Problems with files and a new hard drive...

Hi there...
I have maxed out an external hard drive I was using to hold all my photos....
I have bought a 2 new drives with a view to backing up everything I have on file.
If I start moving files around LR then can not locate the files and they come up in red in the folders section of the programme.
IS there a way of reorganizing things without having to re import stuff?
Any help would be great....
Lee

I think I get it... (im having a dumb day!!)
I set the new h/d up and I import in essence an empty file into LR.
Then all the files I want to keep on the new h/d I drag and drop from the old h/d...is this right??
like I said Im having a dumb day...
all the help is much appreciated
Lee

I have all my music on an external hard drive. I just transferred all my files to a new hard drive . How do I sync all my files with my itunes library without losing all my playlists etc and keep everything intact?

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify it. If the external drive doesn't contain the iTunes database files, create a new library there and import that music.
If the library contains any rented movies, they won't play on a different computer.

I had problems with my MacBook pro's hard drive. And I have this question how can I end up getting a replacement for it like get a new one.

The recycle program makes it easier for you to trade in your old Mac and buy a new one. Apple has a partner that will take the old one and give you a gift card for the value -- if your old Mac is in pretty good condition and doen't have problems (passes the diagnostics).

  • Problem with the connection to the hard drive.

G5 Single core 1.8GHz stop working. I was told that there is a problem with the connection to the hard drive.
It boots but freezes after a few minutes and fans go full blast.....
Is this a logicboard problem, or something that can be fixed with a little work?

    Hi j hallow-
Whose diagnosis declared a bad connection?
Have you opened it up and looked inside? It may need to be cleaned out.

  • Where in file structure on new hard drive should I direct IPhoto restore from Mozy?

I have a substantial IPhoto '08 library backed up on Mozy.com.  My hard drive crashed and, after replacement by Apple, I notice I now have IPhoto '09 installed.  I know Mozy has had problems with restoring metadata associated with IPhoto (they know it, too) but after lengthy discussions with Mozy personnel they assure me all metadata will be preserved during a restore if (and only if) I use the "Restore" tab from within the Mozy backup interface, as opposed to using any of the other avaiable Mozy restore tools.  My entire IPhoto library shows up within the Mozy restore file structure as a single, very large file.  My question is this:  Where / what should I choose as the destination for the restoe on this brand-new hard drive?
Thanks to all for any help or guidance.

    Ted,
There is an iPhoto forum, I'd suggest re-posting there if no one here is able to answer your question. This forum is more a general iMac forum.

  • I cant download files onto my new hard drive

I have just got a new hard drive and I am unable to download any files from my macbook onto it. My hard drive is 1t and whenever I try to put the files on a little circle with a cross in it shows up and nothing happens. Is there anyway I could fix this? Thanks!

No idea since you give us no information except a problem
1 - does this involve iPhoto for the Mac where you posted in any way? - If so how?
2 - what format is the external hard drive (select it in the finder and right click - get info to see the format
3 - exactly what are you trying to do - Downloading is not at all  definitive as download can be done in many different ways using many different software packages

  • Moving iTunes library from a hard disk with bad sectors to new hard drive

I have tried to move my itunes library using the method proposed by Apple in the support section but it does not work because of a bad hard drive.
I change the itunes folder in preferences. I let itunes organize my music. However, when I select consolidate music everything starts OK but stops when it hits the bad sectors on the old hard drive.
I can copy the rest of the music to the new hard drive manually using finder. However, the music is not recognized in the new location only the old location.
I have tried many things including moving music to another hard drive and naming it the same as the old hard drive and then trying to consolidate it. That does not work. I have tried the method of changing the library.xml file to reflect the new folder. That does not work. I am at a stand still. I have invested much time rating the music and I do not want to lose that.
    Any suggestions?

Thank Chris I have just done that. How do I now get them in to Itunes ?
If you simply copy the iTUnes folder to /Music/ and launch iTUnes, everythign will be there. No need to import anything.
This will work the same with iPhoto.
Simply copy the Photo library to /Pictures/ folder and launch iPhoto.

  • How to move files after installing new hard drive

I am considering the installation of a new 80 or 100 GB hard drive. I purchased the new iLife 06 program but I do not have enough space to install on my present 60 GB unit. I only have 3 GB available. I've read all the posts involving the possible brands, downloaded the instructions how to swap out the units. My question is how to backup and install my files and applications so I may reinstall onto the new drive. Can I just copy my hard drive volume onto my external Lacie storage unit and then drag the volume back to the new hard drive after booting off my OS disk? Any advice on how to move my apps and files? Do I need to purchase cloning software?

The easiest way is buy an external firewire enclosure and put your new drive in it. Then format your new drive. then use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your internal drive onto your new drive. Then install your new drive and put your old one in the enclosure. You are now in business with an external backup on your old drive.

