Problems with HDD

I have some problems with partitioning my HDD through Boot Camp. I finished the Boot Camp Assistant when it partitioned the Hard Drive. Now, these 120 GB are not accesible! I estimated how much memory take all my files: it's 278 GB, but in the HD properties I see over 400. How can I repair the disk?

That's entirely up to you.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
AppZapper 1.6
Yank 1.31
SuperPop 1.0b2
Uninstaller 1.99
Spring Cleaning 8.0

    Hi Konyga,
If you already get a warning about internal HDD before Windows starts I would recommend exchanging it and backup all data as fast as possible.
Is your notebook still under warranty?
If yes you can get a new HDD from an authorized service provider. This would be for free because its covered by warranty. Everything what you have to do is contacting an ASP.

  • Problems with hdd, new one ?

I seem to be having some problems with my current hdd, and i was wondering if I was better off just buying a new hdd all together. It doesn't want to 'unmount' or format. I called certain Apple service centers and their diagnostics fee is $90 - About how much a new hard drive would be on it's own. Can anyone help or give feedback?

Are you talking about your internal HDD?
If so, how are you trying to unmount or reformat?
It's tough to do it to the startup disk, right?
ETA: You might just need to run Disk Utility on it - what OS are you using?

    Sava?
    did you solve this problem?
Im really sorry for making over a year to answer :bonk:but the problem is still there.I have now two hdds(the third one is not functioning with the other two ones on:worship:.I have checked my hdds one hunded times without finding a single error.I changed the PSU with a 750watt corsair but still no light .Ive learn to live with it.Whenever my pc refuses to boot(the bios  doesnt recognize the discs)i open the case and disconnect the  hd im using for storage, boot into windows, shut down the pc,reconnect the other one, boot again and voila!!!! Everything works fine for 3 to 5 days in a row until the nightmare returns.I sent the board back to the store for rma but they didnt find anythin wrong.
The only possitive is that i havent had any  "freezing" experience inside the windows for  a long time now.My pc works flawlessly with one hd so im willing to keep it till summer.

  • Help needed, possible problem with HDD

In the last few weeks, my iMac has become quite slow and tends to freeze fairly often. The other day I turned it on and was met with a kernel panic screen and could not access my desktop or any of my files. To find the source of the problem I ran an Apple Hardware Test which gave me the following error:
    4HDD/11/40000004:SATA (0,0)
After searching on the internet, I decided to boot from my OSX install disc and run Disk Utility. After verifying the disc, and repairing the disc, the scan revealed that there was no problem with the HDD. However, I was still being met with the kernel panic screen whenever I tried to turn on the computer.
After booting from the install disc again, I did an Archive and Install, which finally let me get to my desktop, however the computer was once again running slowly and after another Apple Hardware Test it resulted in the same error as above.
After more searching on the internet, I decided to remove the 3rd party RAM from my iMac and replace it with the original RAM. No success again.
More searching brought Disk Warrior to my attention. After purchasing the program, I ran the included scans and once again was given the result that there was nothing wrong with the HDD.
After this I decided to run Tech Tools Deluxe which came up with a Directory fail, even though the Disk Utility and Disk Warrior scans found no such problem.
So what procedure can I take now, I am hesitant to perform a System Restore as I do not want to lose my files, but this may be my only option.
    Please help.

Okay, I ended up installing OSX to my external HD and booted from that. Ran Disk Warrior from the external and used it to rebuild the internal HD. After the rebuild DW gave me the message that it could not replace the new directory with the old directory as there was a disk malfunction. I managed to copy all of my important data to the external.
I'm guessing that the internal needs to be replaced? I'd rather start fresh with a new one than risk this happening again anyways.
In any case thank you very much for your help, it was much appreciated .

  • 10.5.6 Problems with HDDs on AEBS

    Hi
Maybe someone can second this issue or give me a tip on how to get rid of this "feature".
Ever since upgrading to 10.5.6 (Combo install) I'm having periodic issues with my HDDs on the AEBS when waking up from sleep.
    Setup:
iMac 24" 2.4Ghz (connected to AEBS via network cable)
    AEBS (1Gbit version)
One WD 500GB MyBook USB connected to AEBS
One WD 750GB MyBook II USB connected to AEBS
    Problem:
Both WD drives have auto power-off after about 5-10 minutes. Ususally the drives wake up when the iMac comes out of sleep mode. They then go back to sleep soon after and stay dormant if not in use.
Since the 10.5.6 upgrade the iMac sometimes (every 3-5th wake-up) wakes up from sleep, starts the WD drives and then goes into a continuous cycle of waking up the drives and then shutting them down, waking them up, shutting them down...
Very soon after that the Finder hangs itself up completely. To get the iMac running again normally I have to restart the iMac (6sec power button press). Oh and I have both drives mounted when I go into the sleep mode.
Very annoying problem and definitely wasn't there at any point since I got the iMac. It also started immediately after I had installed 10.5.6.
On another note I also notice some slowdowns during normal use of the iMac but I'm still investigating this.
    Regards Oliver

