Problems with InDesign CS5, Mac Pro & 5870

I am using InDesign CS5, OS X 10.7.3 (recent clean install) on a Mac Pro 3,1 (early 2008 Mac Pro) with Apple's ATI 5870 card.
When working with a series of InDesign files today I noticed an odd problem. On some pages, PDF documents that were placed in the layout were not displaying on screen (just a white, blank space). Also, some JPEG files were appearing garbled, as if corrupted, in some of the same layouts.
My first thought was that the graphic files in question had somehow become corrupted, but after opening them that didn't seem to be the case. The InDesign files were from different sources and other than this problem, the machine is running without issues.
I don't know why I thought to try this but I replaced the 5870 with the original ATI 2600 and the problem went away.
Nothing else seems to have a problem with the 5870 including some graphic heavy games.
Has anyone else experienced symptons like this?
Thanks for your time.
Regards,
Keith

Keith: What patch release of InDesign are you running? Hold down Cmd and select About InDesign.
Did you try resetting your preferences?
I don't believe that InDesign is GPU-accellerated, and you games probably are. So if there are issues with non-GPU graphics on your card, that could be it.
Certainly hardware failure of the video card is consistent with your narrative.

  • Were there graphics card problems with the 2006 Mac Pros?

I'm curious about the ATI 2600 graphics card issues occuring with the new Mac Pro's using Leopard...
Did this just start occuring or were people also having problems with the NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT cards on the 2006 Mac Pro's while running Tiger?
The reason I'm asking is my Dual 867 has finally given up the ghost and needs to be replaced and I have the opportunity to buy a new 2 Dual-Core 2.66GHZ Mac Pro with Tiger loaded in lieu of the newer, problem ridden models.
    Thanks for your responses.

the 7300 has had no widespread problems.

  • Problems with recently purchaed Mac Pro

I have bought a Mac Pro of late and certain Applications that i previously owned (Recycle, Wire tap) do not seem to work when i hit the icon on the toolbar. I did some research and found out that these should work due to "Rosetta" but they do not, i have check out the relevant websites and can't seem to find any relative upgrades. does anyone have any good advice for me on what i can do cheers

    Hi Matt,
I ran into the same problem with some Apps when I started out with my MacPro. I upgraded from PPC G4 which ran under Panther.
If I'm not mistaken, you need to verify if your old Apps are made to run in Tiger instead of Panther.
In my case, I had to Upgrade some Apps for Tiger versions and I did fresh installs and I'm fine now.
    Rio.

  • Anyone having a crashing problem with the new Mac Pro?

I have a new Mac Pro purchased in January.  I bought it as a front end to my very large mp3 library (170,000 mp3s and over 2,000 mp4s; media is housed on a 12 TB QNAP NAS).  Since day 1 it has been a major problem.  The biggest problem I have now is random crashing--can occur any time even when I am not even using the Mac Pro, making it totally unreliable and a $5,200 paperweight.
I have had several Apple Care people working on this, but after having been passed around to 5-6 different people, they still have no solution.
    Anybody having a similar problem?

As today I'm sure I'll not make the purchase again.
The more I look into this problem, the more people and articles I find about it: and it's more than a month and no update to fix the problem.
PC alternatives are far more interesting and they still give you the choice of building your machine.
Apple was amazing 15 years ago, where is the team of developpers that created the old Mac Pro?!
I want to be optimistic too, but I'm already collecting all the info on how to build an backup machine... since I'm using Adobe CC and other interchangeable softwares, there is no more problems swithcing from Mac to PC and vice-versa.
I hope there will be a third contender entering the market soon, with a dream computer on Linux. I am on mac because of its reputation 20 years ago, but times are changing and Apple vision seems very different now.
I'm afraid that WWDC will not announce a thing relevant for the MacPro or computers, we got used now to ear only about phones and tablets...

  • Problem with InDesign CS5 trial

I just downloaded and installed the International English version of InDesign CS5. When I start the program I get the Adobe Software License Agreement screen. I click Accept, the screen goes away, then it comes back again. I cannot get the program to start - just stuck at this Agreement (which I already agreed to when I downloaded the thing).
    Help!

Do you have an active internet connection? This sounds off the wall, but is your default printer a lcoal printer, and is it turned on?

  • PROBLEMS WITH INDESIGN CS5.5.7.2 UPDATE

Several weeks ago, I downloaded and installed InDesign CS 5.5.7.2 update. Since then, I have noticed that some tasks are no longer available to me... such as in my Swatches window, I can no longer manipulate certain tasks there.
Must I totally reinstall the InDesign CS5.5 app, or is there an easier solution?
    Thanks.

THANK YOU, PETER. I WAS UNAWARE OF 7.5.3. I REINSTALLED THE ORIGINAL 5.5 FROM THE DISK AND IT'S BEAUTIFUL AGAIN. MAKES ME VERY SCARED TO UPDATE AGAIN.
    THANKS!

  • Does the ATI 5770 graphics card have compatibility problems with early 2008 Mac Pro?

