Problems with iMovie, iDVD.....
Ok I made a movie on iMovie last week and I opened it to change 1 thing and then burn it to a DVD with iDVD. Well I can't watch the movie on iMovie at all, it won't even play a second of a clip. The audio is gone and I can't add the track back it saying it's importing but it doesn't do anything. I tried to just burn the previous movie to a Dvd using iDVD and it wouldn't do it either. Said something about "couldn't render it". And when I open iDVD it says it can't find the files from iMovie when I first open iDVD. Is it the same as everyone else's problem with the recent update or is it something that I am just doing wrong. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it! Have a great day.
Liz
That's the problem. You should have about 10% of your disk space free to use imovie. Video = 13 GB / hour.
You might want to clear out unneeded files. Cache Out X or Onyx are two free programs that will help you do that.

Audio Sync problem with iMovie/iDvd
Hi guys
I am using imovie HD6. I have been working on a project for a few months now...it runs around 20 minutes.
I exported it to idvd, burnt and watched it recently - when it was around 15 minutes long and all audio was fine.
I have since added about 5 minutes. The audio plays fine when watched on my mac in imovie - however last night I burnt it to DVD using idvd and the audio is about half a second out of sync in one of the two interviews I have in the early stages on the projects. Both interviews were made using the same video camera. An interview in the new part of the project has the same problem.
I always use the same camera and have about 3 finished projects with interviews where the audio is fine.
Can anyone suggest a way to correct this problem?
Many thanks
RossLike many others, the sync issue is when taking a long clip or clips to iDVD to make a disc. The movie runs fine in the iMovie preview, but slowly goes out of sync in the final iDVD version. I used a Panasonic miniDV camcorder, 16-bit sound, SP record mode. I also tried extracting the audio in iMovie, then taking it to iDVD - no help. Then I tried breaking the movie into shorter clips (still with the audio extracted), saving it as a quicktime movie, then taking it into iDVD - no help. Although the breaking into shorter clips was done after the video was already imported. So, after all of this not working, I've now scrapped all of the imported video and started over. This time I set the import preference to automatically break the video into 9-minute clips as it's being imported. I read in the forumn that that's the "true" way to break into shorter segments - not after import. I'm just now in the process of seeing if that will help matters. Any suggestions? I'm really at a loss for ideas since I did the original recording in 16-bit sound. Everything I've read seems to indicate that 12-bit sound is the main culprit with out-of-sync issues.

Anyone having a problem with iDVD in Mavericks 10.9.3? When previewing a slideshow all color is lost after the first image.
Is your problem with iMovie as the title suggests or with iDVD?

Flip Video camera & problems with iMovie 08
If you are having problems with iMovie and Flip Video, here is the Flip Video email response on 27 May 2008:
Hello,
Thank you for your response.
We are not authorized to support third party applications, which is why we do not provide specific instructions regarding iMovie or any other third party application. We only support the Flip and the Flip program, while offering suggestions regarding other programs.
The Apple website also offers Perian as a workaround regarding audio on the Tiger operating system with the latest QuickTime. The latest QuickTime upgrade didn’t allow for audio playback of AVI files, which is why Perian is now offered as a work around by us and by Apple.
It seems as though you are able to playback your videos, as well as use them in outside applications. If this is not the case, and you are having issues using your Flip video or your Flip video program, feel free to contact us further.
Thank you,
Consumer Support