A "parked" drive just means that the head assembly has moved to a parking zone not over the platter. This occurs in essentially all modern drives when the platter spins down, which almost all drives will do after some period of inactivity (no access). Some drives will do this only when the OS tells it to (for Mac OS X, via the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" option the Energy Saver system preference), others will do so according to their own internal monitoring circuits & timer even if the OS does not tell them to.
As I said earlier, the auto-off or "deep sleep" mode shuts down almost all the drive's electronics. This is not the regular sleep mode associated with a spun down drive but a more extensive energy saving feature that requires special circuitry that not all drives have. Different drive makers implement this differently -- basically, it is a proprietary feature often only present in the maker's "premium" drives. As such, it is possible that the timing & signaling involved in going into & out of this state is critical enough that it may not work as expected with an OS that expects the drive's electronics to respond immediately, even if it takes a few seconds for the drive's platter to spin up to provide data access.
Additionally, WD has added other proprietary features to some of its drives associated with power management like "Safe Shutdown." This requires a driver to be installed for the OS to support it. Third party drivers sometimes need to be revised when the OS is updated.
When I googled on the term "WD auto off" I discovered quite a few reports of power management issues (mostly the drives not going into auto-off mode at all) associated with WD drives with these "intelligent" features when used with Macs. These reports go back to well before the update was released, so it may be that your issue is not directly related to the update.
Basically, all I'm saying is that any special power management feature may cause problems related to the timing in their implementation if they are not based on industry-wide standards. It appears that WD's implementation is not 100% compatible with the update & possibly with earlier versions of the OS as well.
One way around this is to turn off the feature if that is provided for. You may also want to contact WD to see if this is a known issue with a fix, or if one is forthcoming. It is unlikely that you can do anything yourself to change the timing of either the OS or the drive's circuitry to remedy the problem.
Edit: I just checked the WD knowledgebase, searching for Leopard compatibility issues. Among others, I found A Mac Pro running OS 10.5 may freeze when a My Book Studio Edition drive goes into sleep mode.

  • K7T266pro2 Problems with HDD 160GB

    _______________________________________ ____________________________
    Merry Christmas everyone.
I bought a Samsung SP1614N and connect it to the first channel of the promise raid controler as a slave. At the master of both channels are two Seagate ST330621A harddisks connected (Stripe 0).
After flashing the bios to version 3.7 (incl. update bios raid controller) the raid controller recognize the size of the Samsung HDD correct and an array with only one harddisk was built. I installed the latest drivers version 2.00.0.34 and/or 2.00.0.25 for windows 2000.
The windows 2000 System don't show the 160 GB Harddisk in the explorer. In the drive administration window I can see the harddisk, but I can't make a partition or something else. Trying to copy the system drive (on the both Seagate harddisks) to the Samsung harddisk with norton ghost I get an error before starting.
Does anybody have the same problems or use a harddisk bigger then 137GB with this board?
    Thanks for the help!
    JoshiR

I tried to use a 160 Gb Seagate drive without success. The drive was visible in the RAID BIOS, but simply doesn't exist in the Windows XP system. It doesn't even show up in the disk manager so I can't make a partition and format it.
I've tried every combination of BIOS and drivers I have found without any luck.
Finally, I gave up and installed the disk in another system where I have the PCI version of the very same RAID controller - there it worked immediatelly.  My guess is that there's something seriously wrong with the "Lite" RAID driver.

  • Ipod Classic 6th gen problems with HDD upgrade

I have a Ipod 6th gen and left it in rain. I got a red X the next week after having it in rice.
Ordered a SD Card for the iFlash with SD card adapter. I still get the red X. Why? I formatted the 64GB SD with FAT32. I dont know what else to do. I also cleaned the HDD ribbon cable with rubbing alcohol and flipped the connections but still no avail.

disk utility is normally correct. you can try putting ipod in disk mode and control + click > get info on the ipod. see what the capacity is and it should have the 160 GB. in disk utility you can try verify disk. I would try to return the hard drive.

  • Problem with HDD footage and FCP

    Hello.
I am trying to capture video with an HDD camera. What I did is drag the video files I need onto the computer. Then I used the MPEG streamclip program to convert it to DV. However, when I import it into FCP I cant put it into the timeline without having to render it every time i move it. Because of this, I can't edit very well because all of my footage needs to be rendered. I think it is something with my settings for the project, but I cant figure out how to fix it. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

That's because you shouldn't export it from MPEG Streamclip as .DV - that is for iMovie. You should export it from MPEG Streamclip as a Quicktime Movie +with a DV codec+
    understand?

