minutes now.
    Here is the setup:
    Hardware
Matrox Mini - Matrox Utility release 5.5.1
Nvidia GeForce GTX 570 - Driver release 275.33
Intel Xeon X5660 2.8 GHz processors
    24 GB Ram
    Software
    Adobe CS5.5, specifically...
    After Effects 10.5.0.253
    Premiere 5.5.2
    Windows 7 64-bit
We have two 21" LCD monitors in dual display running from the computer, and the Matrox Mini outputs a preview signal to a 15" CRT.
The crashes occur when I have After Effects and Premiere open at the same time. I am editing in a Matrox 720p29.97 timeline in Premiere. I imported several compositions from AE into Premiere through Dynamic Link and am matching audio with the animations in comps. When I switch back to AE to make an edit in the comp, After Effects generates a crash warning and then gives me the opportunity to save the project under a new name. After saving, it closes down completely. The Matrox WYSIWYG Control Panel in the system tray crashes during AE's crash, disabling the preview to the CRT from Premiere and AE. Since the Premiere sequence is a Matrox preset - in order to have output to the CRT - this freezes the timeline; the video and audio no longer play. When I save and then try to close Premiere, Premiere freezes and will not close without a force quit via the Task Manager.
In order to deal with this temporarily, I am editing in an AVCHD 720p30 sequence preset in Premiere, which doesn't send a preview feed to the CRT, obviously, since it's not a Matrox preset and the CRT is connected via the Matrox Mini. It's more than a minor inconvenience, since I use the CRT for color accuracy.
It is frustrating, since we did not have this problem until the recent CS5.5.2 update. We have tried changing drivers for the GTX 570 and changing the Matrox utility software to other versions, but no luck.
Is there a combination of GTX 570 drivers, Matrox software releases, and AE/Premiere settings that will make this work? I know there are "Known Issue" posts with Nvidia cards on Matrox's website, which include the GTX 570, but, again, this problem started with the Adobe CS5.5.2 update.
Any help here would be great, and I am willing to provide more information about the system and our crashes if it helps find a solution for the community, as I know this is not an isolated problem after reading Nvidia's, Matrox's, and Adobe's forums. I just can't find a hollistic solution on any of the individual manufacturer's forums.
    Thank You.
    Jordan

I've been running with Matrox for years, starting with the Axio LE. I do 75% broadcast work and find that the Matrox works very well with my kind of workflow. Monitoring is critical and since we have to deal with 3rd. party solutions, Matrox was my pick dating way back to 2006. Sure I've had frustrations with it, but I've made far more money off Matrox than frustration.
       Here's my nearly crash-free setup:
    Gigabyte GZ-X58A-OC moboard
Intel 990X (only overclocking to 4.0)
    24Gb of Kingston HyperX Ram
    GTX580 Graphics Card
    Matrox MXO2-LE w/Max
Crucial 240Gb Sata III drive (the one that has a nearly perfect score on Newegg's site)
    2 x 2Tb WD Blacks Raid 0
    2 x 1Tb WD Blacks Raid 0
Win 7 Ultimatte (it's a high-end version of Windows that's great for keying!)
    CS5.5 Suite
    Boris Red 5
    Boris Continuum Complete 8
Trapcode Shine, Form, 3d Stroke, Starglow, and Particular
    Optical Flares by Video CoPilot
The reason I list all of that software, is that it all seems to get along together, including with Matrox! So, I can't say I highly endorse Matrox because I've never tried Black Magic or running an external monitor off of my video card.
I use After Effects with all sorts of plug ins and rarely have crashes. If I put in a long day I'll have the usual crashes here and there (mainly with PremierePro), but nothing that has required evan a soft reboot of the computer.
My frustration with Matrox is mainly the delay that often comes with Adobe coming out with a new release and Matrox taking 2 or 3 months to catch up, though when Adobe went from 5 to 5.5, there was no delay at all.
I think that a lot of the people who trash Matrox probably haven't used a Matrox product in years. But before you listen to me, I must confess that I was an early adopter (and advocate) of SSDs and even today, many people on this forum think they're still a waste of money!
I'll close by simply saying that I've not left Matrox after 5+ years, but keep in mind I haven't had the bad experiences that so many others seem to have had, but again, perhaps they had those bad experiences long ago.