    Hi,
I 'm trying to install xp pro on a new Hard Drive and, following formatting, a RED slider went across the screen and a message;  re-starting remove any disc from drive 'A' . At that point the screen went blank and hard drive light was lit. I took the xp disc out the CD drive and re-started I now get a screen asking me to shift-tab to display network boot option menu,at which point it is frozen ! Help please

    It shuts down? Doesn't restart?
What is the difference in environment from the shop and your place?
Shutting down is normally - still - a sign of the processor turning itself off to protect itself. It's not alive long enough in BIOS, to make you see the temp?
I doubt you keep the computer in the cupboard, but it should anyway have about 50 cm free space in every direction (except downward of course).
Fredrik, The difference between home and shop, I keep the PC in a PC stand at ground level. I could improve its position slightly however, it has been sighted there for aroung eighteen months!  The shop guy didn't seem overly concerned by the 49c temp, (he thought the fan was ok) which increased to around 56c with 1.5gb ram installed. When i tried to get into bios I was probably too late hitting delete key has it went to windows scan! After the problems I'd had last week with my original hard drive I didn't want to take any more risk's! Its seems obvious the cpu temp is affected with the extra ram, any ideas?
    Thanks Pete

  • Having trouble installing and configuring new hard drive

I bought a larger (320GB) Hitachi hard drive for my T61, to replace the 100GB that came with the computer. I had no touble making the physical installation, but can't boot up and use the new drive. I:
--used Acronis software (True Image 11 and Disk Director) to partition the new drive. The new partitions are proportionately larger than on the old drive.
--copied files from my original HD to the new one.
--tried, unsuccessfully, to boot up from the new drive.
--tried Thinkvantage software, but it wouldn't (1) recognize any external drives (USB HDD or my backup drive, also an external); (2) let me change the order of my boot devices (I get a synbtax-challenged message: "All items on this menu cannot be modified in user mode...[C]onsult your system supervisor." Well, *I'm* the "system supervisor," and I still can't get the program to let me edit the boot order).
I have tried to boot the new drive from original OS software (XP Pro), with no success. Same deal with Acronis's emergency book disk. At the moment, I'm letting Thinkvantage reformat and (maybe) reinstall everything that was originally on the factory computer. Whether it'll actually do this on a new and larger hard drive, I guess I'll eventually find out. If it works, I'll then try to restore my real files with Acronis.
Has anybody else had to deal with this exciting sequence of events?
    --Fred Powledge

Lets start afresh. First do you want an XP or Vista system on your new hard drive? Do you know if the recovery disks you got with your system are for the operating system you want on the new drive?
If you bought a Vista machine with XP downgrade Vista will be preinstalled on the system and it gets delivered with XP recovery disks. The opposite can also be true the machine is delivered with XP installed and with Vista recovery disks. Iin both cases if you want to upgrade to a new hard disk on the preinstalled operating system you must first yourself burn recovery disks for the preinstalled system. Start -- All programs -- Thinkvantage -- Create Product Recovery Media, first disk must be CD the last two can be DVDs.
When you are sure you have the right set of recovery disks XP or Vista, boot from them and let them format the disk. They will automatically install the service partition and use all the remaining space of the new hard drive for the C partition. When I think about it even for Vista on the T61 there will be only two partitions C: and a hidden partition for the RnR service partition. The S and Q partitions only apply to the new T400/500 -- I should not have mentioned them.
If its the recovery disks that were delivered with the machine that are the right one for the op sys you want on the new hard drive and they dont produce a bootable system -- call Lenovo support and get new ones.
The details for Acronis I can't help you with -- I used my Windows home server backup when I restored my C: partitions on the new hard drives both on my T500 and my T42. Just be careful you dont mix up which is the old and new C: partition so you dont destroy the C. partition on the old hard disk by mistake. But as long as you don't point Acronis to the old hard disk the worst that can happen is you have to rerun the restore to factory settings on the new drive once more.
    T500: Vista 32, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 15.4" 1680x1050, 500GB 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD3650 + Intel 4500MHD. T42: XP, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 14.1" 1024x768, 250GB PATA, ATI Radeon 7500.

  • Ipod mini and a new hard drive

My old hard drive completely died, and I've had to put a new one in to my computer. I got most of my word documents on to a ZIP disk, but one of the things I was not able to save was my MP3 files. I had a bunch of mp3 files burned from my CDs, as well as a bunch downloaded from itunes and various other sources. They are all still on my ipod mini, but nowhere else. Is there any way that I can get those mp3 files off of my ipod mini and on to my new hard drive? If not, what will happen when I try to update my ipod mini with new mp3s that are on my new hard drive?
Please advise. I am very scared that I have lost my entire music collection.

    Richard,
    See this.

  • BSOD experience with CLEAN INSTALL on new hard drive...next step?

Much has been written about the BSOD experiences of those upgrading to Leopard and the conflict with third party software enhancements already on their Tiger system. And apparently those fixes are working for some. I may be in the minority, but I own a Mac Pro and have a boot drive for Tiger and a second boot drive, brand new and zeroed out, on which I installed Leopard.
When I go to start Leopard, I get either the BSOD or it will go one step further, bring me to the Leopard desktop, then hang...with a movable mouse but no functionality. In my case, since I am doing a fresh install with no Tiger software on the new hard drive, what could be causing the conflict? Has anyone else out there experienced my specific problem? And have their been any suggestions posted on a fix for this situation.
Obviously the CLEAN INSTALL experience of Leopard is not immune from the installation BSOD problems of the TIGER UPGRADERS.
I would love to hear from others experiencing these BSOD issues with their CLEAN INSTALLS and any possible workarounds.
    Many thanks,
    John

I think the issue is installing 10.5 on a different drive than the boot drive. I would recommend swapping the drives, making the 10.5 the physical boot drive and Tiger the secondary.
I have done two clean installs on two different machines with no issue. A 3rd machine was upgraded with no issues as well.
Asking other users for sob stories helps no one. Asking for resolution however, is key.

  • I had to have my computer reimaged and a new Hard Drive installed - now I cannot sync my apple products - It says that my device is attached to an itunes library already - what to do?