This is my email to Flip Video on 26 May 2008:
My MAC Updater downloaded the new QT 7.4.5 on 5 Apr 2008. I have been making movies in iMovie, and then posting them to YouTube. In the beginning I uploaded the movies as MOV files but soon discovered AVI files (larger file and longer time to upload) had more clarity when viewed on YouTube. Once the new QT 7.4.5 downloaded all my AVI files had picture, but no sound! I downloaded the Perian component as posted in QT discussions. The sound returned to the AVI files. However, when I Exported an AVI movie from iMovie the picture quality was worse than the MOV movie. There is something wrong with the new QT 7.4.5 when working with AVI, my AVI movies look terrible. These AVI files were all downloaded from my Ultra Flip Video camera with Flip’s codec 3vix. Flip is aware of this problem and acknowledged it last Friday. Flip says Apple is aware of the problem.
My MAC PowerPc G4 has performed well in the past two months when working with the Flip Video camera. So, at Flip Video’s suggestion I upgraded the operating system to OS 10.5 from OS 10.4.11. Flip Video says their camera works with OS 10.5. Once OS 10.5 was uploaded I soon discovered that iMovie 08 would not operate on my PowerPc G4, 1.86 MHz. The speed requirement for iMovie 08 is 1.9 GHz.
At this point of “spinning my wheels for nearly a month” with this Flip Video camera, I decided to purchase a new iMac. On May 2, 2008, I walked out of the Apple Store in Walnut Creek with the new iMac 20-inch: 2.66GHz. Now the Flip video camera should work and all my video problems solved. However, this was not to be.
When I attempted to Import Flip Video AVI and MOV files into iMovie 08 the files were “grayed out” and would not Import. None of my previous Flip Video files would Import. I tried making new Flip Video movies, they also would not Import into iMovie 08.
At another Apple Store, the tech suggested I download the previous version of iMovie HD. I did this and with hours of working through the different Export options I was able to create movies to post again on youTube. However, the picture quality of the newer iMovies has never approached the quality of my last post before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. Remember my problems started with QT 7.4.5. Well, my new iMac came with QT 7.4.1, I have not Uploaded QT 7.4.5 and won’t until Flip Video fixes this problem.
Examples of my Flip Video movies can be viewed on youTube at: sffoggydays. The last video with excellent picture quality was posted 6 Apr 2008 titled “A Day at the San Francisco Zoo, Chapter Nine, L-Taravel Ride to BART.” This video was made in iMovie and Exported before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. All the youTube Flip Videos made after 6 Apr 2008 have poor picture quality.
It is time for Flip Video camera to stop “passing the buck” to Apple. When manufactures of operating system such as Apple and Microsoft create newer and upgraded systems, it is the responsibility of the manufactures of applications to redo their programs for operating on the new systems. Here is where Flip Video is not accepting this responsibility to Mac users of their camera. The Flip Video application/codex/drivers need to be updated in order to fix the following problems:
- No sound on AVI files in QT 7.4.5
- No Import of AVI and MOV files in iMovie 08
- Poor picture quality for youTube in Export of iMovie HD
I like my Flip Video camera, want to continue making movies for youTube, and recommending the camera to others. The Flip Video camera people need to fix these problems for Mac users.Hi!
I agree 100%!
I also purchased the Flip Video - was thrilled to see that they worked with Apple computers. I made several movies with it when I had my PowerBook G4. I went on a great vacation & took several once in a lifetime videos. Got home & couldn't wait to put them in my iMoive -06, burn them on my iDVD and sent them to several family members & friends. Before I got the chance, I had my system updater tell me that there was a new version to QT. GREAT, I thought, just in time for my vacation videos. Like you, after the QuickTime upgrade, I got video, but no sound. I was SICK about it! I also wrote to the Flip people & got a response somewhat like yours. I left the videos on my Flip which left no room for any others, but I didn't want to take the chance of losing them. After reading from Flip that it would work with OS 10.5 system, I talked myself into getting a new MacBook Pro. Came with all the upgrades iLife -08 and the OS 10.5.2 OK...finally, after months of stressing over losing the vacation videos, I had all I needed to save them! Of course the $2,000.00 price tag hurt a bit, but I deserve a new computer.
Well...I STILL can't get my priceless vacation videos edited and burned! I tried downloading 2 different programs that were supposed to help convert my Flip movies to something that would work, but they haven't. I could get it to work on my desktop with QT, but what good is that?? I want to make DVD's to send to others & save for my grandkids (if I ever am lucky enough to get some!)
I'm TOTALLY disgusted & feel I've wasted my money on the Flip Camera (that at one time I loved & was seriously considering giving them as gifts) the $2,000.00 on a new computer (that even though I do deserve, didn't REALLY need one yet!) AND I still have vacation videos that I can't share!
So... I agree! Flip should honor their word that is printed on the box & MAKE it work with all Apple computers. Surely they can find a fix!
TOTALLY disgusted with the whole FLIP/APPLE mess!
Oh, Flip also said they 'heard' that QuickTime Pro would work with iMovie -08 - although they haven't actually tested it themselves. NO THANKS!!! I've got WAY too much money invested in this stupid Flip camera! -
I have a problem with Imovie. Just brought an macbook 15 retina , iLife install and Imovie was working. I than did a data migration from my old macbook pro and now it crashes on start up. I tried to re-install from app store but no option to re-install, just installed and it greyed out.
Well, my two-month-old MBP has no qualms about booting from a no-name external USB HD I put together...
Given that is is a common point of failure, I would imagine a large Apple Store should keep a stock of HD's on hand.
Now since you're a bit desperate and the genie pops up til Saturday and you seem to be the enterprising kind, let's try an experiment: if you have room enough in the external HD and assuming it isn't a Time Machine volume, why don't you plug it in, stick the Install CD and see if the installer lets you select the external drive as the install target. If you can install Leopard on it, on top of the backup without reformatting, and the Mac can boot from the drive afterwards, at least you would have some functionality restored and would be able to pull your stuff from the internal HD. Apple says booting from USB drives is not supported but that does not equate to not possible; some brands do work. Risks? Always. You can always lose your backup. Like I said, a challenge for an enterprising gal....
Next time around, consider having a bootable external clone at hand for rainy days. I keep three myself...
P.S. Since I'll be in the Dallas-FW area in late June, I can volunteer with the confetti.... -

