Problems with iChat after Leopard installed

When I tried to log in to iChat for the first time a box comes up saying it "unexpectedly closed" and asks me to Relaunch or Report. It has done this numerous times and never did this when I had Tiger.
Please help!

Okay, at long last I have the solution that worked for me.
I first called Apple support, which enabled me to chat with my father (both using MBP's on Leopard) as long as we were on the same network. However, when I returned home and we were on separate networks, it was a NO GO.....totally frustrating.
Today, as I read an article on Macworld about using the Firewall in Leopard, I realized that I had it set incorrectly. So, I set it to “Set access for specific services and applications” in the firewall section, then got my Dad to do the same and........wait for it......BOOM! We were FINALLY good to go. I just converted my Dad to Mac so this was a real thorn in our sides not to be able to use iChat. I'm miffed tht I couldn't get a complete answer from Apple, but ultimately I'm just glad it's up and working.
Hope this works for you all! Here's the article at Macworld I mentioned. It really helped me to understand Leopards firewall a bit more.: http://www.macworld.com/article/131116/2007/12/firewall.html

  • I am having problems with iChat after installing Lion, can anyone help?

I installed Lion this week after I installed everything seemed to be working great. However, if I open iChat and then log in and log out it will not let me log back into iChat

Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443(press return/enter(you might have to tick and untick SSL for 443 to stick)).
    Log back in again.

  • Problem with permissions after NOT installing 10.5.3

A few weeks ago when Software Update asked me if I wanted to install 10.5.3 I said no, since I wanted to wait for a while to see if there were any problems first before I went ahead with it. According to Software Update, 10.5.3 has been downloaded on my computer, but not installed, although I can't find it anywhere.
Ever since then things have been getting increasingly weird. I thought I had most of the problems solved after booting from the Leopard disk and repairing ACLs and permissions. However, after I shut my computer down for the night, and rebooted the next morning, all my problems were back and a few new ones. Now I have to log in each time I reboot the computer. I have to log in each time I open Mail. I can't unlock anything. I click the lock and nothing happens. Time Machine has stopped working again and is no longer backing up my data. When I click on "Get Info" for my HDs or apps, Sharing and Permissions says I have custom access - all the rest is greyed out, and I can't unlock anything. I seem to have lost permission to make any changes! Very frustrating!
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, I can access the Time Machine application.
Following up on your previous suggestion, even though I'm listed as admin in the Accounts pane, I thought it was worth a shot, so I followed the steps set out in the Apple article TS1278: "Mac OS X 10.5: Administrator user changes to standard".
After booting from my Install DVD, and resetting the password for the System Administrator (root), I restarted from my Mac, selected "Other" in the login window, and tried to log in as System Administrator (root) with the password I'd chosen, but it wouldn't log me in. All that happened was the login window trembled a bit, then cleared, and that was that. I tried a number of times, with the same result. Do you have any idea what I can do to correct that? Because it sounded like the process described in this article could very well fix my permissions problems.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Problems with games after leopard upgrade

After i upgraded to leopard iv been having trouble with some games (like bf 2142), they wont open, as soon as i click on the game it quits right away, anyone having this problem too? or anyone have any solutions??

    Good morning Mogens Pedersen
    Thanks for using our forum
I am a Cisco network support engineer, I have a recommendation, before you  upgrade any device in the future. Always keep in mind to make a backup of your data, in this way if you have to reset the device to factory settings you will not lose that information. Having said that, reset the router to the fabric configuration using the back little button, remember when you do that, you are going to loose your current configuration.
Also here I leave a link for you to download the firmware rescue utility for your router:

  • Specific Problem With iChat 4 (Leopard)

Just tried video chatting and screen sharing with a friend, both ways, multiple times. We are both .mac and both using intel iMacs in the same city with the same provider. When I invite him I receive a message that he has cancelled the invitation. On his end it says there was a communication error. Same thing when we try it the other way 'round. I do not use iChat normally but was curious with the new features. Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

I have the same issue that's been introduced by Leopard. I've upgraded one machine in the house, my Core Duo 17" MacBook Pro, to Leopard. Once we started testing out iChat, we found that we couldn't start a video chat with the machine running Leopard/iChat 4. The Leopard machine repeatedly gets the "did not receive a response" communication error.
I don't think I can blame this on ports or router configuration or anything else. All machines are connecting through an Airport Extreme base station; I've tried to connect to the MBP with one machine that's also wireless and with one machine that's plugged into the base station.
The other two machines, a Power Mac G5 and a MacBook both running the latest Tiger update, can video chat with each other fine. And the MBP connected happily prior to Leopard.
The G5 is using an AIM login while the MB is logged in via .Mac. I normally use an AIM login on the MBP, but have also tried logging in via .Mac and creating a video chat using Bonjour.
iChat has always had occasional connection problems like this but those were easily solved by one or both parties logging off and back into iChat. That's not working in this case. I was looking forward to checking out the effects and other cool features in iChat 4. So far it's been nothing but a big disappointment.

  • Problem with iLife, after re-installing OS X

I bought a Black MacBook back in March, right out of the box it came with all of the iLife software pre-loaded on it. When the new MacBooks came out, I decided that I wanted to get one of them, so I had intended to sell my BlackBook to a friend. Because I wanted it to seem as if it were brand new to him, I wiped the hard drive of all my stuff, and than attempted to re-install the operating system disks that came with it. All went smoothly with the install, except iLife. It is as if none of the applications were loaded on the computer. My friend is very interested in using garage band, and iMovie, so this is somewhat of a problem. Any help or advice anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

I was afraid of that... When I was gathering up all the box and cables and stuff, I found an empty disk sleeve, and I was afraid that might have been what it was. Do you have any idea if apple would send another one?
I'm practically kicking myself right now. I NEVER lose software/paperwork for my electronics... untill now that is.