  • Problem with Xorg and nvidia drivers

Hi! I recently installed arch and am trying to get a gui working. Sadly I have had little success. I have a nvidia geforce 750m which I believe was designed to use optimus. I have installed nvidia and bumblebee, and blacklisted nouveau. However, when I attempt to startx it doesn't work, and in the log file it tells me nvidia can't load the GLX and to make sure I am using the nvidia vendor version. So I looked and it seems I am not, instead I have the Xorg version. Unfortunatey I have no idea how to fix this... and today, google was not my friend despite several hours of searching.
    dmesg | grep nvidia says:
    nvidia_frontend_open: minor 0, module->open() failed, error -5
I don't know what that error code means, or if that's even important.
I have also installed kde, which does nothing because there's no x server to do anything with.
    Anyone have any advice? Thanks

If I am not entirely wrong you should try to use this small piece of code:

  • When is Apple going to fix the problems with FCP and Leopard

    Apple,
    This is a nightmare.
I wish I never did the upgrade.
It's horrible that Apple released an OSX update that doesn't work with some of the most used Apple applications.
    I don't know what I should do.
Compressor doesn't work, export using Quicktime is having problems...and that's just what I've found so far.
When is Apple going to fix this mess?
    Hingefactor

Did you heed ANY of the warnings that were posted here, on LAFCPUG.org, or the CreativeCow.net? We gave many pointers on what to do before you upgrade, so that if you do run into issues with the new (and you WILL run into issues with the new OS) you could always go back to the stable version.

Apple will fix it when they fix it...that's all we can say. Keep sending in your issues and when they can, they will issue updates.
The rule of thumb is that if you have a good working edit system, don't mess with it. The machine that I use to earn a living, that is still on 10.4.9 and FCP 5.1.4. My laptop, that I use occasionally for editing, but mainly for e-mail, word processing, web surfing, that I updated. And I am testing FCP on this. So far, I am not suffering any issues.
If you backed up your system, you could have gone back to it.

  • Problems with FCP and my second display

    Hi everyone !
I'd like to use for my editing and color correction a second display. I bought the JVC DT-V24L1D monitor, and plugged it into my MBP through a matrox mxo.
When inside FCP, I cannot find a way to display the canevas into my JVC screen, it displays the whole screen i already have on my laptop. I read the manual a good hundred times, and by following what is written I just got nothing. Can please somebody help me finding a way to set FCP ? Thanks.

You are probably better off posting this in the FCP forum, where there are several Matrox MXO users, but since I'm one, I'll give it a go.
When you install the Matrox software, you should have a whole new group of easy setups in FCP using the Matrox. If you are working with standard DV footage, choose the appropriate Matrox setup; i.e., Matrox MXO DV NTSC 720x480. There are also setups for HDV, etc.
After choosing an easy setup, and starting a new project, go to the view menu, and set your external video and audio to the same settings as the easy setup, if they aren't already correct.
Using Command/F12, you can switch from your regular display on the 2nd monitor to the FCP canvas.
A couple of other things to mention: for existing projects, you can change all of the above in your sequence settings, and under the View/External Video settings.
And, in system prefs/displays, set up your external display so that it is not mirroring the desktop; then you can create a dual display window arrangement in FCP, so that when you're not using the Matrox for viewing the canvas, you can have an expanded timeline, more space for your browser, etc., etc.
You can save your custom window arrangement, and toggle between it and the Matrox canvas view with the above mentioned Command/F12.

  • Problems with FCP and System 10.5

I have found an issue that has me pulling at my hair, and I don't have that much to pull.
I repaired permissions and experienced quite a wait and it seems as though it is doing nothing but it is working so don't let that bother you I just waited it out and all was well. My big problem, after installing FCP Studio 2, it does not read my FCP projects that I had saved.
I get an error message saying: File Error: Wrong Type.
Now here is a strange thing. One and only one of my former projects will open in FCP. I really don't remember, but I believe it was the only one I made after the most recent ProApps update from Apple (Believe it was Pro Application Support 4.0.2) anyway it is the one that updated my system when I ran Software Update after installing Studio and all my other Apple programs.
I have no idea if this would cause the problem as the other projects were Not made with this latest update installed but I can't believe that it would.
Any ideas? I really need my previous projects back or I will be spending a great deal of time trying to re-create them. (that is not making me a happy camper)
    Thanks,
    Michael

I may have spoken too soon. I have a mirror image of my previous system that is bootable and I thought I could boot from that disk, open each project and save it out to the new 10.5 system disk.
I did boot back into 10.4 and brought up FCP but I got the same response from the program that I did in the new system:
    File Error:Wrong Type
Now I am at a loss...anyone have any idea and could it be the Pro Application Support 4.0.2 that I had installed?
    Help...Please
    Thanks,

