Problems with iDVD

HI,
I wondered if anyone could help please.
I have cut my first movie in iMovie, and transferred it to iDVD to burn a DVD. THe problem is when its transferred across it gets corrupted and when played on the mac (and DVD) the picture is jumping all over the place when watched through iDVD, but when you watch it in iMovie its perfect. Cant seem to work it out and didn't know if anyone could help?
Many thanks
Andy

Hi
Try this
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
• Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
• Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
• Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iDVD.
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
I use
• Verbatim
• DVD-R (Single layer)
• Burn speed set to x1
• minimum of 25Gb free space on internal/start-up hard disk

Problem with iDVD - cannot burn DVD.
Self has a MacBook Pro, which al new software.
My problem is, when my burn a slideshow, prop process ever before burning.
Box show: Multiflexing and burning: write Lead-in, then the process stops and ejects the disc.
I have burn a Movie test – no problems.
    Self use Verbatim DVD-R
Who can help - what should I do?

How did you create the slideshow and get it in iDVD?
As a general comment try following this workflow to separate the encoding and burning processes:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

    Hi
    Can You
Go up to File Menu in iDVD - and here down to
    Save as a DiskImage
If this works - You can burn Your DVD in another way via Disk Util tool

  • Aspect Ratio Problems with iDVD

I am putting together a video presentation with video from several different sources.  I have had a whale of a time getting the video to display uniformly at the same aspect ratio.  I put all my separate clips into Quicktime Pro and set the aspect ratio to 960 X 540.  FINALLY, in Quicktime Pro I was able to assemble the full video so that ALL the footage played in 960 X 540 and looked seamless.  I thought I was in great shape.
Then......I thought I would test the video in iDVD because I need to burn about 40 copies of this presentation.  Lo and behold, iDVD takes part of the video footage and somehow changes the aspect ratio of certain footage.  Part of the video plays in a small postage stamp area in the upper left of the screen, while other segments play in full widescreen just fine.  Obviously, my aspect ratios are still messed up somehow, even though the the entire video plays in full 960 X 540 glory in Quicktime Pro.  I'm stumped.
Anybody run across this problem in iDVD before?

Wow, nobody qualified to help me with this problem?
I'm finding out, thanks to more research on my part, that iDVD does not like the aspect ratio of 960 X 540.  The only reason I used that setting is because part of of my video has an iMovie 9 "trailer" and iMovie 9's "large" export is set to 960 X 540.  The weird thing is iDVD handles segments of my video that is 960X540 just fine, but it completely bungles up the iMovie 9 trailer segment that is 960 X 540.
I have also found in further testing that iDVD does like a .move file in 853 X 480 and displays that aspect ratio in full widescreen glory.
Hopefully this information will help somebody someday avoid the headaches I have had.

  • IPhoto Media Problems with iDVD

I know there are several posts on this subject in the forum but I'm not sure I have come across a real answer.
Like other subscribers I cannot access my iPhoto libraries (I have several) in iDVD or, for that matter, iMovie. The applications are up to date and I have rebuilt the AlbumData.xml file several times.
My libraries are on an external firewire disk so they are not in the default location (i.e. user/pictures/iPhoto library). I tried to get around this problem with iPhoto Buddy but the truth is nothing is working. I can access movies and music from the media tab in iDVD just not the photos.
Drag and drop works but I was expecting iDVD to pick up the location of my iPhoto libraries.
Has anyone got a foolproof solution to this problem, please?
    Thanks & regards,

OK I have resolved this issue with help from the iPhoto Buddy support team and thought I'd document the solution in case it helps anyone else.
Basically, the library I wanted to use included an ampersand (&) in the name as well as an apostrophe. I renamed the library and removed the ampersand and the apostrophe and am now able to switch between libraries when using iPhoto Buddy.

  • A problem with iDVD, i can't make the actual DVD... not enough space

And that's odd, because the DVD is a 4.7 GB Single-sided, and i've put in the menu 5 video, for a total of 500-600 MB.
Why i can't burn it? And do you know programs to make video size smaller? Thanks.
[Oh, and a noobish question, cause this is my first DVD with iDVD... in the "Map", after the video shall i put the menu again? I mean, when that video finishes, the DVD return to the menu or not? Thanks.

The way to find out is look under project info again. If it gives you an option to switch to double layer disc, like it does with me. Then that signals that your computer can handle them. Thats what I remember reading anyway.

  • Problem with iDVD '08

When I try to create a new project, the program says "Your Macintosh does not have a supported SuperDrive. Please note that while you will be able to work with iDVD projects, you will not be able to burn a DVD disc." As far as I was aware, I have a DVD burner, so why does this happen? Any help would be appreciated.

Is it the MacBook w/ a "combo drive" as opposed to a SuperDrive? The former will only read DVD's and won't burn to a DVD w/o an ext. burner. Lacie makes ext. FW burners that work well with most macs or you can build your own from a standard FW 400 enclosure and a Pioneer 110, 111, or 112 drive like this:

  • Problem with  iDVD 06

I just started learning iDVD 06. My first try tonight was a slide show with music.
It contains 17 pictures imported form iPhoto and one song imported from iTunes.
So I burn the DVD and go to play it on my DVD player/television. The transition I chose was dissolve from black. At the beginning of every transition, the music dropped out and broke up a bit. The music on iTunes sounded great but on the burned DVD it was fuzzy - not good at all. The volume in iDVD was set to about 50% and it played fine on my computer. I wondering if this could be a media problem. I used Maxell DVD-R. The burner is an internal Pioneer 127 DVD-RW
    Thanks for the help.