  • Screen problems with 540c after fresh install of 7.5.3

I'm trying to get my Powerbook 540c ready to eBay before I go overseas to teach English. I did a Clean Install of 7.5.3 that I downloaded off Apple's website, and foolishly deleted my old System Folder along with the rest of my files before restarting the system. This morning I start the system up for the first time since the install and the LCD screen is acting wonky. There are transparent blue lines at random places on the screen (the "View" menu in the Finder is in blue, for example, and a blue line appears across the screen when I select a menu).
Is it possible this is because my system is now lacking one or more extensions it needs to operate properly? Or did my screen just pick this moment to develop a physical malfunction?
    Thanks!

All the necessary extensions for a PowerBook 540c would have been installed by the downloaded System 7.5.3 software (with the possible exception of a computer with a third-party PowerPC upgrade).
What you describe sounds like a hardware problem (for instance, an internal screen cable or connector). Before attempting to open the PowerBook, you may want to try to reset the Power Manager and the PRAM (although it probably will not help).

  • Problem with downloading after clean install

Since doing a clean reinstall of my Lion system, I'm having problems downloading some of the small Apps that I use.
In Safari, I get a message saying there's not enough space on my HD - and on Chrome, I get a 'Canceled' message.
I've repaired permissions - no difference.
Strangely, sometimes the download works (with Safari) even though it gives the free space error.
(There is over 359 GB of space on my HD).
    Andy

    Hi ...
    Go to ~/LIbrary/Safari
Move the Downloads.plist file from the Safari folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac... try a download.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For Lion:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

  • Problems with Mail after Lion Install

When I opened mail and it went through it's upgrade, now I have a duplicate mail box for everythign that was in mail.
    Anyone know why that is?
Also when I click on an Excel attachment in a mail message, it would show it opened it but I could not find the window.  If I clicked on excel icon, at the top was the excel menu.  I went to window and it showed it open 2 or 3 times, but I could not get the window to come up.  I checked all the desktops and it was not there.  I had to force quit excel and open it first then click on the email attachment to be able to see it.  Any suggestions on this?
    Thanks
    Chuck

Try to rebuild your mailbox, it could help: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/2.0/en/ml1136.html

  • Problems with iChat 4.0.2 / Leopard / BT HomeHub

I have a .Mac account and iChat 4 on a iMac running Leopard 10.5.2 and using A BT Home Hub for my internet connection. I am able to have a video chat with my wife who has a Powerbook / Leopard / iChat 4 set up in our house, both using the BT Home Hub. But when I try to set up a video chat with my friend in Copenhagen who has a .Mac account and a Powerbook running Leopard it won't let us connect. It will let us have a text only chat.
I have read various posts on this subject and changed the firewall to let iChat in, changed the Quicktime streaming to 1.5 Mbps and changed the port in iChat server settings to 443.
Has anyone else any ideas, I am thinking maybe the Home Hub is the problem as i can connect to my wife's Powerbook on our home network.

I too am having problems with iChat 4.02 on an iMac running Leopard 10.5.2 as are numerous people having different hardware/software configurations. I've tried some of the suggestions like changing the server settings to 443, and changing the firewall to let iChat in. I believe somewhere, somehow Apple or AOL have changed something that may be causing these problems. I'm not technical enough to go changing a bunch of things and hope it works.
iChat was working for me about a week or so ago using AIM. I could video chat with a MacBook running 10.5.2, a MacBook Pro running Tiger and a Dell PC. Last night when I tried using AIM and iChat i could only text. However, I could video chat using our dotmac accounts and server settings 5190. But for some reason you aren't able to do that.
At first I thought it was because I stumbled into using CUPS to get my Xerox color laser printer finally working (after getting the new iMac) by changing localhost:631 to find my printer at port 9100 (whatever all of this means). But deleting the printer didn't restore iChat.
Someone on this forum suggested that installing Safari 3.1.1 may have somehow caused the problem. Maybe they are on to something!
My most recent software updates are:

At the moment I need my printer working, more than I need iChat. But I do hope someone figures out why this isn't working!

  • Fan  problem after Leopard install

PowerMac Dual G5 - after Leopard install, fan between hard drive and optical drive revved up like the computer was going to blast off, faster and faster until I powered down by holding down the power button. Leopard seems to be working fine, but with the fan continuing to go at high speed at all times. I've tried reboot, reinstall, pull plug for a few minutes, remove CMOS battery, and zap PRAM, all to no avail. I haven't put the panel cover back on yet, and that may work, but I won't have time to mess with it for a few days and hope for some insight before I try that.Ideas?

Problem went away. Must have been a ghost in the machine.

  • Problem with iChat changing my custom away message after 30 minutes

Lately, I've been having a big problem with iChat changing any custom away message that I put up to "Away" after 30 minutes or so. Is there anything I can do to make it stop? Another issue I'm having is that sometimes when people on my buddy list change their away message, it doesn't show up on iChat unless I go offline and then sign back on. Any idea why it's doing that, and what I can do to get it to stop?
    Thanks.

  • New problem with iChat

    Good morn
I still haven resoved my previous post about connection problems with iChat, but hope to do that when I visit my dad next month. Thanks for all the advice anyway.
A new problem has emerged, and seemed to coincide with the install of Tiger 10.3 last week. Now when I try to connect to various tests sites, I get an "insufficient bandwidth" error.
Is this likely to be a problem with Tiger, as I have not changed my isp, settings or broadband type?
Or could it just be the exess load on the system over the Christmas period with all those naughty teenage boys downloading **** and playing games during the school hols?
Any suggestions and/or fixes greatfully accepted.
    Thanks
