Problems with IMAP account in mail

Recently I reconfigured my email accounts from POP to IMAP. My provider supports both.
With POP, never experienced problems in Mail (Lion)
With IMAP, I always get the exclamation mark behind the mailbox name.
Sending messages is no problem. Receiving works from time to time, but i'll always see that error. When I click on the mark, it says that the server returned a fault: reading information from server 'imap.myserver.be' failed.
I checked the settings several times and all is correct. I contacted my provider and everything works fine on their side.
It's very annoying because I'm not sure everything works flawlessly.
Anyone any idea how to solve this issue?

Hi,
I am working on this in a topic with another person with some IMAP issues. I have 4 IMAP accounts, and in two of them Use IDLE is checked and in the other 2 it is not. But neither of the ones checked is gray -- in screenshots for support I have not seen it grayed out either.
I think it might be worthwhile to setup the account to NOT have that selected if that can be done -- it may happen by default, but perhaps if caught during setup, not. One very safe way to do this would be to create a New User Account on your Mac, and as that New User, set up Mail to use this same IMAP account, taking care to see if that can be left Unchecked. However, it may happen automatically by some process.
You can also, in your normal User Account, safely remove any IMAP account, if all mailboxes of importance are stored on the server, and add it again. However, let me know first if you have any other accounts in Mail other than this IMAP?

  • Problem with .mac account and mail 2.05 (os x 10.4.4)

    hi!
i am not able to add a .mac account in mail 2.05. system is os x 10.4.4.
.mac settings in system preference work fine, on my cube with os 10.3.9 i can add the .mac account without problems.
in mail under 10.4.4 i can´t even select accounts besides IMAP, POP and EXCHANGE. if i delete mails plist and even the mail file and achieving a "virginal mail" i just can select these 3 accounts (POP,IMAP,EXCHANGE). strange because if i setup .mac settings in system preferences before setting up a POP mail account (i have 3 POP accounts besides .mac), the .mac account is automatically set up in mail. but even than i can´t set up manually (another) .mac account (can´t be selected in account pulldown menue) as well as soon as i delete it it can´t be resetup.
no way with new user, same procedure. i reinstalled mail from tiger-dvd as well as reinstalling 10.4.4 combo update and repair disc permissions. no way to get .mac to work the normal way.
    has anyone any idea?
    thanks so long,
    peter

the empty folder ~/Library/Mail/ at root level seemed to be the problem of not being able to activating the .Mac account in mail. after copying this folder onto harddisk again (i have a new "20 iMac at work with 10.4.4) the problem was solved. no idea how to get this folder again besides installing a blank 10.4.x install onto external firewire hdd or having a second system...
    thanks so long.
i guess i made a mistake when migrating my old mail prefs from 10.3.x to 10.4.x blank install when moving the folders to 10.4.x maybe i have first choosen the ~/Library/Mail/ folder at root level and when recognizing that mail is not working with new user, i´m sure i might have deleted the whole mail prefs and mail folder on root level and copied the whole stuff again into USER/Library/Mail/. Therefore the folder ~/Library/Mail/ at root level became empty. i purchased .Mac just a few days ago so i recognized this failure just now...

  • Problem with IMAP account, no messages in INBOX

I'm using the email from o2 Germany with my Pre almost 2 years without any significant problem.
Now I'm experiencing very strange behavior with the same account and the same IMAP settings on my TouchPad.
I get no emails shown in the INBOX on TouchPad. Other Folders, Sent, Trash, or any other custom Folders, work correct.
The update to 3.0.2 didn't help.
I've deleted the account and created it again, I've done Full Erase, and nothing has helped.
I believe it's not a connectivity problem. At home I’m on o2 DSL, but I’ve tried it also on other Wi-Fi Networks.
My wife's account on o2 behaves in the same way, IMAP account of my friend by other provider worked without any problem. But I don’t think the problem is on o2 side, because it works on my Pre.
Post relates to: Pre p100ueu (O2)

Are you using Outlook 2003-2010 or Outlook Express to get your email at home or work? If so then you would want to check the settings to make sure the email items are not being deleted from the server.
Are the messages are more than 3 days old? If so you may need to correct the settings on the Touchpad under email for the amount of email time synced.
Can you check any trash folder for the missing messages?
Can you confirm that the missing messages are still in the Inbox on the mail server? You can do this by using a webmail tool for O2 through you browser.
Lastly you mentioned that you tried a friend's account and it worked fine. This could indicate an O2 issue through Wi-Fi versus HSDPA (O2 network)? You may want to check with O2 on this issue.