If you want a slideshow with continuous background music, iDVD isn't the best place to create it.
Slides in an iDVD created slideshow are treated as chapters and many/most DVD players drop the audio on a chapter change.
Your best bet is to create your slideshow as a movie in iMovie.

  • Audio problems with iDVD

My problem is that the audio ( soundtrack and added music)quits half way through the burned dvd. It is fine when viewing it in iDVD.

Did you ever resolve this as I have the same problem, the music stops part way through the DVD. Everything plays OK in iDVD before burning. I am now trying a different make DVD and also created a playlist in iTunes first. Last time I joined all the music together in Garage Band. By the way, my DVD I am trying to create is a slideshow with music and lasts approx 35 mins.

  • Aspect Problems with iDVD

I have created and burned two dvd's that contain the same video (ture HD video) and slideshow using iDVD. I have made one dvd using a 4:3 vieww and one using 16:9 view. I have played them both back on 4 different dvd/tv setups and am having the same problem on all of them (even after changing the aspect ratio on the TV) That problem is that the entire DVD, menu's and all are chopped off of the screen tops and bottoms and right and left sides (i.e. no heads, missing the first and last words on the menu titles) Any ideas?

Wow, nobody qualified to help me with this problem?

  • Interlacing problems with iDVD Preview and burning - comb effect appalling.

When using iDVD to burn content onto DVDs, I suffer from "comb effect" interlacing related problems both in the iDVD Preview and with the final product played on a computer. I have yet to play the disc in a "real" DVD player.
I am editing HDV (60i) footage with FCE 4, exporting (both interlaced and de-interlaced - same problem) to 1920x1080 HD at a Quicktime movie, and then importing the clips to iDVD.
The clips are short (under 10 minutes) and play back perfectly on Quicktime.
Once imported to iDVD, the iDVD Preview displays (especially with motion scenes) four areas of horizontal jagged edge areas, which are spectacularly distracting.
    Here is an example:
    http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u4/praxisuniversal/InterlacingProblem.jpg
I have tried various settings using iDVD, but have not been met with success. In other, similar discussions, people have had luck with other software programs, but I am reluctant to spend great gobs of money if the Apple Discussion Brain Trust can find a way to circumvent.
    Thanks!

  • Problem with iDVD Chapter selection

    Hi everyone,
I've a problem when burning a DVD. In the preview mode of iDVD, I can select the chapter I want using the scene selection menu, but once the DVD is burnt, every scene selection on my DVD player relaunches the DVD main menu (splash screen, then main menu...)
Does anyone already experienced this problem ? Is it possible to solve it ?
(I am using the latest iDVD version)
    Thanks for help

I know I have seen that problem in these groups before but forget what the solution is. But something you can try is to delete the encoded assets in the project then re-encode/burn the project. Not sure if the menus are the same, but in iDVD4, you go to the Advance menu then select delete encoded assets. This forces iDVD to re-encode everything like it is supposed to. Sometimes if there are assets left over iDVD might see those, thing that part is done and move on. This can result in weird problems like you describe, wrong audio in the DVD, and other issues.

  • Startup problem with idvd

after it starts up i cannot open or creat new project. there is no error messages or anything. i can't even quit normally, need to force quit it. what's the problem?

    what's the problem?
No idea but start by repairing your HD as well as permissions.
drag and drop the plist for iDVD to the trash. Looks like this:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
Use the finder (happy face on the dock) copy and paste the above plist to it and drag to the trash directly from the finder (empty the trash) Restart.
Post back when you have gotten this far.

  • I am having weird problems with iDVD writing a disc.

A funny thing happened to me in iDVD. I created a 1hr .mov file of a dance performance, added it to an iDVD project and tried to burn it to DVD. I had iDVD set to 'Best', but the text flashed red and I had to change the setting to 'High'. The disc was ok, but very poor quality when compared with the original HD .mov file created in iMovie.
I decided to split the recording into two 30min segments. I went through the burn process again and when I checked the disc, the quality seemed slightly better.
I popped in a second blank disc and made a second copy before iDVD lost the processed project.
This is when the weird thing happened. Some how the disc was burnt with the full version of the .mov file, and not the 'part one' segment I had made. Then, when I created a new iDVD project and attempted to burn 'part two', again I got the whole 1hr .mov file. However, the original 1hr .mov file no longer existed. It only existed as two 30min .mov files. I checked the recordings were as I wanted them in iDVD before burning the DVDs.
So, my question is, does iDVD hold some kind of memory of past files added. As it stands, though I have two 30min .mov files on my iMac, iDVD sees them as a previous incarnation as a single 1 hour .mov file and refuses to recognise the two 30 min .mov versions.

Yes, iDVD can get confused when there are multiple versions of the file.  Try the command -- Delete Encoded Assets -- to refresh iDVD.  Or, you can create new iDVD projects for each of the 30 min segments.

  • Qualtiy problem with iDVD of TIFF format photos

I made an iDVD of photos that are in the TIFF format.  The saved image size is 8" by 10".  They look ok on my computer screen, but on my 42" flat screen they are unacceptable. The reason to put them on a DVD is to give it to someone who doesn't have access to a computer, so it doesn't help that they look fine on the computer!
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I might improve the quality of the image?  I have already tried saving the photos in Photoshop, increasing the res from 290 to 600, and then making the iDVD.  I also tried saving the 600 res Photoshop image as a TIFF and making an iDVD.  There was some improvement, but not enough.
The iDVD setting is "professional quality", single layer 4.2 GB.