I have had advice from apple technical which contradicts the reviews on the web and on apple site? Apple say that the ATI 5770 is not compatibile while it seems that everyone else thinks it is?
Technical support have pointed me to the follow link
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3891?locale=en_GB&viewlocale=en_GB
    Has anybody experienced this issue?
    All help appreciated
(I know that I will have to upgrade OS)

you want the summary of pros and cons?
there is always the official - what we support, tested, marketing - that you can usually take with grain of salt (or two)
there is an official article on support for pre-2010
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3891
pre-2008 you will see Barefeats and users that PCIe 1.1 does limit the max bandwidth
    Google, Bing http://www.barefeats.com/wst10g5.html
    http://www.bing.com/search?setmkt=en-US&q=5770+performance
support for 3 displays is always a problem
Apple has taken the reference design with support for 2 x DVI and cut one out, and eliminated HDMI in favor of 2 x minidisplay ports.

I am not the best on GPU features but that is the ghist.

  • Problems with InDesign CS5 reading EXIF data

Hi there - my first post.  Been searching all over for a solution but no one else seems to have this problem.
I'm trying to create a picture book using InDesign and have JPEG's loaded in direct from many cameras (HTC, Canon etc.)
I'm creating captions using either Live Caption or manually to show the description and exposure details.
InDesign can always read the caption and tags (if it's been set by Picasa in the IPTC tag) but it never shows the EXIF camera details - it just shows <No data from link>.   In the links section if you right click on the image and open XMP File Info you can see all the EXIF info is there.
Even dragging images from Bridge does not help.
The only way I can make InDesign read them is to get Adobe Bridge to modify the image by completing a random IPTC field.  Bridge won't let you modify EXIF, so presumably that does not get changed, so why that helps I do not know.
Is there any way to get InDesign to read EXIF's first off?
    Thanks, Simon

It's been a long time since I looked at this.  While I was able to solve the problem using EXIFTOOL to process that JPEG files (and write XMP) I decided against including the metadata into the InDesign book as it would mean processing all my images, and having to remember to process any new photos I take.  Book is behind schedule so I cut it all out.
I changed the code that was submitted by John, and made the following .bat file that sits in the same folder as EXIFTOOL.  The .bat files contains:
    %0\..\exiftool.exe -overwrite_original -TagsFromFile %* -@ exif2xmp.args %*
    pause
In order for this to work, you need the exif2xmp.args file.  I didn't know where it was supposed to be located but put it in the same dir as EXIFTOOL and the bat file above and it worked.  I got the file somewhere from the EXIFTOOL website - think its in the full archive that they provide.
To use it, you can drag multiple files onto the .bat file in Windows and they are processed.  N.B. this overwrites the original photos, so make a backup if you are unsure.

  • Problem with InDesign CS5

Old question - didn't find an answer. CS5 on Windows 7. Can't change the fonts or line weight. Fonts do change if using type/font pull down, but not from character box. Just installed on home computer as I wanted the same version I use at work.

If that's not the problem, see Replace Your Preferences

  • Problem with Indesign CS5 Live Distribute

I have a strange issue with the new Live Distribute feature. When I first experimented with it, it seemed to work perfectly. However, now, when I click on one of the scaling squares and hold down the space bar, it only lets me distribute for about a second. After that, the cursor is frozen, and I have to let go of the spacebar and perform another distribution. This is really tedious, as it requires quite a few moves to make relatively minor distributions. I don't know if I inadvertently changed a setting which is causing this behavior. If someone could provide some guidance, I'd really appreciate it.

I don't use Live Distribute but you could try these standard trouble shooting tuips when a file is misbehaving, this one first then this one.  Alternatively go to the help here which has a few links on how to use it.

  • Print problem with InDesign CS5 and Power RIP-X

When I try to print an InDesign page using PowerRIP I get a big X across the page that is not in the document. Any ideas as to why and how I can fix this?

The demo version PowerRIP adds the X watermark.

  • Problem with ID CS5 to epub

    Dear Adobe
I have the following problem with Indesign CS5.
After placing correctly my pdf doc into ID CS5 and exporting it for epub, the exported epub file is generated with only small size. I mean when i opened the epub file with Adobe digital edition, i can not maximums the size of the doc. I think the problem is that ID CS5 is added a page number for only the first page in the right bottom of the first page only. This will makes the doc to be displayed with maximum only by adding an extra blank page to the right of each generated page which contains only a page number, so that I can not change the display size in Adobe digital edition. However, Adobe digital edition is working well for other e-books.
How can I remove the page number on the first page and make the epub file to be displayed with normal size.
    best regards

  • Problem with ID CS5 to epub - Please Help

    Dear Adobe
I have the following problem with Indesign CS5.
After placing correctly my pdf doc into ID CS5 and everything is OK, I exported it for epub, the exported epub file is generated with only small page size. I mean when i opened the epub file with Adobe digital edition, i can not maximums the size of the doc. I think the problem is the ID CS5 is added a blank page in the right of each page. The blank page contains only a page number for only the first page in the right bottom of the first page only. This will makes two pages to be displayed and tends to reduce the size of original page and the epub-doc to be displayed with maximum size only by adding an extra blank page to the right of each generated page which contains only a page number.
How can I remove the page number on the first added page and make the epub file to be displayed with normal size.