  • Re: Satellite a660 - problem with HDD!

    Hello!
When I turned on my computer this morning, first time I've heard that HDD was working very noisy. It was like buzzing and clicking, never was like that. Computer is 3 months old, bought in pc world.
Can somebody help what to do ?
    thanks

    Hello
Theoretically it could be a hardware malfunction of HDD. Everything is possible because HDD is mechanical part so you should always do a backup from time to time that you dont loose any important data.
In your case I would contact nearest authorized service provider. Explain the situation and the guys can repair your notebook under warranty, thats free for you. :)

  • Problem with dv7-6140ew - is this a processor problem ? (i7-2630qm).

    Hello all
    As I mentioned in title I have a problem with hp pavilion dv7-6140ew (i7-2630qm) Win7 64bit.
This is a brand new laptop I bought him few days ago
Of course I notified this problem to the hp support center. But they did not know what it could be.
But may someone will know where the problem is.
I would like also to ask whether this is the normal behaviour?
I have terrible interrupting (It looks similar to old problem with HDD witchout DMA) I saw, that it took place while the kernel process suddenly takes the large amount of the processor space. For instance
by the mcAffee process (the antivirus) but it takes place also with other
(eg at uninstalling of the software). But not always - There is on no rule.
I recorded the example-film with 3dmark03 (I added the music from winamp) and in 0:25 the McSvHost.exe process start - which is visible on the photo.
    Check my video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsV861xbVbw
    and the photo https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Spo2l-5sr3Y/Tpg7l8t2XII/AAAAAAAAC1s/3elBg68MWV4/s720/IMGP4330.JPG
    Bios version F.1A, 2011-07-22
    Windows 7 64bit
    Processor i7-2630qm
    4GB ram
    Radeon 6770M

Another issue, that I found, is that, If process takes suddenly large amount of processor space in each of 4 core (8 with turbo boost) the error take place. For instance mcAfee process McSvHost sometimes cause such error. But it disappear when I change colligation in task manager for this process to be used by for instance one core.
Does anybody knows what is going on and what cause it ?

  • MOVED: [Neo4-F/Venice] Problem with downclocking

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=136087.0

    I found the main problem.
I have two versions of windows:
    - xp pro sp2 integrated 01/2007
    - xp pro sp3 integrated 12/2009 performance edition, integrated all driverpacks
Because I found some problem with hdd <-> mainboard communication in smart, i tried with some other hdd and tried to create all partitions once again.
During installing xp sp3 on both hdd, i got bsod 0x7f/0x8e after decompressing driverpacks. This showed that this is not a problem with hdd. So I tried to install xp sp2 and it was working properly. Then I was installing drivers to verify which may cause problems:
    - graphic card - working
    - nforce - working
    - AMD Cool'n'Quiet - working
    - RMClock - bsods after each decrease of multiplier or voltage, cpu can work only on 9x and 1.4V
Because it is problem with Cool'n'Quiet, I guess that it may be a problem with windows sp3 because driverpacks integrates AMD CnQ drivers. So I disabled CnQ in bios and tried to install xp sp3 once again. And.. it is working !!!.
So the problem is with Cool'n'Quiet. I can't change any parameters of cpu because I get bsod each time. The best way is to disable CnQ in bios. On 1.4V and 9x it is working properly, no bsod under superpi and other cpu testing programs.
I tried also to modify cpu multiplier in bios. Each decrease cause system freeze after showing system info in table and system can't boot. It is working only on 9x.
Is it a problem with mainboard or cpu?

  • [Neo4-F/Venice] Problem with downclocking

    Hi
I have a problem with Athlon64 Venice 3000+ (1800MHz/1.4V) E3 on MSI Neo4-F mainboard. This system was working properly for ~5 years under following conditions. CPU was overclocked to 2250MHz (250MHz, 1.4V, HT 4x, DDR 208MHz). In idle it was downclocked to 5x multiplier at 1.1V using RMClock.
A few days ago Windows was giving a lot of BSOD randomly. Then I went back to basic frequency but it didn't help. I checked memory with Memtest also but there was no errors. So I decided to reinstall windows.
After Windows installation was completed everything was working. Then I installed AMD CnQ driver and RMClock. And I found the reason of BSODs. CPU works properly with 5x and 9x multiplier (several minutes in SuperPI) but system halts after changing the voltage. Down to 1.225V everything is OK but then I set 1.2V and I get BSOD immediately. CPU temp is normal (23C idle, 38 load) and all fans are working.
Why I can't lower the voltage to the factory 1.1V in idle? Is it a problem with CPU or mainboard?