I have a problem with iMovie since the last update to 9.0.7 when you press the camera button to import iMovie vypíče stops and an error message. Or he'll file> import from camera so iMovie also quits.

Just bought my first mac. Got couple problems with imovie. First - i have camcoder with dvd. imovie can't import. If i have not made disk finalization - imovie shows blank disk (unreadable). When i make finalization imovie shows attached dvd, but refuses to import vob files.
Second problem - i converted this dvd with ffmpegX to avi. Again imovie refuses to perform file import. File-import movies shows my avi files unclickable. The only video you can use on iOS version of iMovie, is video you take on the iPad using the iPad camera or any taken on any other device with the iOS software 4.3 or higher. Problem with iMovie iPod Touch 4G
Hey
I just bought my new iPod touch 4G 32 GB and I'm happy. There's just one problem with iMovie:
If i change the background music (use a song from my library or another theme song) and export the video, there is just music on the left speaker (on iPod and on pc). So the right one doesn't do anything. But if I play my video in the iMovie app (without exporting it) there is no problem with the sound - left and right speaker are working.
I don't know what to do now. I resetted my iPod, Reinstalled iOS 4.1 and iMovie itself an the problem is still there...
Please help
LowistaI'm having the same problem with the audio stuck in the left speaker after exporting from iMovie. Also, how come the video stabilization is so poor? It's impossible to walk and shoot video at the same time with the iPod Touch. I get better results with video stabilization on my old 1995 JVC camcorder! Come on, Apple. I expected better than this.

I having a problem with imovie 09 I cant figure out how to get the clips to speed up/slow down and reverse. It told me to
Double-click a video clip in your project.
Drag the Speed slider to the left to make the clip play slower, or to the right to make it play faster.
Fields to the right of the Speed slider show the percentage of normal speed and the clip duration. The farther you drag the slider, the more extreme the speed change.
To set the exact percentage of speed or clip duration, type it in the fields to the right of the Speed slider.
To make the clip play backward, select Reverse.
In the Project Browser, when you move the pointer over a video clip that has had its speed or direction changed, an icon near the left edge of the clip indicates the following:
Rabbit facing to the right: The clip is sped up.
Turtle facing to the right: The clip is slowed down.
Rabbit facing to the left: The clip is reversed, or both sped up and reversed.
Turtle facing to the left: The clip is reversed and slowed down.
i cant find this option and I could do it on one video but it wont show upWhat kind of camera do you have?

Problem with Imovie and IDVD 16:9 aspect ratio
I've recently converted to a mac. The main reason for this was to take advantage of the superior video / dvd editing capabilities. However, I have hit upon a problem with the aspect ratio of the final video.
I have connected my video camera (a sony DCR-HC42E PAL which is in theory 16:9 aspect ratio) and imported the DV tape into iMovie. It recognised that this is a DV widescreen (i.e. 16:9)movie and imports the video and then "letterboxes" the video for some time. In the clips window it then shows each clip as it should in a widescreen mode.
I have created a final video then exported this to iDVD for burning to a disc. When it arrives in iDVD it is however elongated - i.e. 4:3 aspect ratio.
Is there any way of avoiding this / working around this problem?
I understand that my camera may not be videoing 16:9 but rather 4:3 then converting it itself - but in previous windows environment this was fine and the pre-loaded free windows movie maker software managed to cope with this - can a mac?
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)Brilliant!
Thank you very much. I've spent the last 4 hours trying to solve this and also spent a good half hour on to apple care, not even their "teir 2" imovie experts in san fransisco could solve this problem - you are a star!!!!!
I was just about to throw the mac through the window and revert to windows - you have restored the faith!
I've done as you said (although the "auto pillerboxing tick is in "import" tab (not general) on my version 6.0.3 of imovie!) The movie has appeared in 16:9 format as suggested.
I would also comment that for general information, I pressed on with the higer frame setting and edited the full movie with the wrong setting on the macbook all the way through which looked weird - then burned a dvd via idvd and used the 16:9 setting as you suggested and the final video looked fine - therefore, the only place where the movie is incorrect was on the mac screen.
Overall I would agree that this is definatly a imovie "glitch". Thanks again.