  • Problem with an account of Mail

I had, with Leopard, a Mail account that did not want to work and, after the installation of Lion, I tried to repair it.
The first thing that I did was to remove completely from Mail that account. Than I started by loading, from Mail Preferences, my Name, the Mail Address, the Pop, the SMTP and all other data, but the account did not wanted to work nor receiving nor transmitting. During the registration of the necessary data Mail notified me that, if I wanted to continue, I had to proceed Manually. At the end of registration it appeared on the right side of the "Sent" icon a triangle with an exclamation point inside. I repeated more times the account registration operation, all with negative results. I have also removed from User/Library/Preferences the file "apple.com.mail.plist" and some files in the "Mail" folder of User/Library and repeated again the registration process: always without success. At that time, to check the validity of the account parameters that I utilized, I registered the same account in Windows XP of the same iMac, and it worked immediately, both receiving and sending mails. That means that the utilized parameters are correct.
It seems that, in some place in OSX 10.7.1 of my iMac some wrong data, loaded when the operating system was Leopard, remain in some file that I'm not able to find and to remove.
Any ideas on how to fix the problem?
Notice that on the same computer (in Mac side) I have other two Mail Accounts that work perfectly.
    Regards
    Roberto

    Hello
Just for test ,make a new account ( system pref ->account -> + button ) , and try configure mail again

  • Problems with POP account on Mail

My POP account set up on Mail has suddenly stopped receiving / sending emails. All account settings have been double checked and I have a good internet connection. I'm running 10.6 on an iMac - hope someone can help. Thanks

Try Mail's menu option Window > Connection Doctor to see if that shows you anything that explains the problem.
By the way, if you click on "Your Stuff" (toward the upper-right part of this window), then click on "Profile", in the section of "My Products" you can enter your hardware and software details so that you don't keep having to type them each time.

  • How can I rearrange IMAP folders with multiple accounts in Mail?

    Hi all,
I switched to the Mac in 2004, but I've never really used Mail (been using Entourage). I set up an IMAP account in Mail, and was very impressed. So I decided to set up my other IMAP account, too. Now things are a bit messed up. I have these folders
    Inbox
    Drafts
    Sent
    Junk
    Trash
    Email1
    Email2
Under Email1 and Email2 are all the IMAP folders for the respective email address, except Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Junk and Trash are separate, and each of those folders has a folder in it called Email1 and one called Email2. How can I change this so that I just ahve the Email1 and Email2 folders, and everything appears under those?
On a less important note, is there any way to make Mail ignore IMAP folders? My email server creates a folder called '.mailboxes' for each IMAP account, and just stores some of its information in there, nothing I want in Mail. So is there a way I can hide this .mailboxes folder?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi mr max pie whatever.
This is actually one of Mail’s best features and cannot be changed.
Instead of grouping mailboxes by account, Mail groups them by purpose first (and uses the account name to differentiate the individual mailboxes associated with each account), then groups by account the remaining mailboxes that don’t belong to any of the standard groups.
This has the advantage of letting you choose at any time, and independently for each mailbox type, whether you want to look at your Inbox, Sent, Trash, etc. mailboxes as if you had just one of them shared by all accounts (i.e. an aggregate), or look at each of the corresponding individual mailboxes separately.
As to the “.mailboxes” folder that you’d rather not see there, I believe Mail shouldn’t show it if the name begins with a period. Moreover, I’ve troubleshooted a few cases where the problem was the opposite, i.e. the user had renamed a mailbox with a leading period and it became inaccessible as a result. I don’t know why Mail behaves so inconsistently in this regard. If all the server-stored mailboxes were subfolders of a parent folder, you could solve the problem by typing the name of the parent folder in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > IMAP Path Prefix...

  • No incoming mail on ipad with IMAP account

I have not been able to receive incoming mail from an IMAP account hosted by Network Solutions, and I'm not sure if the problem is on the client or server side. I am also not able to delete messages from the inbox. (I get a message saying "Unable to move message: The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash."
I am sending and receiving emails from this account on both my iPhone and macbook without any problem. The iPad account is set-up exactly the same on the iPad as it is on the phone and macbook. The inbound port is set to 993, which is what it is automatically set to in the others even though NS says to set to 143.
I have tried deleting the account and reinstalling many times with no success. I also tried resetting the ipad to factory settings. This worked briefly and everything worked fine for a couple of test emails, and then I was back at square one.
There are a couple of things I've noticed. All my mail is in the inbox up until 9/5/13, after that there is nothing. If I search for a specific email and opt to continue the search on the server, the email is found and put in my mailbox (it is not there after deleting and reinstalling the account.) Also, I notice at the bottom of the folder bar where it tells you progress, last updated, etc. that when I am checking for mail, the status shows the downloading progress bar and the approximate number of emails I'm missing very briefly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • TS3899 Problems with sending to aol mail account

Hi I have just upgraded to an iPad air. I have an aol email account. The account receives email fine but can't send it. I get an error message that it can't deliver to server. I've tried deleting and reading without success. I think its a problem with the revert port number - the default is 465. I think it should be 587 but it won't let me change it. Any suggestion?

  • Problem with IMAP Public Folders in Mail

I use Mail v. 3.6 on a Mac (OSX.5.8) and recently started a new job and given a university email account. I was able to set up an IMAP account in Mail to access these emails. The problem is that the University Exchange server has dozens of "Public Folders". I do not even have access to these email, but Mail is constantly checking for new emails and downloading hundreds of them.
I can't figure out any way of unsubscribing from these Public Folders. I have asked the Tech. people in my department but they say that this is a known glitch with OSX and Mail.
    Can anyone help?