  • Strange Problem with FCP and Quicktime

    Hi,
I finished an edit off yesterday and expotrted in 2 ways ones a uncompressed Quicktime movie. (I am running FCP so it's called an FCP movie) and a compressed version botth are 2' 42" long.
When I import the compressed verion back in it plays fine. When I import the uncompressed FCP/QT movie back in the time line stops and starts. The audio plays, but the video element just won't play properly. I am running QT 7. Does anyone have any thoughts why?
    cheers, Dame

    Hey Man,
We don't have a lot of luck explaining stuff to each other do we! Remember when I had problems over exporting FCP as a QT uncompressed movie. You were getting a bit shouty as you thought I wasn't listening and it turned out in FCP 3 to export as a QT uncompressed is actually called Final Cut Pro Movie in the Export Options?
Anyway, I meant I was having problems importing an uncompressed QT via a firewire on to my timeline. But in a strange backwards sort of way, by doing the complete opposite of what you suggested, you pointed me in the right direction!
Thanks for your help once again buddy.

  • ATI 4870 AND NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT together ?

hello. i have a mac pro 1.1 with the stock NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video card. I will receive a new ATI Radeon HD 4870 card today and was wondering if it was possible to have both cards installed and if this wold provide a performance boost (ie will rendering videos utilize the power of both combined etc) . Also, i would like the option of having 3 displays . So 2 questions,
    1. can i have both cards installed at once?
    2. and if yes, will it provide benefits or problems/conflicts ?
    thanks
Mac Pro 1,1 , 5GB Ram , Latest Snow Leopard , Mac 20ish" Display, and Sony Bravia 52" as display using dvi-hdmi cable .

I've run the 4870 together with the 7300gt; there were no problems whatsoever. You'll be able to run 4 monitors, other than that there are no other benefits. This is under OSX.
Note though, if you're running windows under bootcamp, with both cards installed you will likely run into driver conflicts. Best to keep to the same "clan" (ATI or Nvidia) when booting in windows.

  • GeForce FX 5200 Video Card

    Hi everyone!

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi(Bonjour)!
On Apple Support specification for original G5 20" iMac :
    http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMac_G5.html
    We can see:
"NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra with 64MB DDR SDRAM with AGP 8X support"
On Final Cut Express HD specifications page:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/specs.html
    We can see:
"An AGP or PCI Express graphics card compatible with Quartz Extreme or an Intel GMA integrated graphics processor in MacBook or Mac mini"
Quartz Extreme needs at least:spec says:
"Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video GPUs: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX and later, or any AGP-based ATI RADEON GPU. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required."
FCE HD3.5 application must be installed on your system disk to run without problem, and needs Mac OS X 10.4.6 (Tiger) to run.
So, yes, your iMac can run FCE HD 3.5 .
I Currently use FCE HD 3.0 on my other computer: an iMac G4 17"

  • MacBook Pro A1260 with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor

    Hello,
I booted my MBP 2.5Ghz Core 2 Duo this morning and was greeted with a startup chime and then a pink 'chequer board' effect on screen while the apple logo appears faintly in the background. The OS doesn't ever load because the startup sequence seems to freeze shortly after this.
I think this sounds like the infamous NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor failure
If so, am I correct in thinking Apple may still be addressing the failure, free of charge. I think it's supposed to be up to 4 years from date of purchase, but given that this macbook was discontinued in Oct 2008, and it's now sept 2012 it would make it very tight, perhaps even exceeding the cutoff, becuase I can't remember the purchase date.
Does anyone know the restrictions to this offer? Do you need the original receipt/invoice? Does the MBP need to be standard, or can it have been upgraded with SSD or 2nd Hard Drive, or anything? Are they even strict on the cutoff date? Anyone have any experience on what to expect? I'm fearing the loss of time and projects while this is being sorted out
    Thanks all.

It's a little late for me to jump into your discussion, I only read it when I posted an issue with the same model.
Well, I hope you got it fixed soon enough in 2012, because as I learned in the past few days after purchasing that model and reading up on the issues, Apple stopped the care for this fault on December 7th or so in 2012.
Seeing that people still get problems due to that graphics card, I should try to return the used one I just bought. I might run well now, but who knows how long.

All FX Plug class effects in FCP will benefit with that beefier card. Also Motion and Color will benefit. You'll see a smother preview in Motion, and faster renders in Color. In FCP, you'll see more RT playback of unrendered effects if they are the FX class effects as well. Go with the beefier card. It will only serve you down the line too. The movement in software architecture is to offload CPU cycles to GPU cycles, and will continue to go that way as far as I can see, so the beefier card will pay for itself down the line too. Do it now, and it will cost less as well.