Using Toast 10 with iMovie (& iDVD)
I am creating home movies (an hour or more in length w/ photos and music as well) in iMovie. I burned copies in iDVD and the quality seemed quite bad. I purchased Toast 10 hoping the quality would be better. I want to play my DVDs on our TV. How can I use iMovie and Toast together so that I can get great quality DVDs? Are my movies too long?
Hi
There are three things to this.
• 1. DVD - Has only SD-quality - There are NO HD DVDs due to it's standard
• 2. If original material is miniDV or interlaced video - then iMovie'08 & 09
are not the tools to use - they discard every second line = VHS-quality
• 3. If in iMovie previous versions (up to HD6) Share/Export to iDVD was destructive
when movie contained photos
a. Resulting DVD was heavily pixelated
b. Original movie in iMovie was harmed and - photos had to be re-imported and re-edited
To get better quality - only step is to go to Blu-Ray BUT
• Need of Blu-Ray-player, neither Mac or DVD-player can playback
• Need of BD-component to Toast™ to be able to burn
• Short movies (20 min - or at least <60 min) can be put on DVD disks - else
Need of BD-burner and BD-disks.
My collected list on
DVD-Quality
1. iDVD 08 & 09 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
• Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
2.Video from
• FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
• iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
• iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
iDVD quality also depends on.
• HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
• What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
• What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
• What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
• How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise before Pro Quality)
1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
1 = US
2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario

Problem with IMovie on Mountain Lion
IMovie crashed
Hi
Hard to say Why - but see if this helps
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
• iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
• Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
• Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
• a codec is used that doesn't work
• problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
• version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
• preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
• other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
• External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
• USB-flash-memories do not work
• Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
• iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
This You do by
_ close iPhoto
_ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
• free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
• external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
• GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
• Screen must be set to million-colors
• Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
• Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
• Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
• Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
• In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)

I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it

I loaded iLife 6 a few months ago and have done 2 iMovie projects with it and with both these projects the video freezes while the audio still plays.
I never had this problem with my previous iMovie version. I've put it to sleep for 10 seconds & done the repair permissions thing but neither of them fixed the problem.
I check past projects I did with the earlier version of iMovie & they play fine. It seems to only be the 2 new projects.
Now when I sent them to iDVD, they burned just fine, thank god, but it is very tough to work when the video freezes then jumps and then finally just freezes and dont move at all.
Any thought as to what I can do to fix this.
Calvin in Alberta CanadaCalvis,
This freezing video while the audio still plays happens to me all the time on playback. It is usually caused by lack of memory or multiple audio clips in the project. You can toggle between full screen mode and partial screen mode and that will sometimes get you through it. Try clearing some memory so that you have at least 10 GB to work with. You also can export parts of your movie to highest quality Quick Time movie, and then import the QT movie back into the project, so that you eliminate separate audio clips. Or you can remove the audio clips while editing the video. In the iMovie preferences, set the playback to Standard, which will give you smoother playback, although not quite as high video quality. You also can divide your project into several iMovie projects to work on and edit those separate parts of your movie, and then drag those separate parts into your main movie once the editing has been done. That will reduce the number of audio clips in the portion of the movie that you are editing.
All complex software, like iMove, has its glitches and you just need to learn to live with them until the producer irons them out. Meanwhile, it is aggravating, I know. -
I created a video with a sony HDR-mv1. The audio goes out of sync after 3-4 minutes if I open the file with quicktime or imovie 10.0.3, but it is perfect when opened with VLC. What can I do to work on it with Imovie?
The iDVD version in iLife '11 is the same as in last two previous versions of iLife. So IT hasn't changed.
I've never gone the 'shared with iTunes' route. I'm not sure what kind of issues THAT approach could cause.
Did you actually CREATE a new iDVD project for the adjusted movie? Trying to modify an existing project can cause problems. (Which could certainly lead to the wrong movie appearing on the DVD.)
It has also caused me to waste many hours and supplies
Computer programs are fussy and want you to do things their way. Rather than waste more DVD discs, make your burn to a disk image file (an option under FILE in iDVD); double-click on the .img disk image file to mount it on your desktop; and play it with the Apple DVD Player application. If it's correct, you can burn it to writable media using the Apple Disk Utility application.