While you have posted in the section for Snow Leopard and Mail 4.x, you report you are using Mail 3.6 and 10.5.8. I am not currently booted into Leopard to check for this, but in Mail Help for Mail 4.x, searching on Subscribe indicates the option is present. In your Mail, click on Help and search with "subscribe" to see what is said. I think this was a problem in Mail 3.x, but cannot verify at present.

  • Mail.app and purging of moved messages with IMAP accounts?

I REALLY want to like Mail.app but one item that has caused frustration for years is the handling (or lack) of handling of my messages once moved to another folder with IMAP accounts. I would like for Mail.app to purge/expunge the messages from the server automatically when the message is moved but it doesn't seem to complete that transaction until you actually quit out of mail.
I use multiple computers and I don't remember to quit out of Mail.app going from one of my Macs to another and don't want to but I'm getting tired of having to file the messages twice (or more). Is there a way to set Mail.app to do the automatic instant purging (or expunging) of the messages from the originating folders without having to quit out of the application? This seems to be the default behavior for nearly every other mail client I've used, including Entourage and is an option in Outlook and Outlook Express (PC).

same is true with popmail, not just imap.
moreover, i think hitting "remove now" just puts content in your server's trash folder, meaning it's still taking up disk quota and you'll never know till you stop getting mail...

  • I have 2 POP accounts and 2 IMAP accounts in Mail.....

I have 2 POP accounts and 2 IMAP accounts in Mail 6.2 (1499), how do I ensure they all leave messages on the server?
I was trying to check with my ISP why they were not sending me notice of my monthly bill. They said they were, and gave me the dates of when the missing ones were sent. They went to check my inbox so that they could re-send the offending messages and said there were no messages there! Hence my question, How do I make sure that messages are left on the server? I have looked in Mail/Preferences, and certainly in the POP accounts the Remove copy from Server is unchecked, on the IMAP accounts, there doesn't appear to be a means of leaving on the server, which, in essence, shouldn't worry me because they are different ISP addresses, (1 = icloud and the other is BT.) and only the one address of the POP account is the one the ISP is sending messages to me.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks

I have, indeed, checked with my ISP and they do accept imap accounts. So I followed religiously their instructions, published in their setting e mail information for Mountain Lion website. The instructions were quite simple, and choosing imap was as easy as setting POP mail. however, the net result was that I could never connect with the servers to do anything with the mail. I know they are set up correctly, but when it tried to send mail, after a while an error message came up saying that it couldn't connect and gave me the option of dealing with a "connection doctor" or some such system. This I clicked on and noted that there were an awful lot of servers that it was trying to connect to some of which had been removed when I removed the setup addresses. The ones I wanted were, in fact, showing as connected!! It was obviously checking on anything that had been used in setting a server name from way back when and suffering with a severe bout of indigestion!
I think what really needs to happen is to get iMAC/Mountain Lion to regurgitate all that rubbish which is no longer a requirement, since I am only using three addresses, one from icloud and two from my ISP. I do not need the clogging up from redundant server names, but it seems that the MAC hangs on to everything just in case I may want to go back to them rather than set them from afresh!! I am not feeling too confident in trying to set the address that originally showed the problem, my BT one, and since this morning, it is almost working 100%, I'll leave well alone and see if it settles down. (One step forward and nineteen backwards!!)

  • More than 1 IMAP account in "Mail"? - ...e.g. 2 "gmail" accounts in "Mail"

    Hi folks,
I have currently a "mobile.me" subscription which I don't really use (e.g. I don't need the internet functions like the homepage designer nor the 200gb, etc.). Nevertheless, I would still like to use "Mail" as my primary email application.
Therefore I created two new "gmail" email addresses (one for my wife and one for myself). Although it was quite an easy task to set-up the first gmail address in "Mail" (IMAP) it was not possible to install a second IMAP account.
Please help me! How can i set-up a second IMAP account in "Mail"?
or the other way around. how can I use "Mail" with two different email addresses? ...without a "mobile.me" subscription?
    Thanks in advance
    Dave

    mea culpa!
I forgot to change the description for the second (new) IMAP account.

  • Removing GMAIL POP Account and Replacing with IMAP Account

Because I want to sync my Gmail account on two Macs and discovered that IMAP is better at this than POP, I want to delete my Gmail POP account and add an IMAP account. Mail > Preferences indicates that all received mail will be deleted as well. Since I want to keep received emails, should I move them to a folder in On My Mac? I don't see where emails are stored on the hard drive, so until I know that I'll be able to retrieve them, I don't want to delete the POP account.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Nick,
You may find that all these messages also exist on the Gmail server, and if so they will sync with the IMAP access. The account folder and the Inbox, etc, can be found at Home/Library/Mail in a folder beginning with POP.
You can leave the POP account, and only disable it in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced until you check or transfer the info.
